EARTH’s Dylan Carlson – Wonders from the House of Albion
The frontman from sludge/drone/doom metal pioneer’s EARTH is coming out with a solo album via Kickstarter…
(Dylan on the far left)
Dylan Carlson is creating his first major solo project outside of earth. There will be a limited edition lp/dvd/book and cd/dvd/book (500 of each format) and a special pressing of 150 copies (lp only) with personalized ex libris by Simon Fowler (who will also do the cover and end papers). The illustrations will be by Kiyo Lappalainen. The limited edition books will be pop-up style. There will also be an open edition with regular flat printing in a cd booklet and flat lp printing.
The recording will combine field recordings from various megalithic and other sites of human/fairy encounters across the UK, also the use of ritual and folkloric magical practices. The expedition will be filmed by Clyde Petersen. These recordings will be layered with Dylan’s interpretations of classic Scotch-English ballads about human/fairy encounters from early modern England and Scotland (15th-18th century). It will also feature guest vocalists to sing the songs.
This is not being done through a label, as earth’s output has, but is a labor of love/obsession of Dylan’s. Being primarily of Scotch-English descent, this is an historical journey to his personal and cultural past, embracing music/folklore/the occult dimension and history. This is also result of personal experience’s of ‘the other side’. His blog has details, if interested. The field recordings will be accomplished in April-May of 2012. The rest of the recording/mastering will be finished in summer and early fall, the artwork is an ongoing process, already begun. Dylan is planning to have it all done for a May 2013 release. Join in the restoration of magic, a return to a world of spirits. Where all objects have a will of their own and a language they speak in, and we have learned how to speak with them again. It will be titled “Coleman Grey presents Falling with a Thousand Stars and Other Wonders from the House of Albion.”
You can join in on the Kickstarter HERE. Despite the May 2013 release date, this project needs funding by February 12th, 2012.

Earth’s new album
Sludge metal, drone craftsman Earth come back with a new album in February called Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1. This follows up their stupendous 2008 album, The Bees Made Honey in the Lion Skull. Angels/Demons comes out on Southern Lord, and frontman Dylan Carlson and percussionist Adrienne Davies brought in former Nirvana cellist Lori Goldston and K Records artist Karl Blau to join the lineup. Classic 1993 album Earth 2 producer Stuart Hallerman is again at the controls.
- Old Black
- Father Midnight
- Descent to the Zenith
- Hell’s Winter
- Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1
This album is definitely high on my anticipation list for 2011. They’ve been around for a long time, but I didn’t get into them until 2008 with Bees Made Honey…, and then I saw them at WOW Hall in June 2008. Brilliant show.

REVIEW: The Melvins @ John Henry’s (Eugene, OR – 7/7/10)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM
A hot and sweaty return to Eugene, just under a year from when they were last here… the Melvins rocked hard on John Henry’s sticky stage. This was a waaaay early show (6pm doors, 7pm start time); so I missed the opener, Totimoshi. From what I heard on MySpace, I wish I hadn’t missed them. Oh well, on to the Melvins…
This was near the end of their June/July tour with Toptimoshi, which included a mid-June stint with Isis (see split Melvins 12″ vinyl with Isis to the right – I picked up one at the Isis show in late May). Being near the end of a month-long tour, the Melvins had enough practice along the way… they ripped through many songs from their back catalogue and their brand new release, The Bride Screamed Murder (out now on Ipecac).
That album is the Melvins’ first album to ever hit the Billboard 200 chart. I guess it goes to show you, corporate rock is dead if an indie sludge metal band can break the chart with 2,800+ units moved… when their “hit album” Houdini moved 110,000 units to date never got there. Well, I doubt Buzzo and rest of the Melvins care about chart success. I just think it’s funny to see the industry implode on its own greed. I’m glad indie artists, like those on Ipecac and other many great indie labels, are still cranking away.
The show was quite good. Despite who dark and hot & sweaty John Henry’s is, the sound quality was right on… no bad feedback or muddy sound – beyond the normal intended muddiness that is the Melvins. As mentioned before, a great mix of older tunes and material from their latest. I’m bad on their song names; so here’s a tentative setlist based on prior recent shows. If anyone has any help (especially on 2nd set), I’d greatly appreciate it…

