Wussy to embark on 2012 West Coast tour (needs help)

7th Feb 12 (Tue) Leave a comment

Cincinnati dusty indie rock quartet Wussy are going to hit the West Coast for the first time in June.  Their latest album, Strawberry, is EXCELLENT, and it is going to be available as a limited edition vinyl for Record Store Day 2012.  They’ve made a map for their tour in June, now they need our help…

We’ve just posted the itinerary for our first ever west coast tour in the events section here on FB. In case it wasn’t obvious, we do pretty much everything ourselves here in Wussyland and we need your help. We’ve never played most of these cities and whatever help you can give in finding appropriate venues and contacts we’d really appreciate it. In order to keep this a little more organized post your info in the event for the actual city we’re playing. We’re coming, we just need to figure out where!

Radiohead – West Coast U.S. Tour

14th Jan 12 (Sat) Leave a comment

Got my ticket for Radiohead at Key Arena at Seattle.  Anybody else have luck getting tickets?  If not, good luck on eBay, StubHub or other scalper sites.  The sale method took an even greater step to cut down on scalpers (no physical tickets, no print at home either).  Buyers have to show up with ID & credit card.  Might be interesting at the gates…

Outside of the two weekends at Coachella, here are their West Coast dates:

  • April 9 – Key Arena, Seattle, WA
  • April 11 – HP Pavilion, San Jose, CA
  • April 12 – Santa Barbara Bowl, Santa Barbara, CA

REVIEW: Reptet @ Luckey’s (Eugene, OR – 1/14/11)

17th Jan 11 (Mon) 1 comment

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

A rare nice, non-rainy evening in Eugene on Friday… how do you start a show? You get your gear and head outsideReptet did just that… wearing drums and horns, they hit the street right outside Luckey’s to get the crowd pumped as well as bring in some surprised passersby.  After their Reptet-ization of a Chamillionaire song, they shuffled and bounced back inside, bringing more people in after them than were originally were in the bar.  First song, first stroke of genius.

This was the first show of their West Coast CD Release tour (see dates below).  Their 4th studio album AT THE CABIN just came out, and after a couple spins… I’m totally digging it.  Great fun-romp of a jazz sextet.  A little bit of goofing around, a little bit of standard following mixed with standard setting, and a little bit of punk & experimental sensibilities with a solid rhythm section.  To me, this is what a jazz combo from (my) young generation should be like.  Plus I’m a sucker for brass & reed-based jazz…

Reptet is made up of Samantha Boshnack (trumpet & vox), Chris Credit (sax/clarinet/flute), Izaak Mills (sax/clarinet/flute & vox/fake phone calls), Nelson Bell (trombone/sousaphone), Tim Carey (acoustic & electric bass), and John Ewing (drums & vox).  They played about 70 minutes, and hit a few unidentified songs, but here are the ones I know they played…

Setlist:

  • Chamillionaire on the street
  • Zeppo
  • Snow Leopard x 3
  • unknown
  • Skcorcissalc
  • Something Like What.
  • brains
  • Fish Market

They ended about 15 minutes ’til midnight, and while I wanted to stick around for Eugene-based jazz combo Eleven Eyes, I had to call it a night.  Thanks for making Eugene a part of your CD release tour, Reptet!  See you again soon!

Erin McKeown Anniversary tour / Earshot Jazz 2010

Two unrelated PacNW tour updates

Erin McKeown is hitting the West Coast on her upcoming Distillation Anniversary Tour and the annual Earshot Jazz Fest in Seattle just put out its 2010 program…

  • NOV 8 Triple Door Seattle, WA
  • NOV 11 Largo at the Coronet Los Angeles, CA
  • NOV 14 Cafe DuNord San Francisco, CA

The Earshot Jazz Festival’s official program is over at: http://earshot.org/Publication/pub/10october.pdf.  Or you can check out just the schedule over at http://earshot.org/Festival/schedule.html.  Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, Vagabond Opera, Toshi Reagon, Dave Peck, Ornette Coleman (film), Brian Blade, Ziggurat Quartet (mulltiple shows), DJ Spooky, Eugene Chadbourne, and more… sounds like a great three week line-up.

I hope to hit Erin’s Portland (Oregon) show… I saw her this past spring, and she puts on a great show.  Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it to any of the Earshot shows this time.  Damn the 5-6 hour drive.  Now, if they can get John Zorn back in 2011… I’m there!

Derek Webb in Portland (4/27)

4th Mar 10 (Thu) Leave a comment

4/28 update… my review with photos is here:
https://jazzsick.wordpress.com/2010/04/28/webb-knapp-portland/

Yay! Derek Webb is bringing his tour with Jennifer Knapp through my neck of the woods.  They’re playing the Aladdin Theater on April 27, 2010.  It’s not posted on the Aladdin site, but it is listed over on Derek’s tour page.  Tickets on sale later in March.

They’re also hitting San Diego and Seattle… maybe they can swing a Eugene date on the way up?  I’m crossing my fingers, but if no Eugene show, I’ll be at Portland for sure.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen him… I’m totally looking forward to it.

Sonny Rollins on Tour

16th Jan 10 (Sat) Leave a comment

Jazz LEGEND Sonny Rollins is hitting the road for a short midwest/west coast tour this spring…

http://www.sonnyrollins.com/

The Seattle show being on a Monday makes it problematic for me.  I’ll see what I can do.  Anyway, if he’s fortuitously swinging by your neck of the woods, go!
