John Zorn – The Dreamers’ Christmas (Tzadik 2011)
Update 10/7: go back HERE for CD/vinyl/45 rpm/mp3 download ordering info.
Posted on (Tzadik designer) Chippy’s Facebook page earlier this weekend…

The biggest surprise of the year is John Zorn’s beautiful Christmas CD. Zorn has hand picked seven of his favorite Christmas songs, penned two lovely originals and they are performed here in classic Dreamers style with plenty of exciting solos, exotic colors and catchy lyricism. Filled with a joyful holiday spirit, innocence, a touch of nostalgia and a charming lyricism, this is music for all ages that will make you smile with delight from the very first notes. As a special treat, vocalist Mike Patton delivers an intimate and heartfelt rendition of “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” making A Dreamers Christmas an instant classic, and an essential CD for any contemporary Christmas celebration.
This album will also feature The Dreamers band: Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft, Kenny Wollesen, Trevor Dunn, Joey Baron, and Cyro Baptista. It will be out in CD and vinyl LP.
My guess is it’ll hit in October or November as Tzadik tends to not release anything in December. I’m looking forward to it. I mean, I tend to not like Christmas music that much (there are only a few). I find it funny that a record label entrenched in Jewish music and jazz would put out a Christmas album with Santa on it… but, well, that’s John Zorn for you. Not following the protocol.
And that’s why we love him!
Update 7/28, the cover for the 45rpm vinyl single…
ha’fway 2011
Happy belated 235th birthday, United States!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
So, here are my faves of the first half of 2011… it’s all bound to switch around by year’s end (click album art for sound samples):
Artist – Album (style)

- Over the Rhine – The Long Surrender (folk-americana)

- Elysian Fields – Last Night on Earth (lusty indie-pop)
- Iron & Wine – Kiss Each Other Clean (whispy indie rock)
I didn’t get a few that already came out this year (yet)… the new Hiromi, Gangpol & Mit, and whatever “et cetera” that the cool kids are listening to these days; but they may make it to the list at the end of the year.
The 2nd half of 2011 promises to bring some potential great ones, too… a few more from John Zorn, (including The Dreamers Xmas CD & the Rovo Sax Quartet collaboration), Secret Chiefs 3 Book of Souls (maybe), Maynard James Keenan’s Puscifer (2nd album), some digital releases from A Perfect Circle, the doomy Bohren & Der Club of Gore, Opeth‘s 70s throwback album, Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson‘s 2nd solo album, My Brightest Diamond is wrapping up one in the studio (will it be out in 2011?), Ani DiFranco always has something coming out (it’s been a while though), probably something from one of Mike Patton‘s other bands (Fantômas live DVD, Tomahawk’s 4th album, more?), and I’m sure another dozen or more that I’ll dig from Tzadik.
Favorite concerts of 2011 (so far):

Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 2 #4
One a month, from March to December 2011…
Derek Webb’s Democracy Vol 2… This month, it is “One” by U2 (posted on 7/1). Derek has a long affinity for these Irish gents. My guess is that when this one came up in the vote winners pile, he paired it with this past weekend’s Nashville U2 covers show and then seeing U2 at VU/Nashville (#U2360NAS).
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 2 is a continuation of the covers project Derek started last year. The fans get to nominate songs and then vote once the nominations are tallied. Here’s what he’s done in 2010 and 2011 to date (you can still go back and buy this volume):
- January 2010: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
- February: Coldplay – Fix You
- March: Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’
- April: Gnarls Barkley – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul
- May: Sufjan Stevens – Chicago *a personal fave*
- June: U2 – Where the Streets Have No Name
- July: Huey Lewis & the News – Power of Love
- August: The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby *a personal fave*
- September: Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence
- October: Radiohead – Karma Police *a personal fave*
- November: Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah
- December: Robert Robinson – Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
- January 2011: off
- February: off
- March: Cee-Lo Green – F**k You *a personal fave*

Democracy Vol. 2 is a series of subscription based albums of cover songs that Derek will be recording annually, starting January 2010. Those who participate will not only receive the exclusive album, but will democratically decide what songs Derek will record.
Ever wished you could hear Derek cover your favorite Beatles song? Or Backstreet Boys song? Or even re-record your favorite old Caedmon’s Call song? Here’s your chance. Songs will be nominated and voted down to 10. Derek will record them (demo quality) and deliver them digitally (320kbps MP3s), one song per month for 10 months (March to December). Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb!
Radiohead – Caribou/Jacques Greene Remixes
The first in a series of Radiohead remixes on 12″ vinyl will be released on Monday 4th July (or Tuesday in the US & Canada). The series kicks off with Caribou remixing “Little by Little,” and a remix of “Lotus Flower” by Jacques Greene.
You can find the vinyl in your local independent record shop, but if not, you can buy by mailorder here from the 4th. If you don’t have a record player, digital versions will be available here, here, here and here. Or you can just listen to them here at Radiohead.com.
More 12″ remixes will be released every couple of weeks over the summer until we run out of remixes… or summer. On the next one they’ve got Nathan Fake (Morning Mr Magpie) and Mark Pritchard (Bloom).
Fair Use in Digital Media (the story of Kind of Bloop)
A Perfect Circle Portland fans, my photos will be posted by midday today.
Almost two years ago, I posted about an interesting 8-bit tribute album of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue called Kind of Bloop. I like it, more in concept than execution, but I liked the music nonetheless. Well, the guy who put it together Andy Baio (who also helped start Kickstarter) got in hot water with the original photographer Jay Maisel for Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) violations. He settled out of court, but was he in the wrong? Personally, I think not.
I mean, his use of the photo was altered in a way that appears consistent with the fair use provisions in the copyright law. Check out the full read over on the waxy.org article “Kind of Screwed“…
What do you think? And what do you think about these transformative recreations?

