Digital Noise Academy’s kickstarter reboot
Yikes! I haven’t blogged all month! Keeping busy at work, not as many shows this month for me, and I suppose not much “new music” breaking in June. Fiona Apple’s new album The Idler Wheel coming out today; so grab that!
Also, I posted a couple months ago about Digital Noise Academy’s Kickstarter. The collaborative group is:
- Ken Andrews (Failure, On, Year of the Rabbit, worked with Tool, A Perfect Circle, NIN, Tenacious D, Copeland, etc)
- Sharky Laguana (Creeper Lagoon)
- Charlotte Martin
- Justin Meldal-Johnsen (NIN, Beck, Air, M83)
- Fernando Sanchez (Lenka, Ben Jelen, Racheal Yamagata, Chris Cornell)
- Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star, Sam Roberts).
The original Kickstarter had lofty goals, but didn’t meet them (too much, too short of a window)… well, they rebooted it and are almost there – needing only another $4k with 45 days to spare. I think it’s going to be a rad album!

FINALLY… Digital Noise Academy – debut album {kickstarter}
So, Digital Noise Academy/DNA (formerly Los Angeles Digital Noise Academy/LADNA) has been teasing us with new album promises way back since the MySpace days. The collaborative led by one of my favorite musicians Ken Andrews (Failure, On, Year of the Rabbit, worked with Tool, A Perfect Circle, NIN, Tenacious D, Copeland, etc) is what brings me to the table, but the other members are tops, too… Sharky Laguana (Creeper Lagoon), Charlotte Martin (Herself), Justin Meldal-Johnsen (NIN, Beck, Air, M83), Fernando Sanchez (Lenka, Ben Jelen, Racheal Yamagata, Chris Cornell), and Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star, Sam Roberts).
Well, now they officially have a kickstarter. I think it’s a great project, and I sincerely hope it gets made. Check out the first single they released two years ago (which will be on the album), then check out the Kickstarter page… rebooted link

They have already completed two songs “Melting Inside” and “Thursday Night Party.” Both these songs are currently available for free download on their website www.digitalnoiseacademy.com.

Damien Jurado – Static To Be Sold @ Pickathon (7″ release)

On February 21, Secretly Canadian will be releasing the upcoming Damien Jurado LP, Maraqopa, another collaboration with musician/producer and Cottage Grove-Oregon resident, Richard Swift.

My Brightest Diamond ‘All Things Will Unwind’ (Oct 18, 2011)
So, if I could have a blog solely dedicated to the music of Shara Worden/My Brightest Diamond, I would. I ‘found’ her via her opening slot for Sufjan Stevens’ Avalanche tour (Indianapolis 2006?). Her voice amazed me, and she has quickly become one of my favorite vocalists. She has operatic voice training, a clever wit, charming lyrics, and an indie-rock DIY mentality.
Her third studio album under the My Brightest Diamond moniker* has been announced… All Things Will Unwind will be released October 18, 2011.
For those unfamiliar, MBD creates some fantastic orchestral indie pop. She’s offering a FREE download of a song from the forthcoming album…

Free Nellie McKay download (“One’s On the Way”)
As performed on Mountain Stage, Nellie McKay just made available a free mp3 download of “One’s on the Way” (right click & “save as”)… it is available as a call for support of WV Free – Advocates for Reproductive Health & Justice.
“One’s On the Way” is is a previously unreleased track. You can pick up Nellie’s latest album, Home Sweet Mobile Home, at the Amazons.
As far as future not-for-profit collaborations from Nellie, she’s contributing to a Farm Animal Benefit CD (to be released in September). It will feature new music from Moby, Yoko Ono, Matisyahu, members of the Buzzcocks and more. It’s called Home On the Range and is put out by CFEI & Planet CD NYC.
‘Home On The Range’ is a benefit compilation CD presented by the 501(c)(3) non profit organization CFEI. All proceeds from the sale of this CD are donated to a collective of farm animal sanctuaries including Woodstock Sanctuary, Happy Trails, Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Animal Acres and Kindred Spirits. These organizations rescue, feed, provide safe shelter and care for abused and neglected farm animals.
The benefit CD features eco-friendly packaging and includes “Compassion 101”, an exclusive accompanying educational booklet and resource guide. Simply by purchasing this music you are helping protect the lives of thousands of cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, turkeys, horses and rabbits. Home On The Range will be available in selected retail stores as well as a download via iTunes and Amazon.

