Bill Maher’s Religulous

Well, I saw Bill Maher & Larry Charles‘ Religulous yesterday afternoon… and while it was the third weekend in theaters, there were more people in attendance than the opening weekend of Expelled (same theater in Eugene, same time of day). Hmmm…
Anyway, funny funny funny movie. Of course, considering the subject matter, there’s a wealth of comedic opportunity. While it is primarily making fun of religion by talking down at its followers; well, there are some good points made. Obviously, I’m biased, though… I like Bill Maher, and I tend to side with him in many areas. Meh… sue me.
Check it out if it’s playing near you, or when it hits the DVD shelves.

It turns out that the late-night comic is no icon of rationality himself. In fact, he is a fervent advocate of pseudoscience. The night before his performance on Conan O’Brien, Mr. Maher told David Letterman — a quintuple bypass survivor — to stop taking the pills that his doctor had prescribed for him. He proudly stated that he didn’t accept Western medicine. On his HBO show in 2005, Mr. Maher said: “I don’t believe in vaccination. . . . Another theory that I think is flawed, that we go by the Louis Pasteur [germ] theory.” He has told CNN’s Larry King that he won’t take aspirin because he believes it is lethal and that he doesn’t even believe the Salk vaccine eradicated polio.”
I haven’t seen his movie, and don’t plan to see it. It’s obvious propaganda.
Yeah, I know that… hence the “I tend to side with him in many areas.” His stance on western medicine is not one of the areas in which I side with him. Nor are some of his Libertarian stances.
It may be propaganda. It’s also comedy. Obvious wealth of cases for said comedy in the field of religion…
Religion drives people crazy. Talking snake, virgin birth, walking on water, big boat with a bunch of animals (enough to repopulate the world) in a big rainstorm, offering up your daughters to the town to rape instead of the town raping angels… hmmm… yeah, crazy.
