Ashley Peacock… help him make a new solo record in 2013!

16th Nov 12 (Fri) Leave a comment

My good-good friend from the Cincinnati area, Ashley Peacock, is breaking his 9 year silence as a solo musical artist.  His last solo album was 2003’s Precursor EP, which led into his brit-pop band The Times’ 2005 album Begin (link w/ audio samples).  His last album with a group was 2012’s Growing Concern (link w/ audio samples) under the Chance Brothers moniker.

He is long overdue for a solo album, and he’s trying to raise $1,750 via Kickstarter to put the finishing touches on the record.

Ashley Peacock Kickstarter

I’m not sure where he’ll go with his new record.  I love a lot of music, but I know when he’s working on something I need to support it.  I hope you’ll listen to some of his past stuff and give him your attention for what’s to come.

Odds weigh heavily that you’ll like it!  Go to the Kickstarter HERE.

Help Over the Rhine make a record… or two!

13th Nov 12 (Tue) 1 comment

In late 2010, Over the Rhine asked their fans to help them pre-fund a record.  It wasn’t through Kickstarter or PledgeMusic, but it worked very similarly.  Different levels, different perks.  They got enough funds together and made The Long Surrender, an amazing record produced by Grammy-winning Joe Henry.  That record was one of my favorite albums of 2011.

Over the Rhine’s Linford Detweiler & Karin Bergquist

Well, they’re doing it again, and this time it’s not just for an upcoming album, it’s for TWO upcoming albums…

The Farm

Advance copy a month ahead of release, extra digital demos each month, a 180-gram double-gatefold vinyl, a signed poster, a special concert at their farm in the Cincinnati area in May 2013 (Memorial Day weekend), executive producer credits, plating a tree on their farm with your name on it, passes to all their shows (except for Cayamo or the train tours) through 2014, and a private concert.

Blood Oranges in the Snow

Their third holiday / Christmas album, Blood Oranges in the Snow, has options such as additional digital bonus tracks, a boxset with their previous stellar Christmas albums (Darkest Night of the Year & Snow Angels), a gift-giving set of extra copies, planting a tree on their farm with your name on it, and a private Christmas concert.  The expected release is holiday season 2013 (Nov/Dec?).  I hate Christmas music, but OTR’s Darkest Night of the Year is one of my favorite albums, period. So, they convert a bah-humbug like me into a lover of this season’s music.

Wussy to embark on 2012 West Coast tour (needs help)

7th Feb 12 (Tue) Leave a comment

Cincinnati dusty indie rock quartet Wussy are going to hit the West Coast for the first time in June.  Their latest album, Strawberry, is EXCELLENT, and it is going to be available as a limited edition vinyl for Record Store Day 2012.  They’ve made a map for their tour in June, now they need our help…

We’ve just posted the itinerary for our first ever west coast tour in the events section here on FB. In case it wasn’t obvious, we do pretty much everything ourselves here in Wussyland and we need your help. We’ve never played most of these cities and whatever help you can give in finding appropriate venues and contacts we’d really appreciate it. In order to keep this a little more organized post your info in the event for the actual city we’re playing. We’re coming, we just need to figure out where!

The Chance Brothers “Ruby”

24th Jan 12 (Tue) 1 comment

One of my good friends from Cincinnati, Ashley Peacock, is back in the saddle making music again. His new band is called the Chance Brothers (Ash is “Butch Chance” and Todd Gilbert is “Bobby Chance”). The recorded their debut album over the holidays, and they just released the first single online – “Ruby.”

Check it out here:

Their album will come out in 2012… Follow them here:

If you’re in the Cincinnati area, they play the 86 Club on Saturday, January 28th (FB Event).

Jason Ludwig’s 2 new albums / Dave Douglas boxset

20th Oct 11 (Thu) Leave a comment

This fall is turning into a flippin’ brilliant season for new music… My Brightest Diamond, Wussy, and Puscifer… all gems.  Now some more…

Cincinnati-based singer-songwriter Jason Ludwig (formerly of Noctaluca) released two new albums last Friday.  I’ve spent a few days with them, and I LOVE-love-LOVE them.  I can’t say which one, Lost in Love or Tanglings, that I like more – but they’re both vying for a spot on my Best Albums of 2011 List.  They’re only available as a digital download (mp3 or FLAC) via Jason’s bandcamp page, but the awesome part… they’re only $5 each.

Go to jasonludwig.com for samples and then buy them.  Well-produced, well-arranged, creative singer-songwriter that reminds me of a cross between the pop of Glen Hansard (of the Swell Season and the Frames) and the creative of Daniel Johns (of Silverchair).  If you don’t like them, I’d be surprised.

More new music news…

My favorite living trumpet-player/composer, Dave Douglas, started a new digital download music series this year on his record label, Greenleaf Music, called GPS (Greenleaf Portable Series).  Greenleaf recently launched a cloud player with their entire catalog, they’re putting out an iPad/iPhone App, and they just announced that they’re going to put out the three GPS releases thus far (Rare Metals, Orange Afternoons, Bad Mango) as an extremely limited 3-CD boxset called Three Views.

More info coming soon from Greenleaf, but it’s expected before year’s end.

