Nine Stories!
In this episode: The new Masada Quintet with special guest Joe Lovano, the Jenny Owen Youngs‘ video that I somehow missed, Nellie McKay‘s Election musical, Fanfarlo for $1, the deaths of JazzTimes & Jeff Hanson, the resurrection of Futurama, a new Wussy video, and Asthmatic Kitty’s most excellent Library Catalog Music Series…
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The new Masada Quintet with special guest Joe Lovano just came out for June on Tzadik Records. It’s the original Masada Quartet (John Zorn on alto sax, Dave Douglas on trumpet, Greg Cohen on bass & Joey Baron on drums) plus pianist Uri Caine… plus special guest tenor sax Joe Lovano. Holy cow!!! It’s the first official studio release from the Masada Quartet since 1999’s י [Yod] (or 2005 if you count the unreleased/rarities compilation Sanhedrin). This album is bound to be at the top of my “best of” list for 2009.
This video from Jenny Owen Youngs came out in September 2007. How did I miss it? It’s a brilliant singer-songwriter cover of rapper Nelly‘s “Hot in Herre” (so take off all your clothes). I bought the iTunes single… great stuff:
Nellie McKay is writing a musical based on the book/movie Election. Read more about it over on Brooklyn Vegan blog.
Fanfarlo just put on their debut album, Reservoir, for $1. Fanfarlo is a London-based band founded by Swedish musician Simon Balthazar. Nice textured indie pop… think Sigur Rós meets Sufjan Stevens. The album, in full, is available for only $1.00 until July 4th, 2009 at http://www.fanfarlo.com/.
The economy took another print-media victim. This time it’s the death (or “temporary suspension”) of JazzTimes magazine. The 38 year old magazine couldn’t maintain readership in the new era of online content. It’s a sad day, as it was a great magazine. I hope it’s able to come back later in some form or another under new ownership, as mentioned in the Howard Mandel article.
Whispy singer-songwriter Jeff Hanson died last Saturday (6/5) after an accidental fall on his cement-floored apartment in St. Paul, MN. Jeff was known for his feminine vocal style and songwriting/sound similar to late indie rocker Elliott Smith (who also died young). He had three great albums out on Kill Rock Stars. I hate to sound selfish, but I’m bummed I missed him when he recently came through Portland. We lost another one, far too young…
In “Oh Sweet, Futurama’s On” News, the resurrection of Futurama is eminent. Much like Family Guy, the popularity soared even after being originally canceled. Futurama had some straight-to-DVD movies recently, and it will return with new 26 episodes on Comedy Central in the winter 2010.
A favorite band of mine from Cincinnati, Wussy, has a new “acoustic from an RV” video of “Maglite.” They recently put out their 3rd full length album, and it lives up to the quality and momentum in their prior two albums (plus 1 EP). Check out the video and then check out the album at Shake It Records:
Asthmatic Kitty’s most excellent Library Catalog Music Series just came out. The naming of the series sounds… boring. However, it’s really great instrumental music. There are three issues thus far: 900X: Music for Lubbock 1980, Law of the Least Effort: Music for Measurements, and Casey Foubert/James McAlister: Music for Drums. My favorite is the 900X one. Really, really good electronic, post-rockiness. If you liked a more “sane” version of Sufjan Steven’s Enjoy Your Rabbit, I bet you’d like the LCMS. Check it out at Asthmatic Kitty Records.
REVIEW: Holy Fuck @ Doug Fir Lounge (Portland, OR – 6/4/09)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM
I love my job. I get to be in towns that quite often host artists I like to see… so I don’t have to drive up to make a special trip. Well, this time, it was for my second time seeing the instrumental, avant-groove, live electronic band from Toronto – – Holy Fuck. While their name may be offensive to some, their music is delicious. I tried to make the “gotta eat there while in Portland” stop at Blossoming Lotus, but downtown was PACKED – no parking to be found; so I crossed the River and checked out The Farm instead. Then I scuttled off to the venue to meet some Eugene friends and take in some great music.
