McKay, Porcupine Tree, Mulvey & Bazan news

6th Aug 09 (Thu) Leave a comment

Music news that I care about seems to be hitting often lately…

Nellie McKay‘s album that was supposed to be outlast fall,” will finally be out “this fall.”  No album name, but we at least have a street date – October 13th.  There’s not much more content over at the Direct Current Music website; so I hope they are right on this one… .COM, .NET, and .ORG have failed to provide any corroboration.  I hope “this fall” doesn’t turn into “next fall“… yet again.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Porcupine Tree just put their newest one, The Incident (due out 9/15 in the U.S.), up for pre-order.  Much like Steven Wilson’s Insurgentes, this one has a deluxe edition that would make the Pope curse.  It looks freakin’ gorgeous (and huge)…

On the pre-order page there’s a video of PT frontman Steven Wilson talking about what’s to be included.  Oh, it’s a’spensive, but it makes sense if you’ve ever read this “1,000 True Fans” article by Kevin Kelly.  Not to say that only the “true fans” will buy it, but, well… anyway, the article is a good read…

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

One of my favorite singer-songwriters Peter Mulvey is coming through the PacNW in November.  One Portland date that I may try to make, and one Eugene date that I will make.  He’s also got a new one coming out (in September on Signature Sounds).  It’s called Letters from a Flying Machine

Sufjan Stevens – The BQE (Oct 20th)

21st Jul 09 (Tue) 3 comments

Well, ask and ye shall receive…

The BQE – out 10/20/2009

Sufjan Stevens‘ has a new project coming out, The BQE.  Nope, not a state… it’s a a cinematic suite inspired by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the hula hoop.  It’s due out on October 20, 2009, and will be available as a CD/DVD combo, a double gatefold vinyl with large scale booklet & black-and-white comic book, and a sold-separately color version of the comic book.

The assumed cover art (at top of blog) has a dreadful, tangled mass of a font… much like what I imagine driving on the BQE is like. :)

Sunny Day Real Estate have also caught the reunion flu

23rd Jun 09 (Tue) 2 comments

File this under: awesome.

So, I saw Sunny Day Real Estate in 2000 on their The Rising Tide tour.  It is probably one of the 10 or 20 best concerts ever for me, and I say that in that they aren’t one of my favorite 10 or 20 bands in my wheelhouse.  Anyway, I dig their albums a plenty, but that tour was just fantasticly great.  Even the opener, Euphone, was great (my first foray into post-rock).

Well, in the recent rash of get togethers that I care about (Faith No More and Galactic Cowboys being two notables), SDRE are getting back together with the original four members: Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner, and recently Foo Fighters’ William Goldsmith & Nate Mendel.  Call it a SDRE-union, if you will.  Diary and LP2 will also be re-issued on Sub Pop.  Read the full story over at Pitchfork and BrooklynVegan.  Here are the tourdates:

09-17 Vancouver, British Columbia – Commodore Ballroom
09-18 Portland, OR – Crystal Ballroom (MusicFest NW)
09-20 Murray, UT – Murray Theater
09-21 Denver, CO – Ogden Theater
09-23 Minneapolis, MN – First Avenue
09-24 Chicago, IL – Metro
09-25 Detroit, MI – St. Andrew’s Hall
09-27 New York, NY – Terminal Five
09-28 Boston, MA – House of Blues
09-30 Washington, D.C. – 930 Club
10-01 Philadelphia, PA – Trocadero
10-03 Atlanta, GA – CW Center Stage
10-05 Dallas, TX – Granada Theater
10-06 Houston, TX – Warehouse Live – Ballroom
10-07 Austin, TX – La Zona Rosa
10-09 Tempe, AZ – Marquee
10-10 Anaheim, CA – House of Blues
10-11 Los Angeles, CA – Henry Fonda Theater
10-13 San Francisco, CA – The Fillmore
10-15 Spokane, WA – Knitting Factory
10-16 Seattle, WA – Paramount Theater

I plan on hitting the Portland show.  That week is busy for me now… I’ve got Porcupine Tree on Wednesday, Wynton Marsalis on Thursday, and now Sunny Day Real Estate on Friday.

