Tres Mountains (King’s X’s dUg Pinnick & Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament)
A new “super group” of dUg Pinnick from King’s X, Richard Stuverud of the Fastbacks, and Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam has a name and an album coming out and a selective tour in March 2011.
Tres Mountains (aka Tres Mts.)

Go to http://tresmts.com/, sign up for their newsletter, and get a free download of “My Baby.” The debut album Three Mountains comes out in March 15th, 2011 (CD, LP, digital). Update 2/3: I just got my ticket for the Seattle show at the Shoebox (3/16). Apparently Mike McCready (also from Pearl Jam) is playing with them. Woot!
Update 3/8: get the record digitally here:
I’m hoping good things from this group. I tend to really dig bands and side-projects where dUg gets involved. The first track “My Baby” needs a bit warming up for me, but I dig the vibe.

REVIEW: Derek Webb @ WOW Hall (Eugene, OR – 1/20/11)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM
I’ve been a fan of Derek Webb ever since seeing him in Caedmon’s Call in the mid-90s. His voice and lyricism is something I connect with, regardless of my now-differing beliefs. He’s a genuine artist & thinker, and I think he’s a Christian that I think really “gets it”… or is at least trying to “get it” (we’re all a work in progress)…
His last two albums, 2009’s Stockholm Syndrome and 2010’s instrumental Feedback, have some of the best material he’s put out, in my opinion. Since I went into a long-ish discussion about my connection and thoughts about Webb & Christianity in my review of the Jennifer Knapp tour in the Spring 2010 and my thoughts about Feedback, I’ll keep this review shorter and sweeter…
We showed up a little after the early start time… I got a chuckle out of Derek’s tweet about it being a “Christian seated show” (with photo) and took in the last half of opener Anna Gilbert‘s set…

Anna is an Oregonian, went to the University of Oregon, lives in Portland, and has a handful of delightfully sonic pop albums. Her third CD, Your Love My Medicine, was produced by none other than knob-wizard Charlie Peacock (his wiki). Anna’s sound… poppy, singer-songwriter. Nice positive songs.
After a short break and a beer, Derek hit the stage at 8pm…

Great set, a mix of songs from his solo albums, a couple of Caedmon’s tunes… and one lonely cover song. Based on my prior experience with Derek, and his recent Democracy covers series (now heading into Volume 2), I figured he’d hit us with another cover or two.
The acoustic version of the mostly electronic Stockholm Syndrome songs worked well. “What Matters More” is a favorite, and while the studio version is full of electronics, the stripped down version still remained one of my favorites from the night. For other Derek fans (or Derek himself), have the Stockholm songs ever been played out live with keyboards and/or a full band (Joshua Moore, etc)? That would kick ass.
Setlist: about 90 mins
- The End / The Very End
- The Spirit Vs. The Kick Drum
- New Law
- I Hate Everything (But You)
- Freddie, Please
- A Love That’s Stronger Than Our Fears
- I Love/Hate You
- God’s Hometown [Caedmon’s Call]
- I Just Don’t Want Coffee [Caedmon’s Call]
- Wedding Dress
- Heaven
- What Matters More
- She Must And Shall Go Free
- (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding [Nick Lowe]
“Spirit vs. Kick Drum,” “Love/Hate,” and the Caedmon’s “Coffee” were some other favorite selections from the night. His banter was charming as usual. I was surprised he didn’t talk about Shawn Colvin being on his flight to Eugene… alas, perhaps he was distracted by Delta not being as gentle with his guitar as he’d have liked… assuming his guitar makes it back to Nashville with him, he needs to get a few things checked out (loose screw or something).

