REVIEW: dredg @ Wonder Ballroom (Portland, OR – 11/9/10)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM
Call me a focused, but I showed up shortly before dredg‘s 8:35pm start time and left immediately after*. Frontman Gavin Hayes came on and said something along the lines of “we’re hypocrites,” and they kicked into their first song “Ode to the Sun” – a bombastic lead off from Catch Without Arms. I’m not sure what he was referring to regarding the “hypocrites” comment, maybe it was just the mood he was in…
As one of the several openers, they only got an opener-sized slot, but they made the most of it…

*– or perhaps call me dickish… I love music, but I don’t generally enjoy the 4 or 5 band “rock tours” – especially when 3-4 of the bands are underwhelming and the crowd is annoying (see POV video below). I will apologize, as I didn’t give Circa Survive a fair shake (or a shake at all). I’m sure they’re great. Sorry, after a 4 hour round-trip drive, a couple sour beers at Cascade Brewing and dredg was what I cared about. And I’m getting old (rock bands! get off my lawn!). Sorry. It is what it is. If the Circa Survive kids troll my comment section… well, it’s understood.

Over the Rhine swing through Oregon
Over the years, Over the Rhine has achieved indie cred, gained notability and had the opportunity to open up for Bob Dylan, Adrian Belew, The Cowboy Junkies and many more. They have been featured in Paste Magazine’s Top 100 Living Songwriters and Indie Rock A-to-Z lists. They span genres from folksy singer-songwriter pop to jazzy, sultry gospel to rustic, storytelling Americana. Whichever “sound” Over the Rhine produces, husband-wife duo Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist live their lives in their songs. They are a treasure for those who know their work: the gentle tinkling of the keys, melodic strumming on an old acoustic guitar, pontifications and allegories of their daily life on the farm outside Cincinnati and the ambrosial poetic words from Bergquist’s microphone oozing through the cracks amongst the notes. Detweiler makes being a musical beat poet a realistic modern possibility. Bergquist’s provocative voice is offset by her down-to-earth charm and humor. That charm makes what they do seem more tangible, real and relatable. They could very well be in your living room, singing for you alone.
Fresh off their “Across the West” train tour, Over the Rhine’s stop in Eugene & Portland will be a special, intimate duo show — featuring an array of songs from Detweiler & Bergquist’s 20 year history and their forthcoming album, The Long Surrender (due out 1/11/11).

REVIEW: Yard Dogs Road Show @ WOW Hall (Eugene, OR – 11/5/10)

Great show last night by local bellydance favorites / friends Audralina & Luminessah followed-up by a melting pot of sights and sounds from the headliner – Oakland’s Yard Dogs Road Show. [I have to apologize, as due to a “user error” I lost about half of my photos when transferring to my computer. Luckily Margarita was also snapping away.]
Opener Dela Project suffered the most from the lack of photos due to my error… sorry! They were a great gypsy-folk duo… nice sound and a wide array of instruments including saw, wood block, cello, as well as a traditional bag of tricks. Up next was a beautiful set of bellydance numbers by Lila, Regina & Ali of Luminessah with Audralina doing a couple of songs as a set break.
The bellydance set was more intimate than the last time I saw a MEDGE show at WOW Hall. Both Luminesseh and Audralina danced on the floor (not the stage), surrounded by candles and tunes coming from DJ Layla. Layla mixed it up for Luminessah’s last song (total improv!!).
The capper for the night was the Yard Dogs energetic set. I had never experienced the Yard Dogs, but they were equal parts street band, roaring ’20s flapper show, burlesque, hipster steam-punk, and rock circus – including a sword (and chair leg) swallower. It was a completely fun experience, and a nice set-up on the WOW Hall stage. The YDRS banners seemed to box the group in pretty tight on stage, but they pulled it off amazingly.

California Guitar Trio this weekend (11/7)
The California Guitar Trio (CGT) celebrates its twentieth anniversary with the release of Andromeda in October 2010 on Innerknot Records. “Andromeda represents a culmination of all our work together in the past 20 years,” says guitarist Bert Lams. “We have released numerous CDs over the years, but there’s none like this one,” Lams continues. “Andromeda is the first album containing nothing but original material, combined with improvised pieces. The integration of structured, thought-out pieces with the loose and spontaneous improvisations is something we’ve never done before.”
CGT is Paul Richards of Salt Lake City, Utah; Bert Lams of Affligem, Belgium; and Hideyo Moriya of Chiba, Japan. The trio first met in England in 1987 while studying with iconic King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. After touring together as part of Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists, the three guitarists convened in Los Angeles and founded The California Guitar Trio in 1991.
On Sunday, November 7th, They’re bringing their amazing guitar chops to the stage at Cozmic Pizza / The Strand in Eugene, OR. If you live nearby, it’s a show not to be missed!! Per Cozmic’s webpage, the show starts at 7pm. It’s only $12, and there’s great food and drink and fantastic music!

