Digital Noise Academy’s kickstarter reboot

26th Jun 12 (Tue) Leave a comment

Yikes! I haven’t blogged all month!  Keeping busy at work, not as many shows this month for me, and I suppose not much “new music” breaking in June.  Fiona Apple’s new album The Idler Wheel coming out today; so grab that!

Also, I posted a couple months ago about Digital Noise Academy’s Kickstarter.  The collaborative group is:

  • Ken Andrews (Failure, On, Year of the Rabbit, worked with Tool, A Perfect Circle, NIN, Tenacious D, Copeland, etc)
  • Sharky Laguana (Creeper Lagoon)
  • Charlotte Martin
  • Justin Meldal-Johnsen (NIN, Beck, Air, M83)
  • Fernando Sanchez (Lenka, Ben Jelen, Racheal Yamagata, Chris Cornell)
  • Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star, Sam Roberts).

The original Kickstarter had lofty goals, but didn’t meet them (too much, too short of a window)… well, they rebooted it and are almost there – needing only another $4k with 45 days to spare.  I think it’s going to be a rad album!

Check it out and help them out!

FINALLY… Digital Noise Academy – debut album {kickstarter}

2nd May 12 (Wed) 1 comment

So, Digital Noise Academy/DNA (formerly Los Angeles Digital Noise Academy/LADNA) has been teasing us with new album promises way back since the MySpace days.  The collaborative led by one of my favorite musicians Ken Andrews (Failure, On, Year of the Rabbit, worked with Tool, A Perfect Circle, NIN, Tenacious D, Copeland, etc) is what brings me to the table, but the other members are tops, too… Sharky Laguana (Creeper Lagoon), Charlotte Martin (Herself), Justin Meldal-Johnsen (NIN, Beck, Air, M83), Fernando Sanchez (Lenka, Ben Jelen, Racheal Yamagata, Chris Cornell), and Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star, Sam Roberts).

Well, now they officially have a kickstarter.  I think it’s a great project, and I sincerely hope it gets made.  Check out the first single they released two years ago (which will be on the album), then check out the Kickstarter pagerebooted link

They have already completed two songs “Melting Inside” and “Thursday Night Party.”  Both these songs are currently available for free download on their website www.digitalnoiseacademy.com.

On Wednesday, Glen Phillips (from Toad the Wet Sprocket) released a free download of a new song, “The Next Day.”  Go get it on his bandcamp site…

http://glenphillips.bandcamp.com/track/the-next-day-2

From the 12/13/11 show at Soho in Santa Barbara. Closest I will make it to a holiday song this year. More of an OWS support ditty with a seasonal reference in the chorus… Be happy, be well.

Also, rest in peace, Christopher Hitchens.  You were great.  God is Not Great.

My Brightest Diamond ‘All Things Will Unwind’ (Oct 18, 2011)

12th Jul 11 (Tue) Leave a comment

So, if I could have a blog solely dedicated to the music of Shara Worden/My Brightest Diamond, I would.  I ‘found’ her via her opening slot for Sufjan Stevens’ Avalanche tour (Indianapolis 2006?).  Her voice amazed me, and she has quickly become one of my favorite vocalists.  She has operatic voice training, a clever wit, charming lyrics, and an indie-rock DIY mentality.

Her third studio album under the My Brightest Diamond moniker* has been announced… All Things Will Unwind will be released October 18, 2011.

For those unfamiliar, MBD creates some fantastic orchestral indie pop.  She’s offering a FREE download of a song from the forthcoming album…

Free mp3 Download:
Reaching Through to the Other Side

All Things Will Unwind track list
01 We Added It Up
(Studio 360 live video)
02 Reaching Through to the Other Side
(MusicNow 2011 video)
03 In the Beginning
04 Escape Routes
05 Be Brave
06 She Does Not Brave the War
07 Ding Dang
08 There’s a Rat
09 High Low Middle
10 Everything Is in Line
11 I Have Never Loved Someone

*– She has a few MBD precursors under the band name “AwRy” (harder to find), plus a few remix EPs, several cover tunes on compilations, and several fantastic side-projects like Sarah Kirkland Snider’s Penelope, the spoken word Letters From Distant Cities, and the upcoming Kickstarter for her backing band yMusic’s debut album – Beautiful Mechanical.  All worth checking out as well.

Dave Douglas’ Brass Ecstasy & news from Camp Greenleaf

23rd Jun 11 (Thu) Leave a comment

News from trumpeter Dave Douglas’ label Greenleaf Music the other day.  All this from the GM mailing list…

Late last week, we transitioned to our new website that’s been in development for over a year. Come over for a visit to spend time with some great new features including faster load times, a new store with easier checkout, up-to-the minute news on all of our artists (present and past). And in the upcoming weeks, we will be rolling out a site optimized for mobile devices, a new app for the iPhone / iPad, and possibly what we’re most excited about, the Greenleaf Cloud–a streaming of our entire catalogue in a nifty player that you can access anywhere.

also, out now, the first in the Greenleaf Portable Series (GPS)…

Harkening back to the way jazz records used to be made, these are informal sessions that yield shorter album lengths but with the immediacy of the digital music age. Volume one in this digital-only series, Rare Metals, spotlights Brass Ecstasy, recording five new compositions and the first new released material since Spirit Moves, plus a smoking arrangement of the Billy Strayhorn classic, “Lush Life,” that sent chills through the folks that run the Village Vanguard.

And for a taste of the new music, this track is available for free download. We hope you enjoy it and choose to support the series by purchasing the full album–can’t beat the $5 price tag.

GPS Vol 2 with Ravi Coltrane, Vijay Iyer, Linda Oh, and Marcus Gilmore will follow late next month.

Yay!  Any day with news about new Dave Douglas music is a good day for me.

Digital Noise Academy (update)

24th May 11 (Tue) Leave a comment

Ken Andrews posted a new blog with an update about Digital Noise Academy, his online collaboration with Charlotte Martin, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Sharky Laguana, Tommy Walter, Fernando Sanchez, and Jordon Zadorozny.  His blog is annoyingly white text in a jpeg format… so, head on over to his blog site to read it (I ain’t about to type it up).

Digital Noise Academy (May 11, 2011)

There’s a new streaming song (“Thursday Night Party“) – the second and last free tune from the project.  Join the discussion about how to monetize the project; so it sees the light of day without being thieved.  The songs “Thursday Night Party” and “Melting Inside” can also be downloaded for free via links at http://www.digitalnoiseacademy.com/.

Shara Worden on Prefuse73’s new album

29th Apr 11 (Fri) Leave a comment

I should change the name of this blog to something to do with Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond).  She took some time off to have a baby, but now it seems like she’s popping up all over the indie-rock landscape.

This time, she lends her golden voice to the Prefuse 73 track “The Only Hand To Hold” from their just released album, The Only She Chapters.  The song is available now as a FREE mp3 download over on their website.

The album (mp3/wav/flac/CD/LP) is available to purchase at BLEEP.
