dredg fall tour

Modern progressive rock group dredg is hitting the road again. Not much news other than that, but if you forgot, they put out the fantastic The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion – aka my favorite record last year. I saw them twice last year, and both shows were amazing. Check them out if they’re coming near your town:

Note: As previously reported here, this album came out in a digital version in December 2009. So this is the physical edition’s debut! The tracklist is as follows, and is likely differently mixed/mastered from the version nine months ago…

2. Lost and Found
3. American Child
4. Anchor Down
5. Open Wide
6. Do You Ever Feel Lonely
7. If I Am Wrong

Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 1 #7
One a month in 2010…
Derek Webb‘s Democracy Vol 1 is rolling along… This month, it’s “Power of Love” by Huey Lewis & the News. It’s a bit loudly mixed and an odd choice of instrumentation, but much less camp and dated than the original; so Derek gets “kudos” from me on that front. :)
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 1 was part of the Stockholm Syndrome pre-order package, but you can still join in over at the DW store and get the following (plus future releases):
- January: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
- February: Coldplay – Fix You
- March: Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’
- April: Gnarls Barkley – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul
- May: Sufjan Stevens – Chicago
- June: U2 – Where the Streets Have No Name
- July: Huey Lewis & the News – Power of Love
Democracy Vol. 1 is the first in a series of subscription based albums of cover songs that Derek will be recording annually, starting January 2010. Those who participate will not only receive the exclusive album, but will democratically decide what songs Derek will record.
Ever wished you could hear Derek cover your favorite Beatles song? Or Backstreet Boys song? Or even re-record your favorite old Caedmon’s Call song? Here’s your chance. Songs will be nominated and voted down to 12. Derek will record them (demo quality) and deliver them digitally (320kbps MP3s), one song per month for 12 months. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb!

So, Expand from Dave Douglas & Keystone – the second in the Spark of Being trilogy – is now up for pre-order. Spark of Being is Dave’s recent collaboration with experimental filmmaker Bill Morrison (read more here). As a cool option, it’s going to be made available on vinyl – a first for Greenleaf Music.
I’ve got mine on pre-order… boxset and now vinyl. Oh, and once pre-ordered… you get to download it, even though its release date is August 24th.
Nellie McKay – indie film & WBGO interview
Update: You can now order Home Sweet Mobile Home on Amazon

To piggy back off of this recent post about Nellie McKay‘s upcoming album, Home Sweet Mobile Home (out Sept 28), online music source 24bit added…
Before the album drops this fall, however, McKay will record music for and star as struggling New York City singer-songwriter Ramona in Downtown Express, an independent feature film in which her character falls in love with a Russian musician visiting town for a month on a Juilliard scholarship, played by real-life virtuoso violinist Philippe Quint.
She also did an in-studio appearance at WBGO (streaming audio link). She does some tunes and is interviewed by WBGO’s Michael Bourne. It was posted over at nelliemckay.com only yesterday (7/18/2010); so I assume it’s recent – even though it seems very Normal As Blueberry Pie-centric.
Nellie McKay Announces New Album ‘Home Sweet Mobile Home’ (Sept 28 / Verve)
Update: You can now order Home Sweet Mobile Home on Amazon
This just in about Nellie McKay‘s forthcoming album…
NELLIE MCKAY TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘HOME SWEET MOBILE HOME’ ON SEPTEMBER 28th (VERVE)
Singer-songwriter Nellie McKay’s fifth album, ‘Home Sweet Mobile Home,’ will be released on Verve Records this September. Her second album for the label follows her 2009 release ‘Normal As Blueberry Pie – A Tribute to Doris Day,’ which was selected by The New York Times, Huffington Post and The Village Voice as one of the best of the year.
‘Home Sweet Mobile Home’ is McKay’s first album of all-original material since 2007’s ‘Obligatory Villagers,’ and has the musical wanderlust, lyrical playfulness and sharp point of view that has characterized her music since her breakthrough debut ‘Get Away From Me.’ Songs from the new project were recently debuted during her NYC engagement at Feinstein’s, and the New York Post noted that “songs like “Bodega” and “Caribbean Time” feature whimsical humor and social commentary that blended in beautifully alongside the standards from the Blueberry Pie album.”
The new album, produced by McKay and Robin Pappas, was recorded in Los Angeles, New York, Jamaica and the Pocono Mountains and, even more than her previous albums, combines diverse musical moods and cultures.
“I have no idea how this album happened,” says Nellie. “I guess I was looking for a sound to reflect our shrinking world and the bleed of culture crossing all kinds of borders.” Reviewing a recent McKay show, Stephen Holden from The New York Times described her as a “vocal chameleon,” and that varied musical palette is used to great effect on the 13 songs on ‘Home Sweet Mobile Home.’
McKay has released four critically acclaimed records and appeared on Broadway (winning a Theatre World Award for her role in the revival of ‘The Threepenny Opera’) and on film (acting and singing in ‘P.S. I Love You’). She also wrote and performed the song score for the Rob Reiner film ‘Rumor Has It.’
The Chase Brock Experience recently produced a ballet of her third album, ‘Obligatory Villagers,’ while Nellie is currently playing opposite violin prodigy Philippe Quint in the independent film ‘Downtown Express’ and contributing to the soundtrack for the upcoming Martin Scorsese HBO series ‘Boardwalk Empire.’
Susan Enan house concert review (from last night) to be posted later today…
Celldweller *Wish Upon a Blackstar* Chapter 3
The pre-order for Celldweller‘s Wish Upon a Blackstar: Chapter 3 went live yesterday. The third chapter (of five total) will feature the songs “The Lucky One” and “Tainted.”
Chapter 3 will be available for download in several bundles (including a deluxe edition for $4.99) on July 27th from Celldweller’s FiXT store. The deluxe edition features instrumentals, demos, and commentaries.
After all five chapters are released, I expect there will be a full-length album (and hopefully CD) issue.
Over the Rhine’s The Long Surrender (due 1/11/11)
As posted on overtherhine.com…
Our immense thanks to all of you who helped make the new Over the Rhine record a reality. It’s been christened THE LONG SURRENDER and is currently being mastered.
Tentative release date: 1.11.11.All those who contributed will receive THE LONG SURRENDER well before the official release date, with extras. Look for a complete (long, rambling) update letter next week with much more, but suffice it to say, for now, our experience with producer Joe Henry and his cast of conjurers was nothing short of incredible.
Can’t wait for you to take the ride/hear for yourself.
Perfect release date, if you ask me!
Secret Chiefs 3 in the studio
Well, it’s official… Secret Chiefs 3 are in the studio. Per a tweet from Brooklyn-based Studio G / Joel Hamilton, “Secret Chiefs 3 with Joel at Studio G. Rock never confused you so well.” And here’s a picture (from Ches Smith’s FB) to prove that Trey Spruance is there, too. :)

