Puscifer Command Central
Maynard James Keenan (aka Major Douche) held a press conference about the upcoming Feb 13-15th Puscifer shows at The Palms Casino in Las Vegas:
Oh, how I wish I could go to Vegas in a few weeks… like, not as much as I wish I were in San Francisco for the Week of Masada in March, but pretty damn close. Pretty… damn…. close…
Shark Remixes & Holy F’s Mia Remix

Last fall, Asthmatic Kitty released My Brightest Diamond‘s Shark Remixes Volume 1 (by Alfred Brown). It is a great remix EP… yet, the initial press release said something about a Vol 2 in Nov and Vol 3 in Dec. Well, our Thanksgiving gift has now arrived…
Shark Remixes, Volume 2 is done by Son Lux. It’s only $1.99 on iTunes for four songs… you can try out two of the tracks for free over at Asthmatic Kitty’s website (right click links below, “Save As”):
- Inside a Boy (remixed by Son Lux)
- To Pluto’s Moon (remixed by Son Lux)
- the other 2 songs are on iTunes
Our Christmas gift (i.e.- Volume 3)… well, maybe March? Whenever it comes out, I’m sure it’ll be great…
EDIT / UPDATE (1/28/09): a 4th volume was just announced, and the four EPs are slated for a hardcopy release in the spring/summer.

And, in true blog fashion, as I’m writing one up I stumble on some other good news…

Canadian live electronic / post rock band of awesomeness, Holy Fuck, have done a remix of Mia‘s “Paper Planes.” You can get a copy of the track over on Nialler9’s blog.
U2 and Radiohead
Not that these bands are lacking of free advertising… but here’s some good news that came out this past week. U2‘s upcoming No Line on the Horizon (due out in March) now has a cover and tracklist…
1. No Line on the Horizon
2. Magnificent
3. Moment of Surrender
4. Unknown Caller
5. I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight
6. Get On Your Boots (streaming at u2.com or on YouTube)
7. Stand Up Comedy
8. Fez – Being Born
9. White as Snow
10. Breathe
11. Cedars of Lebanon
The Amazons also has No Line on the Horizon for pre-order now.

meets
Radiohead‘s guitarist anti-rockstar Jonny Greenwood is recently collaborated with Israeli singer Dudu Tasa on the new single, “What a Day“. The song is streaming over HERE (browser warning: IE only). It’s good, but not like Jonny’s usual fare (i.e. – it’s not like the more experimental Bodysong or There Will Be Blood).
Also in recent directly Radiohead news… EMI/Capitol is re-issuing triple-disc versions (2CD+DVD) of the band’s first three albums (Pablo Honey, The Bends, and OK Computer). There are no previously unreleased tracks on any of these issues, but it will be a more cohesive place for all of the b-sides rather than the glut of import singles and EPs that the band released as “tweeners.” They’re due out in late March.
The original singles up through those on Amnesiac are also being repressed in 180 gram 12″ vinyl. The one for the Drill EP was the one I sprung for… I’d only heard it before in crappy mp3. It’ll be nice in the analog, backwards technology re-issuance. They’re due out in late April.
fright of the conchords
There’s no reason to be afraid of New Zealand’s 4th most popular comedy folk duo. They’re mostly harmless, and they’re back for both a 2nd season on HBO (or eventually on DVD for those non-HBO subscribers like me) and a second album as well.
The Flight of the Conchords… looking… longingly and forlorn…?
As reported in SPIN, the kiwis are releasing their 2nd CD this coming April on Sub Pop Records (April 14th to be exact). Australian singer (and Zero 7 collaborator) Sia guests on a track. Also, if you pre-order the album from Sub Pop, you get the singles right after they air on the TV show (as well as some songs not on the TV show).

Nellie McKay in China (old but new) & 5th Zappa beer (soon)
There are some new-old (or old-new?) Nellie McKay songs on iTunes. Four songs from the never released Live from the Great Wall of China concert that Nellie was involved in back in Sept 2004…
Songs: Dog Song, Manhattan Avenue, I Wanna Get Married, Really
Each song is its “own album” for $0.99. Odd iTunes categorization, but great performances by Nellie. Alicia Keys, Boyz II Men, and Cyndi Lauper also performed at the original concert (wacky line-up indeed). Only Boyz II Men have songs up on iTunes outside of Nellie (as of now). There is video footage of this concert that was intended for a DVD release a while ago, but as far as I know it never got released due to issues with the Chinese government.
No, I made that up. It is Bruce Jenner’s fault, not the Chinese government’s fault. Or maybe Bruce Banner?