REVIEW: Reptet @ Luckey’s (Eugene, OR – 1/14/11)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM
A rare nice, non-rainy evening in Eugene on Friday… how do you start a show? You get your gear and head outside! Reptet did just that… wearing drums and horns, they hit the street right outside Luckey’s to get the crowd pumped as well as bring in some surprised passersby. After their Reptet-ization of a Chamillionaire song, they shuffled and bounced back inside, bringing more people in after them than were originally were in the bar. First song, first stroke of genius.
This was the first show of their West Coast CD Release tour (see dates below). Their 4th studio album AT THE CABIN just came out, and after a couple spins… I’m totally digging it. Great fun-romp of a jazz sextet. A little bit of goofing around, a little bit of standard following mixed with standard setting, and a little bit of punk & experimental sensibilities with a solid rhythm section. To me, this is what a jazz combo from (my) young generation should be like. Plus I’m a sucker for brass & reed-based jazz…

Reptet is made up of Samantha Boshnack (trumpet & vox), Chris Credit (sax/clarinet/flute), Izaak Mills (sax/clarinet/flute & vox/fake phone calls), Nelson Bell (trombone/sousaphone), Tim Carey (acoustic & electric bass), and John Ewing (drums & vox). They played about 70 minutes, and hit a few unidentified songs, but here are the ones I know they played…
Setlist:
- Chamillionaire on the street
- Zeppo
- Snow Leopard x 3
- unknown
- Skcorcissalc
- Something Like What.
- brains
- Fish Market
They ended about 15 minutes ’til midnight, and while I wanted to stick around for Eugene-based jazz combo Eleven Eyes, I had to call it a night. Thanks for making Eugene a part of your CD release tour, Reptet! See you again soon!

Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 1 #12
One a month in 2010… finally wrapped.
Derek Webb‘s Democracy Vol 1… This month, it is “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” a hymn by 18th Century Robert Robinson. While hymns don’t do it for me… I like Derek’s take on this hymn’s recording. Nice keyboards and vocals (sounds like he’s singing in a large space like a choir loft).
Oh, and if you missed it, Derek Webb put out his instrumental album Feedback on November 2nd. Check out my review of it HERE. I’ll also be reviewing his upcoming Eugene Oregon show (Jan 20th @ WOW Hall). Check back for that.
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 1 was part of the Stockholm Syndrome pre-order package, but it is now a stand-alone item over at the DW store. Only $6 (USD) and you get the following for 2010:
- January: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
- February: Coldplay – Fix You
- March: Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’
- April: Gnarls Barkley – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul
- May: Sufjan Stevens – Chicago *a personal fave*
- June: U2 – Where the Streets Have No Name
- July: Huey Lewis & the News – Power of Love
- August: The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby *a personal fave*
- September: Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence
- October: Radiohead – Karma Police *a personal fave*
- November: Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah
- December: Robert Robinson – Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
Volume 2? You decide!!! Details to come out soon. It will be a 10 issue volume (starting in March 2011) with a slightly lower entry price (per DW’s recent tweets). Voting on songs to be in February.
~Dan – np: Kevin Moore – Shine (soundtrack to Küçük Kıyamet)

Democracy Vol. 1 is the first in a series of subscription based albums of cover songs that Derek will be recording annually, starting January 2010. Those who participate will not only receive the exclusive album, but will democratically decide what songs Derek will record.
Ever wished you could hear Derek cover your favorite Beatles song? Or Backstreet Boys song? Or even re-record your favorite old Caedmon’s Call song? Here’s your chance. Songs will be nominated and voted down to 12. Derek will record them (demo quality) and deliver them digitally (320kbps MP3s), one song per month for 12 months. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb (for Volume 2)!
Michael Kelsey – Submerged (2011)
Michael Kelsey is quite possibly the most intensely amazing guitar player I have ever seen – and I’ve seen a lot of them. He’s a phenom in the live setting. He pops, he jumps, he loops, he bends… I’ve heard his style being described as “progressive aggressive acoustic.” It fits! Once, I even saw him change a guitar string while still playing. He didn’t even miss a beat…

Last week I put out a post about anticipated albums in 2011. Had I even known about the Michael Kelsey’s surprise attack, it would have made that list – easily! Well, his 6th studio album Submerged was announced on Thursday, December 30th – and it’s officially out now!!!
If you happen to live near West Lafayette, Indiana – you should go to the CD release party on January 15th, 2011 (FB event link). He’s also doing a little midwest tour (I miss being able to see him now that I live out in Oregon). If you are a downloader, the album is out now on the Amazons…
If you dig CDs (like I), it’s available via his website with a super-easy PayPal purchase option:

