“Hurt”

4th Aug 09 (Tue) Leave a comment

No, not a news post, just a post dedicated to one song.

After Johnny Cash‘s stunningly moving cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt,” it seems as if it’s being taken over by the alt.country scene.  Here’s a video of Over the Rhine (Karin Bergquist on vocals) with Kim Taylor singing background vocals:

I wonder if Trent even does this song anymore?  Seems like a rare occasion where a cover song trumps the original, and I think the Cash version will actually live on longer.

Here’s Johnny’s video of “Hurt”:

And, if you’re not tired of the song, here’s Georgia metal band Sevendust doing the Cash version:

And, if you need some “heavy” to wash out the country…

Here’s the Dillinger Escape Plan performing “Wish” with Trent/NIN down in Australia:

Dave Brubeck Quartet & Radiohead (plus more)

Dave Brubeck Quartet & Radiohead
Take Five” meets “15 Step

I don’t think it works as well as whoever intended it to work… but I suppose it’s OK as far as mashups go.

And in other music…

  • Live electronic artists Holy Fuck have done a cover of Röyksopp‘s “Happy Up Here.”  Check it out (streaming) over HERE.
  • U2‘s new album, No Line on the Horizon, comes out… Tuesday.  I totally forgot about it.  Geez.
  • Sufjan Stevens and Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) joined the Clogs and Bell Orchestre in joining the Brooklyn Philharmonic at the Brooklyn Academy of Music the other day. Check out Pitchfork for a review and pictures of the event, and the Brooklyn Vegan blog posted some pics and a review as well.

Opeth “Burden” single

9th Dec 08 (Tue) Leave a comment

Opeth released an internet-only single today for “Burden” (from the Watershed album).  Sigh… where has the metal gone?  Anyway, this single is definitely more in the non-metal / Damnation-era style – – which is fine, I suppose.  I only bought the b-sides: “Mellotron Heart” and a cover of Alice in Chains‘ “Would?

Mellotron Heart” is a reworking of their first single, “Porcelain Heart,” but on mellotron and mini-moog.  It’s pleasant, but mellower than the original – – which was mellow to start.

The cover of “Would?” is a surprisingly true to the original version of the Alice in Chains hit.  From Opeth, I think I expected more re-working for a cover version.  No offense, Mikael, but if I wanted to listen to a straight-up version of “Would?,” I’d put on Alice in Chains’ Dirt.

They should have made this the cover art…

Anyway, the “Burden” single can be obtained from the iTunes or (I’m sure) other music retailers on the Intertubes.

Also out on iTunes today (which I haven’t vouched for yet)… a new one from Kevin Max, a many artist collaboration called “Price of Silence” with Jurassic 5’s Chali 2Na (I’m sure other big names, too – – I just heard of it from his MySpace bulletin), and the new DM Stith album (he’s done some great work with My Brightest Diamond, Sufjan Stevens, and other Asthmatic Kitty artists).

21st Nov 08 (Fri) Leave a comment

Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond) is on a new covers compilation, Guilt By Association Vol 2.  Also on the compilation are Matt Pond PA and Kaki King (two other artists I like).  For the complete tracklist, go here.  MBD’s version of Soft Cell‘s “Tainted Love” is on the compilation, but also available HERE for FREE.  Yes, free as in “free.”

Also, filed under “late to the dance”… MBD’s Seattle Triple Door concert on Wed the 19th was streaming over on Synclive.com.  Well, it’s no longer streaming (except in time-lapse continuum locales), but the entire hour and 58 minutes of Clare & the Reasons (opener) and My Brightest Diamond are archived.  Go here (click the Synclive picture below):

Tonight is MBD in Eugene… so… it’s gonna be an AWESOMELY heels-over-head* DAY!!! I’ll have pics and a review of the show posted by Sunday at the latest…