REVIEW: Nellie McKay @ the Shedd (Eugene, OR – 10/29/10)
I wasn’t able to attend the Nellie McKay show at the Shedd in Eugene on Friday (due to Sufjan Stevens in Portland the same night). I was completely torn, but I’ve had the opportunity to see Nellie several times since living here in the PacNW (four times in 3 years) and Sufjan far fewer times (i.e.- none).

Let’s face it. I just love Nellie McKay. I am extremely grateful that The Shedd here in little ol’ Eugene, Oregon, keeps managing to bring her back. She has serious musical talent, diversity, and a quirky, silly sense of humor that I dig. That makes a great show when she’s solo, but holy cannoli, there was a five piece backup band! THAT makes for a phenomenal, knock-your-socks-off show.
The introductions for the band members were extremely silly (“And just released on bail for jay walking…”) and the crowd was enthusiastic so I will likely have the names completely wrong and I am seriously sorry about that, ‘cause these guys were the bomb diggity. It was seriously hard to hear with the laughing and cheering. Corrections greatly appreciated!

Me-“*Giant Eye Roll*”This exchange could not happen at a Nellie McKay show. She skillfully flutters her way through Big Band, Reggae, Jazz, Blues, Pop, sweet old Doris Day tunes (and a number of Ella Fitzgerald tunes this time). The band was right there with her making everything fuller, brighter, grander, and making it difficult for some folks to stay put in their seats.
The crowd was fairly enthusiastic and really seemed to love “Mother of Pearl.” This is Eugene after all. There were even a couple zombies dancing around at the end.
Go See Nellie! She’ll make you think. She’ll make you laugh. She might make you whistle.

REVIEW: Sufjan Stevens @ Schnitzer (Portland, OR – 10/29/10)

So, the last few months has been a flurry of unexpected, yet superbly exciting information coming from Sufjan Stevens and Asthmatic Kitty. First was the tour announcement (on Aug 9th), then a week and a half later came the immediate release of the
All Delighted People EP, and less than a week later came the news of the new full length album The Age of Adz (pronounced ‘odds’). Outside of the orchestral The BQE piece, Sufjan had been silent for a couple years (which we recently found out was due to nervous system health issues). Within the past two months, he came roaring back in 2010 with a North American-spanning tour and two new adventurous albums (the “EP” is 58+ minutes).
The new music from Delighted and Adz is a little less accessible compared to Seven Swans or his “State” albums, but a little more poppy/accessible compared to BQE or Rabbit. I think the new music strikes a nice balance between the adventurousness and electronic-ness in his past music… possibly “A Sun Came! updated for the Sufjan listener in 2010.” While I don’t think it’s a repeat of A Sun Came! (at all) – that’s the best Sufjan repertoire comparison I can muster. It’s sweeping and glitchy, quiet and loud. But how would it translate into a live show?
Before we could find out, labelmate DM Stith hit the stage. He only played 20 minutes, but was a good warm-up. Nice singer-songwriter fare, with Sufjans’ horn section on “Thanksgiving Moon.” I’d heard DM’s music via AK samplers and free downloads. It never struck me as solidly as Sufjan has, but in the live setting, he seemed to carry himself well. After he did his tunes, he left to go put on shiny pants for Sufjan’s band. I was slightly disappointed that he left after only 20 minutes, but that disappointment soon went away as the anticipation for Sufjan mounted.
Sufjan and his 10 piece band hit the stage around 10 ’til 9pm in shiny outfits. His band was comprised of DM Stith on keyboards, two drummers, a 3-member torn section, a guitarist, bassist, and two backup singers/dancers. After a short hello, they went immediate into “All Delighted People” and didn’t stop with the new material until 10:30. I’d been listening to the new material for the past week, and glad they played some personal favorites: Heirloom, Futile Devices, The Owl and the Tanager, and the 20+ minute Impossible Soul.
Sufjan’s “slow jam” dancing to “I Walked” was charming. The projected graphics and dark, hallowed lighting during “Vesuvius” made my friend mention that it seemed like a weird, ancient worship service. The auto tune hip-hop near the end of “Impossible Soul” is one of my favorite parts, and it really worked in the live setting. I wish cameras had been allowed near the end, as a large luminescent diamond descended*, and Sufjan busted out the jams in front of the back-lit, strobe-diamond facade. While that was his most “rockstar moment,” most of the show, he was talkative, yet unassuming and grateful to the audience.

