Daniel Johns (Silverchair) on JJJ

10th Dec 09 (Thu) Leave a comment

Silverchair front-man Daniel Johns called into Australia’s Triple J to give info about the upcoming album.  You can go listen to the 7+ minute interview at Triple J.  He’s back in Australia and has worked on the new songs with his band mates.  Gleaned from the interview… the album currently comes off as “dirtier than Young Modern” (per Daniel), and there is a less frequent use of guitars so far (only on 4 of the 15 or so songs currently in the works).

Who knows how things will turn out, but I think we can expect a new Silverchair album in 2010.  No album name yet… unless it’s gonna be called Fly Fishing. ;)

First, the good newsBrian Borcherdt of one of my favorite groups (HOLY FUCK) just released his solo album, Torches (along with the Ward Colorado demos).  It’s available for free download over on his website… and if you like it, you can (and should) buy the CD or vinyl.  Get the free album by going to his site (click the album cover below):

(click it and download the music free)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And now the (probably) bad newsApple bought Lala.  OK, it may turn out for the best… but I really dug Lala when it started out as a CD sharing service (you mail off CDs you don’t want, get CDs you do want from others).  It’s been a while since my peak use with them (I’ve run out of stuff to send), and they changed their focus away from CD swap to streaming about a year or more ago.

Anyway, I like Apple, I like Lala… but I dread what the acquisition will mean.  I mean, pretty soon, are we gonna have to log-in to our iTuMyFaceChaseTube to check the video upload of our bank account’s status update with a free music download?

I just hope my indie bastion of hope, CD Baby, doesn’t get swallowed up by Apple or Amazon or Goodyear or Olive Garden… that would be a sad day for sure.

Wussy… and rumors of Wussy

8th Dec 09 (Tue) Leave a comment

One of my beloved Cincinnati locals, Wussy, has put out some great rock.  Three albums, an EP, and some vinyl to be exact… they continually put out great material.  And while not an “official press release,” they leaked some great news via a status update on the Facebox on Monday…

(highlighting by me)

I got into Wussy via knowing their lead singer Lisa Walker in college… Lisa plus Ass Ponys‘ Chuck Cleaver, Mark Messerly, and Joe Klug make up Wussy.  They put out drony-yet-hook-laden rock, and they release their stuff via hometown Shake It Records (in the lovely Northside neighborhood in Cincinnati).  They’ve gotten some buzz in national rags (like Spin, CMJ, et cetera).  First national tour, first time they’ve hinted at coming out my way = Yippie!

Anyway… I hope it happens.  Srsly.

Oh, check out a recent article about Wussy’s Chuck & Lisa in Cincinnati Magazine (click picture):

PS- Celldweller‘s Wish Upon a Blackstar Ch 2 is out now.  Just DL’d it… looking forward to spinning it…

more  Jónsi news… reposted from sigur-ros.co.uk

jónsi’s debut solo album “go” will be released march 22nd 2010 in europe, march 23rd in usa. the album contains nine songs, most of which are sung in english, and was co-produced by jónsi, alex somers and peter katis (the national, interpol). jónsi will be embarking on an extensive world tour throughout 2010, of which more information will be annonced later.

“go” initally began as a low-key acoustic record, but, according to jónsi, “somewhere along the line it just sort of exploded”. the result is a joyful and dramatic album, featuring ecstatic string, brass and woodwind arrangements by composer nico muhly (antony & the johnsons, grizzly bear), as well as warmer, more melancholic moments.

in the coming weeks, jónsi’s official site www.jonsi.com will be updated with exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and videos of jónsi and collaborators making the record. in addition you can download the track “boy lilikoi” for free, and listen to samples from the album by clicking the “jónsi” letters. artwork on the site was created by jónsi’s sister inga birgisdóttir (press images for the album were shot by jónsi’s other sister lilja birgisdóttir).

new Kim Taylor… soon…

3rd Dec 09 (Thu) Leave a comment

Recently featured on The Ghost Whisperer (a “TV show,” or so say my sources)… Cincinnati singer-songwriter Kim Taylor popped the news on her website yesterday that her follow-up to 2006’s I Feel Like a Fading Light will be out in a few weeks.  It’ll be called Little Miracle, produced by Jimi Zhivago, and the first 100 downloaders will get “an added bonus.”

I’m hoping there’s also a physical release (or a repeat of the vinyl / different edition like she did for Fading Light).

