Nellie McKay – New Video & Touring behind her musical ‘I Want to Live!’
I Want to Live! a musical death row revue, conjures the life story of “a woman of dubious moral standards…often a guest in seedy bars…”
“Inspired by the 1958 movie of the same name, I Want to Live! combines Nellie McKay’s virtually unlimited gifts as a singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, ukulele player, mimic, satirist and comedian into a show that is much deeper than its surface might suggest,” writes Stephen Holden for The New York Times. “In the most lighthearted way they evoke a heartless environment of social injustice in which people who fall through the cracks are invisible to everyone else.”
“Pretty darned unique,” adds Michael Musto of the Village Voice.

Coldplay – Every Tearderp Is A Waterderp
British knockoff rock act Coldplay have announced an Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall digital EP, featuring two more brand new tracks “Major Minus” and “Moving To Mars.”
The digital EP comes out Sunday (6/26). It also comes out on CD and 7″ vinyl on Monday (UK) and Tuesday (US). The title track is already available (see Amazon for sound sample).
If Chris Martin releases a video of him dancing by himself in an alley, well… you know where he got the idea.

Sorry, I hate to be negative (or do I?). I just have very little patience for Coldplay.
Elysian Fields “Red Riding Hood” (video)
NYC artrock duo Elysian Fields have a new album out called Last Night on Earth (tomorrow on Ojet Records). The debut video for “Red Riding Hood” is out now… sultry and sexy, as Jennifer Charles’ voice is prone to project…
You can get the CD for only $12 (*shipping included) at Ojet’s webpage. I’m sure the download version will show up on Amazon and iTunes soon… currently only an expensive import is available on Amazon.
Free Nellie McKay download (“One’s On the Way”)
As performed on Mountain Stage, Nellie McKay just made available a free mp3 download of “One’s on the Way” (right click & “save as”)… it is available as a call for support of WV Free – Advocates for Reproductive Health & Justice.
“One’s On the Way” is is a previously unreleased track. You can pick up Nellie’s latest album, Home Sweet Mobile Home, at the Amazons.
As far as future not-for-profit collaborations from Nellie, she’s contributing to a Farm Animal Benefit CD (to be released in September). It will feature new music from Moby, Yoko Ono, Matisyahu, members of the Buzzcocks and more. It’s called Home On the Range and is put out by CFEI & Planet CD NYC.
‘Home On The Range’ is a benefit compilation CD presented by the 501(c)(3) non profit organization CFEI. All proceeds from the sale of this CD are donated to a collective of farm animal sanctuaries including Woodstock Sanctuary, Happy Trails, Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Animal Acres and Kindred Spirits. These organizations rescue, feed, provide safe shelter and care for abused and neglected farm animals.
The benefit CD features eco-friendly packaging and includes “Compassion 101”, an exclusive accompanying educational booklet and resource guide. Simply by purchasing this music you are helping protect the lives of thousands of cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, turkeys, horses and rabbits. Home On The Range will be available in selected retail stores as well as a download via iTunes and Amazon.
Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 2 #3
If you came here for the U2 Seattle review, GO HERE.
One a month, from March to December 2011…
Derek Webb’s Democracy Vol 2… This month, it is “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys. I generally hate/hate/hate this song… I blame Jonatha Brooke & Jars of Clay’s more schmaltzy versions. I’m digging Derek’s more layered version.
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 2 is a continuation of the covers project Derek started last year. The fans get to nominate songs and then vote once the nominations are tallied. Here’s what he’s done in 2010 and 2011 to date (you can still go back and buy this volume):
- January 2010: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
- February: Coldplay – Fix You
- March: Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’
- April: Gnarls Barkley – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul
- May: Sufjan Stevens – Chicago *a personal fave*
- June: U2 – Where the Streets Have No Name
- July: Huey Lewis & the News – Power of Love
- August: The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby *a personal fave*
- September: Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence
- October: Radiohead – Karma Police *a personal fave*
- November: Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah
- December: Robert Robinson – Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
- January 2011: off
- February: off
- March: Cee-Lo Green – F**k You
- April: Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer
- May: The Beach Boys – God Only Knows
Also, Derek & his wife Sandra McCracken are hitting the road in the Fall for a house concert / living room show tour for their upcoming TN EP. GO HERE if you can host.
Democracy Vol. 2 is a series of subscription based albums of cover songs that Derek will be recording annually, starting January 2010. Those who participate will not only receive the exclusive album, but will democratically decide what songs Derek will record.
Ever wished you could hear Derek cover your favorite Beatles song? Or Backstreet Boys song? Or even re-record your favorite old Caedmon’s Call song? Here’s your chance. Songs will be nominated and voted down to 10. Derek will record them (demo quality) and deliver them digitally (320kbps MP3s), one song per month for 10 months (March to December). Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb!
REVIEW: U2 & Lenny Kravitz @ Qwest Field (Seattle, WA – 6/4/11)
photo by Soren McCarty (Denver show)
U2 is one of the biggest rock bands in the world. They’ve been a band for almost 35 years – all the same four guys. Sit back and think about that for a minute. Sure, they haven’t been without struggles, but they’ve been a solid force in rock music for a long, long time. Saturday night was my third time to see them (PopMart 1996, Elevation 2001), and based on the reviews and photos I had seen, I knew I was going to be blown away…
Qwest Field started being configured for U2’s 360º Tour earlier that week. The 360º Tour features the largest concert stage structure ever and a 360-degree staging/audience configuration that allows fans to surround the stage from all sides. The large parking lot full of semi-trucks wasn’t just for Bono’s sunglasses supply. Check out the GeneStout.com media recap of the stage build out (with Mike Savoia’s photos – more from Mike below, too). See a time-lapse build-out of the Denver show (FB video link).
We positioned ourselves at near the north side of the outside of the loop for the show – as we hadn’t gotten there early enough for the inner loop. After running into a bad batch in the crowd (i.e.- drunk as hell d-bags), we backed off and watched from a nice safe distance. Opener Lenny Kravitz hit the stage around 7:30 and played a solid 50 minutes set. One new song, and a cadre of his hits. Cindy Blackwell was not on drums – that was the only noticeable absence. Lenny had some ear-monitor issues near the end, which was frustrating him, but he put on a great show regardless.

