Science: neodymium magnet down a copper pipe
Coooooool…
The movement of the magnet induces an electric current in the copper and with the electrical current comes a magnetic field, which makes the magnet attracted to it. The magnet doesn’t stick to the wall as it falls because the induced current, and its corresponding magnetic field, are perfectly distributed so that the magnet feels magnetic force equally from all sides. The magnetic field slows the magnet, but can’t stop its fall because if the magnet stopped moving, the induced electric field would go away and the magnet would start falling again.

Future iPhones – what you can/cannot film & photograph?
Most people take spontaneous photo and videos these days with their iPhones or other smartphones. What happens when you’re at a concert and you pull out your phone and suddenly recording doesn’t work, because the iPhone thinks that you don’t have the proper permissions to take video…
via dvice
Apple has filed a patent that could help combat the latter, though still hinder the former. That is: a patent that protects intellectual property rights, but treats everyone like a potential pirate, rather than a valued customer.
The patent deals with making the iPhone sensitive to infrared signals, the kind that could let the device know that it’s somewhere where filming and photography aren’t welcome. A movie theater, for instance, shoots out these IR beams to interact with hearing aids for the impaired, and a museum or art gallery could put up receivers to let phones know they aren’t welcome.
These “IR signals” could easily be used to block photography or video recording anywhere— including rallies, protests and by the police. While I’d gladly accept the casualty of people not being able to flip out their iPhone in front of me at a concert, the tactic of blocking film & photos at rallies, protests, etc seems very scary to me.

Free Nellie McKay download (“One’s On the Way”)
As performed on Mountain Stage, Nellie McKay just made available a free mp3 download of “One’s on the Way” (right click & “save as”)… it is available as a call for support of WV Free – Advocates for Reproductive Health & Justice.
“One’s On the Way” is is a previously unreleased track. You can pick up Nellie’s latest album, Home Sweet Mobile Home, at the Amazons.
As far as future not-for-profit collaborations from Nellie, she’s contributing to a Farm Animal Benefit CD (to be released in September). It will feature new music from Moby, Yoko Ono, Matisyahu, members of the Buzzcocks and more. It’s called Home On the Range and is put out by CFEI & Planet CD NYC.
‘Home On The Range’ is a benefit compilation CD presented by the 501(c)(3) non profit organization CFEI. All proceeds from the sale of this CD are donated to a collective of farm animal sanctuaries including Woodstock Sanctuary, Happy Trails, Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Animal Acres and Kindred Spirits. These organizations rescue, feed, provide safe shelter and care for abused and neglected farm animals.
The benefit CD features eco-friendly packaging and includes “Compassion 101”, an exclusive accompanying educational booklet and resource guide. Simply by purchasing this music you are helping protect the lives of thousands of cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, turkeys, horses and rabbits. Home On The Range will be available in selected retail stores as well as a download via iTunes and Amazon.

Help Japan earthquake victims!
If you have the means to help the victims of the Japanese earthquake and subsequent tsunami, please do so. At this stage, donations of money is likely the best way to help those in need. Make sure you are giving to a reputable charity. In times of need, wolves come out. I’d recommend a well-known, global charity such as the Red Cross.
Related sidenote: The sludge metal band The Melvins played Australia & New Zealand and a serious earthquake hit. They are now in Japan. Please donate to the Red Cross and the Stop the Melvins from Bringing Earthquakes Fund. This band must be stopped… before it’s too late.
~Dan
PS- just kidding about the dangers of the Melvins, obviously. Long live King Buzzo & Co. They are doing well after Quake 2 in about a month. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and those displaced in Australia, New Zealand and Japan in these disasters.

On today, tomorrow, and the next 180 or so days, have a wonderful day that is now longer than the day before. If there’s anything else going on this weekend… well, have fun. Hopefully you are warm, fed, and with loved ones.
Oh, and if you celebrate Christmas, here’s a traditional Icelandic Christmas song for you, covered by Sigur Rós [courtesy of SR’s official webpage]:
