Shara Worden & yMusic @ Ecstatic Music Festival 2011 (concert webcast)

18th Mar 11 (Fri) Leave a comment

WQXR/WNYC just posted 2+ hours of live streaming music from Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and yMusic’s performance at the Ecstatic Music Festival at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall.

This show features Shara Worden wearing both her composer and performer hats. yMusic premieres a work written for them by Shara and the classical/indie vocalist joins the instrumentalists on stage in selections from Sarah Kirkland Snider’s recent 2010 release, Penelope, one of my favorite albums of 2010 – which features Shara’s stunning vocals.

This performance by Shara Worden and yMusic is the third of four New Sounds Live broadcasts on Q2 from Merkin’s Hall’s Ecstatic Music Festival. Check out the other two webcasts – the 2011 People’s Commissioning Fund concert and Newspeak and Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society. The final broadcast on March 28 features So Percussion and Bobby Previte.

The GOASTT Tour

13th Nov 10 (Sat) 2 comments

Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl‘s band The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger just put out their debut album Acoustic Sessions

On their debut album, “Acoustic Sessions”, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger show their love of quirky and whimsical ’60s folk pop, reminiscent at times of Syd Barrett, Incredible String Band and Simon & Garfunkel. Though stripped-down to spotlight their idiom juggling and intriguing wordplay, the sparse arrangements are adventurous and playful, anchored by the beautiful blend of Sean and Charlotte’s voices, acoustic guitar and a smattering of other instruments – a vibraphone here, a banjo there. GOASTT weaves narratives around a metaphysical geography of their own devising, finding a surrealist beauty in the mundane.

They are doing a quick set of dates in France / Germany / Netherlands in December, but they’re making a swing around the US in early 2011.  Check to their dates below…

GOASTT 2010/2011 Tour (backwards order)

I’m really stoked, as The Woods is an awesome, intimate venue in Portland.  I imagine the rest of the venues are similar.  For a feel for their sound, check out this in-studio video:

My Brightest Diamond @ Le Poisson Rouge (Dec 2008)

I’m reusing this press photo of My Brightest Diamond, because I think it’s rad…

Baeble Music recently recorded My Brightest Diamond‘s entire concert at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC last year (12.13.08).  I’ve only watched the first few songs so far, but it is fantastic.  The setlist is very similar to the Eugene show that I went to in late November 2008, with a few songs swapped around in the order.

** Watch the full concert at baeblemusic.com **** Watch the full concert at baeblemusic.com **

** Check out the blog & photos from the show as well **

I can’t get the embedding to work (WordPress.com blogs are like that sometimes on non-YouTube/Google videos); so just click the link or picture above.  Baeble Music has tons of other live shows that they filmed on their site as well.  Check ’em out: http://www.baeblemusic.com/

And as an unrelated side-note…

…the February 1 [2009] interview with John Zorn on WNYC‘s Ear to Ear with David Garland is excellent.  It’s 76 minutes of new John Zorn music and insight into the overworked, overjoyed musical genius.  It is available in its entirety for download over at WYNC’s website:

It features some recent music [fall/winter ’08] and some as of now unreleased music.  Score!