Lenny’s Setlist: 50 minutes
- Come On Get It [new song]
- Mamma Said
- It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over
- Let Love Rule
- American Woman [The Guess Who]
- Fly Away
- Are You Gonna Go My Way
After a short break, the David Bowie tape intro started, and U2 walked out onto the stage…

U2’s Setlist: 2+ hours
- Space Oddity [tape intro, David Bowie]
- Even Better Than The Real Thing
- I Will Follow
- Get On Your Boots
- Magnificent
- Mysterious Ways
- Elevation
- Until The End Of The World
- All I Want Is You
- Stay (Faraway, So Close!) [acoustic]
- Beautiful Day with NASA video* & Space Oddity snippet (*video below)
- Pride (In The Name Of Love)
- Miss Sarajevo
- Zooropa
- City Of Blinding Lights
- Vertigo
- I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight with Discothèque and other snippets
- Sunday Bloody Sunday
- Scarlet
- Walk On
- Encore 1: Aung San Suu Kyi Message [tape]
- One
- Where The Streets Have No Name
- Encore 2: Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
- With Or Without You
- Moment of Surrender
They rocked out, and from our vantage point it was like watching alien TV. Some of the best moments for me… The kick-off “Even Better Than the Real Thing” followed by the throwback “I Will Follow” (this show was going to be all over their catalog). The NASA Commander Mark Kelly video intro to “Beautiful Day” (from space – video below). The snippet of “Discotheque” was excellent (POP is a great, under-appreciated album). Bono swinging out on his lit-up microphone during “Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me.”
Oh, and Zoo-fucking-ropa. The expanding televisions caught me off guard… it was a circus of sights and sounds.

A massive spectacle from a massive band. A truly entertaining experience. U2 blows about any other live show out of the water as far as sheer force, light, power, and energy.

Cibo Matto – Reunion Tour 2011
Cibo Matto (Yuka Honda & Miho Hatori) are hitting the U.S. with a little reunion tour… I’ll sadly miss the Portland date by about two weeks… :( But anyway, catch it if you can.
West Coast
6/21 Seattle, WA – Neumo’s
6/22 Vancouver, BC – Fortune
6/23 Portland, OR – Doug Fir
6/25 San Francisco, CA – Bimbo’s
6/26 Los Angeles, CA – Hollywood Bowl w/Yellow Magic Orchestra
East Coast
7/12 Brooklyn, NY – Brooklyn Bowl
7/14 Chicago, IL – Lincoln Hall
7/16 Toronto, ON – Mod Club
7/18 New York, NY – Bowery Ballroom
7/19 Washington, DC – Rock N Roll Hotel
7/20 Boston, MA – Brighton Music Jason Hall
Check out their cool split-screen, double-one-shot (one forward, one backward) video of “Sugar Water” directed by Michel Gondry…
I like the video better than the actual song. My favotire album of theirs is Stereo Type A (with some of my fave NYC jazz fiends like Dave Douglas, John Medeski & Billy Martin of MMW, Sean Lennon and Marc Ribot). No word on their band for this tour. I know most of those guys are busy, but… maybe Sean Lennon will join them? I dunno. Last time I saw Yuka Honda in concert, Sean Lennon popped up on stage for a song (with Nels Cline Singers at the Doug Fir earlier this year).