Celldweller *Wish Upon a Blackstar* Chapter 2

2nd Dec 09 (Wed) 1 comment

The pre-order for Celldweller‘s Wish Upon a Blackstar: Chapter 2 went live yesterday.  The second chapter (of five total) will feature the songs “The Best It’s Gonna Get” and “Eon.”

Chapter 2 will be available for download in several bundles (including a deluxe edition for $4.99) on December 8th from Celldweller’s FiXT store.  The deluxe edition features a remix from chapter one, “So Long Sentiment” mixed by Toksin’s Anhedonia

After all five chapters are released, I expect there will be a full-length album (and hopefully CD) issue.

RECIPE: Pumpkin Vodka Cocktail

26th Nov 09 (Thu) 2 comments

Pumpkin-Infused Vodka Cocktail

While this is definitely too late to prep for Thanksgiving today (unless you happen to have Pumpkin vodka sitting around the house), it’s an easy recipe and the infused vodka is delicious.  If you’re on the look-out for last minute recipes for Thanksgiving, check out Alisa’s great thanksgiving link page.

This recipe is from the December 2009 issue of VegNews magazine (tweaked slightly and directions expanded upon – plus, who only infuses a 375mL of vodka?). :)

Vodka Ingredients:

  • 750 mL of regular vodka (don’t buy cheap, but don’t buy expensive… mine was in the $15-20 range)
  • 1 cup of roasted pumpkin
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 Tbl real maple syrup

Vodka Steps:

  1. Roast the pumpkin fresh, don’t do canned – that’s gross.  For how to roast a pumpkin, check out this blog (it’s easy).
  2. After the pumpkin has cooled off a little bit, combine all ingredients in an air-tight container.
  3. Place in a cool place for 1 week.  My garage in the middle of November was cool enough.
  4. Strain the infusion.  I used a metal strainer for pass #1 and then a cheese cloth for pass #2.

Cocktail Ingredients:
makes 6 drinks

  • 1.5 cups pumpkin-infused vodka (from above)
  • 1.5 cups creamer (soy or otherwise)
  • 6 Tbl real maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract or imitation flavoring
  • fresh grated nutmeg (or ground nutmeg if fresh grated is not available)
  • for rim: agave nectar & toasted ground almonds

Cocktail Steps:

  1. Combine first four ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.  Shake.
  2. Rim each martini glass with agave nectar and toasted almonds.
  3. Pour mixture in the glasses and top for nutmeg.
  4. Enjoy!

For the calorie counters in the group… the cocktail is about 260 calories, 4g of fat, 21g of carbs, and minimal protein.

This is a mainly music-based blog.  If you stumbled in on a recipe search, check out my other recipes, like vegan biscuits & gravy, spiced biscotti, vegan cactus chili, vegan bananas foster, mushroom dumpling stew, strawberry cornbread muffins, fruit spring rolls, grilled coconut-rum pineapple, and vegetarian s’mores pouches at THIS LINK.

Ellery – Down, Down, Down EP

25th Nov 09 (Wed) Leave a comment

My favorite husband-and-wife songwriting duo from Cincinnati is at it again… the holiday EP Down, Down, Down from Ellery is out.  This time it’s pay what you want (min $4).  Available for streaming at bandcamp, too.  I generally abhor Christmas music, but this one is pretty darn good.  The first two songs are brand new originals, the 3rd song is from their holiday EP a couple years ago, and then they do two classics…

REVIEW: The Swell Season @ McDonald Theatre (Eugene, OR – 11/23/09)

24th Nov 09 (Tue) 11 comments

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

Like mostly everyone who is into The Swell Season (Glen Hansard of The Frames with Markéta Irglová), I got into them via the movie ONCE.  They came through Eugene after I had moved to town, but before I had gotten into them.  My brother made me watch it when we were home for my other brother’s wedding (July 2008), and I suppose I should thank him for that.   With The Swell Season’s original 2009 Strict Joy tour date press release, they didn’t have a Eugene date, but I’m glad they added one…

The opener was Doveman‘s frontman Thomas Bartlett.  He played about a half of an hour of whispy piano tunes.  He seemed slightly shy, rarely looking towards the crowd… but maybe that’s just his style or how the piano was set up for him.  Due to his whispy vocals, he struck me as similar to Jeff Hanson or slimmer, beardless Sam Beam of Iron & Wine – but on piano.  He’s worked with The Frames, Swell Season, Antony & the Johnsons, Laurie Anderson, Arto Lindsay, The National, and Yoko Ono in the past – so that put him in my “he’s cool” book.  Songs he played included “Angel’s Share ” (about whisky), “The Burgundy Stain” (about wine), and a medley to the Footloose soundtrack.  The Footloose songs were fantastically mournful and sad.  Classic!

The show opened with Glen and Markéta coming out and crouching down in front of the center mic.  I wasn’t close enough to see if someone was playing the electronics / keyboards, but they started out with “Fallen From the Sky” – staying crouched down for the whole song.  Luckily that didn’t continue for the rest of the show (or my continued photos would have been lame). :)

After the initial song, the band came out.  The band was made up of the rest of The Frames, Glen’s band that was the precursor to Once and The Swell Season.  I’m very rapidly becoming a serious fan of Glen’s vocals… which I suppose means that I need to get The Frames’ back catalog.  Vocally Glen reminds me a lot of my buddy, Ashley Peacock.  Most of the set was Glen on vocals, but Markéta covered lead vocals for “If You Want Me,” “Fantasy Man,” and “I Have Loved You Wrong.”  As far as most powerful vocal performance… I’ll have to go with “Say It To Me Now,” where Glen played solo and off microphone.  A few songs later, Glen was killin’ his guitar on Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks,” and he shredded at least a couple of strings – luckily his roadie was on top of things and brought out a replacement guitar right away.

Setlist: just over 2 hours

  • Fallen From The Sky
  • Lies
  • Low Rising
  • In These Arms *a fave of the night*
  • The Rain *a fave of the night*
  • The Moon
  • If You Want Me
  • Fantasy Man
  • Say It To Me Now (Glen solo, off mic) *a fave of the night*
  • Leave
  • Lay Me Down
  • Astral Weeks [Van Morrison]
  • The Blue Shoes (Colin solo violin song)
  • I Have Loved You Wrong
  • Once *a fave of the night*
  • When Your Mind’s Made Up *a fave of the night*
  • Encore: Falling Slowly *a fave of the night*
  • High Hope (new song)
  • High Horses
  • Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy
  • It All Falls Down (with Doveman)
  • Red Chord [The Frames]
  • The Parting Glass [The Clancy Brothers]

After leaving the venue, I bet everyone thought they got their money’s worth… a great show, great vocals by Glen & Markéta.  While I know this was a break-up record of sort, I’m glad that they’re still able to work together.  And while it may be a long shot, I hope they do continue to work together in the future.

Doug Pinnick, 24-7 Spyz & Fishbone members form A.N.M.

23rd Nov 09 (Mon) 4 comments

As reported on Blabbermouth

Jimi Hazel — guitarist, vocalist and producer of acclaimed heavy metal soul band 24-7 SPYZ — has announced the formation of what is now being billed as the “first black supergroup” called A.N.M. (a.k.a. ANTI N***ER MACHINE).

The band’s lineup is as follows:

  • Doug Pinnick (KING’S X): Vocals
  • Jimi Hazel (24-7 SPYZ): Guitar, Vocals
  • Rick Skatore (24-7 SPYZ): Bass, Vocals
  • Spacey T (SOUND BARRIER, FISBONE): Guitar, Vocals
  • Greg Fulton (CYCLONE TEMPLE, RWA): Guitar, Vocals
  • Phil D. Fish (FISHBONE, WICKED WISDOM): Drums, Percussion

Commented Jimi: “This is gonna be a beautiful thing and we will drop some of the heaviest, funkiest and crunchiest music heard in a long time! I’m honored to be a part of music making history with my brothers and I know that people will be more than happy when they hear what comes from us!

A.N.M. is currently talking to labels in search of a home for what will become one of the highly anticipated releases of 2010. The band plans to spend the winter writing and recording and hopes to release a CD in late spring or early summer.

~*~*~*~*~*~

I dug the Doug collaboration with 24-7 Spyz (back in 1996) on Heavy Metal Soul By the Pound.  With Doug on lead vocal duties and Fishbone members in the mix, this promises to be pretty damn good.  I’m not too fond of their band name.  I mean, I understand the meaning and where they’re coming from.  I just don’t necessarily “prefer” their choice.  Regardless, I bet the music will be great.