Unrelated… the 5th Frank Zappa beer made by Lagunitas Brewing Company (Petaluma, CA) will be a Cruisin’ with Ruben & the Jets ale. Meh, it’s one of my least favorite FZ albums… but I’m a beer drinker and a Frank Zappa collector.
Someone is selling one on eBay now… my local beer shop (the Bier Stein, Eugene Oregon) doesn’t have it yet, but expects it soon.
Ya Hozna!
New in 2009
What I’m looking forward to in 2009?

And some maybes (as far as “maybe they’ll come out” if we’re lucky)… Secret Chiefs 3‘s long awaited-always promised-never delivered Book of Souls, the Daniel Johns / Luke Steel project called Hathaway/Palmer, another Sufjan Stevens state album, Carissa’s Wierd singer Jenn Ghetto‘s 3rd S album, Saviour Machine‘s Legend III:II (8 years in the making?), Celldweller‘s sophomore album, another Peter Mulvey (he’s due), George Hrab‘s 6th album, Incubus guitarist Michael Einziger‘s end.>vacuum project, the debut from Ken Andrews‘ Los Angeles Digital Noise Academy project…
Astral Inter Planet Space Captain Christmas Infinity Voyage
OK, so before the main thrust of this post, here’s a short word from Jack Black…
With that being said, I think “piracy” might only relate to something that’s supposed to be sold and someone steals it? I dunno… regardless… since 2001, indie quirky folkster Sufjan Stevens has made “Songs for Christmas” EPs and distributed them to friends and family. In the fall of 2006, his record label Asthmatic Kitty released the first five volumes in a kick ass EP boxset (for a really great price – – 5 EPs for $14.99):
Since then, he’s done three more volumes… for friends and family. Well, Volumes 6 & 7 haven’t made their way onto the internets, yet*… but Songs for Christmas, Volume VIII: Astral Inter Planet Space Captain Christmas Infinity Voyage has been made available by one of Sufjan’s friends and/or family. So… I guess we’re all included in his friend’s list this year. Click the picture/tracklist below to go to another blogger’s post who has download links at the ready:
*– By “yet,” I mean… if you find Vol 6 or 7, tell me, yo! :)
And, kids… just like when Volumes 1-3 got leaked in early 2006… when the official product comes out, you gotta support the artists (with your wallet, not your mouse button)! I know I’ll buy it if it comes out… but until then, enjoy it as a Christmas present from Sufjan’s friend and/or family who likes to re-gift.
Happy Festivus tomorrow!

Porcupine Tree News

Hot off the heels of Steven Wilson’s excellent Insurgentes solo album, this was posted on Porcupine Tree‘s blog about a new PT record in 2009:
Writing for the next Porcupine Tree studio record is well underway, with the band recently spending 2 weeks secluded in the English countryside working on new tracks. Recording of these pieces and a new 35 minute Steven Wilson song cycle is due to start in February, and tour plans are being put in place from September onwards following release of the new album.
I hope it’s as good as Insurgentes or at least much better than PT’s last two “band” offerings.
Steven Wilson is also going out on tour with Aviv Geffen next month:
16th Jan – Rotunda Club, Krakow, Poland
17th Jan – Postbanhof, Berlin, Germany
18th Jan – Knust, Hamburg, Germany
20th Jan – Luxor, Koln, Germany
21st Jan – Melkweg, Amsterdam, Netherlands
22nd Jan – Ampere, Munich, Germany
24th Jan – Cafe de la Danse, Paris, France
27th Jan – Proud Galleries, London, UK
The band will be the full Blackfield line up (with Tomer Z, Seffy Efrati, and Eran Mittelman). There will be a few Blackfield songs performed, but most of the songs will be from Aviv’s forthcoming debut English language solo album (produced by Trevor Horn).

