Radiohead – King of Limbs (retail version artwork)

21st Mar 11 (Mon) Leave a comment

As reported over on At EaseRadiohead’s The King of Limbs CD is housed in a 4-page wallet, with the actual cd in a slit on the right side. On the left page you can see 8 illustrations accompanied by the following titles: Roots Of Roots, Ragnorok, Urpflanze, The King Of Limbs, Codex, Axis Mundi, Yggdrasil and Arbor Philosophica. The back has the word RADIOHEAD mirrored and the track list.

For the vinyl, expect the same front and back as the cd. The actual record is housed in an inner sleeve with a drawing (like the right page on the cd edition) on one side, and the drawings and credits on the other side. Inside the sleeve you’ll find a card with a download code to obtain the digital edition of The King Of Limbs.  No word on if additional songs/limbs will surface with this or with the “Newspaper edition” in May.  READ MORE about the artwork and credits, etc at At Ease.

The King of Limbs comes out March 29th in the U.S.  you can pre-order it now over on the Amazon: in both CD / VINYL versions.

Sufjan Stevens – The Age of Adz

26th Aug 10 (Thu) 1 comment

Last week they announced the All Delighted People EP. And the week before the fall tour was announced. And today, Asthmatic Kitty announced the upcoming release of The Age of Adz (pronounced Odds), the first song-based full-length from Sufjan Stevens since 2005’s Illinois.

8/27 update: Preview of “I Walked” HERE.

http://asthmatickitty.com/the-age-of-adz

The Age of Adz tracklist
1. Futile Devices – 2:11
2. Too Much – 6:44
3. Age of Adz – 8:00
4. I Walked – 5:01 preview
5. Now That I’m Older – 4:56
6. Get Real Get Right – 5:10
7. Bad Communication – 2:24
8. Vesuvius – 5:26
9. All for Myself – 2:55
10. I Want To Be Well – 6:27
11. Impossible Soul – 25:35

The Age of Adz will drop on October 12th (CD, MP3) with a double-LP following on November 9th. For the next three weeks you can pre-order the CD or LP, and receive an MP3 download on September 28th, two weeks before the release date.

Per Asthmatic Kitty:

It’s much too soon to cast descriptive lots, but we can say the new album sounds nothing like the All Delighted EP (although it shares similar themes of love, loss, and the apocalypse). Nor is this new album built around any conceptual underpinning (no odes to states, astrology, or urban expressways). We can say it shows an extensive use of electronics (banjos and acoustic guitars give way to drum machines and analog synthesizers), and an obsession with cosmic fantasies (space, heaven, aliens, love), to create an explicit pop-song extravaganza, augmented by heavy orchestration, and maybe even a few danceable moments. Enjoy Your Rabbit meets the BQE. But with songs. Verse, chorus, bridge, backbeat. Gated reverb. Space echo. Get your boogey on. The ‘Adz’ of the title loosely refers to the apocalyptic paintings of outsider artist Royal Robertson (1930-1997), whose work is used for the album cover, interior design, and as general inspiration for the tone of the album.”

Wow… 2010 is the Year of the Sufjan.

Goddamn Electric Bill – Jazz (vinyl)

22nd Aug 10 (Sun) Leave a comment

Jason Torbert, aka Goddamn Electric Bill, is putting out his fourth album soon… this time on vinyl, and this time with our help.  He’s started a campaign via Kickstarter to gain enough pre-order support to make the vinyl happen.

There are several different packages including vinyl only, vinyl + bsides, vinyl+ bsides + CD, et cetera.  He needs to raise $1,500 by Sept 17th.  He’s about half way there as of now, but the project won’t happen if he doesn’t raise enough.  For those not in the know about GdEB, it’s a fantastic melodic, organic electronic soundscape.  Check out some tunes on MySpace or his video for “Ten Thousand Years” here:

I pitched in… I hope you dig the music and do the same.  Let’s make GdEB’s Jazz album on vinyl a reality!