Tori Amos – Night of Hunters (Sept ’11)
Tori Amos is a chameleon – changing her musical style (slightly) and her outward appearance (usually more than slightly). Trouble is lately she’s been putting out long-ass albums of mostly mediocre work, as far as I’m concerned. Oh for the heydeys of the 90s and early 2000s.
Well, she has a new one in the can entitled Night of Hunters, and it’s coming out in September 2011 on Deutsche Grammophon, a German classical label. Behold the art for her upcoming tour (and presumably the album)…

update 6/22 album art
![tori_amos_night_of_hunters_cover[1]](https://pacificlectic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/tori_amos_night_of_hunters_cover1.jpg?w=595)
Um, is she human? Is she plastic? As far as the album, here’s the press’ slant…
“It’s a 21st century song cycle inspired by classical music themes spanning over 400 years. I have used the structure of a song cycle to tell an ongoing, modern story. The protagonist is a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship. In the course of one night she goes through an initiation of sorts that leads her to reinvent herself allowing the listener to follow her on a journey to explore complex musical and emotional subject matter. One of the main themes explored on this album is the hunter and the hunted and how both exist within us.”
I’ll get it. I mean, I’ve signed a contract with my 20 year old self to buy anything Tori Amos ever puts out. I just hope to Talula that it’s good.
Incubus “Adolescents” video
Incubus’ new one isn’t “thinking outside the envelope” or “pushing the box,” as it were… but it’s a good song… check the video for “Adolescents” here:
The vibe to “Adolescent” is (to me) similar to Morning View. I’m digging the slowed down video part (3:30-ish).
The new album – If Not Now, When? – comes out July 12th. You can pre-order it now.
New Music April…
Sorry for not having much new to post as of late. I did recently get the following CDs… all of them great in their own right, and all of them worth checking out! Click on the album covers for mp3 sound samples.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – ‘All You Want’ (2011)
Toad the Wet Sprocket broke up in 1998. In its ashes, Glen Phillips‘ solo career and Lapdog was born. Glen has put out a number of solo albums and side-projects, Lapdog put out two great albums, and “Toad” has since gotten back together on occasion to tour. Well, due to being signed to a major label, they never really owned those recordings that they made back in the day. Enter… All You Want…

ALL YOU WANT is us reclaiming our past for ourselves. While making this album, we got to look under the hood at the parts we’d written so long ago, pull apart some of the magic of the originals, and in some cases, update arrangements, tempos or attitudes that we thought we could improve upon with the benefit of a little hindsight.
The process of recording this music again brought us closer together as a band, and closer to the songs that we’ve lived with for so long. These songs still mean a lot to us, and we hope our fans enjoy listening to them as much as we enjoyed making them.
-Dean, Glen, Randy, and Todd
The album will be available for sale exclusively at the band’s website and shows prior to a formal release date later this spring via both physical and digital retail outlets.

Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 2 #1
One a month, from March to December 2011…
Derek Webb’s Democracy Vol 2… This month, it is “F**k You” by Cee-Lo Green (from Gnarls Barkley). I’m at work; so I haven’t had a chance to listen yet… but I’m looking forward to it! Part of me thinks Derek is solely doing this for the “Christian singer-songwriter singing ‘Fuck You’” aspect of it, but whatever… that aspect has no bearing on my views. I like Cee-Lo’s unconventional pop song, and I like Derek Webb. The combo should prove interesting – even if he recently tweeted that he muted the F-word, since he couldn’t sing an asterisk.
If Derek covers the song live on his current tour with Jars of Clay… well, that would be excellent… but unlikely.
Update: listening to it now… personal preference would be for it to not be self-censored. Vocals also sound kinda muddy, weirdly buried in the mix. Keyboards don’t seem synched up with the guitars & drums. I applaud his moxy, just perhaps not the execution. Still enjoyable, though – all things considered.
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 2 is a continuation of the covers project Derek started last year. The fans get to nominate songs and then vote once the nominations are tallied. Here’s what he did back in 2010 (you can still go back and buy this volume):