It was a brilliant show. He was quirky and subdued, gentle and cacophonous, amusing and bewildering, and all around charming. He saved the old tunes for last, and only three Illinois tracks made the cut. I got goosebumps as he hit the intro for “Concerning the UFO Sighting.” While the older tunes were nice (and I wish there had been more sprinkled in), I can honestly say that the new tunes hold their own. There’s a reason Sufjan has a piece of our hearts. Seeing the new songs live definitely elevated those albums to being amongst my favoritesfor 2010. After seeing them performed live, I think they fit better within his catalogue, too. I hope it’s not another 3+ years until I get to see Sufjan and his band of musicians again.
Sidenote: Sufjan’s one of the only artists who could have pulled me away from a reported, equally awesome Nellie McKay show in Eugene (check back tomorrow for Nellie McKay photos from Margaret O’Brien – who went in my place).

OBF 2011
The official press release is out… coming up next summer in Eugene Oregon (and beyond), the Oregon Bach Festival (OBF) is bringing in some great artists…
2011 Oregon Bach Festival, June 23 through July 10, 2011 in Eugene, Ashland, Bend, and Portland.
The headliners include:
- Yo-Yo Ma, as soloist in Osvaldo Golijov’s Azul, a showcase for cello written for the classical superstar. Jeffrey Kahane conducts this opening night concert Thursday, June 23, which also includes Bach’s Magnificat.
- Marin Alsop conducts a staged concert of Honneger’s Joan of Arc at the Stake. Directed by James Robinson, the inventive and versatile artistic director of Opera Theatre of St. Louis, the new production is slated for later performance in Carnegie Hall.
- Miguel Harth-Bedoya appears with his Caminos Del Inka ensemble. The collaborative group takes listeners on a musical and visual journey along the Inca Trail, with classical and folk music, authentic folk instruments, and stunning visual projections. Harth-Bedoya also conducts “Once More with a Twist,” small-group arrangements of such major works as Mahler’s fourth symphony.
- Matthew Halls, the versatile harpsichordist and conductor based in the UK but now earning accolades as a conductor with operas and the world’s major orchestras. Halls conducts the OBF choir and orchestra in music by Purcell, Handel, and Britten, and leads one of six Discovery lecture-concerts.
- Violinist Monica Huggett directs her Portland Baroque Orchestra in performances of Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas in OBF concerts in Portland, Bend, Eugene, and Ashland. South African opera newcomer Golda Schultz sings the title role.
Other artists and concerts include:
- Venezuelan conductor Maria Guinand, whose Schola Cantorum choir appears with OBF forces and headlines their own concerts
- Pianist Shai Wosner, who enthralled audiences as a last-minute fill-in for Jeffrey Kahane last summer
- Cellist Alban Gerhardt, performing the cello suites of Bach and Benjamin Britten over three concerts
- Jamie Bernstein, presenting cabaret and children’s classical concerts.
The full Festival schedule will be available February 14, 2011, when tickets go on sale.

REVIEW: Peter Mulvey & Jeffrey Foucault @ Sam Bond’s (Eugene, OR – 10/24/10)
Summing Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault‘s travelling show in one word would be: “authentic.” This was round two for me (link here for my Friday Portland review with photos); so I’ll keep it short and sweet.
They hit the stage at Sam Bond’s around 8:45 and played two great sets. The show was partially more of the same, but don’t take that the wrong way… it was definitely not a disappointment. Switching off on vocal duties, about a half originals and half covers. They also switched up about half of their setlist from the Friday show… great show as usual for these gents. Quite a talky crowd, but still a bit more subdued than a normal Sam Bond’s crowd.

