Secret Chiefs 3 – Europe 2011

26th Jan 11 (Wed) 7 comments

Trey Spruance and the Secret Chiefs 3 haven’t really swung around the U.S. since 2008 (Portland review linkfrom their last full US tour?).  Lately South America and Europe are getting some love.  While I’m bummed for no chance to see them as of late, I’m glad they’re active…

SECRET CHIEFS 3 Europe tour
from 16th June to 18th July 2011
Confirmed dates TBA
Booking contact : europe@webofmimicry.com

I think that’s also their first new press photo in a while.  If my brain is working correctly, that’s (L-R) Jai Young Kim, Trey Spruance, Ches Smith, Toby Driver Rich Doucette, and Timb Harris.  Will we see Book of Souls in 2011?  Here’s hoping!!

Tres Mountains (King’s X’s dUg Pinnick & Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament)

25th Jan 11 (Tue) 4 comments

A new “super group” of dUg Pinnick from King’s X, Richard Stuverud of the Fastbacks, and Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam has a name and an album coming out and a selective tour in March 2011.

Tres Mountains (aka Tres Mts.)

Go to http://tresmts.com/, sign up for their newsletter, and get a free download of “My Baby.”  The debut album Three Mountains comes out in March 15th, 2011 (CD, LP, digital).  Update 2/3: I just got my ticket for the Seattle show at the Shoebox (3/16).  Apparently Mike McCready (also from Pearl Jam) is playing with them. Woot!

Update 3/8: get the record digitally here:

I’m hoping good things from this group.  I tend to really dig bands and side-projects where dUg gets involved.  The first track “My Baby” needs a bit warming up for me, but I dig the vibe.

Storm Corrosion (Steven Wilson & Mikael Akerfeldt)

7th Jan 11 (Fri) 1 comment

Dec 2011 update: There’s an official FB page (other one now unlinked), and the album is expected on Roadrunner in April 2012.  GO here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Storm-Corrosion/187831801312141

March 2012 update: The pre-order for the album is HERE.

For a while now, Porcupine Tree‘s Steven Wilson and Opeth‘s Mikael Akerfeldt have been talking about an official collaboration (outside of SW’s involvement in Opeth production, etc).  Well, it now has a name…

STORM CORROSION

They have “churned out” about only 15 minutes of music so far, but the goal for the group is to do “something really, really special and really different” – whatever that means for these prog-metal gents.

Per Steven Wilson’s FB page, Storm Corrosion won’t occur until at least after September 2011 (when SW’s 2nd solo album comes out).  Opeth also has a new one due in the Fall of 2011; so we shouldn’t expect any Storm Corrosion until 2012, most likely.  Its naming is at least a good sign of things being “in the works.”

Mike Portnoy is also involved, but I think to a more limited extent compared to SW & MA… though, with Portnoy’s being ousted from Dream Theater and done on the road with Avenged Sevenfold – perhaps he’s more freed up.

Tenacious D working on Album #3

6th Jan 11 (Thu) Leave a comment

Tenacious D news, as reported in Paste

Four years have passed since Tenacious D released The Pick of Destiny, but a new album from the D-ynamic Duo should be released by the end of the year.

Jack Black and Kyle Gass will be returning to familiar subject matter on the new record. “We’re gonna be talking about love, there are gonna be some songs about sex and there’s gonna be songs about food,” Black recently told Spinner.

At the moment, The Greatest Band in the World’s new album is still untitled and lacks an official release date, but Black says that they are about halfway through the writing process. “We need another few months,” he said. “But you can look for it at the end of 2011.”

Black added that another feature film adventure starring The D might not be out of the question either. “This is strictly a musical endeavor, but I would not rule out another film,” he said. “Although it would probably be on the lower-budge.”

Read more on Spinner, too.  Hopefully it’s as good as their debut, and not like that deuce they dropped with Pick of Destiny.  I could use another “Tribute“-like effort…

Help 12-yo blues singer Savanna (Kickstarter)

4th Jan 11 (Tue) 1 comment

I’m here to promote music.  When that music is also made by friends, it’s even more fun to promote.

