Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 2 #3
If you came here for the U2 Seattle review, GO HERE.
One a month, from March to December 2011…
Derek Webb’s Democracy Vol 2… This month, it is “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys. I generally hate/hate/hate this song… I blame Jonatha Brooke & Jars of Clay’s more schmaltzy versions. I’m digging Derek’s more layered version.
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 2 is a continuation of the covers project Derek started last year. The fans get to nominate songs and then vote once the nominations are tallied. Here’s what he’s done in 2010 and 2011 to date (you can still go back and buy this volume):
- January 2010: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
- February: Coldplay – Fix You
- March: Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’
- April: Gnarls Barkley – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul
- May: Sufjan Stevens – Chicago *a personal fave*
- June: U2 – Where the Streets Have No Name
- July: Huey Lewis & the News – Power of Love
- August: The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby *a personal fave*
- September: Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence
- October: Radiohead – Karma Police *a personal fave*
- November: Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah
- December: Robert Robinson – Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
- January 2011: off
- February: off
- March: Cee-Lo Green – F**k You
- April: Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer
- May: The Beach Boys – God Only Knows
Also, Derek & his wife Sandra McCracken are hitting the road in the Fall for a house concert / living room show tour for their upcoming TN EP. GO HERE if you can host.
Democracy Vol. 2 is a series of subscription based albums of cover songs that Derek will be recording annually, starting January 2010. Those who participate will not only receive the exclusive album, but will democratically decide what songs Derek will record.
Ever wished you could hear Derek cover your favorite Beatles song? Or Backstreet Boys song? Or even re-record your favorite old Caedmon’s Call song? Here’s your chance. Songs will be nominated and voted down to 10. Derek will record them (demo quality) and deliver them digitally (320kbps MP3s), one song per month for 10 months (March to December). Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb!
REVIEW: U2 & Lenny Kravitz @ Qwest Field (Seattle, WA – 6/4/11)
photo by Soren McCarty (Denver show)
U2 is one of the biggest rock bands in the world. They’ve been a band for almost 35 years – all the same four guys. Sit back and think about that for a minute. Sure, they haven’t been without struggles, but they’ve been a solid force in rock music for a long, long time. Saturday night was my third time to see them (PopMart 1996, Elevation 2001), and based on the reviews and photos I had seen, I knew I was going to be blown away…
Qwest Field started being configured for U2’s 360º Tour earlier that week. The 360º Tour features the largest concert stage structure ever and a 360-degree staging/audience configuration that allows fans to surround the stage from all sides. The large parking lot full of semi-trucks wasn’t just for Bono’s sunglasses supply. Check out the GeneStout.com media recap of the stage build out (with Mike Savoia’s photos – more from Mike below, too). See a time-lapse build-out of the Denver show (FB video link).
We positioned ourselves at near the north side of the outside of the loop for the show – as we hadn’t gotten there early enough for the inner loop. After running into a bad batch in the crowd (i.e.- drunk as hell d-bags), we backed off and watched from a nice safe distance. Opener Lenny Kravitz hit the stage around 7:30 and played a solid 50 minutes set. One new song, and a cadre of his hits. Cindy Blackwell was not on drums – that was the only noticeable absence. Lenny had some ear-monitor issues near the end, which was frustrating him, but he put on a great show regardless.

Lenny’s Setlist: 50 minutes
- Come On Get It [new song]
- Mamma Said
- It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over
- Let Love Rule
- American Woman [The Guess Who]
- Fly Away
- Are You Gonna Go My Way
After a short break, the David Bowie tape intro started, and U2 walked out onto the stage…

U2’s Setlist: 2+ hours
- Space Oddity [tape intro, David Bowie]
- Even Better Than The Real Thing
- I Will Follow
- Get On Your Boots
- Magnificent
- Mysterious Ways
- Elevation
- Until The End Of The World
- All I Want Is You
- Stay (Faraway, So Close!) [acoustic]
- Beautiful Day with NASA video* & Space Oddity snippet (*video below)
- Pride (In The Name Of Love)
- Miss Sarajevo
- Zooropa
- City Of Blinding Lights
- Vertigo
- I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight with Discothèque and other snippets
- Sunday Bloody Sunday
- Scarlet
- Walk On
- Encore 1: Aung San Suu Kyi Message [tape]
- One
- Where The Streets Have No Name
- Encore 2: Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
- With Or Without You
- Moment of Surrender
They rocked out, and from our vantage point it was like watching alien TV. Some of the best moments for me… The kick-off “Even Better Than the Real Thing” followed by the throwback “I Will Follow” (this show was going to be all over their catalog). The NASA Commander Mark Kelly video intro to “Beautiful Day” (from space – video below). The snippet of “Discotheque” was excellent (POP is a great, under-appreciated album). Bono swinging out on his lit-up microphone during “Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me.”
Oh, and Zoo-fucking-ropa. The expanding televisions caught me off guard… it was a circus of sights and sounds.

A massive spectacle from a massive band. A truly entertaining experience. U2 blows about any other live show out of the water as far as sheer force, light, power, and energy.

