Works Progress Administration (CD & Tour)

As previously reported, Glen Phillips (of Toad the Wet Sprocket) and members of Nickelcreek have a new album coming out in 2009. September 15th, to be exact. Works Progress Administration is the name of the band, and it is made up of a bunch of folky heavyweights…
WPA is:
- Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) – vocals, guitar
- Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek, Fiction Family) – guitar, vocals
- Luke Bulla (Jerry Douglas Band, Ricky Skaggs) – fiddle, vocals, guitar
- Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek) – fiddle, vocals
- Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) – piano, organ
- Greg Leisz (Joni Mitchell, Wilco, Sheryl Crow, Beck) – pedal steel
- Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Randy Newman) – drums
- Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Cracker) – bass
Their tourdates have also run the gauntlet that is my September ’09 musicalendar and made it’s way into the lovely WOW Hall in Eugene, OR, on Sunday, September 27th. It’ll only be the “quartet” version of WPA, but I’m not complaining. That’s gotta have at least Glen & Sean (Watkins).

Fiona Apple & Múm
Two unrelated music news items worthy of note…

Fiona Apple is back in the studio for the first time in three years. As SPIN reports, Fiona will contribute two new recordings to The Best Is Yet to Come, a forthcoming compilation honoring Cy Coleman, a composer whose most famous material was performed by Frank Sinatra. On the collection, Apple performs Coleman’s “Why Try to Change Me Now” and “I Walk a Little Faster,” which was popularized by Tony Bennett. Patty Griffin, Nikka Costa, Jill Sobule, and Missy Higgins are among the other artists who honor Coleman’s musical legacy on the album. No release date set, from what I can tell.
Here’s an audio YouTube of Fiona’s “Why Try to Change Me Now”…

Icelandic band Múm (pronounced “moom”) is releasing another album and is touring the U.S. I received my ticket to the Portland show (Nov 4th) in the mail today. I figured it was related to an album, but hadn’t heard that until today (over on the BrooklynVegan blog). Musically, Múm are akin to Sigur Rós meets Frog Pocket. And for those not in the know about Frog Pocket… well, the prior sentence meant that Múm are like a glitchy-electronic Sigur Rós.
Honestly, I hadn’t looked, but I now find out that Múm’s new album (Sing Along to Songs You Don’t Know) is due out in August 2009, but it has already been leaked. Oh, internets, when you you ever learn that in order for the arts to continue and flourish, you should pay for it!
Anyway, Múm’s 2009 tour dates are as follows:

# múm DJ set
Porcupine Tree / Larry David & Woody Allen

UK progrockers Porcupine Tree have a new album coming out in September, and it now has a name: The Incident. It’s out September 21st on Roadrunner Records in the United States. It’ll be a double-album: first CD being the (cough) 55-minute title track. The 2nd CD being an EP-lengthed featuring these four songs: “Flicker,” “Bonnie The Cat,” “Black Dahlia,” and “Remember Me Lover.”

My fandom of Steven Wilson’s songwriting (examples: Stupid Dream & Lightbulb Sun) will probably lead me to gravitate to the 2nd CD, but we shall see. Their counterpart in the prog world, Dream Theater, can’t write their way out of a wet paper bag (when it comes to a “song”)… so at least Steven tends to do that every once in a while…

As previously reported, Porcupine Tree hits the road with King’s X and That1Guy this fall (two favorite artists of mine). I’ll be at the That1Guy-opened show in Portland, OR.

Larry David is a busy man. As previously reported, the 7th season of Curb Your Enthusiasm is underway (and will host all major members of the Seinfeld cast). Larry’s feature movie from writer/director Woody Allen is hitting the streets this June/July. Here’s a trailer for Whatever Works:
dredg, radiohead, dave douglas, and a holy eff bailout
dredg‘s new album, The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion, is gonna be good great. Their Portland show in early April was TOPS! I like “I Don’t Know” better as a lead off, but regardless of what I think, here’s the video for “Information“…

Radiohead are hitting the studio again to follow-up the revolutionary pay-what-you-want album from 2007, In Rainbows. Colin said, “it was really good. It was really noisy and chaotic and really fun…. We’re at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re looking at all the bits and thinking, what next?” Read more on the BBC. I’d post a version of Radiohead’s “Just” done up in Legos, alas it’s been long removed due to terms of service blah blah blah.

Trumpter Dave Douglas has a new album coming out with his Spirit Moves quartet. More info over at Greenleaf Music.

Toronto instrumental rockers Holy Fuck have benefited from the auto bailout. I’d like to think of my tax dollars going directly to them being able to make album #3; so all-in-all, I’m happy about seeing their music as part of a Chrysler commercial:

Geo Album #6
Mr. George Hrab has announced the name for his upcoming 6th studio album… Trebuchet. Take a glimpse at possibly a teaser for the artwork (below). I say possibly, as this e-postcard of sorts is the first inkling of images / names for the album.