Re-posting Friday’s NEWS from the stage:
Jeffrey Foucault has a new album out called Cold Satellite. Peter Mulvey has recorded a new duet instrumental album with longtime collaborator David “Goody” Goodrich – release next year(?). And the Peter & Jeffrey collaboration with Kris Delmhorst and Goody called Redbird has a second installment on the horizon. It’s already been mastered (woot!), and the last four songs will have the explicit tag in iTunes. It was recorded live, but they didn’t mention live in studio or live on stage. I guess we’ll see.
Kris Delmhorst (Jeffrey’s wife, fellow singer-songwriter) is coming to Eugene… Tsunami Books on Saturday, November 6th – 8pm. Make note!

REVIEW: Peter Mulvey & Jeffrey Foucault @ The Woods (Portland, OR – 10/22/10)

Last night was my first time to The Woods in SE Portland. One word: melikey. Nice cozy living room feel in the middle of an old funeral parlour. Random chairs, couches, beer & wine, candles, and a well laid out listening room. It was actually the perfect listening room for the likes of Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault. They had the early show last night; so we shuffled into the venue and found some seats… we got up close (but to the right of the stage). There’s not really a bad spot in the house… but a tip, if you come to a show at The Woods – show up early for the primo spots.
The guys got on the stage shortly after 7:30, and kicked into a hour and half set of songs, trading off in the vocal slot. They played a few originals, a few covers, told some stories, and warmed the crowd with their all around genuineness. Both of these men are prime performers – excellent songwriters and guitarists in their own right, but they really draw you in with their humanity, humility and… well… their charm.
They reminded me a lot of the Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt show from last fall in their trade-off approach and general witty banter. Their song selection was also excellent… I didn’t know all of the songs, but I loved them all.

Jeffrey Foucault has a new album out called Cold Satellite. Peter Mulvey has recorded a new duet instrumental album with longtime collaborator David “Goody” Goodrich – release next year(?). And the Peter & Jeffrey collaboration with Kris Delmhorst and Goody called Redbird has a second installment on the horizon. It’s already been mastered (woot!), and the last four songs will have the explicit tag in iTunes. It was recorded live, but they didn’t mention live in studio or live on stage. I guess we’ll see.

REVIEW: The Weepies @ Aladdin (Portland, OR – 10/20/10)

The Weepies have a new album out, Be My Thrill. It’s fantastic! And unlike their prior album, Hideaway, they’re touring behind it. To be fair, they weren’t able to tour behind Hideaway due to a new baby at the time. With Be My Thrill, they have a 3 year-old and a 6-month old… they’re on the road, and Oregon got a chance to see them twice on their “sponsored by 755 diapers” tour (Eugene and Portland). I caught the Portland show tonight…
Opener Lucy Schwartz and her two lovely backing ladies hit the stage around 8pm and played a 30 minute set that flew by too fast. All three women sang, with Lucy at the center but not the sole shining star. Mona was also talented and fantastic on providing the energetic percussion for the set. 
I didn’t catch the guitarist’s name – but again, a great part of the trio. Favorite songs were “Rain City,” “Seven Hours” (with Aqualung on the recorded version), and “When We Were Young.” She has a handful of albums, an EP, and songs on soundtracks. Her latest CD is Life in Letters… and if it’s anything like her live show, it’s a delight.
The Weepies hit the stage around 9pm, surrounded by guitars, candles, and Weepies-cover art lamps.
The light was low due to trying to rely primarily on candles for effect – which was quite nice aesthetically. Not great luck on the photos in low light (some below, though). The lighting person was also trying to be clever a bit too late or didn’t know the Weepies songs were generally short. A swirling sun, swirling green light, and fade-in blue light all came on during lyric-instigated songs… right at the end of the song (10 seconds left and boom goes the dynamite). Awkward at best for the lighting… it would have been best to stick to the candles. :)
Luckily the lighting didn’t impact the songs. And, in fact, the Weepies via candlelight was sublime. Deb and Steve played with a backing four-piece band that created some nice folksy, indie-rock, singer-songwriter splendor. They packed in twenty songs in their 90 minute set – roughly a third from Be My Thrill, and the rest from their other three equally-excellent albums.

