REVIEW: Oregon Percussion Ensemble’s FRANK ZAPPA Tribute @ UO’s Beall Hall (Eugene, OR – – 3/7/09)

I went to the University of Oregon’s Beall Concert Hall yesterday afternoon for a wonderful tribute to Frank Zappa put on by the UO College of Music’s Oregon Percussion Ensemble, conducted by W. Sean Wagoner. It was a show that I found out about in the Eugene Weekly… yay for the local entertainment rag for giving us last minute cool info!
The show was great… about 90 minutes including breaks. All percussion, except for a bass player and a violinist for “The Black Page Part 1 & 2.” OK, there was a pianist and a tap dancer, too… but those are technically percussion instruments. :P
Setlist:
- Concerto No. 1, Op. 12.3(1986) – composed by Ney Rosauro, soloist: Paul Owen (marimba)
- I. Saudacao (Greetings)
- II. Lamento (Lament)
- III. Danca (Dance)
- IV. Despedida (Farewell)
- Ionisation for thirteen percussionists (1929-1931) – composed by Edgard Varese
- Waltz (1958) – composed by Frank Zappa, soloist: Merlin Showalter (vibraphone)
- Magnesium Zapp II (2009) – composed by Charles Dowd
- The Black Page Drum Solo (1976) – composed by Frank Zappa, soloist: Paul Owen (drumset)
- The Black Page, Part I (1976) – composed by Frank Zappa
- The Black Page, Part II (1976) – composed by Frank Zappa
The first part of the first piece (Saudacao) was very Zappaesque… heavy on the marimba and xylophonic percussion… fast melodies, and the crazy percussive triplets or whatever you drummers call them. :) The rest of Concerto No. 1 wasn’t as Zappaesque, but it definitely was a great warm-up to the rest of the show. Paul Owen’s marimba work was great and the rest of the band really broke loose on this 20-something-minute piece.
Next up was Ionisation by Edgard Varese, from whom Zappa had only one degree of separation… the conductor for the first performance of Ionisation in the 30s was Nicolas Slonimsky, who later became a friend of Frank’s and also went out on tour with Zappa’s early 80s band. The piece was an avant-garde percussive piece, if set-up as designed (which I assume they did) was 3 bass drums, 2 Side drums, 2 Snare drums, tarole, 2 bongos, tambourine, tambour militaire, crash cymbal, suspended cymbals, 3 tam-tams, gong, 2 anvils, 2 triangles, sleigh bells, chimes, celesta, piano, Chinese blocks, claves, maracas, castanets, whip (instrument), guiro, high & low sirens, and a lion’s roar. I don’t remember a whip or lion’s roar… but regardless, it was fun and adventurous.
Waltz was the first official Zappa piece of the afternoon. It was about a 2 minute, 12-tone vibraphone solo by Merlin Showalter. It seemed like it was over before it started, but it was a nice piece.
Magnesium Zapp II continued in the Zappa theme… though not written by him. It was written by UO Director of Music Charles Dowd, who drew inspiration from Frank Zappa’s “Girl in the Magnesium Dress” from The Yellow Shark. It was somewhat avant-garde, improvisational with some structure. It also had small melodies written in to represent F-R-A-N-K and Z-A-P-P-A, which they went over beforehand… and it was fun to pick it out when they were playing it. Basically a 26-note run equating to the English alphabet… blah blah blah, you do the math.
Next up was The Black Page… I’d seen Terry Bozzio play this at the 2006 Zappa Plays Zappa tour in Louisville, and for the uninitiated, Zappa wrote it as a technical challenge. The musicians dreaded seeing all of the black notes on the page… hence its name.
Percussion/Battery drum transcript (PDF):
The Ensemble started this as simply a drum solo by Paul Owen. He did a great job on this 3-4 minute very technical solo. Then the solo was played again by Paul… and 9 more drummers (and a tap dancer) at the same time, nearly perfectly in sync. It was quite mind blowing seeing all 10 drum sets around the front of the stage when we got back from the short intermission, but I had no idea they all be playing the solo together. Crazy good stuff. The only downside, we could barely see the tap dancer (Alli Bach) as she was behind the drum sets, but she was going nuts and hitting all of the notes as well… per W. Sean Wagoner (the conductor), this was the world premiere of a tap dance transcription for The Black Page. :)
After the solo(s), they played the Black Page in both Zappa’s variations… the “Hard Version” and the “Easy Teenage NY Version.” Much more melodic (not all on drums, as some of the drummers moved to play other instruments). They were also joined by piano, electric violin and bass. Great stuff… about 5 minutes for each version.
Good stuff… well worth the $5… like criminally worth it.
Seinfeld + Curb / Reptet Tour / OTC Tour / Jurassic 5 spin-off