REVIEW: The Melvins @ John Henry’s (Eugene, OR – 8/9/09)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM
I hear that King Buzzo has three dogs.
I bet he walks them really slow.
So, The Melvins have been around for… ever. First album in 1986, but I didn’t get turned onto them until Melvins’ guitarist King Buzzo joined Mike Patton’s avant-noise metal supergroup Fantômas on the 1999 debut (along with Mr Bungle’s Trevor Dunn & Slayer’s Dave Lombardo). I saw The Melvins in 2003 play with Skeleton Key & Mike Patton’s Tomahawk in Columbus, Ohio (Tomahawk’s Mit Gas tour). I found a new respect for a mainstay on Patton’s Ipecac Recordings… The Melvins are a major force in heavy music.
Some history… they’re from Seattle and were considered an early founder of grunge (Kurt Cobain listed them as a major influence). The Melvins have since moved into what could be best called “sludge metal“… which spurred Earth, and subsequently Sunn O))), in the drone & doom metal sub-genres. All that to say, The Melvins have been around for a long time and have been an artistic force in music.
I haven’t had a solid chance of seeing them in 6 years. They swung through Eugene last year, but I was out of town. Last time, they played a bigger venue (WOW Hall), but this time, they played two full sets (with no opener)… so I’ll take it. :) This was only their 2nd date of their 2009 U.S. Summer tour (see dates at the bottom), but they were pretty tight regardless.
They took the stage right at 7:30 and played six songs as a duo, just Buzz Osborne on guitars and Dale Crover on drums. They were then joined by Jarred Warren on bass and Coady Willis on a 2nd set of drums. Their first set started with more of the grunge/punk but had plenty of the sludge to go around. It was a powerful 40-45 minute set.
They came back on 20 minutes later and belted out another 50 minute set without stopping. “Hooch” was the highlight for me, but it was an amazing show all around. No banter, barely stopping to tune… just a full force, heavy wave of music.
Setlist:
- 1st set ~ Dale drum intro -> Ballad of Dwight Fry [Alice Cooper cover]
- It’s Shoved
- Let Me Roll It [McCartney cover]
- Suicide in Progress
- Oven
- Black Bock
- Let God Be Your Gardener
- Pigs of the Roman Empire [Jared & Coady join]
- The Talking Horse
- The Bloated Pope
- Dog Island
- Dies Iraea
- 2nd set ~ Dies Iraea (cont’d)
- Billy Fish
- Mr. DNA [Devo cover]
- Anaconda
- Zodiac
- The Kicking Machine
- Civilized Drums
- Blood Witch
- Hooch
- Smiling Cobra
- With Teeth
- Night Goat
- The Bit
*- from Buzzo’s setlist, corrections by Ryan (Idlehanz)
Overall… bloody brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it, and I don’t know half of their songs… :) I’m definitely seeing them anytime they come through town. A great band with 2 great sets!!
Their latest CD, 2008’s Nude With Boots, is great. And the concept behind their upcoming CD, Chicken Switch, is intriguing. It’s a remix album, but not a normal remix album. Each song is a remix of an entire Melvins’ album (boiled into one song). Some of the remixers included are Matmos, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, Eye Yamatsuka, and Merzbow (Masami Akita). It’s out on September 29th on Ipecac. Read more over at themelvins.net. I’m looking forward to it…

The Melvins
I saw the Melvins open up for Mike Patton’s Tomahawk (a Patton collaboration with Jesus Lizard’s Duane Denison) on the Tomahawk – Mit Gas tour. The other opener (before the Melvins), Skeleton Key, was more interesting to me at the time than the Melvins. Anyway, I dug the Melvins as well on that tour, but I never got any of their albums (I still don’t besides the “Fantômas-Melvins Big Band” album — but now they’re at least added to my Lala list).
The Melvins have been around forever (25 years or so)… which is forever in the rock band sense. They’re what some might call “sludge metal” or “slow punk.” They’ve got tons of albums (on majors like Atlantic, on indies like Ipecac). They’ve worked with the punk realm (Jello Biafra), the grunge realm (Melvin’s drummer Dale Crover used to play with Kurt Cobain), the avant-garde/noise realm (Buzzo is in Fantômas with Mike Patton), and with the art metal realm peeps (Adam Jones of Tool has played with them live / the Melvins have opened for Tool on several tours). They’ve also collaborated with Lustmord (who recently remixed some of Maynard’ James Keenans Puscifer tracks), and they plan on collaborating soon with Zu (an Italian hardcore/free-jazz band). Anyway, the Melvins are “well connected” in the scene. They’ve got a guitarist/singer (Buzz “King Buzzo” Osbourne) with very recognizable hair (video link).
Anyway, the main purpose of this post is that I’m totally diggin’ the tracks on MySpace from their upcoming Nude with Boots album (Ipecac – July 8th). Totally diggin’ as in… just about every track.
They’re going to be in Eugene, OR (W.O.W. Hall on July 24th). I’ll be in Cincinnati, OH, for a wedding. Rassen-frassen…