Book of Souls by year’s end? Well, I ain’t hatcheting my counts before they chicken, but I’d say it’s possible…
Brandon Boyd of Incubus – The Wild Trapeze
Incubus is heading back into the studio… but this just in…
With a career that’s spanned almost two decades, six albums, a handful of EP’s and DVD’s and a Greatest Hits album which has chronicled it all under his belt as lead singer of the multi-platinum selling band Incubus, Brandon Boyd just released his first solo album entitled, The Wild Trapeze. It’s available for fairly cheap ($10 on CD) with instant download at www.thewildtrapeze.com. The album is also exclusively available digitally on iTunes, et cetera…
Per Brandon…
“This group of songs was born of a very different process than the many my band and I have been employing for our almost two decades at work now. The Wild Trapeze began as pot induced meanderings on my dusty acoustic guitar while Incubus was off of the road, and has slowly been morphing into things that I originally could never have imagined. So much of my identity, both personally and creatively has been attached to and related to Incubus. For better or worse! And I do believe that every person in every corner of the world asks themselves at some point on their ride, ‘Who am I…today?’ The Wild Trapeze is an exercise in self reliance.”
Lofty… I’m sure he’s biased. ;) I’m downloading it now… looking forward to it…

Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 1 #6
One a month in 2010…
Derek Webb‘s Democracy Vol 1 is rolling along… This month, it’s “Where the Streets Have No Name” by some Irish band. Derek has a long history of covering U2 in concert… love this acoustic take on a classic. Thanks, Derek!!
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 1 was part of the Stockholm Syndrome pre-order package, but you can still join in over at the DW store and get the following (plus future releases):
- January: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps

- May: Sufjan Stevens – Chicago
- June: U2 – Where the Streets Have No Name
If you missed the Derek & Jennifer Knapp tour, check out my review and photos from the Portland Oregon show at the Aladdin Theater on April 27th.

