REVIEW: That 1 Guy & Boy Eats Drum Machine @ WOW Hall (Eugene, OR – 5/15/10)

16th May 10 (Sun) 4 comments

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

I’ve been a fan of That 1 Guy and the Magic Pipe since seeing him a dank club in Cincinnati opening for Drums & Tuba in the early 2000s.  He’s toured incessantly throughout the decade, hitting some major festivals and being a supporting act for some big bands.  It’s been nice to see his fanbase grow, and at many times I didn’t think his music was growing all that much.  Well, he proves us wrong with his fourth record, Packs a Wallop.  He seems to have found a nice balance between the experimentation and the groove.  The lyrical silliness is still there, but that’s part of the charm…

The opener was Portland’s Boy Eats Drum Machine.  Boy Eats Drum Machine is a one man band made up of Jon Ragel and his musical toys. I was only familiar with the video for “Hoop + Wire” (see below).  It’s a clever video, but I didn’t think it gave any insight into his live set.  Well, the Eugene crowd was blown away, to say the least.   He put out an incredibly danceable mix of record spinning, drum machine, live drums, saxophone and vocals.  He has a great voice, passion, and energy.

Boy Eats Drum Machine “Hoop + Wire

Well, no, his live set wasn’t stop-motion animation, but it was as full of energy and fun as the video shows.  Eugene ate Boy Eats Drum Machine.  Portland, you can’t have him back!!

After only a short break, Mike Silverman aka That 1 Guy joined the Magic Pipe on stage for almost two and a half hours of lights, smoke, lasers, and all around jam-worthy tom-foolery…

Mr. Guy played almost non-stop, busting through his catalogue… playing many tunes from his latest album…

Setlist: almost 2 1/2 hours

  • Modern Man
  • Packs a Wallop
  • Buttmachine (with extended jam)
  • How’s Bout Them Holes In The Moon (Butter Side Down)
  • Heaven or Heck
  • Jam
  • Stones Throw
  • Oranges
  • Bananas
  • Laser Beans
  • Step Into Striped Light
  • Mustaches
  • Jam
  • Rainbow
  • Dig
  • One
  • “Magic Show”
  • Credit Card Jam
  • Lounge Outtro
  • Encore: Weasel Potpie
  • The Moon is Disgusting
  • Word Up (Cameo cover)
  • Lounge Outtro

Of the frequent stops through Eugene, this one seemed to be the most action packed.  He had full reign to play a longer set, and his light show has definitely stepped up a notch (I did miss the Mustaches & Laser Beams tour; so maybe this is just a continuation).  He pulled out the magic saw and magic boot near the end of the show.  He also treated the crowd to his magic card tricks and laser bows.  Ever the showman, he was soaking wet by the end of the night, yet still full of energy…

REVIEW: Porcupine Tree w/ That1Guy @ Roseland (Portland, OR – 9/16/09)

17th Sep 09 (Thu) 12 comments

Rarely do two bands you like happen to tour together.  Porcupine Tree is touring with King’s X on this U.S. Leg… well… ok, starting in a week in Ohio.  This West Coast leg, though gets That1Guy (another musician I like a lot).  I’m bummed I’m missing a KXC/PT show, but That1Guy is a fun live act as well.

I guess I’ll have to get used to the Roseland, as I imagine I’ll be seeing more and more shows here over the years.  It’s an “OK” venue… a basic stand-y rock club.  They do have a nice food menu, though… and I got as Zappa veggie dog (I heart the PacNW).  The band had a ban on cameras, outside of the officially selected photographer for the Incident tour blog; so no photos from me this time.

That1Guy played a short set.  Pretty much the same set as the last time I saw him in Feb, but just cut short. I was kind of bummed that he didn’t play “Buttmachine” or “Mustaches.”  Maybe he was trying to be “more serious” for the prog fans.  I don’t know.  I think “Buttmachine” is one of his catchiest songs, regardless of its ridiculous lyrics.  Watch the video here.  Overall his set & jams were a bit redundant / repetitive, but he’s still fun to watch.

