Aimee Mann’s “Labrador” {remake of “Voices Carry”}

20th Sep 12 (Thu) 1 comment

Wow… the new Aimee Mann video for “Labrador” is a shot-for-shot remake of her video in ‘Til Tuesday for “Voices Carry“… clever, silly.

Labrador (2012)

Voices Carry (1985)

Boy, how she’s changed.  I much prefer newer Aimee Mann to ’80s Aimee Mann.  Her new album, Charmer, just came out this week… and she heads out on tour next week (click here for dates & the “Charmer” music video).  I’ll be at the Portland, Oregon, date on October 2nd.

This just in from Ipecac…

We wanted to let you know, that Mike Patton just wrapped up his score for the much buzzed about film, The Place Beyond the Pines. This is the new film by acclaimed director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine), who chose Patton to provide the music.

The film stars Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes and Rose Byrne. It got rave reviews at the recent Toronto International Film Festival and is slated for a 2013 release.

The Place Beyond the Pines is the multi-generational story of a motorcycle stunt rider (Gosling), who considers committing a crime in order to provide for his newborn child, an act that puts him on a collision course with a cop-turned-politician (Cooper).

‘Downtown Express’ (film) with Nellie McKay & Philippe Quint

4th Apr 12 (Wed) Leave a comment

Downtown Express is a new film by David Grubin.  Check out the trailer below:

Set in the world of Russian immigrants living in New York City, Downtown Express uses music to explore the clash of old world values against the lure and excitement of a new country. Under the watch of his loving but overbearing father, virtuoso violinist and Juilliard student Sasha (Grammy nominee Philippe Quint) prepares for a critical recital meant to launch his career.

Yet, he is increasingly drawn to the rhythms of the streets of New York, and when he meets singer-songwriter Ramona (acclaimed recording artist Nellie McKay), he joins her band, falls in love, and begins to lead a double life, careening frantically between two worlds. As his classical debut nears, Sasha must decide whether or not to break with his father, forging his own destiny.

And, per the film’s webpage…

[Nellie McKay’s] fifth album is due this September.

Downtown Express opens April 20th 2012 at the Quad Cinema in New York City.

Martin Freeman [aka “Tim Canterbury”] to join NBC’s The Office

31st Mar 12 (Sat) 2 comments

British actor Martin Freeman [the new Sherlock, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Office] is poised to appear in the 8th Season Finale of NBC’s The Office as Tim Canterbury (reprising this character from the original BBC show).  Some key plot-points are TOP SECRET, but an immediate bonding with John Krasinski’s character Jim Halpert will not be maintained for long.

Executive producers and creators of the show, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, said this in an NBC press release:

It makes sense and, in a way, brings the story full circle.  Without giving away too much, [Tim] will wrangle Jim out of a job [early next season], which will open up a ‘Jim & Pam spin-off’ that we’re planning for 2014.

The Season Finale air date has yet to be announced by NBC.  Watch Season Eight “on demand” NOW.

Sigur Rós – INNI (live album/film)

17th Aug 11 (Wed) 1 comment

Last week, Sigur Rós put out an enigmatic trailer titled INNI without any details.  Speculation of a live film was an easy guess… “Inni” is the shorthand name for the second track (“Inní mér syngur vitleysingur” aka “within me a lunatic sings“) on their last full-length album, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust.  Today they released the initial details about the upcoming release…

Inni is comprised of a double live album and seventy-five minute film of Sigur Rós’ last show before their well-documented “indefinite hiatus” at the end of 2008.

Recorded and shot over two nights at London’s Alexandra Palace at the close of the world tour around their fifth full length album, með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, Inni sees the band at the peak of their powers, captured on film for the first time as a core four-piece since they were joined by string section amiina at the start of the century. Directed by Vincent Morisset (Arcade Fire’s Miroir Noir), the film is set to debut at this year’s Venice Film Festival on September 3rd, 2011.

SIGUR RÓS - INNI

THE FILM

Inni is Sigur Rós’ second live film following 2007’s hugely-celebrated tour documentary Heima. Whereas that film positioned the enigmatic group in the context of their Icelandic homeland, providing geographical, social and historical perspectives on their otherworldly music, Inni focuses purely on the band’s performance, and stands as a stark counterpoint to Heima’s kaleidoscopic richness. Where Heima was lush and colorfully expansive, Inni is spare and near-monochromatic in its tunnel vision. Filmed in a manner that invites both intimacy and claustrophobia, Inni cocoons the viewer in a one-on-one relationship with the band, eschewing the audience for closeness, depicting how it feels for both band and fan to experience Sigur Rós live.

