Nellie McKay in the studio
Jazz-pop songstress Nellie McKay is in the studio working on her follow-up to Normal As Blueberry Pie (the wonderful Doris Day tribute from 2009). This news comes in via a twitter update on May 2nd from studio musician – David Raven (pictured at right).

As more concrete info about the forthcoming about comes out, I’ll be sure to post it…
My Brightest Diamond with Dayna Kurtz – split 7″
The split 7″ vinyl from My Brightest Diamond and Dayna Kurtz can now be ordered online (or gotten at a handful of shows currently).
This split seven-inch finds Asthmatic Kitty star My Brightest Diamond and fellow songwriter Dayna Kurtz covering each other’s songs. Kurtz brings her smoky, deep alto to Shara Worden’s ‘Gone Away’ (from the MBD album, Bring Me The Workhorse), twanging spookily through accompanying banjo passages. Worden returns the favor with her take on Kurtz’s ‘Postcards From Downtown’ (from the album of the same name) which is similarly eerie in demeanor but ranks as a slightly more produced-sounding affair, complete with both acoustic and electric guitars, asthmatic old drums and echoing lo-fi keyboard leads. There are only 150 copies of this limited edition single in circulation, so get in there quick.
You can also listen to the tracks at the order page as well.

Sarah Kirkland Snider, My Brightest Diamond & Signal – Penelope

Sarah Kirkland Snider‘s debut album Penelope (New Amsterdam Records, September 2010) is a 60-minute song cycle for female voice, chamber orchestra, and electronics, composed by Sarah Kirkland Snider, featuring vocalist Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond and highly acclaimed chamber orchestra Signal, conducted by Brad Lubman, with sound design by Michael Hammond.
A deft blend of Snider’s classical training and strong interest in indie rock, pop and folk musics, Penelope is a genre-defying work that moves organically from moments of wistful strings-and-harp reflection to dusky post-rock textures with distorted drums and guitars, helmed by a strong sense of melody and a craftsman’s approach to songwriting. Derived from a multimedia-theater piece co-created by Snider and acclaimed playwright Ellen McLaughlin, the work centers on a woman whose long-missing former husband turns up at her door, traumatized by two decades spent in an unnamed war. To restore his memory, the woman reads aloud from Homer’s “Odyssey.” The result is a poignant, haunting story in song.
The New York Times praised the work for having “an elegiac quality that deftly evoked sensations of abandonment, agitation, grief and reconciliation…ably [demonstrating] the poised elegance of Ms. Snider’s writing.”
Penelope has appeared in various guises over the past two years: it originated as a music for a theater piece and then debuted as a song cycle with Signal last May. When Shara came aboard the project, Sarah revised and expanded the songs yet again, tailoring them to Shara’s unique talents and arranging them for Sarah’s dream cast of characters: a 25-person orchestra of strings, harp, percussion, drums, electric guitar and bass, and electronics (with sound design by Michael Hammond). The cycle grew from 40 to 60 minutes. The album comes out this fall!

Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 1 #3
One a month in 2010…
Derek Webb‘s Democracy Vol 1 is rolling along… This month, it’s Bob Dylan‘s “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” I’ll admit, I’m not a Bob Dylan fan (I know, it’s heresy) – but I like Derek’s version regardless of my lack of history with the original.
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 1 was part of the Stockholm Syndrome pre-order package, but you can still join in over at the DW store. My plea for Derek to cover Tori Amos’ “Crucify” is likely not gonna happen. Oh well… I like the first three months’ output regardless.
- January: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
- February: Coldplay – Fix You
- March: Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’

Derek’s playing at the Aladdin Theater in Portland, OR, at the end of the month with Jennifer Knapp. I’ll be there with my camera in-tow. Look forward to a Jazzsick review later in the month.
~Dan – np: Sarah Kirkland Snider w/ My Brightest Diamond – Penelope

Democracy Vol. 1 is the first in a series of subscription based albums of cover songs that Derek will be recording annually, starting January 2010. Those who participate will not only receive the exclusive album, but will democratically decide what songs Derek will record.
Ever wished you could hear Derek cover your favorite Beatles song? Or Backstreet Boys song? Or even re-record your favorite old Caedmon’s Call song? Here’s your chance. Songs will be nominated and voted down to 12. Derek will record them (demo quality) and deliver them digitally (320kbps MP3s), one song per month for 12 months. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb!

Silverchair in studio / iPhone App (2010)

Per the latest Llama Appreciation Society newsletter, the boys of Silverchair – Daniel Johns, Chris Joannou, Ben Gillies – are in the studio, workin’ away:
…the provisional titles for two of the new Silverchair songs are “Machina Collecta” and “16”. Both are on the shortlist of contenders to make the set list for the Groovin The Moo and Bass In The Grass gigs during May. At this stage the band plans to play one or two newies in their set and may even rotate that slot around so they eventually get a chance to try out multiple new songs in the live environment.
“Machina Collecta” was among the first songs that came together when the band began jamming at The Grove Studios on the NSW Central Coast late last year. We could try to describe it but we probably wouldn’t do it justice. Think energy and chaos and a grinding mechanical quality and you’re on the right track.
“16” is much more melodic but in a pretty twisted way. It plays with some sounds and technologies the band has never tried before and is almost kinda … well … funky. This one first came together during one of Daniel’s trips to Tasmania where he was supposed to be recording vocals but one thing lead to another and, hey presto! Everyone’s been singing along with the chorus of this one ever since.
As we write this neither of these songs is fully recorded but both are well on the way and will almost certainly feature prominently on the new – as yet untitled – album. By the time you read this the band will be back in the studio laying down some more tracks before heading out for the May gigs. After that they’ll have a much better idea of likely release dates. At this stage all we can say for sure is that it won’t happen before October but it will hopefully happen before next March. Yes, we wish we could be more precise than that but making great music takes time and, like that paddling duck, the band is working hard no matter how it might look from a distance!
The other upcoming Silverchair moment is expected to be the launch of an iPhone app over coming months. The details of this are still a bit sketchy at press time but keep an eye on our site over coming weeks for more news on it.
Silverchair iPhone App? Yeah, ok, I’d buy it, but band iPwn Apps are usually underwhelming. Still no news on the “old news” of Daniel Johns working with Luke Steele (Hathaway + Palmer)… hopefully that hasn’t been lost…
Ty Tabor’s Something’s Coming (out now)
I got King’s X guitarist Ty Tabor‘s newest solo album, Something’s Coming, in the mail yesterday. Once through, I love it (as if there would be any doubt). It features Jimi Hazel and Rick Skatore from 24-7 Spyz, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal from Guns N’ Roses, and Wally Farkas of Galactic Cowboys and Xenuphobe. You can get it over at Molken (mp3 download or the better option… a physical CD).

More info at http://www.mahj.org/

Holy Fuck – LATIN (due May 11, 2010)
As posted on Pitchfork…

Mostly-instrumental dance-rockers and festival mainstays Holy Fuck have a new album all loaded up and ready to go. On May 11, Young Turks/XL will release Latin, the band’s follow-up to 2007’s LP. The band announced the album’s imminent release yesterday via the deeply sketchy internet chat service Chatroulette. Supposedly first single “Latin America” is streaming on Chatroulette today, if you can find it. (It will be released as an mp3 next week.)