REVIEW: Kaki King @ WOW Hall (Eugene, OR – 3/9/11)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM
Kaki King burst into the music scene in 2003 with her exquisite fretwork and primarily instrumental pieces. “Playing With Pink Noise” (from 2004’s Legs to Make Us Longer) thrust her more in the indie rock spotlight, showcasing a guitar that she played as if it were trying to run away from her. The video for “Pink Noise” was simply a white backdrop with Kaki effortlessly plucking and slapping away among randomly timed pink rose petals and balloons. It helped land her hands on the silver screen — as the up-close guitar “stunt double” for Freddie Highmore, who played a guitar prodigy in 2007’s August Rush. Later that year, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her score for Sean Penn’s Into the Wild (alongside Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder).
With her fifth album, Junior, a more mature songwriter has emerged. She still brings the famous fretwork to her songs, but Junior brings vocals more to the fore. Kaki woos us with the subtle and intricate pop of “Spit It Back In My Mouth,” the drive of “Falling Day,” the indie pop feel of “Communist Friends” and the hard rock of “Death Head.” The vulnerable and heartfelt “Sunnyside” brings the album to a close and shows off her more personal side. Kaki King is for fans of the indie rock of Sleater-Kinney and Tegan & Sara, or for those who like a bit more virtuoso musicianship mixed in with their lush pop melodies.
Kaki came through Eugene last May, and blew us away with her rockin’ band. For this go-round, it was just going to be her and her guitar. Or, shall I say… guitars… this is dubbed her “Guitar Traveling Freak Show” tour…
kaki king’s “band” on this tour
Before Kaki hit the stage, Washington went on. (Megan) Washington is an Australian singer-songwriter, who I hear is quite popular down under. She actually started her set with a joke about an odd fellow from Arcata, CA, who brandished a sword in front of her the day prior. She told us that she normally plays guitar, but due to obvious reasons wouldn’t be tonight. Her sound reminded me of a slightly grittier Regina Spektor (specifically from a vocal side of things). She definitely had some songwriting chops. She played about an hour… sometimes dreamy piano pop, sometimes more sullen indie rock. She didn’t have anything to sell us (no shirt, CDs, etc)… probably too difficult to manage hauling it to this hemisphere. I’d recommend checking out her records, especially How to Tame Lions and I Believe You Liar.
Kaki hit the stage at 8:30pm for this early show. She played almost entirely an instrumental set… with vocals only on “Life Being” and “Communist” (if I remember correctly). She switched between her trusty six string, a smaller than usual 12-string (Irish?), a banjo-guitar hybrid, an interestingly “koto”-style modified bridge guitar, a harp guitar, and probably a few I’m missing.

Setlist: about 90 minutes
- Bone Chaos in the Castle
- I Need A Girl Who Knows A Map
- Doing the Wrong Thing
- unidentified… possibly “Ingots”
- Life Being What It Is
- Playing With Pink Noise
- unidentified… possibly “Carmine St”
- My Girl the Horse [Fences]
- Andecy [Andrew York]
- Because It’s There [Michael Hedges]
- Nails
- unidentified… possibly “Magazine”
- unidentified… new song for Megan Washington
- unidentified… possibly “Bowen Island”
- Encore: unidentified… with Dan Brantigan on trumpet
- unidentified… “world premiere” drunk guitar song
- Communist Friends
Kaki is the kind of guitar player that makes non-guitar players want to learn how to play. She’s also the kind of guitar player who makes current guitar players want to throw away their axe. And despite her focused brilliance with her instrument, she has quite a humorous and awkwardly delightful stage presence. She’s charming, she’ll jokingly cuss the audience out, and then she’ll be self-deprecating. She’ll act playful and humble, and then she’ll smoke the 6 to 12 strings in front of her without much trouble. There’s no doubt that she belongs on stage and that you belong watching her.

Price for 2011’s volume is only $5 for 10 songs, one cover song each month from March through December 2011. You can still by the 2010 version (the 12 songs in Democracy Volume 1) for $8, or buy it bundled with Democracy Volume 2 for $12 – a steal for 22 songs. Nominations are immediate with Volume 2 upon purchase (after clicking through the purchase). Voting for Democracy nominations ends March 1st.

My nominations: Tori Amos “Crucify,” Lady Gaga “Telephone,” and Alice in Chains “Would?” – not favorite songs ever, but I’d be curious to hear Derek’s take on them. For a taste, here’s what he covered for us last year:
Per Derek, he has a few rules imposed on himself…
- I do no preparation. A few of last years songs I had never heard before the morning I recorded them.
- I play all the instruments and do all the recording/mixing myself, in my studio.
- I only allow myself 24 hours from the start to the finish of each song.