MxBx 3″

1st Oct 09 (Thu) Leave a comment

So, I got into Melt Banana (aka MxBx) when they put out a 5″ vinyl / 3″ CD split with Mike Patton’s Fantômas back in 2005 called “Animali in Calore Surriscaldati con Ipertermia Genitale / Cat in Red” on Italian label Unhip Records.  MxBx are the Japanese noise metal cousin of Fantômas; so the split single as a marketing tool worked… I was hooked on Melt Banana.

They’ve got a new 3″ CD / 7″ vinyl coming out called “initial t.” on Init Records.  Three songs were recorded in early 2008, and it allegedly picks up where their 2007 album Bambi’s Dilemma left off.  The CD is packaged in a 3″ cardboard jacket.  The vinyl’s first pressing is limited to 1,000 copies (200 on blue marble vinyl, 200 on mixed vinyl, 600 on black vinyl) and includes a download card for MP3’s of the record.  Artwork on both the CD and vinyl is in “stunning full-color” by Aaron Horkey.  It is expected to be available for pre-order from the Init website as of today, 10/1, and it ships in late October.  They’re currently list as “coming soon”… so, if you’re one of the ones who wants to get a blue marble vinyl, keep your clicker finger warmed up.

They’ve swung through Eugene once since I’ve lived here, but I was unluckily out of town.  Well, they’re playing Portland in December; so I’m there.  Here are the rest of their US Tour dates for MxBx Lite (vocals guitar & drums):

Tori Amos – Midwinter Graces

20th Sep 09 (Sun) 2 comments

OK, so Tori Amos is putting out a holiday album.  I really don’t like holiday albums.  I can count on one finger-based peace sign how many contemporary artists’ holiday album that I like (Over the Rhine‘s Darkest Night of the Year & Monk‘s How Like a Winter).  I say “contemporary artists’ holiday album” because I think Vince Guaraldi‘s falls into a different category whatsoever.  With other artists I like, they tend to end up crap (Aimee Mann’s was dreadful) or bordering on boredom (Sufjan Stevens’ was passable and original but not something I’m pulling out a lot, Nellie McKay’s was in a similar bucket… the list could go on…).  But it’s usually not the artist’s fault, it’s usually the material.  Christmas music is just so laaaaaame most of the time.  I don’t know…

With Tori Amos, I think it has the potential to go either way.  I think she could maybe write some great original pieces, a la Over the Rhine, but she could also pile on the schlock a la Aimee Mann.  My guess is that it’ll be middle of the road a la Sufjan & Nellie.  The cover art looks cheesy as hell (see press release below).

Release date is November 10th.  It’s available for pre-order over on the Amazons.  So, we shall see soon enough…

Here’s the Official Press Release…

After nearly two decades writing and recording some of her generation’s most emotionally powerful music, Tori Amos will release her first seasonal album, Midwinter Graces, on November 10 via Universal Republic. A follow up to Tori’s critically acclaimed studio album, Abnormally Attracted to Sin, Midwinter Graces will find Tori reworking and expanding on classic carols as well as developing some of her very own seasonal tracks.

Midwinter Graces is an album that has been in the making for the past 40 years. Raised in the Baltimore area under the watchful eye of her Methodist minister father, Tori grew up playing holiday carols at Sunday services and Christmas Day celebrations in her father’s church. These were the songs that gave a young Tori her first taste of music, and now almost 40 years later Tori gets her own chance to reimagine the classics.

Tracklist:
What Child, Nowell
Star of Wonder
A Silent Night with You
Candle: Coventry Carol
Holly, Ivy, and Rose
Harps of Gold
Snow Angel
Jeanette, Isabella
Pink and Glitter
Emmanuel
Winter’s Carol

Sufjan’s The BQE

16th Sep 09 (Wed) Leave a comment

So… I’ve heard the new CD from Sufjan Stevens, called The BQE.  (Thanks Asthmatic Kitty for the pre-release download.Wow. No vocals, but very much a Sufjan album, though.  The instrumentation borders on classic Sufjan instrumentals from Illinoise and Michigan (specifically the flute trills) mixed with more conservative chamber music (piano, strings, horns, tympani, et al).  It also jumps into a very Enjoy Your Rabbit moment with “Movement IV – Traffic Shock.”