Entertainment Weekly reported recently that Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards will have appearances in multiple episodes of (co-Seinfeld creator) Larry David‘s Curb Your Enthusiasm this season. Yay!

I’m bummed, as when they’ll be here in Eugene, I’ll be up in their neck of the woods in Seattle. And when they’re back in Seattle the next day, I already got Spinal Tap tickets at the Paramount in Seattle. “Boo” for too many things on the same day. Anyway, they put on a great show. Check ’em out… it’s fun, frolicky, goof-off jazz wonderment.

One of my favorite, now-defunct rap groups Jurassic 5 has a new spin-off. Solo albums first by Cut Chemist, Chali 2Na, and DJ Nu-Mark… Akil the MC has one in the works, too… Now Marc7 and Zakir (aka Soup) have formed a new group called Portable Payback. Sounds pretty smooth – which fits in with 7even & Soup’s style in J5.
Check them out on the MySpaces: http://www.myspace.com/portablepayback
Talk about bumcakes…

Spinal Tap are touring with a stripped down acoustic, unwigged show this spring…
Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer
David St. Hubbins (played by McKean), Nigel Tufnel (played by Guest) and Derek Smalls (played by Shearer) will be playing songs from the Spinal Tap catalog (This is Spinal Tap album & movie & Break Like the Wind album) as well as a few as The Folksmen from A Mighty Wind. If you’ve never seen This is Spinal Tap… well, it’s a classic. Do yourself a favor and check it out…
A Mighty Wind is also great, if you ask me.

Faith No More to Rehearse Today…
Well, the revelation from the late 2008 query is out… Faith No More are getting back together for at least some European tour dates. No U.S. dates or album plans, but I’m holding out hope. Per a twitter from bassist Billy Gould, the band will rehearse today (3/4/09) for the first time in over 10 years…

The line-up will be their touring lineup from 1997: vocalist Mike Patton, keyboardist Roddy Bottum, bassist Billy Gould, drummer Mike Bordin, and guitarist Jon Hudson. I’ll post dates when/if they come in.

I don’t think it works as well as whoever intended it to work… but I suppose it’s OK as far as mashups go.
And in other music…

- U2‘s new album, No Line on the Horizon, comes out… Tuesday. I totally forgot about it. Geez.
- Sufjan Stevens and Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) joined the Clogs and Bell Orchestre in joining the Brooklyn Philharmonic at the Brooklyn Academy of Music the other day. Slow Music
From an abstract art point of view, I love this. From a practical part of view, I think it’s ludicrous… which, I guess, is another reason to love it.
The slowest and longest piece of music in the world
John-Cage-Organ-Project in Halberstadt, GermanySince September 5, 2000, which is the 88th birthday of the avantgarde composer and artist John Cage, the slowest and longest concert that the world has ever heard has been playing: ORGAN2/ASLSP As SLow aS Possible that means this piece of music, for the organ, will be performed for 639 years in the church of St. Burchardi in Halberstadt, Germany.
How slow is “As slow as possible”?
In 1985 ASLSP was created as a version for the piano, but in 1987 John Cage changed it for the organ at the suggestion of the organist Gerd Zacher. The question of how to realise the opus leads to the conclusion that “as slow as possible” can be thought and played indefinitely – at least as long as the life of an organ lasts remains and also as long as peace and creativity in the following generations exist. But the question remained: How long should the piece be? The first organ performance was 29 minutes. A recent recording lasts 71 minutes. From that question a project was developed over the time that caused a worldwide sensation. But why Halberstadt and why 639 years?
Michael Praetorius, a composer of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, wrote that an organ with the first modern keyboard arrangement had been built in Halberstadt’s cathedral in 1361. This organ was the first one with a claviature of 12 notes and this claviature is used on our keyboard instruments today. So one can say that the cradle of modern music was in Halberstadt. Subtract 1361 from the millennial year 2000, and the result is 639.

