Sufjan Stevens & Celldweller news

12th Aug 09 (Wed) 1 comment

So, I’d have posted about this sooner (Monday), but I’m less enthused about it, as Sufjan Stevens is not making his way out of the East & Midwest… this were one of those times, I wish I lived in Cincinnati, as I’d hit 2-3 of these shows…

Oh, but wait, there’s a Portland date!!!

Damn… Portland, Maine… not Oregon… :(

So, I guess some Sufjan activity is better than no Sufjan activity.  Also, over on blackbookmag, they received a pre-release copy of Sufjan’s The BQE CD/DVD package…

It’s out on October 20th.  It’s not available for pre-order… yet…

So, the other news…

Information on Celldweller‘s next album, Wish Upon a Blackstar, is being leaked purposefully by Klayton himself.  Here’s the album cover for Chapter 1

Over on Klayton’s blog, you can listen to a streaming sample of “Hit Me.”  I like the cover.  It kinda of reminds me of this, though…

REVIEW: The Melvins @ John Henry’s (Eugene, OR – 8/9/09)

10th Aug 09 (Mon) 5 comments

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

I hear that King Buzzo has three dogs.
I bet he walks them really slow.

So, The Melvins have been around for… ever.  First album in 1986, but I didn’t get turned onto them until Melvins’ guitarist King Buzzo joined Mike Patton’s avant-noise metal supergroup Fantômas on the 1999 debut (along with Mr Bungle’s Trevor Dunn & Slayer’s Dave Lombardo).  I saw The Melvins in 2003 play with Skeleton Key & Mike Patton’s Tomahawk in Columbus, Ohio (Tomahawk’s Mit Gas tour).  I found a new respect for a mainstay on Patton’s Ipecac Recordings… The Melvins are a major force in heavy music.

Some history… they’re from Seattle and were considered an early founder of grunge (Kurt Cobain listed them as a major influence).  The Melvins have since moved into what could be best called “sludge metal“… which spurred Earth, and subsequently Sunn O))), in the drone & doom metal sub-genres.  All that to say, The Melvins have been around for a long time and have been an artistic force in music.

I haven’t had a solid chance of seeing them in 6 years.  They swung through Eugene last year, but I was out of town.  Last time, they played a bigger venue (WOW Hall), but this time, they played two full sets (with no opener)… so I’ll take it. :)  This was only their 2nd date of their 2009 U.S. Summer tour (see dates at the bottom), but they were pretty tight regardless.

They took the stage right at 7:30 and played six songs as a duo, just Buzz Osborne on guitars and Dale Crover on drums.  They were then joined by Jarred Warren on bass and Coady Willis on a 2nd set of drums.  Their first set started with more of the grunge/punk but had plenty of the sludge to go around.  It was a powerful 40-45 minute set.

They came back on 20 minutes later and belted out another 50 minute set without stopping.  “Hooch” was the highlight for me, but it was an amazing show all around.  No banter, barely stopping to tune… just a full force, heavy wave of music.

Setlist:

  • 1st set ~ Dale drum intro -> Ballad of Dwight Fry [Alice Cooper cover]
  • It’s Shoved
  • Let Me Roll It [McCartney cover]
  • Suicide in Progress
  • Oven
  • Black Bock
  • Let God Be Your Gardener
  • Pigs of the Roman Empire [Jared & Coady join]
  • The Talking Horse
  • The Bloated Pope
  • Dog Island
  • Dies Iraea
  • 2nd set ~ Dies Iraea (cont’d)
  • Billy Fish
  • Mr. DNA [Devo cover]
  • Anaconda
  • Zodiac
  • The Kicking Machine
  • Civilized Drums
  • Blood Witch
  • Hooch
  • Smiling Cobra
  • With Teeth
  • Night Goat
  • The Bit
*- from Buzzo’s setlist, corrections by Ryan (Idlehanz)

Overall… bloody brilliant.  I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it, and I don’t know half of their songs… :)  I’m definitely seeing them anytime they come through town.  A great band with 2 great sets!!