But it’s gonna rule!  And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Regina Spektor / Placebo / Elliott Smith / Sean Lennon+

17th Mar 09 (Tue) Leave a comment

A trio of news plus one batch of retro coolness…

Regina Spektor‘s got a new one coming out called Far (out in June on Sire Records).  Read more over at Pitchfork (hey, I’m lazy and it’s busy season).

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

(European date schemes are so… backwards)

Placebo‘s got a new one coming out in June as well… June 8th, that is.  It’s called Battle for the Sun Read more over at Placeboworld.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, and Yoko Ono have some tracks on the premiere release from Chimera Music (their record label).  It’s got tracks from upcoming work by all of them… check it out at fina music downloads.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Pitchfork has a 28+ minute 1998 documentary of Elliott Smith called Strange Parallels.  I have this on DVD-R from a tape trader a while ago, but it’s available to watch for free up on Pitchfork.  It’s quirky and fun – – a good look into Elliott right on the cusp of “super-stardom” (around/just after the Oscar nominee time).

REVIEW: My Brightest Diamond @ W.O.W. Hall (Eugene, OR – – 11/21/08)

22nd Nov 08 (Sat) 6 comments

FYI… my PHOTOS of the SHOW are at the BOTTOM

Yay… I’ve been waiting for this show for a few months.  I last saw Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond) in April 2007 at the MusicNOW Fest in Cincinnati.  It was at that show where she debuted many songs that ended up on A Thousand Shark’s Teeth.  I was going to drive up to Portland on Thursday for the show, then they announced a Eugene show (yay!).  It was sparsely attended, though not as sparse as a Glen Phillips’ WOW Hall show earlier this year.  I don’t know… WOW Hall shows seem so hit or miss.  Maybe the Blues Traveler show at McDonald Theatre on Friday hurt MBD’s crowd?  Anyway, the artists were in good spirits and put on a great show nonetheless.

Openers, Clare and the Reasons, went on around 9pm and played 40 minutes of very cinematic-tinged, indie-pop fare.  The band was made up of singer/guitarist Clare Muldaur Manchon, multi-instrumentalist Olivier Manchon, and string-players Hiroko Taguchi & Maria Jeffers – – all four dressed in all red costumes.  (The MBD & Clare touring collaboration was also an efficient one, as Olivier, Hiroko & Maria were MBD’s backing band as well. After their set, buying their studio CD The Movie for $10 seemed like a steal. I look forward to hearing it, as it’s littered with guest artists / studio collaborators such as Van Dyke Parks (!!!!!) and Sufjan Stevens.

(click for larger)

Clare & the Reasons’ Setlist:

  • Pluto a fave of the set, nice pizzicatto strings
  • Better Without You
  • Pluton / Rodi a fave of the set, nice saw work, 1st song done in the dark with flashing lights
  • Nowhere
  • Can Your Car Do That? (I Don’t Think So)
  • Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Tears for Fears cover)
  • Cook for You

Next up was My Brightest Diamond, who has gotten a lot of dedication here on this blog – – for which I do not apologize.  In fact, she’s been the most prolific (or at least most little web goodies) of the Asthmatic Kitty artists lately.  I mean, come on, Sufjan!  You’re overdue. :)  Anyway, back to MBD…

(click for larger)

MBD’s performance was excellent, as usual.  As mentioned above, Olivier Manchon, Hiroko Taguchi, and Maria Jeffers were her backing band as well – – this time dressed in black & white costumes. They played around an hour, which included a magic show, a shadow & puppet show, twirling & whistling hoses, and much storytelling.

