Sigur Rós – homage or fromage?
Reposted from the sigur-ros.co.uk site… Sigur Rós doesn’t allow for their music to be used in advertisements. So some advertising companies have gotten “creative” (*cough*) and pretty much ripped them off. Listen for yourself:

Official Tour Trailer…
RECIPE: Raw Vegan Pies
Raw Strawberry
& Apple Pies

For this month’s Vegetarian Supper Club in Eugene, Oregon, the theme is “RAW Talent“… all food needs to be raw, and then we’re having an unrelated talent show afterward. I had always wanted to try something from Jónsi & Alex‘s raw cookbook that came as part of their Riceboy Sleeps debut album; so I decided to make two pies from it for this month’s VSC. I modified the recipes slightly, but they are still quite true to the original. For more info on Jónsi & Alex, check out after the recipes… on to the food!
Raw Strawberry Pie
makes one pie
Crust
- 1 cup almonds
- 1 cup coconut
- 1 cup dates & 2 Tbl coconut oil (note: oil is solid at room temperature)
- pinch of salt
Blend items separately and one at a time using a blender or food processor. Add into separate bowl and kneed with hands. Scoop into pre-greased pie pan/tin and with hands form into a pie crust. If the dough is still too dry, you can a little bit of water (1 oz or so).
Note: if allergic to almonds (or pecans below), other nuts can be substituted. I’ve used Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, macadamia, cashews, et cetera for raw pie crusts. Measurements are probably the same for substitute nuts, but do some research if you’re worried.
Filling
- 2 cups coconut
- 4 cups frozen strawberries (original recipe was 2 cups)
- 1/2 cup agave nectar
- 2 Tbl coconut oil
- pinch of salt
- also: extra strawberries and coconut for top
Combined all items in blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add into pie crust. Top with extra strawberries and coconut. Let the pie refrigerate for at least 2 hours (I fridged it overnight).
Here is a video of Jónsi & Alex making it…
And here’s a close-up of my final version…

Next up… pie #2…
Raw Apple Pie (aka Arkansas Apple Pie)
makes one pie
Crust
- 1 cup coconut
- 1 cup pecans
- 1 cup dates
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 pinches of salt
- 2 Tbl almond butter
- also: 4 Tbl almond butter for layering
Blend items separately and one at a time using a blender or food processor. Add into separate bowl and kneed with hands. Scoop into pre-greased pie pan/tin and with hands form into a pie crust. If the dough is still too dry, you can a little bit of water (1 oz or so). Then spread another layer of almond butter (4 Tbl) over the pie crust.
Filling
- 4-5 apples (total)
- 1 cup dates
- 2 Tbl agave nectar
- 2 Tbl cinnamon
- also: extra almond butter or cinnamon for top
Combined half of apples (2 to 2.5 apples) with 1 cup dates and 2 Tbl agave nectar in blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add into pie crust. Cut other half of apples into large chunks and put into pie crust. Top with extra almond butter or cinnamon. Serve now or later.

Now the promised extra info about Jónsi & Alex. Jónsi Birgisson is the lead singer of the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. Within the past year, he released an ambient record with his partner Alex Somers – called Riceboys Sleeps – and his debut solo album, Go. It’s all quite gorgeous stuff. Click below for some of my favorites of their albums, and a review of Jónsi’s recent Portland show (April 2010):
This is a mainly music-based blog. If you stumbled in on a recipe search, check out my other recipes, like vegan biscuits & gravy, spiced biscotti, vegan cactus chili, vegan bananas foster, mushroom dumpling stew, strawberry cornbread muffins, fruit spring rolls, grilled coconut-rum pineapple, vegetarian s’mores pouches, pumpkin-infused vodka cocktail, creamy vegan chocolate pudding, cute olive penguins, raw blueberry cheesecake at THIS LINK.
If you’re only here for the music… well, stay tuned. Concerts from Antibalas, Bill Mallonee, and Toad the Wet Sprocket coming up by the end of the month.