Kim Taylor – I Feel Like A Fading Light (vinyl)
Cincinnati folky singer-songwriter Kim Taylor has a voice that hearkens back to another Cincinnatian Karin Bergquist of Over the Rhine. Her 2007 album I Feel Like a Fading Light was a great piece of music. It just got released on vinyl with new cover art:
check it out: http://kim-taylor.net/
If you are one of the first 25 people, you get her new hardcopy EP The Greatest Story for free. I think even past the first 25, you get the digital version of her new EP for free.
Oh, and two sidenotes / news stories…
Shara Worden / My Brightest Diamond has covered David Bowie‘s “Nature Boy” for the I’ll Stay ‘Til After Christmas compilation. You can get it on the iTunes or Amazon digital. In iTunes, just search for “I’ll Stay ‘Til After Christmas”… a’doy!
dredg‘s long-awaited 4th album (by me at least) is due out March 24, 2009. Their last album, Catch Without Arms, is utterly brilliant. It was their 3rd album, out in 2005… I found out about them by accident (they were an opener for Coheed & Cambria and the Blood Brothers and I barely made it in time to see them). I feel in love with dredg‘s sound almost immediately. Think rock that touches on prog with a great singer and an ethereal slide guitar. Check out “Ode to the Sun,” “Sang Real,” or “Stone By Stone” on your internet box.
Holy F**k in-studio & Derek Webb news
It’s not that I intend to bring together two disparate artists for my music news post. I mean, I surely do love it… but it’s usually just a function of me liking way too much music, and news comes in to me in spurts that are as controllable as a trying to plug the holes in a colander. This post is brought to you by a foul-named (but primarily instrumental) Canadian electronic band that totally pwns (Holy Fuck) and a contemporary Christian artist for whom I still have a lot of respect despite philosophical differences (Derek Webb).
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Holy Fuck first… needless to say, Holy Fuck is in the list of artists that whenever I hear news about them… up it goes. They’ve been an obsession since late ‘05 / early ‘06, and they just keep gettin’ better. They make what’s best referred to as “live electronic” music. They’ve got a 23 minute in-studio performance on UK’s Channel M. Due to WordPress video posting capabilities, I am unable to do the streaming thing (it only seems to work for me for YouTube). So, click the picture to be taken to Channel M’s website:
>> Holy Fuck – In Session on Channel M <<
They play The Pulse, Royal Gregory, Frenchy’s, interview segment, Super Inuit, and Lovely Allen.
Holy Fuck’s albums are rad, instrumental grooves of deliciousness – – two self-titled LPs, along with a self-titled EP. The 2nd self-titled album is the best, IMO. You can pick it up from the Beggars Group (USA) or Young Turks (UK). They’ve also got some split 12″ vinyl. One last year with the band Celebration (no longer available), and one this year with Foals where they each cover the others track (it’s on vinyl – but you can DL the mp3s here). You can also check Holy Fuck out on the MySpaces.

Derek Webb, formerly of the folky / hip-with-the-college crowd CCM septet Caedmon’s Call, has continued to make compelling music (which is the opposite that Caedmon’s Call has done without him, IMO). Anyway, per a recent emailing, he’s working on his follow-up to The Ringing Bell.
He’s collaborating with long time friend and former Caedmon’s Call bandmate Josh Moore on what is rumored to be a more experimental, electronic album. Teasing with programmed and decidedly more ‘inorganic’ elements, the album called Stockholm Syndrome is shaping up to be Derek’s “most ambitious album to date.”
We shall see. It’s expected out by May 2009. More info on Derek at derekwebb.com.

Opeth “Burden” single
Opeth released an internet-only single today for “Burden” (from the Watershed album). Sigh… where has the metal gone? Anyway, this single is definitely more in the non-metal / Damnation-era style – – which is fine, I suppose. I only bought the b-sides: “Mellotron Heart” and a cover of Alice in Chains‘ “Would?”

“Mellotron Heart” is a reworking of their first single, “Porcelain Heart,” but on mellotron and mini-moog. It’s pleasant, but mellower than the original – – which was mellow to start.
The cover of “Would?” is a surprisingly true to the original version of the Alice in Chains hit. From Opeth, I think I expected more re-working for a cover version. No offense, Mikael, but if I wanted to listen to a straight-up version of “Would?,” I’d put on Alice in Chains’ Dirt.
They should have made this the cover art…
Anyway, the “Burden” single can be obtained from the iTunes or (I’m sure) other music retailers on the Intertubes.
Also out on iTunes today (which I haven’t vouched for yet)… a new one from Kevin Max, a many artist collaboration called “Price of Silence” with Jurassic 5’s Chali 2Na (I’m sure other big names, too – – I just heard of it from his MySpace bulletin), and the new DM Stith album (he’s done some great work with My Brightest Diamond, Sufjan Stevens, and other Asthmatic Kitty artists).
Ellery, Ric Hordinski & Free Holiday Music
As mentioned around Thanksgiving, Ric Hordinski (guitarist extraordinaire from Cincinnati) is having his annual holiday show with pop duo Ellery (Dec 12th @ Ric’s Monastery Studio in Cincinnati).

