Sufjan Stevens – All Delighted People

20th Aug 10 (Fri) 2 comments

So, announced and released today, August 20th… Sufjan StevensAll Delighted People EP…

http://sufjanstevens.bandcamp.com/

1. All Delighted People (Original Version) 11:38
2. Enchanting Ghost 03:39
3. Heirloom 02:55
4. From The Mouth Of Gabriel 04:03
5. The Owl And The Tanager 06:38
6. All Delighted People (Classic Rock Version) 08:07
7. Arnika 05:13
8. Djohariah 17:02

A near hour-long “EP”… yippie… also from Asthmatic Kitty:

The EP, All Delighted People, is built around two different versions of Sufjan’s long-form epic ballad “All Delighted People,” a dramatic homage to the Apocalypse, existential ennui, and Paul Simon’s “Sounds of Silence.” Sounds delightful, yes! The song was originally workshopped (oh we hate making workshop a verb, but time is money!) on Sufjan’s previous tour in the fall of 2009. Other songs on the EP include the 17-minute guitar jam-for-single-mothers “Djohariah,” and the gothic piano ballad “The Owl and the Tanager,” a live-show mainstay (and Debbie Downer if you ask us; what’s it doing on a “Delighted” EP?). If you don’t have five dollars, you can stream the EP for free right on Bandcamp. Or if you’re into tactile sensations, we are making All Delighted People available on single-CD and double-LP formats later in 2010 (we’re aiming for December, fingers crossed). 180-gram vinyl.

Floss // Steven Wilson

2010… rollin’ in with some music news…

Floss, a jazz band that is part of Seattle’s Monktail Creative Music Concern, has a new album out called Vitamin A.  It’s for sale at their shows… or for a limited time as a freebie on their website.  Download it, and if you like what you hear, send them some coin (buy it)!

Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson started his Cover Versions singles (CDR and 7″ vinyl) back in 2005.  They are always one new SW song and one “mysterious” cover version (CV1 was Alanis Morissette’s “Thank You”).  Coming the next few months will be the 6th and final CV release, complete with a box to house all six.  SWHQ/Headphone Dust will have the CDs once available (no conclusive date was mentioned – – but the original SW song “An End to End” is now streaming on his MySpace page).  ToneFloat Records will have the CV5 & CV6 vinyl singles once released.

Kim Taylor – Little Miracle

21st Dec 09 (Mon) 1 comment

Cincinnati artist Kim Taylor just put out her latest full length, Little Miracle (and I mean “just”).  It’s digital only at this time (but DRM free)… pick it up via her Nimbit store at http://kim-taylor.net/

I’ll be picking it up tonight when I get home… and you know what this means?  My Top 25 for 2009 is not done (crap – I just finished it yesterday).  Eh, it just means my current #25 (U2‘s No Line on the Horizon) is very likely getting bumped.

Support indie music!  With Kim Taylor, you can’t go wrong!  Srsly.

Ellery – Down, Down, Down EP

25th Nov 09 (Wed) Leave a comment

My favorite husband-and-wife songwriting duo from Cincinnati is at it again… the holiday EP Down, Down, Down from Ellery is out.  This time it’s pay what you want (min $4).  Available for streaming at bandcamp, too.  I generally abhor Christmas music, but this one is pretty darn good.  The first two songs are brand new originals, the 3rd song is from their holiday EP a couple years ago, and then they do two classics…

They also have a streaming only sample from their forthcoming album… “Blame Me“…

Sufjan’s The BQE

16th Sep 09 (Wed) Leave a comment

So… I’ve heard the new CD from Sufjan Stevens, called The BQE.  (Thanks Asthmatic Kitty for the pre-release download.Wow. No vocals, but very much a Sufjan album, though.  The instrumentation borders on classic Sufjan instrumentals from Illinoise and Michigan (specifically the flute trills) mixed with more conservative chamber music (piano, strings, horns, tympani, et al).  It also jumps into a very Enjoy Your Rabbit moment with “Movement IV – Traffic Shock.”

AK DOWNLOAD: Sufjan Stevens – Movement VI–Isorhythmic Night Dance with Interchanges (FREE MP3)

The BQE tracklist

  1. Prelude on the Esplanade (2:56)
  2. Introductory Fanfare for the Hooper Heroes (1:07)
  3. Movement I–In the Countenance of Kings (5:19)
  4. Movement II–Sleeping Invader (4:34)
  5. Interlude I–Dream Sequence in Subi Circumnavigation (3:33)
  6. Movement III–Linear Tableau with Intersecting Surprise (4:09)
  7. Movement IV–Traffic Shock (3:24)
  8. Movement V–Self-Organizing Emergent Patterns (3:45)
  9. Interlude II–Subi Power Waltz (0:28)
  10. Interlude III–Invisible Accidents (0:54)
  11. Movement VI–Isorhythmic Night Dance with Interchanges (3:17)
  12. Movement VII (Finale)–The Emperor of Centrifuge (3:51)
  13. Postlude–Critical Mass (2:59)

I think it fits very well within Sufjan’s oeuvre.  A fan of his instrumental tunes interspersed within his State’s records should truly enjoy The BQE.  The limited edition, which is on order for me, has presumably a lush packaging with a full-color booklet accompanying the vinyl.  I can’t wait to crack it open…

It’s available for pre-order from Amazon and Asthmatic Kitty (and other eTailers):

And a complete side-note, Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt is planning releasing a Nick Drake-ish acoustic solo album (Blabbermouth link).  Man, I love music.  Seriously.  Frank was right.  It’s the best.

JFJO hates me. Placebo loves me.

I’m either out of town, in town at another show, out of town at another show, or barricaded out of a show whenever Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey comes to town.  Anyway, JFJO is back in Eugene on 9/18, and I’ll be up at Sunny Day Real Estate in Portland.  Oh well, I guess I shouldn’t complain… JFJO comes through twice a year it seems… I’ll try again next time…  Tour dates below…

The Michael Jackson “memorial” service was yesterday (even though he is not dead)… JFJO & Friends did their own takes on some MJ on NYE 2008 and posted them to their website last week.  You can download their live takes of “Billy Jean” and “Thriller” via the links (links from a recent JFJO email).  Vocally, the MJ cover tunes… are… um… are they drunk? Anyway… they’re free.