Crocodiles went on first, and they played about a half hour. It was a singer & guitarist playing to a drum machine or tape. It wasn’t too shabby. Two man bands are usually more miss than hit, but these guys had some good songs and rocked out fairly well.
Holy Fuck took the stage around 10:15 and played a jam-packed hour or so. I forget how infectious these guys are, even when not playing something all that melodic (though they had plenty of groove last night as well). We got right up front, and I was able to snap some pics and a video or two (see below). I was glad to see the audience show up, too… at first, it was looking grim, like a 10 person crowd. By HF show time, the MFDF was filling up quite nicely. Much groove, much film scratchin’, oft screamin’ and looping, with a thumping rhythm section…
Songs are harder to distinguish when there are no vocals (i.e.- no official “setlist” here). I know they played The Pulse, Super Inuit, and Lovely Allen, and I’m pretty sure they played Milkshake, Safari, Frenchy’s, Jungle, maybe Royal Gregory. Those last five are just a guess, though. I do know that it was a bitchin’ show!! It’s great to see them in progressively bigger venues. First Newport, KY’s Southgate House “parlor” (i.e.- the very small room upstairs) to the real venue of Doug Fir Lounge as the headliner. A+… and I hope it’s not another 2+ years until I get to see them again.
Holy Fuck “The Pulse” @ Doug Fir Lounge, 6/4/2009
The videos are just “OK,” but not too shabby for a digital camera (not a digital video camera), if I do say so myself. Regardless of the video quality, quite frankly, this show is probably one of my favorite shows this year so far.

This little blurb in from the Llama Appreciation Society today (6/1/09)…
It is with great pleasure to confirm SILVERCHAIR have been back in the studio working on a bunch of new songs.
I expect this means… early 2010 for a new album? In any case… awesome news!!!

RECIPE: Vegan Bananas Foster with Coconut Vanilla Bean vice cream
(photo: Food Network)
Vegan Bananas Foster
I made some vegan Bananas Foster and Coconut Vanilla Bean vice cream* for Veggie Supper Club tonight. Our theme was “Cajun”… so what better than a classic New Orleans flambé dessert? Both recipes below are super easy, and super delicious. And, to be fair, making Bananas Foster into a “vegan recipe” is easy – you just swap out the butter for a vegan spread. This recipe paired with the vegan coconut vanilla bean vice cream is stupendous.
*– vice cream = vegan ice cream (Jeff Rogers’ Vice Cream at Amazon)
There were different recipes for Bananas Foster available online, and the first one I tried was waaaaaay too saucy… it made for a lot of leftover juice and didn’t seem to have the consistency I’ve known in Bananas Foster. Here’s the recipe I ended up going with (a modification of several online recipes):
Ingredients:
serves 4
- 1/4 cup vegan spread, butter substitute (aka 4 tbsp or 1/2 stick)
- 1 cup dark brown sugar
- 3-4 bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise or into coins
- 1/3 cup dark rum (Myers, Whalers, etc)
- 2 tbsp banana liqueur (DeKuypers, etc)
- ground cinnamon
- a bbq lighter or other fire source
Steps:
- Melt the vegan spread (butter) and dark sugar in a pan until smooth, creamy paste. I used a big wok, as I was making a large batch and wanted room for the flames, too.
- Add cut bananas and sautee for 2-3 minutes over medium-high heat.
- Combine rum & liqueur into a microwave safe dish and warm in a microwave slightly (30 seconds).
- Add rum & liqueur to bananas and light on fire, stir to stoke the flames… **
- Sprinkle cinnamon while flames are present for a small fireworks display.
- Serve over ice cream and enjoy!
**– The “showy” way to do this is to light a shotglass on fire, or if using a gas stove light a metal ladel full of the rum mixture and pour into the bananas. We had a small accident with a ceramic dish when testing this out at home prior to the Veggie Supper Club; so we opted for the safer way. Add the rum mixture directly to the pan and light with a long bbq lighter. Use precautions, have a friend handy with water or a fire extinguisher. I’d recommend not doing this over a gas oven if you’re tentative. Seriously folks, be careful. :) It’s all fun and games until someone lights their kitchen on fire.