Their latest CD, 2008’s Nude With Boots, is great.  And the concept behind their upcoming CD, Chicken Switch, is intriguing.  It’s a remix album, but not a normal remix album.  Each song is a remix of an entire Melvins’ album (boiled into one song).  Some of the remixers included are Matmos, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, Eye Yamatsuka, and Merzbow (Masami Akita).  It’s out on September 29th on Ipecac.  Read more over at themelvins.net.  I’m looking forward to it…

Blue Moon Orange Sherbet Float

9th Aug 09 (Sun) 3 comments

Directly related to this Oakshire Overcast espresso gelato float post, I tried a new concoction… and it was delicious… behold, Blue Moon Orange Sherbet float

3-4 scoops of orange sherbet, one bottle of Blue Moon Belgian-style wheat ale, and enjoy!  While I haven’t tried it yet, I bet it’d also work well with either naked Coconut Bliss or their new pineapple-coconut “Vanilla Island” flavor…

Mike Bragg :: Pulled from the Ground

7th Aug 09 (Fri) 2 comments

Yesterday, I went up with some friends (including the featured artist) to see the opening of Mike Bragg‘s Pulled from the Ground at OGLE in Portland.  Fun times, too much food, great art, and voodoo donuts were had by all.  If you’re up in Portland within the next two months, go check it out.  It is set up with a great view from the street, too…

MIKE BRAGG
Pulled from the Ground

The performance piece / video is located at:
Mike Bragg’s Video Archive

Pulled from the Ground is a series comprised of a multi-channel video installation, a single channel video, photographs, drawings and a sound collage. Its foundation imagery centers on a collection of roots and a man’s obsession with them. The symbolization of the roots is seen throughout: they are an anchor of stability, yet at the same time, a literal reminder of the tangling snare of obsessiveness. Pulled from the Ground documents a struggle for stability against the constant flux of existence. The perception of safety and comfort derived from man’s organization and compulsory system of stability are precarious when viewed from within an exaggerated environment.

The elements of this series are designed to operate both autonomously and in conjunction with one another. The main element of the installation is the substantial, obsessive collection of roots. Displayed within the existing space or within a constructed set, the jars of roots are combined with drawings, photographs, videos and sounds to create an overwhelming, claustrophobic effect. In addition to the installation videos, there is a single channel video providing an experimental narrative echoing the themes explored in the installation.

Pulled from the Ground is adaptable to a variety of spaces. The project can be assembled as a full installation, a site specific modified version or as a single channel projection. The full installation includes three monitors situated in a room cluttered with root filled jars. The monitors loop images of pulsating and turning roots synchronized to a cacophony of sounds ranging from deep breathing to frantic mumblings. Almost every space is covered with worn photographs, tattered drawings and jars filled with roots. Other items contribute to the obsessive collection, such as microphones positioned to “capture the sounds of the roots” and a reel-to-reel recorder. A fourth monitor is tethered to the space via an extension cord, distanced somewhat from the cluttered collection and displaying an experimental narrative that documents the themes’ progression.

And unrelated, but also dark & arty (ok, maybe Anti-Sweden could use Mike Bragg’s accompanying music to sell jeans, too)… drone metal titans Sunn O))) are now being used to sell Anti-Sweden jeans in Norway:

McKay, Porcupine Tree, Mulvey & Bazan news

6th Aug 09 (Thu) Leave a comment

Music news that I care about seems to be hitting often lately…

Nellie McKay‘s album that was supposed to be outlast fall,” will finally be out “this fall.”  No album name, but we at least have a street date – October 13th.  There’s not much more content over at the Direct Current Music website; so I hope they are right on this one… .COM, .NET, and .ORG have failed to provide any corroboration.  I hope “this fall” doesn’t turn into “next fall“… yet again.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Porcupine Tree just put their newest one, The Incident (due out 9/15 in the U.S.), up for pre-order.  Much like Steven Wilson’s Insurgentes, this one has a deluxe edition that would make the Pope curse.  It looks freakin’ gorgeous (and huge)…

On the pre-order page there’s a video of PT frontman Steven Wilson talking about what’s to be included.  Oh, it’s a’spensive, but it makes sense if you’ve ever read this “1,000 True Fans” article by Kevin Kelly.  Not to say that only the “true fans” will buy it, but, well… anyway, the article is a good read…

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

One of my favorite singer-songwriters Peter Mulvey is coming through the PacNW in November.  One Portland date that I may try to make, and one Eugene date that I will make.  He’s also got a new one coming out (in September on Signature Sounds).  It’s called Letters from a Flying Machine

Works Progress Administration (CD & Tour)

5th Aug 09 (Wed) Leave a comment

As previously reported, Glen Phillips (of Toad the Wet Sprocket) and members of Nickelcreek have a new album coming out in 2009.  September 15th, to be exact.  Works Progress Administration is the name of the band, and it is made up of a bunch of folky heavyweights…

WPA is:

  • Greg Leisz (Joni Mitchell, Wilco, Sheryl Crow, Beck) – pedal steel
  • Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Randy Newman) – drums

Their tourdates have also run the gauntlet that is my September ’09 musicalendar and made it’s way into the lovely WOW Hall in Eugene, OR, on Sunday, September 27th.  It’ll only be the “quartet” version of WPA, but I’m not complaining.  That’s gotta have at least Glen & Sean (Watkins).

