Porcupine Tree – Bonnie the Cat (video)
Check out the new, Tool-esque video for Porcupine Tree‘s “Bonnie the Cat” from 2009’s The Incident…
click for video at Roadrunner.com
It’s weird… the song didn’t even make me think of Tool, but now watching the CGI/Adam Jones–y stop-animation video, the bass line comes through more and the song definitely reminds me of Tool. Hmmm… I’d expect a little more originality from Steven Wilson & Co… well, at least they’re copying a band for which I have a lot of respect.

Jones & Fripp’s Crimson Tool
So… King Crimson and Tool have toured together in the past. As posted on Blabbermouth, guitarists Adam Jones (Tool) and Robert Fripp (KC) are… well, read it here…
TOOL guitarist Adam Jones met with KING CRIMSON founder and guitar player Robert Fripp last month in London to discuss reactivating a collaborative album the pair began working on several years ago. Fripp revealed the news about the meeting in a post at his online diary, writing, “A fabbo lunch with Adam covering a wide range of common interests & experiencing, among which: the possibilities of continuing our album, begun in Los Angeles some 5-6 years ago; and go out speaking together.”

REVIEW: Madeleine Peyroux @ the Shedd (Eugene, OR – – 3/25/09)
Great show last night… Madeleine Peyroux and her jazzy quartet played a smooth hour and half set at the Shedd. I’m really coming to love the early start time, no opener, and home at a reasonable time shows at the Shedd. No pictures or (accurate) set list from me for this show… I was in a hurry and drove straight in from work in Portland to make it time for the show.
Madeleine had a backing quartet made up of a piano/keyboard/organ/melodica player, an electric/upright bassist, a mandolin/guitarist, and a drummer/cardboard box player. They were a really well put together band…
Songs I remember them playing:
Dance Me to the End of Love, Bare Bones, You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, La Javanaise, Love and Treachery, Our Lady of Pigalle, I Must Be Saved. They came back for an encore dedicated to Barack Obama (There’s Something Grand).
Great, soothing show. Wonderful, lush, Billie Holiday-esque vocals, great accompaniment. If she comes through your town, check her out! Oh, she also has a new CD out, Bare Bones:

Isis, Geo 100, and a Secret DVD
A trio of music news about Isis, George Hrab, and the Secret Chiefs 3…
As foretold in Pitchfork, post-metal band Isis is due out with their follow-up to the amazingly great In the Absence of Truth (2006) on May 5th on Ipecac Recordings. The release is April 21 for the special edition vinyl. Wavering Point is their 5th full-length album, and it features TOOL guitarist Adam Jones on a coupe of songs. The blurb in Pitchfork cracked me up…
And this is just a wild guess, but I’m thinking most of the songs will start out really quiet and pretty and they they’ll get epically loud and crunchy and they’ll last for about eight minutes. Call me crazy.
…because it’s true.

George Hrab‘s Geologic Podcast (i.e.- the best free thing on the internets) just turned 100. With one every week (give or take), that’s roughly 2 solid years of putting out an almost album’s worth of comedy and musical goodness every stinkin’ week!? Check him out:

Oh, and he’s working on album #6… which is oh so nice…
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
And according to the prophecies and the motto of “screen shot or it didn’t happen,” I present you with this gem of “based on their track record, it probably won’t actually come out on time“… the Secret Chiefs 3 have a live DVD coming out in “March” on Web of Mimicry:
We shall see…

I’m such a tool…
… fan.
Arguably one of the most artistic bands in the hard music scene today (if not ever), Revolver Magazine has just put out a special Tool only issue… it’s on newstands as of yesterday (and also online).

TOOL is like the darker kin to prog/artrockers King Crimson. Maynard James Keenan‘s vocals can both sooth and split. Adam Jones‘ guitars bring a lot to the table, as does his artistic direction (and sculpture background) on their many creepy, yet tenaciously detailed, video imagery. Danny Carey (drums) and Justin Chancellor (bass) know how to build an inspiring rhythm (one of my favorite tracks “Reflection” from Lateralus is a great example of their handiwork).
Plus, their artistic collaboration with COSM‘s Alex Grey is cool in its own right (I have a print of “Net of Being” pictured below). It’s radly displayed in our massage room here at home.

Anyway, I like the band. The new Revolver Magazine is spiffy. If you like Tool, go out and grab a copy…

Oh, I almost forgot… be sure to check out Tool‘s awe-inspiring collaboration with the Dalai Lama.
oh snap,