Oh, and totally unrelated, but it popped up on my RSS feed… TOOL frontman Maynard James Keenan‘s side project, PUSCIFER, will perform at Club Nokia in Los Angeles on April 4, 2009. He just got off a three-day stint at the Pearl in Las Vegas’ Palms Casino. Maybe this one-city-being-booked-at-a-time tour will come my way sometime before 2012. :)

oh, sweet… Futurama’s on…
“Good news everyone…”
OK… so, Futurama might come back to TV. As was reported on Paste’s blog…
After being treated like a red-headed stepchild and mismanaged by the bumbling Fox network, Futurama, the sometimes uneven sci-fi comedy developed by Matt Groening, may return to the station’s line-up after all. The announcement comes by way of Billy West, who voiced Professor Farnsworth, Fry and Zapp Brannigan. [Read more over at Paste.]
Geeks who’d rather watch Futurama than do other things rejoice everywhere (warning: that link, while humorous, is not necessarily suitable for work). Futurama had four seasons on Fox before being canceled. Their run on Comedy Central’s Adult Swim and their recent straight-to-DVD movies have kept the dream alive, and as of now may make returning to primetime a good idea for Fox.

Yann Tiersen, SXSW, Nellie McKay
Well… triple threat news again. This time it’s all about a touring Tiersen, a festival in Austin that every-indie-body loves, and my favorite Nellie (rhymes with McPie). In order of recency…

OK… so 3 hours ago I found out that French musician Yann Tiersen was touring. Touring the U.S. Touring through Portland… holy crap. For those who don’t know Yann Tiersen, click his name above or know that he makes great French music that got a lot more prominence with the Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie Amélie. I never thought he’d play any semblance of a decent North American tour… Anyway, here are the tour dates:

The SXSW music festival is a’going on again. I don’t really have a desire (or time off during busy season) to go to it this year. If I had time off in March, I’d be in San Francisco anyway. This year’s SXSW schedule is out (http://www.sxsw.com/).
If I went, I’d totally check out Peter Mulvey (he’s awesome) on the Signature Sounds stage, and Fol Chen on the Asthmatic Kitty stage… OK, and maybe Tori Amos, but she’s far from indie (she’s got a new one coming out in the spring, titled Abnormally Attracted to Sin).
Oh, and I’d probably also check out Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head on whatever stage they’re playing at SXSW… as you can’t argue with a band name like that (though I will say I’ve never ever heard the band). Hot!

My Brightest Diamond @ Le Poisson Rouge (Dec 2008)
I’m reusing this press photo of My Brightest Diamond, because I think it’s rad…

Baeble Music recently recorded My Brightest Diamond‘s entire concert at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC last year (12.13.08). I’ve only watched the first few songs so far, but it is fantastic. The setlist is very similar to the Eugene show that I went to in late November 2008, with a few songs swapped around in the order.

I can’t get the embedding to work (WordPress.com blogs are like that sometimes on non-YouTube/Google videos); so just click the link or picture above. Baeble Music has tons of other live shows that they filmed on their site as well. Check ’em out: http://www.baeblemusic.com/
And as an unrelated side-note…
…the February 1 [2009] interview with John Zorn on WNYC‘s Ear to Ear with David Garland is excellent. It’s 76 minutes of new John Zorn music and insight into the overworked, overjoyed musical genius. It is available in its entirety for download over at WYNC’s website:

It features some recent music [fall/winter ’08] and some as of now unreleased music. Score!