When I moved to Eugene, I got involved in a most excellent vegetarian supper club.  The founders, Josh & Sharon Coen, are super great… it’s a really fun group.  Well, when we moved here, we met their (then) 9 year old Savanna.  About two years ago, she started singing and has been gigging more and more in the Eugene area… whether it be Saturday Market, Kidz Rock, Grrrlz Rock, or blues festivals – it’s been great to see Savanna and her talent grow.

Well, now 12 years old, she’s starting a Kickstarter campaign to get her first CD made.  If you’ve never heard about Kickstarter, it’s a great new way to be financially active in an independent venture – music or otherwise.  I’ve done a couple Kickstarters recently (Kevin Moore‘s Shine and GdEB‘s Jazz).  Anyway, it’s a great way for those who want to support art to put their money where their mouth is.

Fan funding is what it’s all about.

So, my question for you… do you want to help this talented 12-year old blues singer from Eugene, Oregon, make her first CD?  Of course you do!  As little as $10 gets you the music. Go to:

http://tinyurl.com/coen-kickstart

To find more about Savanna, go to:
http://www.savannacoen.com/
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Savanna/136772699673273

If you can help, please do… her goal is to raise $3,000 in 90 days to be able to get this off the ground.

Jazz Stamps – coming March 2011

4th Jan 11 (Tue) Leave a comment

Thanks to Aural Addict for the scoop…

Jazz stamps will be coming out at the USPS in March 2011…

Paul Rogers designed the stamp based on several previous pieces of work by David Stone Martin, Alex Steinweiss and others (see below).

The only requirement given to Paul was that the letters J-A-Z-Z appear in the design and that no recognizable performer be depicted. Beyond that, it was up to Paul to communicate the feeling of jazz.  I think he nailed it.  Read more and see some excellent prototypes & sketches over on Paul Rogers’ site:

Michael Kelsey – Submerged (2011)

3rd Jan 11 (Mon) Leave a comment

Michael Kelsey is quite possibly the most intensely amazing guitar player I have ever seen – and I’ve seen a lot of them.  He’s a phenom in the live setting.  He pops, he jumps, he loops, he bends… I’ve heard his style being described as “progressive aggressive acoustic.”  It fits!  Once, I even saw him change a guitar string while still playing.  He didn’t even miss a beat…

Last week I put out a post about anticipated albums in 2011.  Had I even known about the Michael Kelsey’s surprise attack, it would have made that list – easily!  Well, his 6th studio album Submerged was announced on Thursday, December 30th – and it’s officially out now!!!

If you happen to live near West Lafayette, Indiana – you should go to the CD release party on January 15th, 2011 (FB event link).  He’s also doing a little midwest tour (I miss being able to see him now that I live out in Oregon).  If you are a downloader, the album is out now on the Amazons

If you dig CDs (like I), it’s available via his website with a super-easy PayPal purchase option:
http://www.michaelkelsey.com/music.cfm

Mine is on the way as I type this.  For a taste of what the album’s like:

2011 anticipated albums

30th Dec 10 (Thu) Leave a comment

So, the year end recaps are in process (instrumental list maybe later today or Friday) … I needed something to fill the gap… here are some artists who are expecting to release new material in 2011 (some are carryovers from 2010’s anticipation), all of which I’m looking forward to…