Mine is on the way as I type this. For a taste of what the album’s like:
Do yourself a favor. New years resolution: new music! :)
‘Speak With Ghosts’ by Anakronic Electro Orkestra
One of my favorite EPs of 2009 was Anakronic Electro Orkestra‘s The Yiddish Part. My only complaint with the EP? It was too short. Well, in mid-November 2010, unbeknown to me at the time, they came out with their debut full-length Speak With Ghosts. It’s digital only at this stage, with Amazon’s mp3 Download department being the best choice (which I found out after I bought it on iTunes). Anyway, well worth the coin spent!
AEO hail from Toulouse, France, and crank out a mighty fine mixture of drum & bass mixed with Eastern European-fused klezmer. Their new album is a 40+ minute shuffle through a modern klezmer forest – including one song featuring David Krakaeur (another favorite musician of mine). I think AEO is also great for fans of Beats Antique and Balkan Beat Box.
I just downloaded Speak With Ghosts, and it’s definitely vying for a favorite in 2010. See, this is why it’s so hard to put these lists out. December 26th, and I have a new one pop on to the list. :)

2010 mix
Time for this years mix CD… check out 2009’s over here. No major theme this time like prior mixes… the only rule I placed before myself was that everything is current (i.e.- released in 2010).
The following songs were put on the mix CD from lossless sources where possible and for promotional purposes only (read: free direct market advertising to people who decidedly love music). Most of the artists on this compilation are independent (put out the music themselves) or signed to smaller, independent labels. If you like what you hear, check out their music / support them with your wallet if you are able. The artists’ Webpage, MyFace & Spacebook (whether official or not), and Amazon links are available for each song below. I’ve also included concert review links if I’ve seen the artist recently.
If you want one of these mix CDs, message me (see my “About” page).
PDF front liner is available HERE (designed to print double-sided).

01 Mike Patton “Il Cielo In Una Stanza” from Mondo Cane
Mike Patton of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantômas, et cetera is known for more boisterous, left of center fare. With Mondo Cane, he classes up the joint that is Ipecac Records. Mondo Cane, named after the film, is Mike’s homage to 50s Italian pop songs. He croons some classic Italian songs with the backing of the Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini conducted by Aldo Sisillo. The artwork, in both CD digipack and vinyl, is stupendous. This is a magnificent record – both aurally and visually. It’ll rank near the top of my upcoming year-end lists…
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
02 Charlotte Gainsbourg & Beck “IRM” from IRM
IRM came out in late November 2009 – which was after I had done last year’s mix; so I’m sneaking it into this year’s mix. Beck collaborated with singer/actress Charlotte on the whole album (outside of one song). It’s a nice poppy-electronic mix… some French tunes as well (her father is French musical legend Serge Gainsbourg). The album and track were inspired by her head trauma in 2007 (“IRM” is the French acronym synonymous with what we call an “MRI machine” in the US). My favorite part may be that the IRM delivers rhythmic support to the track.

03 Ellery “Pieces (live)” original from This Isn’t Over Yet
This version is from Ellery’s live album that preceded their wonderful 2nd studio album that hit this year. Ellery is one of my favorite things in Cincinnati… I miss being able to see them multiple times a year (sad face). Husband/wife duo of Justin & Tasha Golden craft singer-songwriter pop songs… usually layered nicely on their albums with the help of producer, knob-twiddler Ric Hordinski (of Over the Rhine fame). This album is with Malcolm Burn at the helm (Daniel Lanois / Bob Dylan / Iggy Pop / Kaki King / Emmylou Harris / etc).
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
04 Comic Wow “Nice Chaps” from Library Catalog Music Series: Music for Mysteries of Mind Space and Time
Asthmatic Kitty’s Library Catalog Music Series (LCMS) is much more hit than miss. There have been a couple albums that didn’t interest me for multiple listens, but Comic Wow’s settled nicely from the get go. LCMS (as a series) is made up of instrumental albums designed for possible use in films and television, background sounds for home or office. Per the P.R., “Comic Wow are sonic illustrators, alchemists, designers, dilettantes’, poets, teachers, Socialists, and outdoorsmen whose advocacy of affordable colored cod pieces helped influence the look of thirty-third century America.” Whatever you call it, I like it.

