CocoRosie on Daytrotter
I just got into CocoRosie via a recent KEXP in-studio session. They have a great mix of rock, hip-hop, chamber music… similar to that of Emily Wells. Anyway, the few websites that aren’t RSS feed-able that made it to my “must check every day” list… Daytrotter is great, and they just hit us with a live in the studio session with CocoRosie…

Carissa’s Wierd – “Die”
News from SeattleShowGal’s blog…

When the story broke May 3, 2010 that Carissa’s Wierd were going to be doing a reunion show on July 9th and releasing a retrospective with Hardly Art, the blogosphere was a flutter. The original Carissa’s Weird crew that split and went on to be solo act Sara Cahoone and others formed Band of Horses were coming back and in righteous form! Today, Hardly art is being kind enough to share the track “Die” off the up and coming retrospective They’ll Only Miss You When You Leave: Songs 1996-2003, scheduled to be released on July 13, 2010. The strings swoon as the keys dance and vocals charm. Get it! Listen to it. Download it. Be excited for the upcoming show and release.
Carissa’s Wierd – “Die” (hosted by Seattle Show Gal)
It’s available for pre-order now at http://hardlyart.com/carissaswierd.html and the first 50 pre-orders get a special limited edition 7″ vinyl.
Yoshie Fruchter of Pitom on Klezmer podcast
The latest Klezmer Podcast features an interview and tune from Yoshie Fruchter, front man for Judaic rock band Pitom.
The Pitom debut (2008) is one of my favorites from Tzadik‘s Radical Jewish Culture series… one of the rare rock bands in the John Zorn Jewish musical revolution…

Ty Tabor – Something’s Coming
King’s X guitarist Ty Tabor‘s next solo album, Something’s Coming, now has a release date and a song streaming over at tytabor.com and molkenmusic.com. It’s out on March 20, 2010 and is up for pre-order over at Molken.

Besides Ty’s usual fantastic guitarwork and vocals, it features Jimi Hazel and Rick Skatore from 24-7 Spyz, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal from Guns N’ Roses, and Wally Farkas of Galactic Cowboys and Xenuphobe.
Unrelated, the new boxset for Steven Wilson‘s Cover Versions showed up today. It’s fantastic!
Also, unrelated, Derek Webb (who I dig a bunch) just released his entire last album (Stockholm Syndrome) for free. It’s on Noise Trade for free until midnight on Thursday (2/25).

Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson started his Cover Versions singles (CDR and 7″ vinyl) back in 2005. They are always one new SW song and one “mysterious” cover version (CV1 was Alanis Morissette’s “Thank You”). Coming the next few months will be the 6th and final CV release, complete with a box to house all six. SWHQ/Headphone Dust will have the CDs once available (no conclusive date was mentioned – – but the original SW song “An End to End” is now streaming on his MySpace page). ToneFloat Records will have the CV5 & CV6 vinyl singles once released.
Tori Amos on Daytrotter
Um… wow… Tori Amos stopped by the Daytrotter Studios…
The few websites that aren’t RSS feed-able that made it to my “must check every day” list… Daytrotter is great, and they hit us today with a live in the studio session with Tori Amos…she plays a couple of songs from Midwinter Graces and a couple from Abnormally Attracted to Sin…

Good :) & Bad :(

First, the good news… Brian Borcherdt of one of my favorite groups (HOLY FUCK) just released his solo album, Torches (along with the Ward Colorado demos). It’s available for free download over on his website… and if you like it, you can (and should) buy the CD or vinyl. Get the free album by going to his site (click the album cover below):

And now the (probably) bad news… Apple bought Lala. OK, it may turn out for the best… but I really dug Lala when it started out as a CD sharing service (you mail off CDs you don’t want, get CDs you do want from others). It’s been a while since my peak use with them (I’ve run out of stuff to send), and they changed their focus away from CD swap to streaming about a year or more ago.
Anyway, I like Apple, I like Lala… but I dread what the acquisition will mean. I mean, pretty soon, are we gonna have to log-in to our iTuMyFaceChaseTube to check the video upload of our bank account’s status update with a free music download?
I just hope my indie bastion of hope, CD Baby, doesn’t get swallowed up by Apple or Amazon or Goodyear or Olive Garden… that would be a sad day for sure.

dredg & Salmon Rushdie
One of my favorite rock bands around right now is dredg. I’ve seen them twice this year, and their 2009 album The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion is at this time the easiest pick for album of the year for me. Easiest. It’s fantastic. The aforementioned album is a concept album inspired by Salmon Rushdie‘s “Imagine There’s No Heaven: A Letter to the Sixth Billionth Citizen.”
Well, SPIN just put out an article with a review, live videos, and music downloads from a joint performance by dredg & Salmon Rushdie at Manhattan’s Housing Works’ Bookstore Café (click the picture below).
The videos included are Salmon reading his essay and then dredg performing “The Pariah,” “The Ornament,” and”Information.” Also available for download on the site are mp3’s of three dredg songs:

Nellie McKay‘s upcoming album on Verve, Normal As Blueberry Pie, finally has an album cover…
Cute! It’s out on vinyl as well as CD (and digital copies). But with something out on vinyl, why settle for crappy lossy mp3s?
She’s also hitting the road. Dates are trickling in… she’s playing Seattle’s Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley the same night as Ben Folds with the Seattle Symphony (Oct 20). I’m up there for work, too. I’m totally in a quandary.