Cascade Brewing Brewer’s Dinner (10/15/2010)
So, with my recent concert going and being out of town for work, I forgot to post about the utterly amazing Cascade Brewing Brewer’s Dinner last Friday (October 15, 2010). I was luckily at the table with owner Ron Gansberg, his wife, and one of their brewers John (last name escapes me). Super great beer-loving group at my table as well – Nicole, Drew, Josh and Josh’s friend (name also escapes me).
The normal meat-y affair had some changes made for me (thank you, Paul Kasten – sous chef @ Wildwood). The veggie options were great, and I’ll admit, just about anything paired with these delicious sour beers would be fantastic.
Here’s what I had (with notes below):
- Mixed Chicory Salad w/ Frite Galois: nice farmhouse beer, slightly sour, not as over the top as we’d get later in the night. Went great with the viniagrette and cheese in the salad.
- Fall Pepper Crostone w/ Vlad the Imp Aler: oh, my, this may have been my first taste of Vlad … love it. Spiced blonde quads, bourbon barrels, delightful. I picked up two bottles of it earlier this week (it was released in bottle on Saturday the 16th). My egg and crostone came out 10-15 minutes ahead of the meat-y dishes, and I was told by the server to eat it hot… I devoured it. Simple fried egg on a salsa-fied version of bruschetta.
- Matsutake Mushroom and Farro Risotto w/ Sour Rye: a younger one of the sour beers. I didn’t catch the age when Ron talked about it… 3 months, maybe? The risotto was phenomenal. It didn’t work with the rye beer, in my opinion; however both the food and the beer were excellent indepedently. The meat-eaters got a “rueben deconstructed” – cabbage salad with caraway seeds under a slice of battered and fried cornbeef, which was inspired by the rye in the beer.
- Grilled Eggplant and Cherry Tomato Salad w/ Autumn Gose: the autumn gose smelled “like halloween” to me, carmal nose, nutmeg, cinnamon, sea salt, orange peel. The eggplant was sliced nice and thin (i.e.- the only good way to eat eggplant). I forget how it paired, but since I didn’t note that it didn’t work, it probably worked. :)
- Oregon Star Tomato Soup w/ Sang Noir: sang noir was amazing, it’s a northwest sour red, ahed in pinot noir barrels with some of it being aged on bing cherries prior to the blend. Another “great independently” food & beer, but didn’t work paired. Great nonetheless, and again, I know the main pairings were for meat; so I’m eternally grateful for Paul at Wildwood for being awesome and making my nice and full.
- Russet Potato Gnocchi w/ Bourbonic Plague: what to say about the bourbonic plague? amazing, deceptive, will knock you dead without you knowing it. it’s strong (12.1% abv), bourbon barrel aged (hence the name), hints of dates, spiced double porter base, abbey normal yeast, 16-18 months in the barrel. 12.1%, yet drinks like a juice box. :) oh, it’ll knock you dead. great with the gnocchi!
- Pistachio Ice Cream w/ Apricot Ale: 2010 “raw” batch of the ale, unblended version, very fruit forward… nice with the subtler pistachio ice cream. The honey on the ice cream was a bit much for my taste, but I think this dish went very well with the beer. I think 30 oz. in on a high-octane beer tasting… well, it was bound to be awesome at this point.

Berbati’s Pan in Portland (RIP in 2011)
As reported in the Portland Mercury…
After 17 years of hosting live music, Berbati’s Pan will cease booking concerts starting the first of next year. The restaurant half will stay operational, while the venue itself will be split between a smaller room under Berbati’s control (that might, on occasion, host events), and an expanded space for Voodoo Doughnuts to better serve the tourists that see it necessary to lineup on SW 3rd during all hours of the day and night for a freaking doughnut. But the days of Berbati’s consistently hosting music are numbered.
“Attendance was really down and it’s not like rent went down with attendance,” explained booker Matt King. “Plus competition was a major factor as well.” King took over the booking reigns from Anthony Sanchez around April of last year, a job he did along with publicity for the club. “The writing had been on the wall, and the club has been struggling for a number of years before I was involved,” said King.
The final show in Berbati’s as we know it will be on New Year’s Eve. No word yet on the lineup.
I’ve only been there a few times, but they were always great shows… Berbati’s Pan will be missed.

