Another new streaming song from Ben Folds Five from the upcoming The Best Imitation of Myself retrospective… “Tell Me What I Did” is now streaming over on Stereogum. Check the blog below for the first new BFF song, “House.” One more new BFF song is out there, “Stumblin’ Home Winter Blues” will likely show up soon on some other music blog (Pitchfork? Spin?)…

[video] Steven Wilson “Track One” (from Grace for Drowning)
Lasse Hoile’s new video for “Track One,” taken from Steven Wilson’s second solo album Grace for Drowning. Slow start, then some bombast… then returning… quite gorgeous.

Steven Wilson’s Grace for Drowning comes out September 26th. The mega deluxe & vinyl editions are available from gfd.com. The digipack CD is for pre-order on Amazon (only $11).
New Ben Folds Five song “House”
Ben Folds Five will go down in history as one of the bands that actually looked like they were having fun on stage. When they broke-up in the Fall of 2000, a bit of happiness died. Ben went on to do a lot of solo work (some Five-ish, some not), bassist Robert has stayed active in the NC music scene, and drummer Darren has put out a few gorgeous records with his band Hotel Lights (where he sings and plays guitar). In fact, I just found out that Hotel Lights put out a new one last week (Girl Graffiti).
Well, with Mr Folds’ upcoming retrospective 3-CD boxset, The Best Imitation of Myself (due out October 11, 2011), Ben Folds Five got back in the studio and recorded a new tune entitled “House.” Two other new BFF songs are on the collection: “Tell Me What I Did” and “Stumblin’ Home Winter Blues.” No word on if any more new BFF, but anything coming out of an 11-year gap is good news to me.
You can stream the new song at NBC’s The Sing-Off page. You can pre-order the retrospective at the Amazons. No word on a digital / mp3 download version of the retrospective yet, but I’m sure it’ll be out there on iTunes and Amazon soon enough.

Tori Amos “Carry” video + pre-order + tour updates
The first track to get video treatment for Tori Amos’ upcoming Night of Hunters album is the final track, “Carry.” Sonically, it’s a lush stringy ballad – quite fitting for Tori’s move to classical label Deutsche Grammophon.
I’m curious how the rest of the album is, but I guess I’ll have to wait until it hits on September 20th. The CD, CD/DVD deluxe and vinyl versions are currently up for pre-order on the Amazons (digital/mp3 download version to follow). Tori’s Fall tour dates are below as well. I’m still bummed about no Oregon date, but hope there’s a 2nd leg added at some point…

Sufjan Stevens “Futile Devices” on WNYC
One of the most gorgeous songs from The Age of Adz… Sufjan Stevens plays “Futile Devices” on WNYC Soundcheck.
The video for “Pleasure Principle” was posted earlier this week. The full show (audio) is available as a podcast and on WNYC.com. On the audio, he also performs “Heirloom” and talks with host John Schaefer. The album, which came out last year, is for sale on Amazon for only $5 (digital version).
Get your own Fol Chen song…
Fol Chen makes some pretty fun, electronic indie rock (check the videos at the bottom). They are also about to venture into the realm of making some impromptu music with a “Verbal Algorithm Composer-Free Song Generator.”
Walker Art Center – Open Field
Minneapolis, MN
Thursday, July 28th, 2-7pmSamuel Bing and Sinosa Loa of the band Fol Chen (Asthmatic Kitty) will produce a customized, one-of-a-kind song for each person who participates in the Fol Chen Verbal Algorithm Composer-Free Song Generator. This is a one-day event only!
Come fill out a survey about your experience at the Walker, turn your survey in to Bing and Sinosa Loa, and receive a CD of your very own custom song minutes later. At the end of Summer Jubilee, they will release the songs as a digital download Open Field EP.
Samuel Bing is a songwriter and co-producer for Fol Chen, whose two albums of danceable, art-pop have garnered praise from the likes of The New York Times, NME and Pitchfork. They have remixed and/or been remixed by David Bowie, Liars, Baths, and legendary club producer Junior Vasquez. They also covered Prince for SPIN’s “Purplish Rain” compilation. Their song “In Ruins” was featured on Showtime’s Weeds and an episode of CSI: NY in which a victim is murdered over Chat Roulette.