MBD’s Setlist:

  • Golden Star a fave of mine
  • If I Were Queen
  • Apples a fave of mine
  • To Pluto’s Moon
  • Olivier’s Magic Show
  • Disappear a fave of mine
  • Dragonfly a fave of mine
  • From the Top of the World started Shara’s At the Back of the North Wind storytime
  • Black & Costaud a fave, started with Olivier’s storytime
  • The Ice & The Storm
  • Inside a Boy a fave of mine
  • Je n’en connais pas la fin / Hymne à l’amour – with an excellent shadow and puppet show
  • Encore: The Gentlest Gentleman – with Shara on mandolin

Check MBD‘s music out on iTunes, Amazon, or your local record shop…

Well, actually she does look down…

First off, it may seem like I’m blogging like a fool the past few days… well, I apologize to fill your RSS feeder with so much blog kibble, but there’s a lot going on in the world of my favorite musics.

This blog goes specifically back to my second favorite Asthmatic Kitty artist My Brightest Diamond (Sufjan Stevens being my first favorite, but only by a banjo neck).  Shara Worden (the brightest diamond) plays on top of a rooftop with her string quartet OSSO.  It’s part of Pitchfork TV‘s Don’t Look Down series:

More Brightest Diamond

19th Aug 08 (Tue) 2 comments

I saw this on the Asthmatic Kitty website…

I don’t know if it’s a new CD, new vinyl, new iTunes, or new multi-platform release… regardless, it’s Shara / My Brightest Diamond -and- MORE SONGS. :)

The info…

While Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond retains a French vocabulary more comparable to that of an African Grey Parrot than to Victor Hugo, oh how she does love to sing French songs from the 1930s. Borrowed melodies from Worden’s favorite French sparrow, the inimitable Edith Piaf, “Adieu mon Coeur,” and “Hymne A L’Amour” have become standard concert repertoire for My Brightest Diamond in recent years.

After having fled Germany to escape the Nazi’s in 1933, composer Kurt Weill penned the music for “Youkali:Tango Habenera”. Years later, Roger Fernay added lyrics describing a vagabond trip to an island of bliss called Youkali, whereupon landing a fairy would act as one’s personal tour guide. Youkali is a land of happiness and fulfilled desire, a place where all the stars shine brighter. But the dreamy mists dissipate in the second verse of Fernay’s piece, as life progresses only tediously while poor human souls seek to escape to the mysterious utopia in vain.

With the help of co-producer / ear candy man Zac Rae, a longstanding Diamond collaborator, these recordings take new flight with his host of reversed pianos, paint can snares, and warbling theramins.

1. From the Top of the World
2. Youkali: Tango Habanera
3. Hymne Á L’Amour
4. Adieu Mon Coeur

My Brightest Diamond’s From the Top of the World is out Sept 23rd, y’all.

Greydon Square, Ani DiFranco & Steven Wilson

7th Aug 08 (Thu) 2 comments

Atheist rapper Greydon Square comes back strong on his latest album, The CPT Theorem. This is his third album, though his debut (Absolute from 2004) is long out-of-print… so it’s only the 2nd album of his that I am lucky to own. His album The Compton Effect was one of my favorite albums in 2007. This album branches out more beyond the primarily atheist lyrics, more about his life and other topics (to some extent). I’m on my 2nd time through, and I’m diggin’ it. Fav track thus far… “Cubed.” The album is on some internet stores, specifically iTunes. Give it a listen… as well as his last one (The Compton Effect), too…

In non-atheist rap news, Ani DiFranco‘s got a new song posted to her MyScpae page*. The song is called “Smiling Underneath.” I dig its more “band-oriented” sound. Her new (20th studio) album, Red Letter Year, comes out on 9/30/08.

Yep, 20 albums in, what, 18-19 years?!  Crazy… but I dig just about all of ’em.

Regarding Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson, of whom I posted a news bit 2 weeks or so ago, there’s a YouTube trailer for his upcoming solo album, Insurgentes:

Coming up this weekend for me… King’s X and Extreme playing on the same stage. Woot! How’s that for diverse music in one post: atheist rap, hipster folk, progressive rock, the founders of grunge, and a hair band. :)

~Dan – np: JudeCuba

*MyScpae is a new networking site for people who can’t tuckin’ fype.