Jónsi and the volcano
Regardless of the travel havoc it caused, the Icelandic volcano is at least a wonderfully, gorgeous and immensely beautiful part of nature. Here is some video footage of Eyjafjallajökull paired with the song “Kolniður” from Jónsi‘s solo album Go:
Video shot by Sean Stiegemeier on a Canon 5d mkII. Jónsi is the lead singer from Sigur Rós and a musical ambassador out of Iceland. It doesn’t strike me as odd that his music mirrors the beauty of his native landscape.
REVIEW: Jónsi of Sigur Rós @ Roseland (Portland, OR – 4/13/10)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM
Jon Thor Birgisson aka “Jónsi” has a majestic voice and a penchant for clever, extravagant, and utterly gorgeous stage show that converts the already beautiful music into something worthy of an art exhibit. His voice is well known in the indie rock scene via his long history bringing the enigmatic Sigur Rós to our shores/ears.
Sigur Rós is on a hiatus while many of the members’ families welcome new children into their lives; so Jónsi decided to follow-up his last album (Riceboy Sleeps with his partner Alex) with a “solo acoustic album.” That “solo acoustic” album morphed into what became GO, a not-so-acoustic album. Go fits in with the most recent Sigur Rós album (Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust). It’s a “more accessible rock” affair full of the ideals, quirks, and high quality craftsmanship we’ve come to expect.

That high quality craftsmanship shows in Jónsi’s decision to bring in 59 Productions to work up his tour stage. If I wasn’t sold on going to see Jónsi before, the lead-up to the show was almost unbearable after seeing the 59 Productions behind the scenes video. More on that later… first, the opener…

Death Vessel (aka Joel Thibodeau) hit the stage around 8 and played a 35 minute set (6-7 songs). His songs were gentle acoustic numbers, and his voice reminded me a lot of the late Jeff Hanson (nice falsetto). The crowd seemed a little restless near the end, but I thought Death Vessel put out an enjoyable set.

Jónsi went on right at 9pm and started the show with just an acoustic guitar solo tune, Stars in Still Water. Shortly thereafter the band joined him and the stage show began. The walls and projectors played for about half of the songs in the set, and ranged from butterflies, to other animals, to a rainstorm that turned into a flood. Some of the coolest effects were the burning stage-pieces early on, as well as the water flood. It was quite astonishing how well done everything was… and it didn’t take away from the music at all.

Setlist: ~85 minutes
- Stars in Still Water (solo)
- Hengilás
- Icicle Sleeves (K14 or Red Bicycle)
- Kolniður
- Tornado
- Saint Naive (K7)
- Sinking Friendships
- Go Do
- Boy Lilikoi
- K12
- New Piano Song (K365)
- Around Us (with acoustic piano intro)
- Encore: Jonsi New Guitar Song
- Animal Arithmetic (Jonsi donned a colorful headdress)
- Grow Till Tall
The fave songs of the night were Tornado, Go Do, Boy Lilikoi & Grow Till Tall – as those were the ones that resonate with me the most from the record. All in all, it was an utterly superb show, and it ranks easily in my favorite shows ever (which includes many Sigur Rós shows, too). The stage, the songs, the voice, the beauty… I hope Jónsi comes back through soon – either solo or with his “main band.”
Speaking of bands… the band members for Jónsi’s solo tour are Alex Somers on guitar, Úlfur Hansson on bass, þorvaldur þorvaldsson on drums and Ólafur Björn Ólafsson on piano

from Jonsi’s website:
The shows which start in North America in April, will feature a brand new band and a stage set designed by 59 Productions. Both these things promise to be drop-dead amazing. The idea of the stage collaboration with 59 Productions is to bring together the worlds of theatre and music in a new and hopefully unique way, in order to create something other than the hoary old cliches that pass for innovation in rock’n’roll. The ideas remain very much “in development”, but there will be some surprises, for sure. Here’s a maquette of how things might appear. Cute, huh?