My Brightest Diamond ‘All Things Will Unwind’ (Oct 18, 2011)
So, if I could have a blog solely dedicated to the music of Shara Worden/My Brightest Diamond, I would. I ‘found’ her via her opening slot for Sufjan Stevens’ Avalanche tour (Indianapolis 2006?). Her voice amazed me, and she has quickly become one of my favorite vocalists. She has operatic voice training, a clever wit, charming lyrics, and an indie-rock DIY mentality.
Her third studio album under the My Brightest Diamond moniker* has been announced… All Things Will Unwind will be released October 18, 2011.
For those unfamiliar, MBD creates some fantastic orchestral indie pop. She’s offering a FREE download of a song from the forthcoming album…

*– She has a few MBD precursors under the band name “AwRy” (harder to find), plus a few remix EPs, several cover tunes on compilations, and several fantastic side-projects like Sarah Kirkland Snider’s Penelope, the spoken word Letters From Distant Cities, and the upcoming Kickstarter for her backing band yMusic’s debut album – Beautiful Mechanical. All worth checking out as well.

Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 2 #4
One a month, from March to December 2011…
Derek Webb’s Democracy Vol 2… This month, it is “One” by U2 (posted on 7/1). Derek has a long affinity for these Irish gents. My guess is that when this one came up in the vote winners pile, he paired it with this past weekend’s Nashville U2 covers show and then seeing U2 at VU/Nashville (#U2360NAS).
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 2 is a continuation of the covers project Derek started last year. The fans get to nominate songs and then vote once the nominations are tallied. Here’s what he’s done in 2010 and 2011 to date (you can still go back and buy this volume):
- January 2010: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
- February: Coldplay – Fix You
- March: Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’
- April: Gnarls Barkley – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul
- May: Sufjan Stevens – Chicago *a personal fave*
- June: U2 – Where the Streets Have No Name
- July: Huey Lewis & the News – Power of Love
- August: The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby *a personal fave*
- September: Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence
- October: Radiohead – Karma Police *a personal fave*
- November: Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah
- December: Robert Robinson – Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
- January 2011: off
- February: off
- March: Cee-Lo Green – F**k You *a personal fave*
- April: Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer
- May: The Beach Boys – God Only Knows
- June: U2 – One
~Dan – np: Secret Chiefs 3 – Eyes of Flesh :: Eyes of Flame

Democracy Vol. 2 is a series of subscription based albums of cover songs that Derek will be recording annually, starting January 2010. Those who participate will not only receive the exclusive album, but will democratically decide what songs Derek will record.
Ever wished you could hear Derek cover your favorite Beatles song? Or Backstreet Boys song? Or even re-record your favorite old Caedmon’s Call song? Here’s your chance. Songs will be nominated and voted down to 10. Derek will record them (demo quality) and deliver them digitally (320kbps MP3s), one song per month for 10 months (March to December). Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb!
Nellie McKay – New Video & Touring behind her musical ‘I Want to Live!’
I Want to Live! a musical death row revue, conjures the life story of “a woman of dubious moral standards…often a guest in seedy bars…”
“Inspired by the 1958 movie of the same name, I Want to Live! combines Nellie McKay’s virtually unlimited gifts as a singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, ukulele player, mimic, satirist and comedian into a show that is much deeper than its surface might suggest,” writes Stephen Holden for The New York Times. “In the most lighthearted way they evoke a heartless environment of social injustice in which people who fall through the cracks are invisible to everyone else.”
“Pretty darned unique,” adds Michael Musto of the Village Voice.