Ken Andrews posted a new blog with an update about Digital Noise Academy, his online collaboration with Charlotte Martin, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Sharky Laguana, Tommy Walter, Fernando Sanchez, and Jordon Zadorozny. His blog is annoyingly white text in a jpeg format… so, head on over to his blog site to read it (I ain’t about to type it up).

REVIEW: Mankind & Kari Spohn @ Wandering Goat (Eugene, OR – 4/29/11)
On Friday, Eugene photographer Kari Spohn and Eugene “post-something” band Mankind hit the Wandering Goat with two very different artistic openings. Kari’s black & white photography was throughout the coffee shop… her opening starting at 5:30pm. I dig her work – very “beauty in the everyday” and nice use of lines in concrete and steel in my opinion.
Delightful bites of caprise bread slices and sounds from the espresso machine’s froth fuzz soon gave way to the post-rock / post-metal bombast from Mankind at 6pm…

Mankind is a great find for post-rock fans in Eugene. They played a fairly tight set of some fantastical heavy instrumental music that sucks you in. Mankind is James Madson on bass, Joe Harvey & John Hurd on guitars and Courtney Stubbert on drums. For fans of Explosions in the Sky, think a touch heavier. “Explosions in the Isis” perhaps. Definitely recommended for fans of Explosions, Isis, Mogwai, et cetera. And I’m glad Mankind are in Eugene. I look forward to seeing them play a show where they can stretch their legs – the Goat’s stage is a bit small!
And don’t worry… the sonic takeover of the art opening wasn’t intended as a clash. It was a compliment to the photography (Kari and Mankind are kindreds).

Breaking news as I was writing this review up… Barack Obama announced that a special force killed Osama bin Laden! Mission Accomplished (for real this time)! I’m not celebrating the death, but rather the justice.
Shara Worden on Prefuse73’s new album
I should change the name of this blog to something to do with Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond). 
She took some time off to have a baby, but now it seems like she’s popping up all over the indie-rock landscape.
This time, she lends her golden voice to the Prefuse 73 track “The Only Hand To Hold” from their just released album, The Only She Chapters. The song is available now as a FREE mp3 download over on their website.

Glen Phillips’ archived “Tornillo” album
Glen Phillips (the voice of Toad the Wet Sprocket) just let people know that he finally released from the archives the album Tornillo. It was recorded in 2003 and has some tunes that eventually made it onto one of my favorite albums of his – Winter Pays For Summer.
Tornillo is out now on Bandcamp for only $7 (or more – pay what you want) or streaming for free. I know I’ll be downloading it once I get home…
He also mentioned that Toad the Wet Sprocket is sending out an email later this week with a free download link to their first recorded studio work in years… a cover of Sam Phillips‘ “It Doesn’t Feel Like Christmas.”

Carissa’s Wierd – “Die”
News from SeattleShowGal’s blog…
When the story broke May 3, 2010 that Carissa’s Wierd were going to be doing a reunion show on July 9th and releasing a retrospective with Hardly Art, the blogosphere was a flutter. The original Carissa’s Weird crew that split and went on to be solo act Sara Cahoone and others formed Band of Horses were coming back and in righteous form! Today, Hardly art is being kind enough to share the track “Die” off the up and coming retrospective They’ll Only Miss You When You Leave: Songs 1996-2003, scheduled to be released on July 13, 2010. The strings swoon as the keys dance and vocals charm. Get it! Listen to it. Download it. Be excited for the upcoming show and release.