05 Holy Fuck “Red Lights” from Latin

Despite what you think of their choice of band name, these Toronto band continue to put out great, groove-infused live electronic music that is both experimental and a poppy-force in the indie rock movement. Latin, their third full length album, grabbed me immediately when it came out this past May… and it’s #1 with a bullet as far as instrumental albums go in 2010. To top it off, they swung through Oregon twice this year (both excellent shows), and they put out quite possibly the cutest video for the raddest song (“Red Lights” – click the kitty to the right). The video now has over 1,000,000 views on the YouTubes. Only 900,000 views are from me.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
06 Damien Jurado “Beacon Hill” from Saint Bartlett
I got into Damien Jurado via the Seattle-based melancholy, indie singer-songwriter scene (i.e.- Pedro the Lion / David Bazan). While similar in general geography and friendship, Damien strikes me as more of a pure “songwriter” when compared to David’s social critique set to music. Saint Bartlett fits well into Damien’s oeuvre. At a show this past February (6 months before the album came out), I hardly knew any of the songs but felt as though I did. That’s a testament to his craft.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
07 Jeanne Cherhal “Certains Animaux” from Charade
I first heard Jeanne Cherhal when we picked up her second album (Douze fois par an) when in Toulouse, France, for my MBA program in 2004. Only available in France, I’ve managed to get her albums via Amazon.fr (good thing the buttons are in roughly the same spot). I still don’t know what she’s saying, but I dig her style.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
08 Nellie McKay “The Portal” from Home Sweet Mobile Home
Nellie McKay’s move to Verve (instead of Sony) has been good for her. They seem to give her free reign to put out Doris Day cover albums one year and an album of originals the next. HSMH is a return to the quirky, diverse collection of songs that drove me to fall in love with her. “The Portal” is one of the mellower tunes from the album… the rest of the album is full of Nellie’s modern piano jazz-pop, ukulele ditties, and even a pro-animal reggae tune. The album has grown on me nicely, and I’m looking forward to more Nellie in the near future. She seems to be in a period of prolificity as of late. This is greatly welcomed.