REVIEW: Dead Kenny G’s & Trio Subtonic @ Mt Tabor (Portland, OR – 10/16/10)

OK, so I have to start this out with an apology. I absolutely wanted to see Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. I had been up in Portland for a third night in a row (driving back to Eugene late each night)… and was thus quite tired and I couldn’t possibly stay for their set (which was posted to start at 12:30am). It’s a running theme on this blog… I miss them for one reason or another. Last night wasn’t gonna be a missed opportunity. Alas, it ended up as such. Damn. SO, JFJO, I’m sorry. I’ll do better next time. I dig your new one, Stay Gold. I’m getting old. I have no other excuse for bailing at midnight.
So, unfortunately this amazing triple modern jazz bill turned into an pretty damn good double bill for me.
Trio Subtonic started things off around 9:30. No Radiohead as in the past, but still a great groove for their 45 minute set. They really are what I’d consider to be Portland’s own Medeski Martin & Wood. Great piano-based three piece combo. They’ve got two killer albums out over at CD Baby (aka the best indie CD seller in the universe).
Skerik, Mike Dillon, and Brad Houser hit the stage after a short set change…
While also a three-piece modern jazz combo, the Dead Kenny G’s definitely weren’t a repeat of Trio Subtonic’s sound. Fitting with their name, they bring powerful elements of punk rock and a “fuck you” attitude to a jazz trio. Mix some sax groove from Skerik with some harder edged beats, avant-garde squeaks, gonzo drumming, and punk vocal belts…
I’d seen them before (at Sam Bond’s in Eugene), but it was nice to see them able to spread out a little more on the Mt Tabor Theater stage.

REVIEW: Holy F*ck & Indian Jewelry @ Holocene (Portland, OR – 10/14/10)

First off… if you haven’t seen the adorable and infectious new music video for Holy Fuck‘s “Red Lights,” you need to go check it out now. OK, now that you’re back, on to the review…
This was the first time to the Holocene for me. It’s a nice venue, trendy looking bar, good beer on tap (Double Mountain IRA for me). They had a few side rooms with colorful lights, practically unusable mirrors in the bathroom, and odd fabric or paper christmas tree looking things in the performance area. In other words, everything that makes Portland its quirky, trendy self.
I got there near the middle of the first opener’s set. Clipd Beaks, from Oakland, were good from what I heard. Fuzzy rock with somewhat melodic vocals, use of trumpet, but primarily traditional rock sounds coming forth. I didn’t get any usable photos from their set as the lights were in force, yet.
Next up was Indian Jewelry, a four-piece from Houston, put out a 40 minute blast of tom percussion, dirty guitars and keyboards. They were a little warbly, drone-y in spots, and switched off between male and female vocalists. I enjoyed them, but I couldn’t really “re-sing” any of their songs… nice and percussive, genre-less but not aimless. I can see them working way better live than on record, but then again, I’ve been wrong about that before. Anyway, I’d recommend checking them out if they swing by your neck of the woods… cracked cymbals and all.
Holy Fuck started setting up immediately after Indian Jewelry’s set ended. They went on right around 11:30 and played a full hour, with encore. Not dissimilar from their Mississippi Studios show from earlier in the year… lots of tunes from Latin – which I am legally required to state in every mention of its name… it’s the best album of 2010 so far. Great groove-based live/organic electronic.
There were a few absent fab live tunes (Royal Gregory, Super Inuit, Milkshake), and I think I’m going crazy, as now I’m doubting my own note-taking… did they end with Lovely Allen? Or was it Safari? Or am I going crazy? Anyway… they played Red Lights, which smoked! I love Punchy’s bass on that track…

Great show as usual from Holy Fuck. But… severe lack of dancing again… or at least in comparison to the grooves. This seems to happen (i.e.- not happen) in Portland; so I don’t blame the band at all. They should swing down to Eugene next time… we’ll show ’em how to party! Pretty please!

PDX Jazz 2011 schedule
About 3 weeks ago, the Portland Jazz Fest (aka PDX Jazz Fest) announced their 2011 line-up and theme (Bridges & Boundaries – Jewish & African-American jazz playing together), well, last night, they announced the actual schedule for the main line-up. REVIEW: AMA Trio @ House Show (Eugene, OR – 9/25/10)