What is art, and can derivative works be safe from legal harassment? Where does the line get drawn?
A Perfect Circle in Portland!

Nellie McKay – New Video & Touring behind her musical ‘I Want to Live!’
I Want to Live! a musical death row revue, conjures the life story of “a woman of dubious moral standards…often a guest in seedy bars…”
“Inspired by the 1958 movie of the same name, I Want to Live! combines Nellie McKay’s virtually unlimited gifts as a singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, ukulele player, mimic, satirist and comedian into a show that is much deeper than its surface might suggest,” writes Stephen Holden for The New York Times. “In the most lighthearted way they evoke a heartless environment of social injustice in which people who fall through the cracks are invisible to everyone else.”
“Pretty darned unique,” adds Michael Musto of the Village Voice.

Packaging Art : Design in front of the Music
A big piece of what still links me to music is the artistic approach that goes into the whole package. Sure, break it all down, and the actually music hitting my ears is the “most important” component, but I still dig the physical product (CDs & vinyl).
Two of my favorite record labels go out of their way to create stunning packaging: the John Zorn-run Tzadik Records and the Mike Patton co-owned Ipecac Recordings.
For Zorn, the die-cut and gorgeous lettered detail in Tzadik’s Masada Book Two series jumps to the forefront, as do many of the stunning titles in the Archival series (The Dreamers, etc). For Patton, the gold-embossed Mit Gas from Tomahawk was a first step, and the Peeping Tom & Mondo Cane packaging was colorful and stupendously took Ipecac’s level of art-packaging to a new level.
Both labels obviously believe in the physical artistic value, otherwise, they wouldn’t bother. Well, this post delves a little bit into that process with two designers for Tzadik & Ipecac, respectively…
In a recent interview with Chippy from Tzadik…
Poor quality digital artwork is a shame because the original art/packaging is an extension of the concept. Most people therefore will not be able to fully appreciate/experience beyond the music. At the same time, the low quality is a good reason to truly really seek out the hard copy because there is so much more beyond the digital world. People forget about the beauty of books and print. The paper, the binding, the thread, glue, etc. There’s a reason why artists/designers use a certain ink, stock, varnish, diecut, emboss/deboss, etc. Dismissing this part of the experience minimizes the experience.
READ the FULL INTERVIEW with CHIPPY
Aaron Lazar from Tzgani Design worked on the most recent Book of Knots release from Ipecac. The original design would have cost too much ($6-7/per unit), but would have been a three piece laser etched packaging design that would cradle a CD (printed in aqua, yellow and orange) and would function as a working astrolabe. Check it out in higher-resolution. I wish this could have come to fruition, but I guess you have to be realistic in your artistic pursuits, too.
It is works of art like this that make me seek out more than just a download version. Even if “CD quality” 320 kbps, it still seems hollow to me. And more than just design… with music moving to a cloud-based platform now, here are eight reasons why vinyl is cleaner than “the cloud”… READ HERE at DigitalMusicNews.
Steven Wilson solo album cover art (video reveal)
I suppose so no one can easily steal the jpeg image? Anyway, here’s the “cover art video trailer reveal” for Steven Wilson’s upcoming Grace for Drowning album, due out in September.
For more about the album, I did a “here’s all the info we know thus far” recap a few weeks ago.
Coldplay – Every Tearderp Is A Waterderp
British knockoff rock act Coldplay have announced an Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall digital EP, featuring two more brand new tracks “Major Minus” and “Moving To Mars.”
The digital EP comes out Sunday (6/26). It also comes out on CD and 7″ vinyl on Monday (UK) and Tuesday (US). The title track is already available (see Amazon for sound sample).
If Chris Martin releases a video of him dancing by himself in an alley, well… you know where he got the idea.

Sorry, I hate to be negative (or do I?). I just have very little patience for Coldplay.

Puscifer ‘Conditions of My Parole’ & Tour {new A Perfect Circle & Tool music, too}

As posted in SPIN this morning, Puscifer is releasing their second full-length studio album this fall. Album name – Conditions of My Parole. Street date – October 18, 2011. Puscifer is the brainchild of Tool/A Perfect Circle frontman and Caduceus winemaker Maynard James Keenan.
“Man Overboard,” the first single from the album, will be available via iTunes and other digital service providers on July 19. Conditions of My Parole was recorded in Jerome, Ariz. this spring with tracking done amidst the wine barrels from Keenan’s Caduceus Cellars. The album was produced by Keenan, Mat Mitchell, and Josh Eustis. Contributing musicians for the new album include the aforementioned Keenan, Mitchell, and Eustis as well as Carina Round, Juliette Commagere, Matt McJunkins, Jeff Freidl, Gil and Rani Sharone, Jonny Polonsky, Tim Alexander, Devo Keenan, Alessandro Cortini, Sarah Jones, and Jon Theodore.
From SPIN…
After the album drops in October, Puscifer will hit the road for a two-month tour. Maynard says he’s still working out the details, but fans can expect variety show-style gigs like the band’s last jaunt in 2009, but with “a lot of changes and new approaches. We’ll be doing a lot of filming and posting more videos online, too.”
Also news about APC and Tool…
But even when he’s deep into Puscifer mode, Maynard’s other projects are never far from his mind. After their summer tour, A Perfect Circle “might put out a track or two,” he says. “The energy is good, so there’s always the potential for a future.” And Tool? “We’re writing,” he says.