“Hurt”

4th Aug 09 (Tue) Leave a comment

No, not a news post, just a post dedicated to one song.

After Johnny Cash‘s stunningly moving cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt,” it seems as if it’s being taken over by the alt.country scene.  Here’s a video of Over the Rhine (Karin Bergquist on vocals) with Kim Taylor singing background vocals:

[source: Bill Ivester, 3rd & Lindsley/Nashville, TN on 7/20/09]

I wonder if Trent even does this song anymore?  Seems like a rare occasion where a cover song trumps the original, and I think the Cash version will actually live on longer.

Here’s Johnny’s video of “Hurt”:

And, if you’re not tired of the song, here’s Georgia metal band Sevendust doing the Cash version:

And, if you need some “heavy” to wash out the country…

REVIEW: Zoë Jakes & Beats Antique @ Faerieworlds (Mt. Pisgah, OR – 7/31/09)

1st Aug 09 (Sat) 5 comments

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

We last saw Zoë Jakes dance with her troupe, Indigo Belly Dance Company with Rachel Brice & Mardi Love, at last year’s Oregon Country Fair.  She has a fun American tribal style fusion mixed with some hip-hop pops & locks.  Anyway, she’s fun, and a lot of her facial expressions remind me of one of our good friends in Ohio (who is now en route to South Carolina).

Anyway… my wife and I got free tickets to last night’s Faerieworlds 2009 festival.  My wife’s working the fest Sat & Sun, but Friday’s Zoë Jakes & Beats Antique show was the main thing I wanted to see.  They started right on time, 7:30pm, and played for 75 minutes.  Beats Antique is comprised of David Satori (Zoë’s squeeze) & Tommy Chappel.  David & Tommy both manned laptops with electronics beats and loops.  Tommy also played some hand drums, and David played violin, guitar, and provided horseback rides.  Zoë danced with 5 or 6 tunes, taking breaks to change and breathe. :)

The crowd was really into the band and Zoë, and were dancing all around us.  Near the end, David brought up a friend who was up front, and she got to dance on stage for a bit (while Zoë was off).  As the band was ending their set, the sun was going down.  It was really a great scene.

The band has a new digital -EP- out called Contraption Vol 1, and can be gotten via their webpage (not on iTunes, yet).  Check it out… it’s got some rad electronic, glitch-rock & dub mixed with world music.

Many pics are below (with a ZIP file with all of the pictures fit to print, but too many to actually post).

Oakshire Overcast Espresso Stout Float

31st Jul 09 (Fri) 7 comments

With the new bottling capabilities of Eugene’s Oakshire Brewery, coupled with Wednesday’s blistering 105° heat in Eugene Oregon, I opted for a tasty treat… a Double Espresso Stout Float.

Three scoops Ciao Bello espresso gelato, about 4-6 ounces of Oakshire Overcast espresso stout, and enjoy! Tasting notes: The espresso gelato was a bit over the top with the already coffee’d up stout.  I’d also recommend trying it with good ol’ vanilla ice cream or even another local Eugene company… Coconut Bliss!!

Also, try a Blue Moon & Orange sherbet float (flippin’ amazing)!!

On Sunday, we hosted July’s Veggie Supper Club in Eugene and set the theme to a BBQ.  I made amazing bbq sauce’d tofu & tempeh, brie/craisin/pistachio quesodillas, and the shockingly easy coconut-rum soaked grilled pineapple

pina colada on a stick

Coconut-rum Grilled Pineapple

serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 pineapple, cored and sliced
  • 1/2 cup coconut rum
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 Tbl lime juice
  • also needed: grill or cast iron pan
  • also needed: wooden or metal skewers

Directions:

  1. Cut pineapple into long slices.
  2. Mix rum, sugar and lime juice together, slightly warming (60-90 seconds in microwave) to allow sugar to dissolve.
  3. Soak in mixture for 1 to 4 hours.
  4. Skewer up and put on grill.  Rotate and cook all sides.  Enjoy!

We are totally making these again.  Soooo easy, and sooo delicious… it’s like a piña colada on a stick.

Medeski Martin & Wood – Radiolarians III

28th Jul 09 (Tue) Leave a comment

I saw the Radiolarians III performance in Eugene last year.  It was GREAT!! Well, yesterday, MMW announced the record release on the MySpaces…

Pre-order on Amazon

Restlessly inventive improvising trio Medeski Martin & Wood are set to release the third installment of The Radiolarian Series on August 4th, 2009. Recorded in December 2008, Radiolarians III perfectly sums up the themes, motifs and styles laid out in the previous two Radiolarians records.