Wussy – Strawberry

4th Oct 11 (Tue) 1 comment

I don’t miss Cincinnati much.  I do miss a few choice eateries (Melt, Gajah Wong, Tellers, Lemongrass, tons of Indian) and I do miss being able to see some of my favorite bands play (Over the Rhine, Ric Hordinski, Ash Peacock, Ryan Adcock, Kim Taylor, Ellery, Jason Ludwig/Noctaluca, Wussy… the list could go on for a long time).

Well, I’m happy as a doggie in a strawberry field, because the aforementioned Wussy just put out their fourth full-length studio album – Strawberry.  Wussy’s a fantastic rock quartet made up of Chuck Cleaver, Lisa Walker, Mark Messerly, and Joe Klug.  They write catchy, poppy choruses and meld it perfectly with Midwest Americana-meets-indie-rock grit (or “Midwestern drone” as their press says).

Vocal duties are traded off with Chuck (of the Ass Ponys) and Lisa (of the Magic Words… and of my college days).  The samples I’ve heard so far as right in line with what I love about them.  Go hear for yourself (the entire album is up streaming with a few FREE downloads), and then pick up a copy for yourself on bandcamp (mp3 download or limited CD).

http://wussy.bandcamp.com/album/strawberry

FYI, the CDs are limited to only 100… and I’ve got one coming to me in Oregon, so grab one of the other 99 before it’s too late.  I can’t recommend Wussy, this album, and their prior albums enough.  A+++

Over the Rhine swing through Oregon

11th Nov 10 (Thu) Leave a comment

Over the years, Over the Rhine has achieved indie cred, gained notability and had the opportunity to open up for Bob Dylan, Adrian Belew, The Cowboy Junkies and many more. They have been featured in Paste Magazine’s Top 100 Living Songwriters and Indie Rock A-to-Z lists. They span genres from folksy singer-songwriter pop to jazzy, sultry gospel to rustic, storytelling Americana. Whichever “sound” Over the Rhine produces, husband-wife duo Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist live their lives in their songs. They are a treasure for those who know their work: the gentle tinkling of the keys, melodic strumming on an old acoustic guitar, pontifications and allegories of their daily life on the farm outside Cincinnati and the ambrosial poetic words from Bergquist’s microphone oozing through the cracks amongst the notes. Detweiler makes being a musical beat poet a realistic modern possibility. Bergquist’s provocative voice is offset by her down-to-earth charm and humor. That charm makes what they do seem more tangible, real and relatable. They could very well be in your living room, singing for you alone.

Fresh off their “Across the West” train tour, Over the Rhine’s stop in Eugene & Portland will be a special, intimate duo show — featuring an array of songs from Detweiler & Bergquist’s 20 year history and their forthcoming album, The Long Surrender (due out 1/11/11).

Eugene (Mon 11/15): doors at 7pm, show at 7:30 pm at WOW Hall
For more info: http://wowhall.org/events.php

Portland (Wed 11/17): doors at 7pm, show at 8pm at Aladdin Theater
For more info: http://aladdin-theater.com/show_page.aspx?eventid=1901

I’ll be at both.  If you see me shooting away near the stage, come and say “hi” during the break or afterwards.

So, Cincinnati folk-duo Over the Rhine has a new album coming out… it’s called The Long Surrender, and it comes out 1/11/11.  If you helped out with the pre-order campaign (mentioned back here and here), they are having a very special internet streaming listening party from Friday, October 8th at 6pm (PST) through Sunday, October 10th at 6pm (PST).

I’d post the link to the streaming-goodness… but I don’t want to get fired as a fan… again.

Look for a mini-review from me sometime next week.

Over the Rhine’s The Long Surrender (due 1/11/11)

12th Jul 10 (Mon) 1 comment

As posted on overtherhine.com

THE RECORD WE COULDN’T IMAGINE IN ADVANCE:

Our immense thanks to all of you who helped make the new Over the Rhine record a reality. It’s been christened THE LONG SURRENDER and is currently being mastered.
Tentative release date: 1.11.11.

All those who contributed will receive THE LONG SURRENDER well before the official release date, with extras. Look for a complete (long, rambling) update letter next week with much more, but suffice it to say, for now, our experience with producer Joe Henry and his cast of conjurers was nothing short of incredible.

Can’t wait for you to take the ride/hear for yourself.

Perfect release date, if you ask me!

Noctaluca’s final show

10th Jun 10 (Thu) Leave a comment

So, this came as a MySpace bulletin from Cincinnati rock outfit Noctaluca‘s profile last weekend, but hasn’t surfaced anywhere else… it’s sad news, and I hope it’s not true (but assume it is)…

Allow me to apologize for the last minute notice of Noctaluca’s last show, taking place TONIGHT at Play By Play Cafe in Cincinnati. I am personally not happy about this decision and I am VERY grateful for all of your love and support over the past 8 years. Rest assured, from the ashes of Noctaluca, a new project or projects shall emerge. The bar of songsmithery and sound quality has been raised by this band, and we will all take that with us wherever we go. There are unreleased tracks from the album we were working on floating around, so stay tuned for possible uploads, as well as new recordings by Jason, Aaron, Brandon, and Donovan. We could not have lasted this long without all of the encouraging words and love you all have given us. I personally thank you from the bottom of my heart. So, once again, I apologize for the last minute update, and try your damndest to make it to Play By Play Cafe tonight.

http://www.noctaluca.com doesn’t have any info yet… but again, it seems legit.  I hope Jason Ludwig and the rest of the guys do something creative together in the future.  For the photoset from their last show, check out Pat Strang’s flickr set.