Goddamn Electric Bill “Ten Thousand Years”

23rd Nov 09 (Mon) Leave a comment

I’ve been a fan of Jason Torbert‘s pseudonym Goddamn Electric Bill and his organic, electronic one-man bandness for a while.  I bought his EP, The Only Power to Please, from the musical social ghetto that is MySpace back in 2005.  I’ve been a fan of his work ever since – it fits with a lot of the organic electronic that I dig: Chroma Key, Ken Andrew’s On, The Album Leaf, Tristeza, Frog Pocket, et cetera…

Well, his new video for “Ten Thousand Years” off of 2008’s Topics for Gossip is really creative and heart warming…

Ty Tabor (of King’s X) news…

22nd Nov 09 (Sun) Leave a comment

posted on Ty Tabor‘s website

Ty Tabor (King’s X), John Myung (Dream Theater), and Rod Morgenstein (tons of bands) are discussing the possibility of recording a new Jelly Jam album in 2010. This would be their third release as The Jelly Jam and their fifth overall release together. More news coming soon!  [Editor’s note: yay!  The Jelly Jam / Platypus / Jughead releases are some of my favorites from Ty]

Ty has some things on eBay at the moment and plans to sell some of Alien Beans Studio’s gear over the next month. Keep an eye out at eBay.

King’s X is still working on the live DVD shot in London earlier this year. Look for a 2010 release.

Ty’s new solo album is coming along nicely. The yet untitled album will also be released in 2010. [Editor’s note: double yay!]

REVIEW: Maynard James Keenan’s PUSCIFER 2nd night @ Roseland (Portland, OR – 11/16/09)

17th Nov 09 (Tue) 5 comments

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW are at the BOTTOM

Maynard’s voice shines on Night 2…

Saturday’s Puscifer show (review link) was fantastic, and I happened to be up in Portland for a work training session; so, what the hell… let’s do this again!  I heart Maynard!

No wine tasting (for me) this time… in fact, for a more detailed review, definitely check out Saturday’s show review.  Monday, I showed up around 8pm and got situated near the front of the general admission section.

Sweethead opened the show again.  I switched up where I took in their music this time… I could definitely hear the guitars better, but the vocals were a little muddy until midway through their set.  I liked them.  Troy’s a good guitarist, and Serrina has some nice energy (ok, and nice legs, too). :)

This was their last night as support for Puscifer, and Troy took a dive into the drum set at the end… crash! buzz!

After Troy and Serrina got up, they left the stage – guitar still buzzing.  As the crew pulled Sweethead’s gear and monitors off the stage, they lifted up a large black sheet to hide the stage (something new compared to Saturday night)…

I had seen on setlist.fm that the two nights in the same city had differing set lists, and Portland was no exception.  Where Saturday was more of the blasphemy day to kick things off, Monday was… well… at 9pm, then the sheet came down, it looked like it was a camping theme (complete with fake fire).  Maynard was inside the tent, and they had him projected on the screen behind him.  After some bullshitting, he finally came out to start the show properly…

The stage seemed darker, but at least Maynard was out there for the two songs of which I was allowed to take photos.  Both he and Carina were obfuscated again behind the video boxes, which is an oddity fitting of Maynard’s persona.  Overall, I think Monday night’s show featured Maynard’s voice better – though the song selection wasn’t much different (other than order).  The video breaks were completely different… comedic pitchmen trying to sell reality television concepts to Maynard – who wasn’t paying too well of attention and always got the concept wrong.  Hilarity ensued, of course.

Here’s what they played among the campfire and sleeping bags…

Setlist: 90 minutes or so [compare sets with Night #1]

  • Rev 22:20
  • Drunk With Power
  • (Video Break 1)
  • Indigo Children
  • Trekka
  • Potions
  • (Video Break 2)
  • Momma Sed (with Tim Alexander as a Portland stripper)
  • Vagina Mine
  • Dozo
  • The Undertaker
  • (Video Break 3)
  • Polar Bear
  • Sour Grapes
  • Queen B
  • The Mission (featuring Carina Round)
  • The Humbling River
  • No Encore

Maynard’s voice sounded especially great on Indigo Children, Potions, Momma Sed (seemed slower/mellower than Saturday), Polar Bear, and The Humbling River.  I’m really digging the new EP’s material… and I’m looking forward to more digital EPs, physical CDs, whatever Maynard wants to throw at us!