Kevin Moore‘s Shine (digital out now, CDs en route), dredg has one due at the end of March, Over the Rhine‘s The Long Surrender, Earth‘s Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1 (in February), Iron & Wine‘s Kiss Each Other Clean, Mogwai‘s Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will, Reptet‘s At the Cabin, My Brightest Diamond‘s as of yet untitled (she’s in the studio), a bunch of new stuff from John ZornDerek Webb‘s Democracy Vol 2 (10 cover songs for 2011), maybe the Secret Chiefs 3 will finally release Book of Souls (it’s their “Chinese Democracy”), Eisley‘s The Valley, Jelly Jam with Ty Tabor of King’s X/John Myung of Dream Theater/Rod Morgenstein of Dixie Dregs, Goddamn Electric Bill‘s Jazz, A.N.M. featuring Doug Pinnick of King’s X and Jimi Hazel of 24-7 Spyz, Ken Andrew and Co’s Digital Noise Academy (maybe), Silverchair are working on one (didn’t hit in 2010), Radiohead have put in studio time in 2010 (maybe something out by year’s end), Glen Phillips likely has a few in the hopper (RemoteTreeChildren #2?  new Toad?  new WPA?  new solo?), Opeth is in the studio, Steven Wilson with Mike Portnoy & Mikael Akerfeldt (of Opeth) too, Sufjan Stevens tribute album (due out in March), more chapters from Celldweller‘s Wish Upon a Blackstar, new tracks from Billy & Maynard’s A Perfect Circle, Mike Patton‘s electronic Fantômas or Peeping Tom #2, and… Ani DiFranco – I mean, it’s inevitable… right?  Well, not always, she totally missed 2010 (as of now, no studio albums out in 821 days / 257 since a live EP on Record Store Day 2010).

Plus many more great albums due out in 2011, I’m sure.

‘Speak With Ghosts’ by Anakronic Electro Orkestra

27th Dec 10 (Mon) 3 comments

One of my favorite EPs of 2009 was Anakronic Electro Orkestra‘s The Yiddish Part.  My only complaint with the EP?  It was too short.  Well, in mid-November 2010, unbeknown to me at the time, they came out with their debut full-length Speak With Ghosts.  It’s digital only at this stage, with Amazon’s mp3 Download department being the best choice (which I found out after I bought it on iTunes).  Anyway, well worth the coin spent!

AEO hail from Toulouse, France, and crank out a mighty fine mixture of drum & bass mixed with Eastern European-fused klezmer.  Their new album is a 40+ minute shuffle through a modern klezmer forest – including one song featuring David Krakaeur (another favorite musician of mine).  I think AEO is also great for fans of Beats Antique and Balkan Beat Box.

I just downloaded Speak With Ghosts, and it’s definitely vying for a favorite in 2010.  See, this is why it’s so hard to put these lists out.  December 26th, and I have a new one pop on to the list. :)

Silverchair/Daniel Johns short film + free music from Owen Pallett

22nd Dec 10 (Wed) 2 comments

Two unrelated music new tidbits…

First off, Daniel Johns (frontman for Aussie rock trio Silverchair) will be part of a short film that received a grant under the 2010 Screen NSW Emerging Filmmakers Fund.  Josh Wakely, an experienced actor and writer and an emerging director, will have the opportunity to make My Mind’s Own Melody, a short musical drama he has written with Daniel Johns.  http://www.chairpage.com/news

Second, Owen Pallett just put out a free demo EP on soundcloud.  It’s instrumental except for a spot vocal appearance from Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond).  It is delightful.  Get it while it’s still a free download.  For other great Shara Worden guests spots… well, the Clogs record (with Sufjan Stevens guest spots, too) and Sarah Kirkland Snider‘s Penelope concept album rank high this year.

Yeah, my “Best Of” lists are still in the works.  It’s still 2010; so I’m not late. (I hate it how some people start putting out their lists in October… argh…)

John Zorn’s new art gallery

20th Dec 10 (Mon) Leave a comment

Reposted from A-to-Z media blog

A to Z is excited to announce that our long time friend/client/unyielding supporter, John Zorn, has created a new online art gallery –  Obsessions Collective that has just gone live. The site has been beautifully designed by Heung-Heung Chin whose own work will be exhibited on the site and can be seen at the top of this post.

The aim of this non-profit site is to serve as the conduit between living, cutting edge artists who work outside of the gallery system and art collectors and patrons who seek to interact and purchase art directly from the artists themselves with no interference or meddling from a third party.

In true Zorn fashion, 100% of the income derived from the sales of the artwork goes to the artist directly. No commission or bullshit admin fee’s will be charged on any of the pieces purchased.

John has created this site simply to shine a light on the many talented artists he is friends with and to encourage art collectors to open their minds and wallets to discover, nurture and support  truly independant artists who are deciding to make real art for art’s sake.