Vegan Coconut Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
This recipe comes from Jeff Rogers’ Vice Cream recipe book. I modified it slightly as the measurements weren’t realistic (size of coconut milk can) and the texture (not using the bean skin). I made a double batch, and again, it worked great with the Bananas Foster…
Ingredients:
makes 1 quart
- 2 cans of coconut milk (14 oz each), use regular not “light”
- 1 cup pitted, diced medjool dates (used as a sweetener)
- 3 vanilla beans
- Note: You will need an ice cream maker
Steps:
- Add 2 cans of coconut milk to a food processor or blender. For ice creams, you want a high fat content; so refrain from using the light (or “lite”) variety of coconut milk.
- Add 1 cup of pitted, diced medjool dates to the coconut milk. If you can find these prepared in the stores, good luck. I just bought some in the bulk section and pitted and diced them myself. Medjool dates are a great natural sweetener, and they also help to solidify the vice cream.
- Cut the very tips (on either end) and slice vanilla beans length-wise. Use the knife (or a small spoon) and scrape out the vanilla bean seeds from the pod and add to the mixture. The seeds are where the flavor is held. For an example of how to do this, check out this informative YouTube video from Dyann Bakes. The seed yield you’ll get is more than what she got…
- Blend the mixture until smooth, approximately 1 minute.
- Chill for a few hours in the fridge.
- Add to ice cream maker and follow instructions included with your ice cream maker.
This is a mainly music-based blog. If you stumbled in on a recipe search, check out my other recipes, like vegan biscuits & gravy, spiced biscotti, and vegan cactus chili at THIS LINK.
How do you say “four” in Icelandic?
(Jónsi with Sigur Rós in Portland, Oct 2008)
Well, 2009/2010 is bound to be a good period for things Sigur Rós‘ related. I had heard about the first three, but just found out about the fourth item. It was the icing on the cake…
- Sigur Rós singer/guitarist Jónsi Birgisson and longtime partner Alex Somers are on the cusp of releasing the audio debut from their collaboration Riceboy Sleeps (they released a small arty booklet a year or two ago). The first leak was on the recent Dark Was the Night compilation (with Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond, The National, Iron & Wine, David Byrne, The Decemberists, etc). Read more about Riceboy Sleeps here.
- Jónsi also has a solo album in the works. While being called “ecstatic,” being the voice of Sigur Rós, I doubt it’ll fall too far from the tree. Read more about Jónsi solo here.
- Keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson also has his musical pen in the solo work well… he’s writing the score for the film Odine. Read more about Kjartan’s score here.
- And… Sigur Rós are in the studio working on their 6th (traditional) studio album, the follow-up to last year’s Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. Not much in as far as details, outside of it being “melodic but much less noisy and more ‘out there’ than previous albums.” This excites me, as I loved Takk and Med sud, I loved-loved-loved-loved the more “out there-ness” of Ágætis Byrjun & ( ). This album is expected sometime in 2010. This was originally posted on sigur-ros.co.uk.

Another Mike Patton Soundtrack
Mike Patton [Faith No More, Mr Bungle, Ipecac, etc] & Justin Broadrick [Godflesh] will contribute to the soundtrack for an upcoming Alan Moore photographic novel on Lex. This comes hot off the heals of Patton’s Crank 2 soundtrack…
Lex founder Tom Brown says that the deluxe release will include the book – which Brown describes as a “photographic novel” rather than a graphic novel like Moore’s “Watchmen” or “V for Vendetta” – as well as art prints, a two-hour audiobook recorded by Moore (possibly on a memory stick) and the soundtrack on vinyl. It is not yet clear if the soundtrack will get a separate release on CD or as a download, but Brown says he wants this to be a special release and was partly inspired by Radiohead’s deluxe version of “In Rainbows.”