Setlist: about 40 mins

  • Intro Jam
  • Jigsaw
  • Weasel Potpie leading into Instrumental Jam
  • Heaven or Heck
  • Dig (with the magic boot)
  • Outro Jam (T1G’s credit card jam with snippets of “Smoke on the Water”)

That1Guy’s 2007 album, The Moon is Disgusting, aged well.  I’m still digging it a bunch, and wish he would have played more off of it outside of “Jigsaw” and “Dig.”  You can listen to samples of the album HERE.

Next up, Porcupine Tree, whose new album, The Incident, arrived to my earbuds last weekend (thanks to Demonoid) but also hit my hands in a the lush limited edition on Tuesday.  Wow… it’s freakin’ excellent.  Great packaging in the deluxe edition.  I think the limited edition is sold out, but the standard CD is available worldwide now.

Porcupine Tree hit the stage around 9:15 and played a first set entirely made up of The Incident‘s 1st disc.  They didn’t stray from the album in scope or sound.  It was very great being in the same room as Steven again.  He’s truly a great musician and songwriter, which is a hard moniker to assign to a progressive rock musician (most of them can’t write a song to save their lives).  Their set…

Setlist:

  • The Incident (in its entirety)
    I – Occam’s Razor
    II – The Blind House
    III – Great Expectations
    IV – Kneel and Disconnect
    V – Drawing the Line
    VI – The Incident
    VII – Your Unpleasant Family
VIII – The Yellow Windows of the Evening Train
    IX – Time Flies
X – Degree Zero of Liberty
    XI – Octane Twisted
    XII – The Séance
    XIII – Circle of Manias
XIV – I Drive the Hearse
    2nd Set
  • The Start of Something Beautiful
  • Buying New Soul
  • Anesthetize Part 2
  • Lazarus
  • Strip the Soul
  • .3
  • Bonnie the Cat
  • Encore: Way Out of Here
  • Trains

Great show for their fantastic new album.  They played right around 2 hours total.  The Incident is easily the best album they’ve done since In Absentia, IMO.  This was only the 2nd show of their tour, and it didn’t really show.  I mean, they were on top of their game.  Steven mentioned that they were a little nervous at the Seattle show the day prior.  Somehow I’m skeptical of that.  They probably roll out of bed and could play these songs blindfolded. :)

Porcupine Tree / Larry David & Woody Allen

13th Jun 09 (Sat) 2 comments

UK progrockers Porcupine Tree have a new album coming out in September, and it now has a name: The Incident.  It’s out September 21st on Roadrunner Records in the United States.  It’ll be a double-album: first CD being the (cough) 55-minute title track.  The 2nd CD being an EP-lengthed featuring these four songs: “Flicker,” “Bonnie The Cat,” “Black Dahlia,” and “Remember Me Lover.”

My fandom of Steven Wilson’s songwriting (examples: Stupid Dream & Lightbulb Sun) will probably lead me to gravitate to the 2nd CD, but we shall see.  Their counterpart in the prog world, Dream Theater, can’t write their way out of a wet paper bag (when it comes to a “song”)… so at least Steven tends to do that every once in a while…

As previously reported, Porcupine Tree hits the road with King’s X and That1Guy this fall (two favorite artists of mine).  I’ll be at the That1Guy-opened show in Portland, OR.

Larry David is a busy man.  As previously reported, the 7th season of Curb Your Enthusiasm is underway (and will host all major members of the Seinfeld cast).  Larry’s feature movie from writer/director Woody Allen is hitting the streets this June/July.  Here’s a trailer for Whatever Works:

Porcupine Tree, King’s X, and That 1 Guy walk into a bar…

Porcupine Tree is working on a new album, due out in September on Roadrunner Records (in the U.S.).   For their upcoming North American tour in support of its new album, the following dates have been confirmed (more to follow):

