Mike Patton as a Decepticon
Thanks to Stubbadub for rescooping the MovieWeb scoop, because otherwise I wouldn’t have heard about it…
Apparently Mike Patton is confirmed as being the voice of a Decepticon in the upcoming sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. He will be one of the seven pieces that form Devastator, likely Mixmaster. For more info, check out the MovieWeb post.
Meh, I don’t know much about Transformers mythology, but I guess I’ll at least Redbox the movie when it comes out simply due to Mike Patton’s involvement. He’s been getting a lot of movie-related gigs lately… Firecracker, Will Smith’s I Am Legend, A Perfect Place score, and the Crank 2 soundtrack (out soon). This year also “promises” another Fantômas record, the debut of Mondo Cane (Mike’s 50s Italian-pop band), at least one more John Zorn/Moonchild Trio collaboration, and maybe even Crudo (the Dan the Automator collaboration).
It may be a banner Patton year, if everything gets legs underneath…

Crank 2: High Voltage
The Crank 2: High Voltage Soundtrack comes out April 7th… Mike Patton is all over it like stink on a monkey…
Listen to some snippets over on the MySpaces.
Yeah, I’ll probably buy the CD and never see the movie. :)

Seinfeld + Curb / Reptet Tour / OTC Tour / Jurassic 5 spin-off

Entertainment Weekly reported recently that Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards will have appearances in multiple episodes of (co-Seinfeld creator) Larry David‘s Curb Your Enthusiasm this season. Yay!

One of my favorite jazz bands from Seattle, Reptet (part of the Monktail Creative Music Concern) is hitting the road again this spring.
March 12th – Mississippi Pizza – Portland, OR
March 13th – The Stage Door – Mt. Shasta, CA
March 14th – Divided Sky – S. Lake Tahoe, CA
March 15th – The Zephyr Lounge – Reno, NV
March 16th – Don Quixote’s – Santa Cruz, CA
March 17th – Delta of Venus – Davis, CA
March 18th -Amnesia Bar – San Francisco, CA
March 19th – Cozmic Pizza, Eugene, OR
March 20th – Triple Door (Musiquarium) – Seattle, WA
I’m bummed, as when they’ll be here in Eugene, I’ll be up in their neck of the woods in Seattle. And when they’re back in Seattle the next day, I already got Spinal Tap tickets at the Paramount in Seattle. “Boo” for too many things on the same day. Anyway, they put on a great show. Check ’em out… it’s fun, frolicky, goof-off jazz wonderment.

One of my favorite, now-defunct rap groups Jurassic 5 has a new spin-off. Solo albums first by Cut Chemist, Chali 2Na, and DJ Nu-Mark… Akil the MC has one in the works, too… Now Marc7 and Zakir (aka Soup) have formed a new group called Portable Payback. Sounds pretty smooth – which fits in with 7even & Soup’s style in J5.

oh, sweet… Futurama’s on…
“Good news everyone…”
OK… so, Futurama might come back to TV. As was reported on Paste’s blog…
After being treated like a red-headed stepchild and mismanaged by the bumbling Fox network, Futurama, the sometimes uneven sci-fi comedy developed by Matt Groening, may return to the station’s line-up after all. The announcement comes by way of Billy West, who voiced Professor Farnsworth, Fry and Zapp Brannigan. [Read more over at Paste.]
Geeks who’d rather watch Futurama than do other things rejoice everywhere (warning: that link, while humorous, is not necessarily suitable for work). Futurama had four seasons on Fox before being canceled. Their run on Comedy Central’s Adult Swim and their recent straight-to-DVD movies have kept the dream alive, and as of now may make returning to primetime a good idea for Fox.

Bender’s Big Score / The Beast with a Billion Backs
Bender’s Game / Into the Wild Green Yonder
Speaking of geeks, also on Paste’s blog, Leonardo DiCaprio may bring back War Games (that 1983 chess-meets-world-destruction-meets-Keds movie that launched Matthew Broderick). Cool…
fright of the conchords
There’s no reason to be afraid of New Zealand’s 4th most popular comedy folk duo. They’re mostly harmless, and they’re back for both a 2nd season on HBO (or eventually on DVD for those non-HBO subscribers like me) and a second album as well.
The Flight of the Conchords… looking… longingly and forlorn…?
As reported in SPIN, the kiwis are releasing their 2nd CD this coming April on Sub Pop Records (April 14th to be exact). Australian singer (and Zero 7 collaborator) Sia guests on a track. Also, if you pre-order the album from Sub Pop, you get the singles right after they air on the TV show (as well as some songs not on the TV show).