There is an epic feel at play here, as the choruses rise and swell out of low-lying grooves and polyrhythms. Highlights include the passionate and gritty traditional “Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down,” the anthemic “Undone,” and the Latin-influenced acoustic opener “Chantes Des Femmes.” Overall, Radiolarians III finds the trio doing what they do best, melding genres and improvising. What results, is maybe the strongest and most cohesive album of the entire Radiolarians Series.

Woot.

REVIEW: David Bazan [Pedro the Lion] @ House Show (Eugene, OR – 7/25/09)

26th Jul 09 (Sun) 7 comments

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

I last saw David Bazan [former Pedro the Lion frontman] in Eugene almost two years ago (with J. Tillman @ the Indigo District).  I have had a few chances for Portland gigs since then, but they never meshed with my schedule.  The chance to see him at an intimate house show couldn’t be passed up.

I’d heard about house shows / house concerts for a while.  I went to one many years back, but it was friends / local Cincinnatians; so I didn’t really count it as a “real” house show.  Well, this was my first experience with a “national artist” doing a house show.  How it works for David’s booking is 1) the host provides a place for 30-100 people, 2) tickets are sold only online via David’s website, 3) doors at 7:30 / show starts at 8 / people out by 10pm, 4) no sound system needed (just a chair or stool to sit on), and 5) no outside advertising is done.

I was one of 30 or 35 people who got in on the Eugene house show deal.  It was fun to hang out with people before the show.  There was a great spread of food, and I got to talk with the hosts a bit and some wonderful gents who drove down from Vancouver, BC.  The show was BYOB, but they also had some Ninkasi Quantum on tap (or should I say Quant-yum).

David came up a little before 8pm and announced a friend, Blake Wescott, who came up and played 4-5 songs (about 15-20 minutes).  Blake Wescott has worked in the studio with David Bazan / Pedro the Lion, Damien Jurado, Aaron Sprinkle, Denison Witmer, and others.  He’s also toured as a backing musician for R.E.M and Crystal Skulls.  His sound was great, a gentle singer-songwriter.  He mentioned that he played the four songs from his MySpace page: Dreams in Twos, Live Here with You, My Way Home, and Carry On… plus I think he threw in another one.  Great set, I’d see him again if he comes through town!

David went on about 8:10 or so and played and chatted until right about 9:30pm.  He played mostly newer stuff, but threw in a few Pedro the Lion tunes as well.  I mean, he was the driving force of the band.  Afterwards, there was more discussion on the back patio.  It was good to hear him further expanding on some of the “Q&A” discussions from the show.  Anyway, here’s what he played…

Setlist:

  • Hard to Be
  • Please, Baby, Please
  • Priests and Paramedics
  • Q&A #1
  • Harmless Sparks / Fewer Moving Parts
  • June 18, 1976
  • Q&A #2
  • Cold Beer and Cigarettes
  • When We Fell
  • Q&A #3
  • Transcontinental
  • Curse Your Branches
  • Options
  • Q&A #4
  • Bearing Witness
  • Of Up and Coming Monarchs
  • Bless This Mess (aka Weeds in the Wheat)
  • Q&A #5
  • In Stitches

Great experience… I need to try to convince my wife to let me host one sometime at our house.  I think we could handle it for someone like David Bazan, Derek Webb, or Bill Mallonee.  Oh, maybe Michael Kelsey (though it would cost more, as he doesn’t get out here… ever).  Hmm… oh, a Secret Chiefs acoustic Xaphan show in our living room would allow me to die a happy man.  Yeah, I think I’m dreaming.

David announced that the 5-piece band would be coming through Oregon (and elsewhere) again in the Fall, but it will all be officially announced on August 5th.  Yay!

As reported last week, David’s got his solo debut coming out on September 1st.  It’s called Curse Your Branches.  It is now available for pre-order on Amazon now, but will be available through David’s site on August 5th (maybe hold out for that, as he may have some special goodies).

Sufjan Stevens – The BQE (Oct 20th)

21st Jul 09 (Tue) 3 comments

Well, ask and ye shall receive…

The BQE – out 10/20/2009

Sufjan Stevens‘ has a new project coming out, The BQE.  Nope, not a state… it’s a a cinematic suite inspired by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the hula hoop.  It’s due out on October 20, 2009, and will be available as a CD/DVD combo, a double gatefold vinyl with large scale booklet & black-and-white comic book, and a sold-separately color version of the comic book.