REVIEW: Jerry Seinfeld @ Hult Center (Eugene, OR – 5/21/09)
Mini-review…
It’s been a while since seeing Jerry Seinfeld live. I was always a big fan of that television show that he was on… you know… um, what was it called? Oh, yeah… Benson. I hear he kinda “faded away” after that early-80s stint on Benson . ;)
The opener was Larry Miller. He was the doorman on Seinfeld, plus he’s been in other television shows and movies (like Best in Show). Funny stuff, but he only did about 20-25 minutes of material. It was odd, because not even a minute later… on comes Jerry… at 7:28pm*…
Well, third time seeing him… Jerry did a lot of familiar jokes, and it was great. Horse racing, cellphones, “going out,” old people in Florida, being a parent… He did an hour’s worth of material, and then came back on for about 10 minutes of Q&A. Complete with a classic “Hello, Newman.” :)
*- I only made note of the time as it shocked me that it was starting soooo early.

dredg, radiohead, dave douglas, and a holy eff bailout
dredg‘s new album, The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion, is gonna be good great. Their Portland show in early April was TOPS! I like “I Don’t Know” better as a lead off, but regardless of what I think, here’s the video for “Information“…
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Radiohead are hitting the studio again to follow-up the revolutionary pay-what-you-want album from 2007, In Rainbows. Colin said, “it was really good. It was really noisy and chaotic and really fun…. We’re at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re looking at all the bits and thinking, what next?” Read more on the BBC. I’d post a version of Radiohead’s “Just” done up in Legos, alas it’s been long removed due to terms of service blah blah blah.

Toronto instrumental rockers Holy Fuck have benefited from the auto bailout. I’d like to think of my tax dollars going directly to them being able to make album #3; so all-in-all, I’m happy about seeing their music as part of a Chrysler commercial:

REVIEW: Yann Tiersen @ the Wonder Ballroom (Portland, OR – – 4/29/09)
(that’s unnatural)
So, I was soooo stoked about seeing French musician Yann Tiersen for the first time. His albums are quite delightful. I, like many people in the States, first heard of him via the soundtrack/score to Amelie. But then based on the Brooklyn Vegan (photo credit above) and photobear 2009 tour reviews, I got a little sad. No accordion, very little violin, and Yann on guitar for most of the night!? Pardon my French, but… viens m’enculer!? Viens m’enculer!?
Well, I didn’t know how it would turn out; so I figured it’s still a rare occasion to see Yann in the U.S. I already had the tickets, it was only 2 hours away… so… I gotta go. No photos allowed at the venue. Boo.
The opener, Skinni Dip yogurt (on Burnside – downtown), was awesome. The opener (at the venue), Asobi Seksu, played far too long. I’m having a bad streak of uninteresting / painful openers. Sorry. Just didn’t like them at all.
Yann Tiersen and his band came on around 9:45pm, and the first two solid songs were rock numbers that had very little resemblance of a Yann Tiersen song. The 3rd song was finally one I recognized, but only vaguely as it was turned into some sort of messy, too fast rock blast.
No try on the set list… it’s too difficult to remember song names originating in a foreign language to mine. Also, the set that we caught didn’t even seem to be a Yann Tiersen show. I mean, I have 95% of his catalog (all but the latest Tabarly soundtrack)… and the songs were completely foreign to the crowd. Had I wanted to go to a decent/mediocre rock band play a poorly mixed show, I would have gone to my local rock venue and paid $3 to see what was going on that night. I went to see Yann Tiersen’s songs in a live setting. Unfortunately, we really didn’t get that. I mean, I’m all for artistic expression, and the artist doing what they feel is their artistic direction versus what the fans “want” – – but to some extent on a live tour, you’d expect to give the fans what they expect… again, at least to some extent.
Maybe this was his French way of pulling a prank on us stupid Americans. It just makes you wonder. Oh well… if he comes back, I’m not buying tickets until I read some reviews with more mention of accordion solos. :)