The film’s elegance and atmosphere are enhanced by Morisset’s re-filming of the original digital footage on 16mm, which was then re-filmed again, sometimes through prisms and other found objects, allowing Inni to look and feel like something recovered from the past. Interspersed with this is archival footage drawn from the band’s previous decade, dating back as far as 1998. This juxtaposition gives viewers the full scope of Sigur Rós’ origins, evolution, originality and influence.

THE DOUBLE LIVE ALBUM

The live album Inni – a first for the band – is comprised of the full set from Alexandra Palace, played in order with just one omission, and clocks in at one-and-three-quarter hours. Recorded by Sigur Rós’ in-house studio engineer Birgir Jón Birgisson, Inni’s live audio recording is far and away the best way of replicating the full-force effect of standing in front of one of the world’s most extraordinary bands for an evening.

When taken in together, Inni’s film and live album give us an incredible account of one of the most celebrated and influential rock bands of recent years, showing where they’ve come from, where they’ve been, and like all things Sigur Rós, where it is they will be going next.  More details of how, when and where Inni will enter the world will be made available shortly on sigur-ros.co.uk.

Mike Patton’s voice in ‘Tintin’ movie (maybe?)

11th Jul 11 (Mon) Leave a comment

From movieweb

Director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson bring the beloved adventures of Hergé’s roving reporter Tintin to life in the motion-capture adventure The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, which features performances from Jamie Bell, Simon Pegg, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis, Cary Elwes, and Nick Frost. A new image from the movie has been released, which features Tintin (Jamie Bell) and his faithful terrier Snowy (Mike Patton) pouring over a piece of evidence. Check it out below.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn Photo
The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn comes to theaters December 23rd, 2011.

If this is true, I’ll put this in the “glad he’s getting voice over work to help pay for his non-mainstream musical output” category for me.  I quick peek at IMDB doesn’t list him or the character Snowy.  Per CacaVolante (a Mr Bungle-themed tumblr), Patton’s management has not confirmed it.  For now, let’s put it in the rumor mill…

Searching for Elliott Smith (+ 5 uncovered songs)

6th May 11 (Fri) Leave a comment

24bit just posted some news about the Elliott Smith documentary Searching for Elliott Smith.  It’s set to screen at the Los Angeles New Wave International Film Festival (Sat 5/7 @ 2:30pm).  It’ll feature a Q&A with the filmmaker (Gil Reyes) and Elliott’s girlfriend at the time of his death – Jennifer Chiba.  It shows again on Sun 5/8 @ 8pm (no Q&A).

The synopsis of the documentary:

The first feature-length documentary about the greatest singer-songwriter of his generation. Elliott Smith’s intensely intimate songs helped popularize lo-fi, indie-rock: A traditionally underground genre until Smith’s mainstream effort ‘Miss Misery’ took Hollywood by surprise. But even after an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, he managed to fly mostly under the radar. And Smith wanted it that way. After his death in 2003, Smith’s peers understandably avoided the media. Granting very few print interviews… and NO on-camera interviews. Until now. From his high school days as a National Merit Scholar… to his early work in the Portland rock band, ‘Heatmiser’… to critical acclaim… to his mysterious death at the age of 34. We learn the dark motivations behind a musical genius. And discover how psychic pain can also produce timeless art. Appearances by filmmaker, Gus Van Sant who chose Smith’s music for the movie, ‘Good Will Hunting’. Also interviewed is Elliott’s fiancee, Jennifer Chiba. Chiba talks about the fight leading up to Elliott’s death and the LAPD’s ‘open investigation’ into possible homicide.

Go to the 24Bit page for five unreleased lo-fi YouTube’d Elliott Smith songs… tentatively titled: She Won’t Look at Me,  Where I Get It From,  Like a Cop,  I’m Gonna Get Crushed, and  Shiva Opens Her Arms.

Silverchair/Daniel Johns short film + free music from Owen Pallett

22nd Dec 10 (Wed) 2 comments

Two unrelated music new tidbits…

First off, Daniel Johns (frontman for Aussie rock trio Silverchair) will be part of a short film that received a grant under the 2010 Screen NSW Emerging Filmmakers Fund.  Josh Wakely, an experienced actor and writer and an emerging director, will have the opportunity to make My Mind’s Own Melody, a short musical drama he has written with Daniel Johns.  http://www.chairpage.com/news

Second, Owen Pallett just put out a free demo EP on soundcloud.  It’s instrumental except for a spot vocal appearance from Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond).  It is delightful.  Get it while it’s still a free download.  For other great Shara Worden guests spots… well, the Clogs record (with Sufjan Stevens guest spots, too) and Sarah Kirkland Snider‘s Penelope concept album rank high this year.

Yeah, my “Best Of” lists are still in the works.  It’s still 2010; so I’m not late. (I hate it how some people start putting out their lists in October… argh…)