The assumed cover art (at top of blog) has a dreadful, tangled mass of a font… much like what I imagine driving on the BQE is like. :)

Dave Douglas & Brass Ecstasy on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert

21st Jul 09 (Tue) Leave a comment

Dave Douglas & Brass Ecstasy released Spirit Moves earlier this year, and it is fantastic… one of the best releases of the year so far.  It’s out now on Greenleaf Music (Dave’s label).

Well, yesterday (7/20), their recent Tiny Desk Concert (a great feature on NPR) was posted as streaming video and as part of the NPR: Live Concerts from All Songs Considered Podcast.  From the article… Afterward, I heard a colleague who works elsewhere in the building rave, “I don’t know anything about jazz, but that was amazing!” See, the mere mention of jazz may scare off many, but when you see experts performing as ebulliently as these folks did, it’s hard to remain unmoved.

Click for Streaming on NPR’s site

Click the picture or hotlink above for streaming video on NPR’s site, or search for “NPR: Live Concerts from All Songs Considered” podcast on iTunes or your favorite podcatcher.

Setlist (17:54)

  • “Spirit Moves” (Douglas)
  • “This Love Affair” (Wainwright)
  • “Twilight of the Dogs” (Douglas)

Personnel

  • Dave Douglas, trumpet
  • Luis Bonilla, trombone
  • Vincent Chancey, French horn
  • Marcus Rojas, tuba
  • Nasheet Waits, drums

I’m mad at Bumbershoot’s schedulers

20th Jul 09 (Mon) 4 comments

Bumber-shoot, indeed.

Sunday (9/6) at BumbershootHoly Fuck, David Cross, Patton Oswalt, Michael Franti, and Jason Mraz are all playing.  I would like to see all of them (in the order shown above).  BUT… they’re all playing at roughly the same time.  Balzac! If I caught all of Holy Fuck’s hour set (which I would be required to, due to the awesomeness that is Holy Fuck), I’d probably catch 15 minutes of Franti, 30 minutes of Cross, none of Oswalt, and about an hour of Mraz (but he’s the low man on the totem pole for me anyway).

Meh… the main draw for me is HF, David Cross & Patton Oswalt.  I don’t think I can justify a $35+fee ticket and 6 hours of driving for HF and 30 minutes of David Cross.  Oh well…

Anyway, check out the lineup over at bumbershoot.org.  Maybe it works out better for you…

two videos… Flaregun & Chali 2Na

18th Jul 09 (Sat) Leave a comment

Two cool videos, for different reasons… first up, from a friend in Cincinnati, Ryan Adcock.  He’s got a new band with Craig Dockery called Flaregun.  The debut album, Ten Sundays, has a couple of songs that are a bit Jebus-y for my tastes (especially compared to Ryan’s earlier work), but the album as a whole is really good.  This debut video for the song “I Seek You” is pretty cool…

Flaregun’s Ten Sundays album can be had at CDBaby (or locally in Cincinnati).

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Next up, totally different style coming at you from Chali 2Na from Jurassic 5.  It’s his lead-off single (“Lock S**t Down” with Talib Kweli) from his debut solo album, Fish Outta Water.  I always loved Chali’s baritone, quick delivery.  Some of the effects in this video are a little cheesy, but overall, it’s a pretty damn fun video…

Fish Outta Water is out now

upcoming David Bazan & a Sufjan senior project

17th Jul 09 (Fri) Leave a comment

Pedro the Lion’s David Bazan is finally releasing his full-length debut.  It’s not his first release under his own name.  He had an EP out in 2006 (Fewer Moving Parts) and has released a few iTunes EPs/singles and some 7″ vinyl releases since Pedro the Lion’s last “band” record, Achilles Heel (in 2004).  David’s album comes out September 1st (on Barsuk Records CD/LP/mp3)… it’s called Curse Your Branches

1. Hard To Be
2. Bless This Mess
3. Please, Baby, Please
4. Curse Your Branches
5. Harmless Sparks
6. When We Fell
7. Lost My Shape
8. Bearing Witness
9. Heavy Breath
10. In Stitches

Keep your peepers here or on davidbazan.com for info as it shows up.

Also, as reported on All Good Naysayers, student Jax de León did a senior graphic design project on Sufjan Stevens‘ 2005 album, Come On Feel the Illinoise, called Illinois: Visualizing Music.

Check out more about Illinois: Visualizing Music (link).

Speaking of Sufjan, Asthmatic Kitty is trying to call Osso’s upcoming album a Sufjan Stevens’ release.  Ha!!!  We’re on to you guys… come on, when is Suffie’s real next album coming out!? :)

OK, I know… Osso’s Run Rabbit Run album is a “real” album… and it’s gonna be rad as hell… but you know what I meant.