Four shots of espresso…

- Dream Theater will have a new album out in the Summer. My guess is that it’ll have long songs, some rockin’, some ballads, and it’ll mostly be enjoyable when there is no singing involved. No title for the album yet. My guess would be that it’ll be named after some obscure latin verb conjugated in a clever way, or some multi-syllabic extinct bird and/or fish. They’ll be kicking off the Progressive Nation 2009 Tour. Dates are not out yet, but I hope they swing through Portland, OR (or at a minimum, Seattle). And… and… and…
- Zappa Plays Zappa will be on the bill for that tour. So will Pain of Salvation and Beard Fish, but that’s totally not as cool as Zappa Plays Zappa and Dream Theater in one night. Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater drummer) is a huge Frank Zappa fan; so I bet it’s a dream come true for him as well… I’m more stoked for ZPZ than DT. Eh, sue me.
- Iron & Wine is releasing a b-sides / rarities double-disc set called Around the Well (May 19, Sub Pop), and he’s also heading out on an all-request tour. Check out the tracklist for the double-disc as well as the tour dates over at Pitchfork (link).
- U2 will essentially take over as house band on the David Letterman Show with five days in a row performances the week of March 2nd in support of their upcoming album, No Line on the Horizon.
Half and half…
- Maynard James Keenan and his Puscifer project’s three nights of shows at the Palms in Las Vegas is underway now. Feb 13, 14, 15… anyone go? Got a good review? I’m totally jealous.
The “don’t burn your hands” sleeve that goes around the cup…
- Björk is re-issuing the underwhelming Volta in a special 4-disc edition that I may actually spring for (i.e.- I never bought Volta, but this version looks great). It’s called Voltaic, and it’s the Volta CD (billed as “Songs From The Volta Tour Performed Live At Olympic Studios”), a CD of the official remixes, a live DVD from Paris & Reykjavik, and a DVD of the Volta videos. Quite frankly, the DVD of the videos is what piqued my interest (see gif to the right).
Hmmm… now I’m craving a venti americano with room for cream.

Dave Douglas & Brass Ecstasy – Spirit Moves

This from the latest Greenleaf Music email from trumpeter Dave Douglas…
My new recording with Brass Ecstasy, to be titled Spirit Moves, is to be released in the coming months. It’s a thrill to be playing alongside these great brass players: Luis Bonilla, Vincent Chancey, and Marcus Rojas. And the great drummer Nasheet Waits. This is kind of a new deal for me and I’m psyched to get out there and play some dates with the band.
Yay… Dave Douglas’ last studio album, Keystone’s Moonshine, was one of my favorite CDs of 2007 (by far). And his instant live series in 2006 & 2008 were awesomely jam-packed with great music (21+ hours in total, 11+ hours of non-repeating music among the two years). So, new music from this trumpeter / bandleader is a-OK with me. I get to see him next month play with the SFJazz Collective; so it’ll be nice to get that Dave Douglas live fix satiated in 2009. :)
REVIEW: That1Guy @ WOW Hall (Eugene, OR – – 2/11/09)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM
Well, this was my 5th time seeing That1Guy and the Magic Pipe. He is a truly mesmerizing performer… the inclusion of the Magic Saw and Magic Boot are also great, but the true show is seeing Mr. 1Guy put a crazy go nuts university seminar on the Magic Pipe.
The opener was Seattle’s Flowmotion. I only caught their last 3-4 songs, but I liked them. Kinda of a more rock style jam band. The best part for me was their drummer and drummer/ percussionist combo. Two of the 3-4 songs I saw had some cool extended dual drum solos.
T1G came on right around 9:30. He seemed to play a very similar setlist to the time I saw him a year and a half ago at John Henry’s, but much more energetic… having a pretty packed house at a bigger venue on a Wednesday definitely didn’t hurt the energy. :)
Setlist:
- Forgotten Whales leading into Instrumental Intro Jam
- Jigsaw
- Weasel Potpie leading into Instrumental Jam
- the one with “heaven or heck” in the lyrics
- Dig (with the magic boot)
- Buttmachine (extended)
- Instrumental Jam
- Bananas
- Somewhere Over the Rainbow(with the magic saw)
- One(with card tricks)
- Jam Session with Flowmotion drummers (T1G’s credit card jam)
- …
Great show… I left at about the 90 minute point (it’s been a long week for me so far). If I had to wager a guess, I bet he played “Mash” and/or “The Moon is Disgusting” and/or “Birds” as encores… but that’s only a guess.
And now for some news from That1Guy…
He’s re-issued his first album… the one before Songs in the Key of Beotch called Let’s Hear That1Guy (click pic to find out more):
New animated video for “Mash” made by some ausome aussies at Silo:6…