My second time to a lovely Rolling & Tumbling House Concert near UO campus in Eugene, OR. R&T is a great! They seem to bring in a lot of songwriters and world musicians. SO, this was only my second of many R&T house shows…
When I saw Amy Denio on the list with a new project, the AMA Trio, I didn’t want to miss it. I have been a fan of another of Amy’s bands – The Tiptons Sax Quartet. The AMA Trio is a bit different from the woodwind-forward jazz of the Tiptons, more world fusion / Latin American music. The AMA Trio is Amy Denio alongside Madeleine Sosin & Abel Rocha (who have a few CDs out under the name Correo Aereo).
They played traditional songs from Venezuela, Mexico and Argentina, as well as many of their own original tunes. All three were proficient multi-instrumentalists. Madeleine also played the violin, guitar, drum, shakers as well as singing on a few songs. Amy played accordion, clarinet, and drum. She sang on a few tunes as well. Abel was the primary vocalist (when they weren’t jamming), as well as played a mean set of guitars and harp. The ease of all three members switching from one instrument made it seem quite effortless.
Some of the most fascinating playing was what might be considered normally subdued instruments… Madeleine’s shaker playing made the little instruments seem way more distinctly rhythmic. She should teach lessons… because I don’t know how many times I’ve seen people “just shaking” them with no real purpose. Abel’s harp playing was also captivating… playing both the lead melodies and the rhythm parts. Amy stuck to accordion for more than half the set, when she broke out the clarinet, she had some nice flavors and solos to add to the songs. I dug the more jazzy textures she added when she was on reeds.

REVIEW: Boys Eats Drum Machine & Beats Antique @ McDonald / Eugene Celebration (Eugene, OR – 8/28/10)

Eugene Celebration 2010 “Raise the Roof” was in full effect on Saturday. This year’s Celebration was in a partnership with with Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity and Northwest Community Credit Union to fund the construction of two houses in the Eugene-Springfield community over the next three years.
We caught some good grub, interesting people watching, scoped out the pretty damn awesome electric vehicle (the Pulse made by Arcimoto)… and some music. The first band I saw was Upstate Trio. They’re from New York, but now live in the Eugene area. Great groove rock trio. I hope to catch them again soon.
Boy Eats Drum Machine was the next major act to take in. I saw him open for That1Guy in May (review link with photos below), and he put on a great show. Last night’s performance wasn’t any exception. Sax, turntable, drums, effects pad, loops, and all around great grooves from this one-man wrecking crew. Check out the stop-animation video for “Hoop+Wire“:

As mentioned a little over a week ago, Beats Antique is coming out with a new album in about two weeks. It’s called Blind Threshold. If it’s anything like their past two albums and an EP, it’ll be great.
They hit the stage around 11pm and played a fairly percussive set. Zoë Jakes wasn’t able to dance last night. She hurt her knee a while ago and is on doctor’s orders to take it easy for a while. So, we didn’t get the gorgeous dance performance that we’re used to (photos of Zoë dancing at prior events linked below). Despite the lack of dancing by Zoë, their infectious music got the rest of the crowd to pick up some of the slack. It was a great show, and hopefully they’ll be back soon, with Zoë in full health.
The overwhelming bass attacked our ears for both BEDM’s and Beats Antique’s sets. It got especially painful up in the balcony; so we stayed downstairs for most of the night. All in all, a great hour-long set from each band. Round 2 of Celebration for me today… I hope to catch 3 Leg Torso‘s set.

REVIEW: Toad the Wet Sprocket @ Crystal Ballroom (Portland, OR – 7/28/10)

Last night was my fourth opportunity to see one of my favorite bands, Toad the Wet Sprocket. I have been able to see frontman Glen Phillips many times, and he does throw in some Toad tunes here and there – but it’s not quite the same as the full conglomerate Toad experience with guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning and drummer Randy Guss. While Toad’s alternative melodic rock isn’t in my usual jazz or metal wheelhouse, I could never pass up a chance to see them… even if it meant making a 4 hour round-trip up to Eugene’s big sister, Portland.
Opener Hey Marseilles went on around 8 and played a full and energetic set of what they call “folkestral” music.
The seven piece band is from Seattle, and the guys were hard to pin down on any instrument. Several of the guys swaped out instruments for each song. They definitely had the folky, singer-songwriter band elements, but mixed in some great violin, viola, cello, accordion, trumpet, amidst traditional rock guitar, bass & drums.

Glen, Todd, Dean & Randy of Toad the Wet Sprocket hit the stage around 9pm with an extra player – Johnny Hawthorn on slide guitar, electric mandolin, and guitar. The packed Crystal Ballroom got a taste of something from every album…

There were no new songs, Lapdog tunes, or Glen solo material as they have done in the past. This was all Toad from all around their decade long catalogue. My favorites of the night were “Windmills” and “Whatever I Fear” – and some of their classics like “Brother,” “All I Want,” and “Walk On the Ocean” were crowd favorites as well.
The fact that Toad keeps touring on occasion keeps me hopeful that they may record again. In the meantime, check out Glen’s multitude of projects and Todd & Dean’s work as well (see links below). Support indie music!