Ty Tabor’s Trip Magnet & Wally Farkas solo
Two new digital releases showed up yesterday (thanks to Facebook status updates from both gents), both related and both excellent…
Wally Farkas, guitarist of the late great Galactic Cowboys, is putting the final touches on his debut solo album. He’s released the single “Better Than Before” from his forthcoming debut, Past Due (due later this year). This self-penned track shows just one side of what will be a diverse debut album. Also included is the song “Loving Kind,” which was originally recorded by the Peter Green-era of the original Fleetwood Mac and written by one of their brilliant and extremely overlooked guitarists, Danny Kirwan. On these tracks… Wally Farkas – Vocals/Guitar, Ty Tabor (King’s X) – Guitar, Alan Doss (Galactic Cowboys) – Bass, and Darwin Keys (Pushmonkey) – Drums. It’s available on 320 kbps mp3 at Molken Music for only $2.50.
And while you’re there at Molken… Ty Tabor, of King’s X and many side projects, just put out a five-song EP from the upcoming Trip Magnet release. This is a different side of Ty Tabor…somewhere between Xenuphobe (his ambient project with Wally Farkas) and his regular rockin’ studio/solo albums. For a melancholy trip into freakatude, check out Ty’s seventh solo release. An unusual outing for Ty Tabor, this release contains over fourteen minutes of instrumental music, as well as some Ty’s rock vocal numbers. Ty Tabor – Vocals, Guitars, Bass and Randy St. John – Drums. It’s available on 320 kbps mp3 at Molken Music for $7.99.
For just slightly over $10… some great new music!
George Hrab :: Trebuchet
George Hrab‘s 6th album, Trebuchet, is now officially out. It’s available in its entirety on his podcast feed (actually many science & skeptical thinking podcasts’ feeds)…
Geologic Podcast #170 (the whole album)
Buy the physical CD or mp3 from CDBaby. It’s also available on iTunes, but I think CDBaby is a better company, in the long run. Support indie music!
Infamous Love Songs :: Over the Rhine & Cincinnati Ballet
I’m not in Cincinnati anymore… but part of my heart is there, especially with folksy-pop duo Over the Rhine. They are collaborating with the Cincinnati Ballet. It is a ways off, but tickets on-sale now for next April’s shows (2011)…

Shedding Light on New Sufjan Stevens LP
From Exclaim.ca…
The National’s Bryce Dessner Sheds Light on New Sufjan Stevens LP
6/10/2010 By Ian Gormely
Sufjan Stevens’s Axl Rose-like recording pace is enough to get even casual fans wondering if the guy’s got another record in him following the triumph of 2005’s Illinois. In the five year’s since its release, he’s managed to produce an outtakes disc, an album of Christmas tunes and even a tribute to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. But he also admitted his 50 State project was just a promotional gimmick. And despite sneaking some new tracks into set lists last fall, in November he told Exclaim! that “I don’t really have as much faith in my work as I used to,” leaving a proper follow-up looking ever more doubtful.
Well, good news, kids: according to The National’s Bryce Dessner, Stevens is indeed hard at work on a new album and is currently recording in the band’s Brooklyn studio.
“We’ve played on some of the tracks and been listening to some of the stuff as he’s been working on it,” Dessner told Exclaim! in a recent interview.
Dessner, who described Stevens as “very solitary in what he does” and “one of my closest friends” didn’t want to reveal too much about the new as-yet-untitled Stevens album. But when asked if the new material sounded like Stevens’s older records, Dessner offered a resounding “no.”
“It’s going to be incredible,” he adds. “It’s going to probably blow people’s minds.”
I consider this to be most excellent news… any new Sufie on the horizon is a-OK with me.
Fiona Apple “So Sleepy”
As reported by Paste…
Fiona Apple recorded a song for Chickens in Love, a full-length album due out sometime in the near future from Dave Eggers’ nationwide nonprofit, 826LA. The album is a collection of 12 songs whose lyrics were written by 826LA students and then covered by Los Angeles-based artists. According to their Facebook page, the songs are products of songwriting workshops with the kids and musicians, and all proceeds from record sales will go back into the programs.
“So Sleepy,” a cover of 826LA’s The Gummy Bears, is Apple’s and Jon Brion’s contribution to Chickens in Love. You can stream it and other tracks by the likes of She & Him, Cold War Kids, Dum Dum Girls, Crystal Antlers, the Pity Party and more on their Facebook page, and you can pre-order the record here.
My Brightest Diamond with Blind Boys of Alabama
If you head over to the Asthmatic Kitty website, they have a streaming video of My Brightest Diamond (aka Shara Worden) singing “Jesus” with the Blind Boys of Alabama on Australian TV…

http://asthmatickitty.com/news.php?newsID=588
As you can see from the video, she’s about to pop… so, I guess the next project she has been working on is about to come out. I don’t know if the album… um… er… child is a boy or a girl, but here’s hoping it’s a healthy and happy baby diamond.
Other news snippet… Tori Amos is releasing a live DVD from her 2009 Artist’s Den performance in NYC. It’s available for pre-order via Barnes & Noble at this time… not elsewhere (yet).