Tue 15 Sep SEATTLE, WA MOORE THEATER [opener: That1Guy]
Wed 16 Sep PORTLAND, OR ROSELAND [opener: That 1 Guy]
Fri 18 Sep SAN FRANCISCO WARFIELD [opener: That 1 Guy]
Sat 19 Sep LOS ANGELES CLUB NOKIA [opener: Big Elf]
Mon 21 Sep CLEVELAND, OH HOUSE OF BLUES [opener: King’s X]
Tue 22 Sep CHICAGO, IL VIC THEATER [opener: King’s X]
Thu 24 Sep NY, NY TERMINAL 5 [opener: King’s X]
Sat 26 Sep PHILLY ELECTRIC FACTORY [opener: King’s X]
Sun 27 Sep BOSTON, MA HOUSE OF BLUES [opener: King’s X]
Tue 29 Sep MONTREAL METROPOLIS [opener: King’s X]
Wed 30 Sep TORONTO QUEEN ELIZABETH THEATRE [opener: King’s X]

General onsale date is April 17th for all dates, except Boston/Chicago (4/18) and San Fran (4/19).  If you’re a PT “ROABP” fanclub member, you can get tickets earlier (4/10)… but most are probably GA venues anyway… so… yeah… you do the math.

I’d kind of hope to see the PT / KX bill, but I guess I’ll settle for PT/T1G.  And who the heck is Big Elf?

REVIEW: That1Guy @ WOW Hall (Eugene, OR – – 2/11/09)

12th Feb 09 (Thu) 2 comments

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

Well, this was my 5th time seeing That1Guy and the Magic Pipe.  He is a truly mesmerizing performer… the inclusion of the Magic Saw and Magic Boot are also great, but the true show is seeing Mr. 1Guy put a crazy go nuts university seminar on the Magic Pipe.

The opener was Seattle’s Flowmotion.  I only caught their last 3-4 songs, but I liked them.  Kinda of a more rock style jam band.  The best part for me was their drummer and drummer/ percussionist combo.  Two of the 3-4 songs I saw had some cool extended dual drum solos.

T1G came on right around 9:30.  He seemed to play a very similar setlist to the time I saw him a year and a half ago at John Henry’s, but much more energetic… having a pretty packed house at a bigger venue on a Wednesday definitely didn’t hurt the energy. :)

Setlist:

  • Forgotten Whales leading into Instrumental Intro Jam
  • Jigsaw
  • Weasel Potpie leading into Instrumental Jam
  • the one with “heaven or heck” in the lyrics
  • Dig (with the magic boot)
  • Buttmachine (extended)
  • Instrumental Jam
  • Bananas
  • Somewhere Over the Rainbow(with the magic saw)
  • One(with card tricks)
  • Jam Session with Flowmotion drummers (T1G’s credit card jam)

Great show… I left at about the 90 minute point (it’s been a long week for me so far).  If I had to wager a guess, I bet he played “Mash” and/or “The Moon is Disgusting” and/or “Birds” as encores… but that’s only a guess.

And now for some news from That1Guy…

He’s re-issued his first album… the one before Songs in the Key of Beotch called Let’s Hear That1Guy (click pic to find out more):

Ryan Seacrest says “buttmachine” and “that 1 guy”… yes, you read that correctly… Ryan… Seacrest.

Crazy, butt good exposure for a longtime personal favorite artist… http://www.that1guy.com/

The two Butt Machine videos:

I hear “Butt Machine” is the “new RickRoll” (blog link)… it’s also featured on the new The Weeds soundtrack (Showtime show).

REVIEW: That1Guy & Buckethead @ McDonald Theatre (Eugene, OR – – 3/22/08)

23rd Mar 08 (Sun) 5 comments

’twas an oddrocker double bill yesterday… That1Guy and Buckethead.

This was my fourth time seeing Mr. 1Guy. My review of his show last fall is here. That1Guy started right after 9pm and played for just about an hour. He started out with the haunting strings of “Forgotten Whales” (a song that actually made it on our wedding CDs for the dinner… teehee). He played a lot of instrumental tracks on the magic pipe (a big metal pipe jacked up on electricity), but he also did “Buttmachine,” “Weasel Pot Pie,” and “The Moon is Disgusting.” I kinda wish he would’a done “One,” alas he didn’t. He pulled out the magic boot (a cowboy boot jacked up on electricity)… it’s got a nice tabla-like sound. He also pulled out the magic saw (a large saw jacked up on electricity) and played “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” A couple times in his set he went to a very repetitive place, alas, still an overall great show from That1Guy. Check him out sometime if he comes to your town… todays show was a solid 4.5 stars.