So… excited…

2010 anticipated albums
So, the year end and decade end recaps are in process (the monkeys I ordered are in the back room typing away) … I needed something to fill the gap… here are some artists who are expecting to release new material in 2010, all of which I’m looking forward to…

The Album Leaf‘s A Chorus of Storytellers, My Brightest Diamond‘s Shark Remixes box set, Go from Jónsi Birgisson of Sigur Rós, French singer Jeanne Cherhal‘s Charade, George Hrab‘s Trebuchet, 12 new albums from John Zorn, Mike Patton’s Mondo Cane and hopefully Crudo (if they’re both not put off due to Faith No More reunion touring), Derek Webb‘s Democracy Vol 1 (and he’s even recording with Caedmon’s Call for a 2010 release or two), guitar phenom Kaki King, maybe the Secret Chiefs 3 will finally release Book of Souls (it’s their “Chinese Democracy”), Eisley & Perma (a side project with Sherri from Eisley), Ellery from Cincinnati, Ty Tabor of King’s X, A.N.M. featuring Doug Pinnick of King’s X and Jimi Hazel of 24-7 Spyz, Ken Andrew and Co’s Digital Noise Academy, Trent Reznor’s just announced new Nine Inch Nails album, Silverchair are working on one, Radiohead are hitting the studio (maybe something out by year’s end), and… Ani DiFranco – I mean, it’s inevitable… right?
Plus many more great albums due out in 2010, I’m sure.
I {lessthanthree} Jónsi
SO, Jónsi of Sigur Rós is a rare bird…
No, he’s not a stuffed penguin. But his glimpse into the studio for the upcoming album, Go, is fun and just what I’d expect from him. All I know is that if his promised tour hits anywhere close to me, I’m sooooo fucking going. Pardon my French, but… Je baise ainsi aller à ce concert.
He’s a rare bird, in that I think musically he hits me in a way that others don’t and/or can’t. The little snippets of sound coming from Jonsi.com are spot on what I want to hear. Plus he’s got the aesthetic approach that can do no wrong in my book. Check out his recent PR shots (shot by Lilja & Inga Birgisdóttir and posted on his Facebook page):
Proof for aliens. Icelandic people can’t possibly be human. They make things that are too beautiful.

more Jónsi news… reposted from sigur-ros.co.uk…
jónsi’s debut solo album “go” will be released march 22nd 2010 in europe, march 23rd in usa. the album contains nine songs, most of which are sung in english, and was co-produced by jónsi, alex somers and peter katis (the national, interpol). jónsi will be embarking on an extensive world tour throughout 2010, of which more information will be annonced later.
“go” initally began as a low-key acoustic record, but, according to jónsi, “somewhere along the line it just sort of exploded”. the result is a joyful and dramatic album, featuring ecstatic string, brass and woodwind arrangements by composer nico muhly (antony & the johnsons, grizzly bear), as well as warmer, more melancholic moments.
in the coming weeks, jónsi’s official site www.jonsi.com will be updated with exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and videos of jónsi and collaborators making the record. in addition you can download the track “boy lilikoi” for free, and listen to samples from the album by clicking the “jónsi” letters. artwork on the site was created by jónsi’s sister inga birgisdóttir (press images for the album were shot by jónsi’s other sister lilja birgisdóttir).

New video of Jónsi Birgisson & Alex Somers for their piece entitled “Sometimes I Get Scared“…
(warning, it’s not like Sigur Rós or Riceboy Sleeps… at all…)
“We started the video sometime in 2004 and forgot about it for a long time, then discovered it later and finished it. So don’t worry, we’re not going in a new direction of all crazy distortion songs or anything! We’ve always flirted with dirty sounds, but dirty sounds that are still very melodic. In this one we really let ourselves make something aggressive but still melody based… It was different and fun…”

It can now be pre-ordered on Amazon or the deluxe edition from http://www.jonsiandalex.com/. They’ve been giving away Boy 1904 for new people who sign up for their mailing list.