Ellery, Peter Mulvey, My Brightest Diamond
A trio of new music news…

Cincinnati lush-pop/folk duo Ellery is hitting the studio soon with Malcolm Burn (http://www.malcolmburn.com). Malcolm is a Grammy-winning producer who has worked with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Kaki King, Rachel Yamagata, Sarah McLachlan, Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams, and more. This will be their follow-up to the fantastic debut, Lying Awake from 2007. They’ve got a special “help them make a record” thing going on at ellerystimulus.com. I’ve plunked down my cash… wish I got to see them as often as when I lived in Cincinnati, but regardless I’m glad they’re hitting the studio again.

Milwaukee/Boston singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey is putting the finishing touches on his next album, Letters from a Flying Machine. Of the glut of singer-songwriters, Peter has a place in my heart (and ears). He’s entertaining, intriguing, great storyteller, and a great sense of humor. If you’ve never heard of him… do yourself a favor, and hear of him… http://myspace.com/petermulvey

The third installment of My Brightest Diamond‘s A Thousand Shark Remixes is hitting iTunes on Tuesday, March 31st. It’s remixed by Roberto C. Lange. Remix EP #1 (by Alfred Brown) and #2 (by Son Lux) were pretty tasty. EP #4 (by DM Stith) should be out in a few months, and all four will be made available on a physical CD with likely some tasty packaging. Maybe vinyl, too… but that’s just me throwing a marble in the rumor mill.
Ani DiFranco’s iTunes Originals session
Ani DiFranco unexpectedly showed up in my weekly iTunes email this morning. I love the iTunes Originals series… it’s a good mix of interviews, album tracks, and in-studio iTunes exclusives. Well, Ani’s got one out as of today (11/18/08).

$9.99 for 24 tracks (includes interviews). Just do a search for “Ani DiFranco iTunes originals” in… um… iTunes… duh! I’d post a direct link, but apparently those are local drive-specific.

Mitch Hedberg – Do You Believe in Gosh?
I feel fortunate enough to have seen Mitch Hedberg several times in SW Ohio & N.Kentucky before his untimely death (and even have the original/indie/cartoon drawing cover Strategic Grill Locations CD).
While his death came young [age 37], it wasn’t all that surprising. Drugs took their toll on his life, but it might be said that drugs gave him the courage to even get up on stage. Regardless of the ills or benefits drugs had on Mitch, his comedy is missed. He was called the surfer/stoner Steven Wright. I think that short-changed his uniqueness.

Apparently, two months prior to his death he recorded material that would become his last album. Do You Believe in Gosh? comes out September 9th:

Extreme… and a Naked Video
Double-packed post… unrelated topics (Extreme & nakedness)… what else is new? For nakedness, skip to the bottom…
First off… yes, I like Extreme. The band from the early 90s. They were awesome. No regrets. They were so much artier than what aired on the radio. I saw them in 1995 (Bogart’s in Cincinnati), and it was one of my favorite shows… EVER. They broke up later that year (or in early 1996).
Anyway, they’re back together. New album, new tour. I’ll be flying to Cincinnati (on SkyMiles) to see them at the Union Center Blvd Bash on Sunday, August 10th… as my bro lives, like, 2 miles from there. They just put out a press release for their upcoming album…
(June 9, 2008 ) New York, NY – This summer, EXTREME will release Saudades de Rock (pronounced “sow-dodge“), their first studio album in thirteen years which will coincide with their first world tour in over twelve years. Saudades de Rock will be released on August 12th on Open E Records and distributed by Fontana.
The iconic rock foursome – vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger and new drummer Kevin Figueiredo – recorded their fifth studio offering at NRG Studios in Los Angeles with Bettencourt at the helm as producer and mixer. Saudades de Rock boasts 13 tracks, including the infectious roar of “Star,” the groove-laden, swagger of “King”, a raw funk rock anthem called “Learn To Love”, and the expressive ballad “Ghost.”
“‘Saudades’ was always a beautiful word to me,” Bettencourt explains about the Portuguese album moniker. “It expresses a longing; an underlying sadness for something or someone that’s been missing in your life, and never quite sure if it will ever return. In this case, for us, it’s Rock and Roll. Saudades de Rock.”
Gary Cherone adds, “I like how it expresses that longing we’ve been feeling to play for our fans and be together again.”
The multi-platinum, Boston-bred band’s 2008 ‘TAKE US ALIVE’ world tour gets underway on July 29th at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and will be anchored by a hometown gig two days later at the Bank of America Pavilion. In advance of the tour, Extreme will be a co-headliner on July 11th at the five day Rocklahoma Festival in Pryor, OK.