Check out some videos of That1Guy (click the pictures)…

Live in Oz:

Buttmachine:

Buckethead went on at 10:30pm. This was my third time seeing him, and my wife’s first time. I was bummed with no live band backing him. He played along to drum & bass & ’lectronic DAT tracks… that were TOO LOUD. It was too hard to hear him play his guitar half the time. Plus the live band atmosphere is much better. Anyway, he started out with “Jump Man/Night of the Slunk”… played a bunch of other stuff… also played “Stick Pit”… we had to leave 45 minutes in. The volume levels were PAINFUL (and we had earplugs in)… but not so much the guitar volume levels, mainly the backing tracks… ::sigh:: Guitars: 4.5 stars… everything else: 2 stars… so much so that it was unenjoyable past 45 minutes. I totally missed the potential for his patented nun-chuk robot dancing.

I hope to see him again soon (July in Dayton with my brother, maybe)… I hope he has his band back with him.

Three blogs within 24 hours… oy, not a good sign.

Anyway, I’m exicted about two more shows coming up (I love living in a cool college town)…

NYC trumpeter Peter Evans is playing at Cozmic Pizza on Monday, Feb 4th. He’s adventurous, he’s played with John Zorn in the past (yay), and his band projects (Mostly Other People Do the Killing and Spärks) sound cool, too.

And then… That1Guy and Buckethead on the same bill (Eugene’s McDonald Theatre on Saturday, March 22nd). Cool. It’s the Saturday after finals… and my wife says she’s up for the challenge (she likes That1Guy enough, but has only really been “confronted” by Buckethead’s calmer stuff… as it’s good for massages and our weddings CDs, but not what he really does “in concert,” per se). :-)

REVIEW: That 1 Guy and Grynch @ John Henry’s (Eugene, OR – – 9/18/07)

22nd Sep 07 (Sat) 2 comments

Well, I think I’ll start posting concerts reviews here… as my “other outlet” is now not available to me (probably for the best).

On Tuesday night, I had the great opportunity to catch one of my favorite one-man musical freak-shows… That 1 Guy (http://www.that1guy.com/). I’d seen him twice before at the Mad Frog in Cincinnati, Ohio. I moved across country for school with my wife and puppy, and what do you know? T1G was playing here less than 2 weeks after we arrived. Yay!

Anyway, I started the evening with a fantastic meal (gardenburger w/ bleu) and beer choice (a Brother Thelonious Belgian-style ale) at the Eugene City Brew Pub. I walked around the corner to John Henry’s for the early show (it started at 7:30pm). I, luckily, got to catch most of the opening set by local metal band Grynch. They seemed to me to be a good combination of what I like in the Deftones and Fear Factory. They were also fairly tight on stage, and had a very professional sound. A welcome surprise to what you usually end up with local openers.

That1Guy came on around 8:30 perhaps? I don’t know… but it was good to see him set-up the pipe (how does he get it through customs when doing his Aussie gigs?). For those of you who aren’t familiar with That1Guy… well, he plays what most would consider to be plumbing (see picture below). Yet I’ve come to the realization after three shows and many spins of his CDs that he’s not even close to being a novelty act. He makes such well-conceived rhythms and melodies from his triggered-up & strung-up pipe, kick drums, magic saw, and tabla-stylized cowboy boot. His lyrics are usually plays on words and rhyme-y nonsense, but the main draw is his ferocity and skill in wielding that magic pipe to do his bidding. It’s a drum machine and stringed-instrument all in one. Truly a sight to see…

He played songs from his two albums (Songs in the Key of Beotch and the new The Moon is Disgusting)… Bananas, Oranges, the Moon is Disgusting, Buttmachine, Birds, Weasel Potpie… et cetera. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and the crowd seemed uber-into-it as well.