09 Puscifer “The Humbling River (Duet Mix)” from C is for… EP
When Tool / A Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Keenan isn’t rocking with those bands (both had touring activity this year), he’s usually tending to his grapes or noodling around on some mildly offensive, but well-crafted music with his other side-project Puscifer. The C is for… EP actually came out last year, but since it was digital only at that stage and since the 2010 CD & vinyl releases contained a touch of new material – it fits the criteria for this year’s compilation. He also put out new mixes / remixes for the Blood Into Wine documentary (about the Arizona wine scene). That record is called Sounds Into Blood Into Wine. As I type this, I actually got a call from my local Eugene Oregon wine/beer shop (16tons). They have my Caduceus/Merkin order in stock… so, coincidentally, I’ll be dropping some major coin on some of Maynard’s wine very shortly… glug glug.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
10 Haftor Medbøe Group “Pneumatic” from A Box of Monkeys EP
This is another record that came out in late 2009… but I got it in 2010 and iTunes recognized it as 2010 (plus it was too late to be stricken from the CD mix rolls, as I liked it too much). The track faatures some nice guitar-based jazz, and the EP also features some songs with vocals that aren’t too unlike Björk or Under Byen (also known as “a-OK with me”). It’s a delightful EP that put Haftor on my radar… for good.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
11 Sufjan Stevens “Futile Devices” from The Age of Adz
The first Sufjan track that made its way onto this 2010 compilation comes from his second release from 2010. The Age of Adz is a odd musical assembly. At first I didn’t know what to think of it, then I started to like it, and then after seeing him live – I truly loved the album. This song is actually one of the songs that I fell in love with right away. For those not familiar with Sufjan, this track fits better with some of his earlier work and not so much with Adz as a whole. But I think if you have an open mind and a desire to explore, you may very well fall in love with this record as well.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
12 AutorYno “Overture Automatique” from Pastrami Bagel Social Club
I am fans of some of the other Jewish rock acts on John Zorn’s Tzadik label: like Eyal Maoz’s Edom, Jon Madof’s Rashanim, and Yoshie Fruchter’s Pitom. The description for this AutorYno debut from Tzadik was “a wild klezmer/rock fusion by this crazed band of Paris-born punk rockers… AutorYno hits with a hardedged sound and an exciting musical imagination. Full of youthful energy, massive guitar and centered by a powerful beat, they present eleven instrumentals that combine the power of rock with a taste of Jewish tradition.” Regardless of Tzadik’s usual/expected hyperbole, I couldn’t not get it. I’m glad I did, and I will say that it will rank high amongst my instrumental finds in 2010.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
13 Glen Phillips “The Innocent” from Tornillo
The voice of Toad the Wet Sprocket has been putting out some fantastic albums since his first solo album (2000’s Abulum). Tornillo was recorded in 2003 with David Garza, but was shelved / lost. Many of the songs were re-recorded and put out on 2005’s Winter Pays For Summer (a favorite of mine). Regardless of some of the songs making their way out to the fans, there are still some never-before-released gems on here. Glen put it out about a month ago via his bandcamp page. $7. A total steal.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
14 Beats Antique “Egyptic” from Blind Threshold
I got to see Zoe Jakes of Beats Antique twice this year… once with Beats Antique during Eugene Celebration, and once with the Indigo Bellydance troupe as part of their Le Serpent Rouge tour. She had a knee in a brace during Eugene Celebration; so she lended her stage presence to additional percussion instead of dance – which was unfortunate. Beats Antique is a bellydance-friendly, electronic and live instrument band from the Bay Area. Elements of Balkan music and tribal-fusion dance music. “Egyptic” is indicative of their infectuous sound.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
15 The Weepies “Empty Your Hands” from Be My Thrill
Syrupy singer-songwriter pop is not my bailiwick, but I do find myself drawn to it on occasion. I guess even my CD collection needs a “rom-com” soundtrack every now and again. The Weepies write well-crafted songs about love and life. It’s hard to say anything bad about them.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
Sigur Rós-frontman’s debut solo album was going to be an acoustic affair, and then it turned into a lushly produced, Rós-ian opus with a multimedia firestorm of a tour (two U.S. legs with stunning stage design by 59 Productions). Jónsi is superbly brilliant and and ambivalently hyper-sensitively shy individual (ex. his abrupt cancelation of in-store performance tour) and boisterous-acting performer (ex. his magnificent stageshow). This album makes me excited for more solo work in the future, but I hope his day job with Sigur Rós is not on hold for too much longer.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
17 George Hrab “Hai Yookito ‘Ya” from Trebuchet
George Hrab creates one of my favorite podcasts ever… the Geologic Podcast. It’s not about geology. It’s about science, skepticism, and his general life as a musician from Bethlehem, PA. He is both humorous and intelligent, and he puts out great albums as well. Trebuchet is his 6th studio album, and it features some great instrumental songs as well as some witty numbers fitting his skeptical, atheistic viewpoint. One of my favorite songs on it is “A Small Comfort,” which is about the death of his dog Oscar. I’d put it on a mix CD, but it honestly makes me cry everytime I hear it. I also give George some kudos for kicking off his album with the Christopher Hitchens’ inspired “God Is Not Great” (an atheist pop song). Bravo!
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
18 Kaki King “Falling Day” from Junior
Kaki King is a guitar phenom, and this is her second album in a row that seems to be moving more towards turning into a more vocal, indie rock songstress. It’s still full of her amazing guitarwork, but brings in a whistful lyricism. I’m still getting used to her “vocal legs,” but I like what I hear so far.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
19 John Zorn’s The Dreamers “Hashul” from Masada Book Two: Book of Angels, Vol. 14 (Ipos)
Let’s just put this out there now… with thirteen albums and a DVD out in 2010, John Zorn might seem to have more misses than hits. Well, I don’t think there’s been a more consistent set of songs than his Masada songs, and there hasn’t been a more consistently great series than the Masada Book Two series (Zorn’s Masada songs covered by others). The Dreamers is a supergroup, too: Marc Ribot, Joey Baron, Cyro Baptista, Kenny Wollesen, Trevor Dunn and Jamie Saft – pillars in the adventurous, downtown NYC scene.
«°¤°» ¤ ¤ «°¤°»
20 Sufjan Stevens “The Owl and the Tanager” from All Delighted People EP
This is my favorite song from Sufjan’s 50+ minute “EP” from earlier this year. Beautiful and haunting, and again, not as characteristic of the rest of the EP, which seems more experimental and adventurous compared to “Owl” or his older material. Originally only released online via bandcamp, the EP saw physical form (CD & vinyl) earlier this month. I’m looking forward to spinning the vinyl when it hits my front porch.