AK DOWNLOAD: Sufjan Stevens – Movement VI–Isorhythmic Night Dance with Interchanges (FREE MP3)

The BQE tracklist

  1. Prelude on the Esplanade (2:56)
  2. Introductory Fanfare for the Hooper Heroes (1:07)
  3. Movement I–In the Countenance of Kings (5:19)
  4. Movement II–Sleeping Invader (4:34)
  5. Interlude I–Dream Sequence in Subi Circumnavigation (3:33)
  6. Movement III–Linear Tableau with Intersecting Surprise (4:09)
  7. Movement IV–Traffic Shock (3:24)
  8. Movement V–Self-Organizing Emergent Patterns (3:45)
  9. Interlude II–Subi Power Waltz (0:28)
  10. Interlude III–Invisible Accidents (0:54)
  11. Movement VI–Isorhythmic Night Dance with Interchanges (3:17)
  12. Movement VII (Finale)–The Emperor of Centrifuge (3:51)
  13. Postlude–Critical Mass (2:59)

I think it fits very well within Sufjan’s oeuvre.  A fan of his instrumental tunes interspersed within his State’s records should truly enjoy The BQE.  The limited edition, which is on order for me, has presumably a lush packaging with a full-color booklet accompanying the vinyl.  I can’t wait to crack it open…

bike ride tours, any speed vinyl, the bqe, a van & streaming ‘deth

11th Sep 09 (Fri) Leave a comment

5 music news stories… Peter Mulvey, Holy Fuck, Sufjan Stevens, David Bazan/Pedro the Lion and Megadeth…

So, Peter Mulvey has toured all over the world.  A few years back, he started also doing some bike tours within his own state.  Well, he just embarked on his “Long Haul” Tour in support of his new, fantastic record Letters from a Flying Machine.

He’s riding 1,100 miles from Grand Rapids, MI to Northampton, MA on The Long Haul Tour, September 9 – 26.  His friend, and presumably co-rider, Kathy Wittman will be blogging about it as it goes on.  The daily blog will be HERE.  Here’s his tour path, created via the Google based on his gigs along the route:

(click for larger)

He’ll be in Oregon (Portland and Eugene) in early November.  Not part of the bike tour, but I’ll be glad to see him nonetheless.  In fact, he might be less worn out from riding so much.  Getting to see him twice in one weekend is gonna be fantastic… PS- go to PeterMulvey.com for info on the new record.  Seriously, it’s good, folks!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Next up… a vinyl you can play at either 33 1/3 or 45 rpm…

This one from Off the International Radar including a remix by fellow Toronto’ans Holy Fuck.  I don’t know about the rest of the songs on “Hot Lips,” but the Holy Fuck collaboration features “Holy Radar” – which is a reworking of OTIR’s “E bowl of Iris.”  Holy Fuck sped up the original recording on a record player in studio and then played along and added their own layers.  So, at 33 1/3, you’ll hear OTIR with a slowed down HF; and on 45 rpm, you’ll hear HF with a sped-up OTIR.  You can listen to the “as normally played” version of the song on OITR‘s MySpace page.  There is also ordering links there as well.

Sufjan StevensThe BQE (as reported here) is coming out in limited edition vinyl (in addition to the CD/DVD combo).  It’s now up for pre-order at the Asthmatic Kitty store and over at Amazon.  Also, in the news, Sufjan will be playing his 2004 album Seven Swans in its entirety at ATP NYC this weekend. ATP = All Tomorrow’s Parties (festival).

Could it happen?

15th Jul 09 (Wed) 4 comments

Could a live album make my favorite’s list by year’s end?

Well, I just pre-ordered the latest Live from Nowhere offering (#4 to be exact) from Cincinnati band, Over the Rhine.  It’s a double-disc recording of most of the Dec 2008 Taft Reunion concert with founding guitarist Ric Hordinski and founding drummer Brian Kelley joining the still-in-the-band wife-and-husband team of Karin  Bergquist (vocals / guitar / etc) and Linford Detweiler (keyboards / bass / etc).  Ric left in 1996/97 (I don’t know when exactly as he was gone before I got into them and their Wiki page is weak*), and Brian left at the end of 1998 (IIRC).  I saw OTR with Brian, but never with Ric (though I’ve seen Ric plenty of times with his band Monk & solo).