Well, same as last year, Ellery is giving away their holiday EP for free. It’s called December Days. Last year’s was a 3 song EP. This year has an additional fourth track, the brand new collaboration with Ric Hordinski called “We Can Dream Tonight.”
Get it here: http://www.ellerymusic.com/downloads/decemberdaysep2008.zip
It’s free, yo!
he shouts… he scores!
From MovieWeb (thanks for the heads-up David!):
Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have set out to create one of 2009’s greatest films with their upcoming Crank 2: High Voltage. Not only did they hire Corey Haim for one of the most important supporting roles in the highly anticipated Jason Statham sequel, they have also nabbed legendary musician Mike Patton to score the entire soundtrack. Earlier today while conducting an exclusive interview with Danny DeVito, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star let it slip that his friend was currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on the music for the film.
DeVito didn’t quite know how to describe the score, but did hint that there may be a song track that contains actual lyrics and singing by Patton. The former front man for both Mr. Bungle and Faith No More, who in recent years has put out an unstoppable flow of amazing music in nearly every genre, most recently headed down the road to scoring films with his work on the short A Perfect Place, and he recently contributed lyrics and vocals to the Marc Streitenfeld score for Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies. Crank 2: High Voltage will be the musician’s first foray into scoring an entire feature length film.
Patton has a busy year coming up. Not only will he be releasing the Crank 2: High Voltage score, he will also be releasing Mondo Cane, a record of Italian pop songs from the 50s and 60s and the first Crudo album, which sees him reteaming up with his Lovage sidekick Dan the Automator for some crazy hip-hop pop music.
Mike Patton’s A Perfect Place score for the short film of the same name is among my faves of 2008. So… yeah… a feature length score by Patton would be coo-el.
Yes, my man-crush on all things Patton usually runs at high levels.
Ric Hordinski back with Over the Rhine… one night only
I knew about this a bit ago, but don’t know why I never blogged it… anyway, guitar master & production wizard Ric Hordinski (aka Monk) is playing a one-off show with his former band, Over the Rhine, at their annual get together at the Taft Theater in Cincinnati, OH. This is one of those shows that I’m totally bummed I’ll be missing. Ric is an amazing guitarist, and Over the Rhine’s sound has been missing a ton of what I loved ever since he left in 1996/1997. I also assume that original drummer Brian Kelley will be playing with the band, too. But I haven’t heard either way///
Anyway, one night only… Over the Rhine with Ric Hordinski, December 19th, 2008 at the Taft Theater, Cincinnati, OH. Check out http://overtherhine.com/ for more info.
Ric is also doing his annual holiday show at his monastery studio with Ellery (my new favorite husband-wife duo from Cincinnati). Ellery’s 2006 debut album (Lying Awake) and very recent EP (You Did Everything Right) are among my favs in that genre that includes singing*.
*– Yeah, this year is my first year with more instrumental intake than vocal… alas, I still dig me some folk-pop stylings… especially that of Tasha & Justin Golden (i.e.- Ellery).
The Ric Hordinski & Ellery get together is the week prior (December 12th):
– Doors open at 6:00pm, with caroling at 6:30pm
– Tickets are $15, only 100 seats available!
MBD “Tainted Love” and Streaming Concert
Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond) is on a new covers compilation, Guilt By Association Vol 2. Also on the compilation are Matt Pond PA and Kaki King (two other artists I like). For the complete tracklist, go here. MBD’s version of Soft Cell‘s “Tainted Love” is on the compilation, but also available HERE for FREE. Yes, free as in “free.”
Also, filed under “late to the dance”… MBD’s Seattle Triple Door concert on Wed the 19th was streaming over on Synclive.com. Well, it’s no longer streaming (except in time-lapse continuum locales), but the entire hour and 58 minutes of Clare & the Reasons (opener) and My Brightest Diamond are archived. Go here (click the Synclive picture below):
Tonight is MBD in Eugene… so… it’s gonna be an AWESOMELY heels-over-head* DAY!!! I’ll have pics and a review of the show posted by Sunday at the latest…

*– no puppies were harmed in this (I hope)