Let me know what you think…
unfortunately missing (due to space or flow limitations, or that I simply didn’t get them in the mail yet): Kevin Moore’s Shine, Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (Sean Lennon & Charlotte Kemp Muhl)’s Acoustic Sessions, Mogwai’s Special Moves/Burning, Zero 7’s Record… and John Zorn’s Moonchild Trio Ipsissimus, because I didn’t want to scare you. Oh well, those may make it on my “favorite albums” of 2010 list.

Glen Phillips’ archived “Tornillo” album
Glen Phillips (the voice of Toad the Wet Sprocket) just let people know that he finally released from the archives the album Tornillo. It was recorded in 2003 and has some tunes that eventually made it onto one of my favorite albums of his – Winter Pays For Summer.
Tornillo is out now on Bandcamp for only $7 (or more – pay what you want) or streaming for free. I know I’ll be downloading it once I get home…
He also mentioned that Toad the Wet Sprocket is sending out an email later this week with a free download link to their first recorded studio work in years… a cover of Sam Phillips‘ “It Doesn’t Feel Like Christmas.”

Jelly Jam – Additives (EP)
The Jelly Jam supergroup featuring Ty Tabor (King’s X), John Myung (Dream Theater) and Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs) is working on album #3. They just announced last night the digital release of Additives…

Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 1 #11
One a month in 2010…
Derek Webb‘s Democracy Vol 1 is rolling along… This month, it is “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. Interesting sounds coming through my speakers… sounds vintage (guitar & keyboard tones and recording). Looking forward to listening to this on better-than-my-work-PC-speakers. The high-end is too much for this PC, methinks. I dig it, though. Nice pacing, and different than a Martin Sexton (or other singer-songwriter) version.
Oh, and if you missed it, Derek Webb put out his instrumental album Feedback on November 2nd. Check out my take on it HERE.
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 1 was part of the Stockholm Syndrome pre-order package, but it is now a stand-alone item over at the DW store. Only $6 (USD) and you get the following (plus future releases):

Volume 2? You decide!!!
~Dan – np: Múm – Loksins Erum Við Engin

Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb!

REVIEW: Eisley @ WOW Hall (Eugene, OR – 11/14/10)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

I got into Eisley after a Paste video sampler with the video for “Marvelous Things” (from their Warner debut). It’s a well shot video… bright colors and mopey* looking kids singing excruciatingly hooky pop-rock (*-ah, the mid-2000s). Little did I know that they were all related (sisters & a brother). When the young DuPree kids started (as Moss Eisley) – Chauntelle was 15, Sherri was 13, Stacy was 8, and Weston was about 11 or 12. They were later joined by Garron DuPree (their cousin) when their bassist Jonathan Wilson left. Familial band make-up and young starting ages aside, they write great songs. In fact, the familial slant probably helps with their songwriting. It’s definitely in their genes.
I’ve been a fan of theirs since 2005, but they’re touring schedule has been elusive and just didn’t line up with my calendar. So, five years in the making… my first Eisley show… the “Over the River and Through the Wood” Tour. They just signed with Equal Vision Records, after a long battle to get let out of their Warner contract. Their third studio album (which I think has been done for some time) will come out on Equal Vision in early 2011.