*– Hey, Bruce, if you read this, the OTR Wiki could use a Bruce’ing up... especially on the early era.

With the new release (expected out in August), you get an immediate download.  I’m on track 6 of disc 1 now, and I love it.  It makes me wish I could have afforded to go to the actual show back in December.

Anyway, here’s the artwork & tracklist (95 minutes total):

Blurb from the webpage

From out of nowhere Secret Chiefs 3 (operating here as Traditionalists, one of the seven ‘satellite bands’ introduced on Secret Chiefs 3’s album Book of Horizons) presents an elaborate “colonna sonora paranoica” — a paranioac film soundtrack. The film is imagined, but the horror is real. This entire project, as you might expect from this band, is a spiralling allegory that extends itself well-beyond its starting-point cliché as a “soundtrack for a non-existent film.” But that’s always been one of those potentially good clichés, in theory anyway. Pursuant to that potential, this particular work remains singularly, decidedly faithful to its sworn genre, the Giallo Horror Film Soundtrack.

At this point, it’s fair to assume we can take the dizzying conceptual maelstrom that comes with anything SC3-related as a “given,” right?
Alright, so we won’t go into that here.

But a word on the strictly musical side of things is warranted. The first thing to note is that Giallo cinema music has the distinction of having been graced by nearly all the great masters of Italian film music in general: Bruna Nicolai, Stelvio Cipriani, Ennio Morricone, Goblin, Pierro Piccioni etc. And though this area of “B cinema” certainly has its appreciators, one still-underplayed element is that when considering the music, Giallo’s harmonic language was developed by brilliant people who, by current musical and aesthetic standards, set the bar very high. For any of us wannabes to share in the magic of this lost artform, we have to bring a bit more more to the table than some vintage amps & keyboards and vague undeveloped musical ideas based only in hipster aesthetics. Because if you ignore the deeper intricacies of the music theory at work, the orchestration, the arrangement, etc., you’re really only asking to make an ass of yourself (which is likely anyway no matter what you do). But the usual thing is to sample stuff or simply borrow themes from the masters and to then repackage them in a new “updated” context. Well, in a climate like that we should emphasize that Le Mani Destre Recise Degli Ultimi Uomini is quite simply an album of original compositions. The process should be likened to when someone is learning another language and begins to have dreams in that language. It’s the same process in any style of music, really. So to state it plainly, these are original compositions that were dreamt into being in the harmonic language of the Giallo Horror Film Soundtrack. It’s that simple. The point is not to be strictly period-specific, or culturally-specific, but to be psychically specific — caring first and foremost about how to convey things that will affect the psychic state of the listener in the intended way. After all, the point of dreaming in this particular language, with all its sophistication, elegance and beauty, is to go that much more deeply into the territory of nightmare… and um, let’s just say SC3 feel it’s necessary to pursue this particular range of the human experience at this moment.

The album itself is a full orchestral score that fully capitalizes on SC3 stock of musical manpower (Trey Spruance, Ches Smith, Timb Harris, Shahzad Ismaily, William Winant, et al.) and adds to that a broad cast of A-list hired musicians (among them Laurie Goldstein and Hans Teuber). The material runs the gamut; dissonant violent strings receding to beautiful textures with flute and female vocals through echoplex; analog synthesizers, harpsichords and celestas over a tight ’70s-style rock band rhythm section; crazed psychedelic freakouts with major payoffs; church organs granting repose, until tape treatments and a chorus of possessed shrieking voices force the listener to reconsider his position on the existence of Evil… If you can imagine all that produced to the standard found on any other Secret Chiefs 3 release, you’ve pretty much got the idea here.

The album was mixed analog to 1/2 inch tape. LP comes in 180 gram vinyl. CD is a mock gatefold LP, with a printed sleeve. Pure win.

The album title, roughly translated, means “The Severed Right Hands of the Last Men.”

OMG.  For me at least… Caveat: Based on the sound sample, it doesn’t appear to be one of Trey’s more “accessible” SC3 releases; so I suppose maybe wait on Book of Souls if you’re not already a fan of SC3 or movie music.