PS- the new 3rd -gen Prius looks freakin’ rad…
Flight of the Conchords – 2nd season premiere (online)
The first episode of the second season of the New Zealand comedy Flight of the Conchords has premiered a month early on Funny or Die.
From Paste:
In the second season opener, Bret and Jemaine are quick to fire their affable manager, Murray. After the addition and swift subtraction of a new band member last season, Murray has spent much of his time with the Flight of the Conchords reject, who formed a new and rather popular band that Murray manages, Crazy Dogs. But the boys bounce back, scoring a job writing a jingle for a women’s-only organic toothpaste. In a Conchord first, Murray sings a solo ditty after Jemaine and Bret leave his (brand new, huge!) office. The tune is pretty painful, but overall the episode is predictably hilarious considering the very talented sources.
The show returns to the regular airwaves on HBO on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 10 p.m. EST, but you can watch it now at Funny or Die (click link below):

Prop 8: The Musical
All the buzz today on my RSS feeder… then I finally watched it and saw why there was such a buzz…
Written (by Marc Shaiman) in one day, recorded the music the next day, and shot in a day… here is Prop 8: The Musical featuring Jack Black (as Jesus) with Neil Patrick Harris, John C. Reilly, Andy Richter, Maya Rudolph, Margaret Cho, Rashida Jones and others:

Flight of the Conchords – Live at Amoeba

Bret & Jemaine are Flight of the Conchords (formerly New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo). A 52-minute in-store video from Amoeba Records (from April ’08)…

Nailing Your Wife (with Nathan Fillion & Aria Giovanni)
OK… not suitable for work, though not porn… it’s a spoof with a somewhat predictable, but gruesome ending. It stars Nathan Fillion (from Firefly, Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Drive, Dr Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog, Desperate Housewives, etc) and Aria Giovanni (from porn). It was directed by James Gunn (from directory-type things, I imagine).

Bill Maher’s Religulous

(click for larger poster images)
Well, I saw Bill Maher & Larry Charles‘ Religulous yesterday afternoon… and while it was the third weekend in theaters, there were more people in attendance than the opening weekend of Expelled (same theater in Eugene, same time of day). Hmmm…
Anyway, funny funny funny movie. Of course, considering the subject matter, there’s a wealth of comedic opportunity. While it is primarily making fun of religion by talking down at its followers; well, there are some good points made. Obviously, I’m biased, though… I like Bill Maher, and I tend to side with him in many areas. Meh… sue me.
Check it out if it’s playing near you, or when it hits the DVD shelves.
If you like Bill Maher, you can get his HBO show Real Time for free as a podcast… check it out here (iTunes link).

PS- sidenote / unrelated…
Fox News has nothing better to talk about than magazine touch-ups, as they are effectively on the wrong side on the issues when it comes to the constituents… might as well talk about magazine close-ups of former beauty queens:
Jerry Seinfeld & Bill Gates
Sufjan Stevens & Kevin Smith
Unrelated news…
Sufjan Stevens (pictured befro) is lending some music to Natalie Portman‘s directorial debut, EVE, due out in early 2009. By “lending,” the Paste article probably means “exchanged the right for cold, hard cash,” which is quite different from the standard definition of “lending”… unless the whole banking scandal of ’07 created a rip in the space-time-webster’s-definitional continuum. Or maybe he really lent it. Speaking of Suffie, why hasn’t he released anything since the Xmas box of ’06? Is he wrapping up his eastern states dodeca-boxset?

Clerks’ silentman-director, Kevin Smith‘s got a new Seth Rogen / Elizabeth Banks, R-rated vehicle coming out in late October called Zach & Miri Make a Porno. Here’s the red-band trailer (click the pic to go to the website with the trailer)… don’t worry, outside of language & innuendo, there’s no “porno” in the trailer:
It comes out October 31st or some dcate along those lines…

Bill Maher on Larry King re: Religion
Bill Maher & Larry Charles’ religious comedy Religulous comes out October 3rd. It was supposed to come out in June (I mentioned way back in April during my review of Expelled).
Bill Maher was recently on Larry King…
Part1 – Also available for download at the RDF (warning: 17.5M)
Part2 – Q&A: Rick Warren, environmentalism, stimulus checks, etc…
Part3 – more Q&A: more religion & politics, cockiness, marriage, etc…
Best interchange from the Religulous clips (in Part 1)…
“It worries me that people are running my country who think, who believe, in a talking snake.” – Bill Maher
“You don’t have to pass an I.Q. test to be in the Senate, though.” – Senator Mark Pryor [AR-D]
*SIGH*
“Why can’t God just defeat the Devil and get rid of evil? Because then there’s no story… and no reason to pass the plate.” – Bill Maher
What we really need is a dense ecumenical bandana.
The Bad Veins’ Daytrotter Session
In pre-Bad Veins news… Seth Green (aka Oz aka Scott aka Chris Griffin aka Robot Chicken) is going to be in the upcoming Heroes season as a comic book geek (or so says Paste’s blog).
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
OK, now on to the lovely Daytrotter Sessions news… The Bad Veins, a fantastic lofi-meets-songwriter, indie rock duo from Cincinnati, is the latest installment from the Daytrotter in-studio sessions. Four songs, live in-studio… FOR FREE.

A bunch of interview vlogs on Uncensored Interviews
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing The Bad Veins a couple of times when I stomped around Cincinnati. Very fun songs, well written, indie cred… the may blow up soon, if their suitors in NYC or elsewhere come through…
Past Daytrotter Sessions I’ve blogged about (and dug):

A Musical Commentary to a Musical ?!
Wait, why didn’t I know this before? There are two commentaries to Joss Whedon‘s brilliant Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog DVD… and one of the commentaries is a musical, in and of itself. Hell yeah!
RAD! We just got it in the mail today (thank you, Amazon wishlist feature), and we are sooooo watching it this weekend…