Christie DuPree was the first opener. She was accompanied by Collin DuPree. Let’s just assign that last name to everyone on stage last night (ok, not Ives the Band – but there were 7 DuPrees on stage at some point last night!!). Christie went on around 8pm and played a nice handful of songs over the next 30 minutes. She had a acoustic-pop, singer-songwriter vibe… and her voice was very Eisley-esque. Of course, that’s not a shock, as she is their little sister. I could see some maturity in the tunes, and I think shes got a solid songwriting base with plenty of room to grow and progress, too. Definitely enjoyable! She had a homemade EP for sale… and I imagine she’ll be on the road with Eisley in the near future, too.

Ives the Band went on around 8:45 and played a bit over a half hour as well. They have been described as Beatles-esque. That’s a tough description to match, and while I don’t think they hit that mark (again – tough to do), they had some nice hooks and melodies. Great power pop from San Diego. Their album, The Incredible Story of Mr. Birch, is out now.

Eisley hit the stage around 9:45 and started right into their set without much chit-chat. Sherri & Stacy shared lead vocal duties last night, and even though Sherri was sick, she pulled off her songs quite well. In fact, had she not mentioned it, I might not have noticed.

Of their 19 song set, my guess is Sherri covered 2/3 of the set’s lead vocal duties (too lazy to count it up – sorry!). The 300-400 or so fans at the WOW Hall got treated by many favorites from their two albums, Room Noises and Combinations, as well as a couple of new songs…

Setlist: about 75 mins
- The Valley
- Invasion
- Ten Cent Blues
- Come Clean
- Brightly Wound
- Tree Tops
- Marvelous Things
- Go Away
- Telescope Eyes [acoustic]
- My Lovely [acoustic]
- Kind [acoustic / new song]
- Golly Sandra
- Many Funerals
- I Could Be There For You
- Memories
- I Wasn’t Prepared
- Sad [new song]
- Lost at Sea
- Ambulance
No Encore
Some of my favorites were the acoustic pieces, as well as the aforementioned “Marvelous Things.” Great show, great band. They’re going to be on the road again in the spring of 2011 when their new album comes out. I’m glad they’ve added Eugene to their touring plans now and in the future.

REVIEW: dredg @ Wonder Ballroom (Portland, OR – 11/9/10)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

Call me a focused, but I showed up shortly before dredg‘s 8:35pm start time and left immediately after*. Frontman Gavin Hayes came on and said something along the lines of “we’re hypocrites,” and they kicked into their first song “Ode to the Sun” – a bombastic lead off from Catch Without Arms. I’m not sure what he was referring to regarding the “hypocrites” comment, maybe it was just the mood he was in…

As one of the several openers, they only got an opener-sized slot, but they made the most of it…
Setlist: about 45 mins
- Ode To The Sun
- Same Ol’ Road
- Pariah
- Jamais Vu
- Upon Returning [new song]
- Bug Eyes
- Saviour
- Lightswitch
- Down to the Cellar
Their new album, as of yet untitled, comes out March 29, 2011. If it’s anything like The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion – it’ll be awesome. Great melodic prog-ish rock. Gavin tweeted on Nov 5th that the album was done (with compelling photographic proof):

*– or perhaps call me dickish… I love music, but I don’t generally enjoy the 4 or 5 band “rock tours” – especially when 3-4 of the bands are underwhelming and the crowd is annoying (see POV video below). I will apologize, as I didn’t give Circa Survive a fair shake (or a shake at all). I’m sure they’re great. Sorry, after a 4 hour round-trip drive, a couple sour beers at Cascade Brewing and dredg was what I cared about. And I’m getting old (rock bands! get off my lawn!). Sorry. It is what it is. If the Circa Survive kids troll my comment section… well, it’s understood.