I had beers…
The last two nights (Feb 6 & 7, 2009) was local Eugene NPR station KLCC’s microbrew festival. I went last night. My wife dropped me off at the fairgrounds after a nice Indian meal (and then picked me up afterwards… she rocks). It was $15 to get in, which included a commemorative (4 oz?) glass and two drink tickets. Additional drinks were $1; so I did the “express admission” which included 12 drinks for $25 total (no price break, but I didn’t have to go back to the drink ticket line).
There were 51 booths with at least 2 beers a piece on tap… so, 12 beers didn’t scratch the surface of all that was offered, but it did pretty good damage. I generally stay away from IPAs, and I like stouts, porters, wheats… Anyway, here’s what I had (not in any particular order… outside of the order they are in the KLCC program):
- 21st Amendment – Hell or High Watermelon Wheat (San Francisco) – this beer was delightful, very subtle watermelon flavor… I love wheat beers in general, and this one would be fantastic in the summer…
- Ace Cider – The Joker Hard Cider (Sebastopol, CA) – high alcohol content, and kind of weak flavors, in my opinion… this one didn’t get past the initial sip. Ace’s pear cider is very good, though.
- Green Mountain – Woodchuck Amber Draft Cider (Middlebury, VT) – a classic for me. I was drinking Woodchuck before I liked beer. The guy at the booth was shocked that I had it before, as it’s new to the Oregon territory.
- Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) – Survival Seven Grain Stout (Portland, OR) – while its name doesn’t suggest, it’s got coffee in it as well. not as strong as (a fave) Oakshire Overcast, it was still very delightful. a friend from work was volunteer pouring this one, too… so it was nice chat amongst the beer fiends.
- Laurelwood – Vanilla Porter (Portland, OR) – nice and delicate. I think by the time of the evening when I had this, I was looking for more vanilla, but it was still very nice
- Ninkasi – Oatis Oatmeal Stout (Eugene, OR) – a local favorite of mine… excellent, and it compares well with one of my favorite beers – Sam Smith’s Oatmeal Stout.
- North Coast – Brother Thelonius Belgian Ale (Fort Bragg, CA) – Named after the jazz piano great, I had had a bottle of this before. It’s good, but you have to be in the right mood… it’s something like 9% alcohol and kicks your butt. I couldn’t drink my whole sample glass… too strong…
- Oakshire – Overcast Espresso Stout (Eugene, OR) – my 2nd fave of the night right behind Young’s DCS. I get this beer a lot at restaurants around town. It’s a gem of Eugene, if you ask me.
- Pyramid – Apricot Ale (Portland, OR) – I’d seen this in stores before, but never tried it. Last night was the perfect time… much more fruit flavor than the watermelon ale (but not as much as Woodchuck). Very good… I don’t think I could do a whole 6-pack of this, but it was definitely tasty.
- Rogue Ales – Chocolate Stout (Newport, OR) – oh, how I wish when Rogue was looking for filling their Controller position they would have allowed me to work from Eugene (rather than move to Newport on the coast). They make great beers, and their chocolate stout is no exception. Like Young’s, Rogue’s chocolate stout is actually made with real chocolate in the batch (some are just called that from the dark color and chocolate maltiness).
- Roots Organic – Chocolate Habañero Stout (Portland, OR) – I had already had my fill of espresso and/or chocolate stouts, but the habañero had me at “hello.” It was a very nice beer with a little spice on the front and much more spice on the back end. I really liked it. Very similar to the Lagunitas Frank Zappa beer I posted about the other day.
- Young’s – Double Chocolate Stout (London, England) – so smooth, creamy & delicious… you get the rolling, settling effect when it comes out of the tap into the glass. mmm…
I will say that I didn’t drink all 4 oz of all of the above beers. Some of them got a sip/gulp and then dumped the rest (mainly because I didn’t want to be totally trashed). Of all of the local (fantastic) beers, my favorite was the Young’s Double Chocolate Stout (from England). It’s always been a favorite of mine, and while the local beers gave it a run for its money, once it touched my lips, I knew it still had my heart.
Two beer posts in a row… yeah, probably a new record
anyway the wind blows is fine with me
Anyway the wind blows
it don’t matter to me
A continuation from this post 6+ months ago… Lagunitas Brewery’s Frank Zappa beer #5… is in my hands (but not quite my mouf yet)…
Behold, the Cruisin’ with Ruben and the Jets Ale*… a tribute to the 40 year anniv of the album of the same name. It’s probably my least favorite Zappa album, but Hot Rats followed shortly (and that one is superb). *– as noted in the Brewed for Thought blog about this beer, he had this as a chocolate pepper stout. My version is an ale. I’m disappointed as the chocolate pepper stouts sounds fantastic, but I think I’ll live.
Update: it is a Chocolate Pepper Stout… I wonder why the label says “ale” in several places and “stout” is nowhere to be found.
Picture provided by Brewed for Thought, as I’m lazy and it’s busy season for me at work:

I’m looking forward to enjoying this on the weekend…
FZ beer 1 was Freak Out! Ale
FZ beer 2 was Kill Ugly Radio Ale (aka for the album Absolutely Free)
FZ beer 3 was Lumpy Gravy Ale
FZ beer 4 was We’re Only In It for the Money Triple Ale
FZ beer #6 should be Uncle Meat, by my count… we shall see.
SC3 @ the Great American Music Hall
Well, I was proven wrong for my naysaying only a week later, the Secret Chiefs 3 have followed up on their promise, and the live DVD is officially set and ready to go. This was posted to the Web of Mimicry store on Friday:
Live at the Great American Music Hall captures Secret Chiefs 3 in concert with what many consider to be the best of their many line-ups in 14 years of playing.
Shot in 2007 at one of the band’s favorite haunts, in San Francisco, this DVD does justice to a group whose live energy usually exceeds the recorded medium. Renowned for their ultra-elaborate CD productions, Secret Chiefs 3 has also garnered a reputation for the power and immediacy of their live shows. Their fanbase has swelled in recent years and grown accustomed to this live incarnation (the Secret Chiefs 3 bootleg scene is thriving), and they demand an official release! Not just some audience-hand-cam and stereo-mic-job thing, this DVD boasts a pro six-camera shoot with live sound mixed by Billy Anderson, with the multi-channel outs mixed for DVD by Trey Spruance and Randall Dunn (producer of Earth, SUNN O))), Kinski, Wolves in the Throne Room, etc). And it comes with a really nice six-panel gatefold digi-pack with original artwork. At the show, Secret Chiefs 3 performs a set of both familiar and as-yet-unreleased music. The line-up includes Ches Smith (Xiu Xiu, Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog), Shahzad Ismaili (who also plays with Graham Haynes, Laurie Anderson, and Tom Waits), Timb Harris (Estradasphere), Rich Doucette, Peijman Kouretchian, and Jai Young Kim.
Live at the Great American Music Hall DVD also includes an award-winning and seriously dimensionally altered 80-minute stop-motion animation feature film directed by Tawd Dorenfeld that uses Secret Chiefs 3’s live show as a soundtrack.
It’s a pre-order for a March 3rd release. Mine’s on order… yay…
Oh, and a side note… the Fol Chen CD out on Asthmatic Kitty (entitled Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune’s Made) is really really fun and rad. It’s poppy-electronic-indie rock goodness. Quirky, yet melodic. Totally a gem in 2009, if you ask me.