MRT’s Misty River benefit show (Eugene, OR)
Busy weekend… hitting the road for Seattle shortly for U2…
Last night was the McKenzie River Trust benefit show “The Living River” at The Shedd (Eugene, OR) with finger-picking wonder Doug Smith & folky group Misty River. It was a delight.
emobie photography was in the house snapping away some photos. I’ll post them here with her permission once they are processed (by Tuesday for sure).
In the meantime, check out the websites for MRT & the performers:

RECIPE: Taco Scones
I had been thinking of making this for a while. I had never seen “taco scones.” I quick search on google & food.com‘s recipes came up with nothing outside of something called a Navajo Scone, which looked like taco stuff on navajo bread. Mexican scones came up, but were usually chocolate/cinnamon or apple-somethings. Anyway, I’m considering this a fairly novel concept, but I don’t know why. They’re super easy, all of the ingredients are pretty basic, and it’s a classic combination of flavors. For a Memorial Day / birthday party, I made…
Taco Scones
Makes 8-12 large scones
Ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose unbleached flour
- 1 Tbl baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ Tbl black pepper
- 1 Tbl taco seasoning (plus add’l to top scones – I buy in the bulk section)
- 1 stick chilled unsalted butter (or Earth Balance, etc), cut into cubes
freeze butter for 15 minutes for “chilled” butter - 1 ½ cups grated medium/sharp cheddar cheese (or vegan substitute)
- 1 red bell pepper, diced small
- 2 jalapeno peppers, diced small
- 1 small can of sliced olives
- 1 lb soy crumbles, warmed & sautéed with taco seasoning
- ¾ to 1 cups buttermilk (or soy creamer / coconut milk / vegan buttermilk)
- ¼ to ½ cup cheddar cheese to top scones (or vegan substitute)
- 1 large egg for top glaze (optional)
- 2 tsp water for top glaze (optional)
- salsa, sour cream, guacamole (for dipping)
Preheat oven to 400°
Steps:
- Using a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment (or do by hand), combine flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper & taco seasoning in a large bowl on low speed.
- With mixer running, gradually add cubes of butter until the mixture is crumbly and studded with flour – butter bits about the size of small peas.
- Add 1 ½ cups grated cheese and mix just until blended.
- Add peppers, soy crumbles, olives and 3/4 cup buttermilk to flour and cheese mixture. Mix by hand just until all ingredients are incorporated. If dough is too dry to hold together, use remaining buttermilk, adding 1 tablespoon at a time, until dough is pliable and can be formed into a ball. Stir as lightly and as little as possible to ensure a lighter-textured scone.
- Remove dough from bowl and place it on a lightly floured flat surface. Pat dough into a ball. Using a well-floured rolling pin, flatten dough into a circle about 8 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick. Cut dough into 8 to 10 equal wedges, depending on size scone you prefer.
- Whisk egg and water in a small mixing bowl to combine. Brush each wedge with egg wash. Top with taco seasoning and the remaining ¼ to ½ cup cheddar cheese.
- Place scones on a lined baking sheet and bake for 18 to 22 minutes or until golden brown and no longer sticky in the middle. Serve warm with salsa, sour cream and/or guacamole for dipping.
This will definitely be a repeat recipe! Taco scones, “Mexiscones,” or whatever you want to call them – these savory scones are delicious.
This is a mainly music-based blog. If you stumbled in on a recipe search, check out my other recipes at THIS LINK.
Horton Hears a Rare B-Side from Radiohead
Horton Hears a Rare B-Side from Radiohead
Yeah, two Radiohead posts in a row. Happy Memorial Day, Steve…
Weezer “Paranoid Android”
I don’t know if this was for Towel Day (it was posted two days post-TD2011), but Weezer decided to take on a live recording of Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android.”
Good technical cover of one of Radiohead’s more technical songs, if you ask me. Sadly, they didn’t nail the “underwater guitar” sound present in Jonny’s axe on the original OK Computer version.
Eddie Vedder – Ukulele Songs (2011)
Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder is putting out his stripped down Ukulele Songs album next Tuesday (May 31st).
It’s a short album (less than 35 minutes), but has many of the things we love of the voice that is Eddie Vedder. Musically, I find it lacking. I’m used to the rock(!)… but I still think it’s a good record.
The album is streaming for free over on NPR. You can order it from the Amazons now.
Eddie’s upcoming summer tour with The Swell Season/The Frames frontman Glen Hansard (and not Thom Yorke) starts in mid-June:
June 15: Providence, R.I. (Providence Performing Arts Center)
June 16: Boston, Mass. (The Wang Theatre)
June 18: Hartford, Conn. (The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts)
June 21: New York, N.Y. (Beacon Theatre)
June 22: New York, N.Y. (Beacon Theatre)
June 25: Philadelphia, Pa. (Tower Theatre)
June 26: Detroit, Mich. (Fox Theatre)
June 28: Chicago, Ill. (The Chicago Theatre)
July 1: St. Louis, Mo. (Fox Theatre)
July 2: Minneapolis, Minn. (Orpheum Theatre )
July 5: San Diego, Calif. (Copley Symphony Hall)
July 6: Long Beach, Calif. (Terrace Theater)
July 8: Los Angeles (The Wiltern)
July 9: Santa Barbara, Calif. (Santa Barbara Bowl)
July 11: Oakland, Calif. (The Paramount Theatre)
July 14: Portland, Ore. (Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall)

Silverchair “indefinite hibernation”
No, Indefinite Hibernation is not the name of the new Silverchair record. It’s the new state of the band. A sad day…

May 25, 2011
We formed Silverchair nearly 20 years ago when we were just 12 years old. Today we stand by the same rules now as we did back then … if the band stops being fun and if it’s no longer fulfilling creatively, then we need to stop.
Therefore after much soul searching we wanted to let you know that we’re putting Silverchair into “indefinite hibernation” and we’ve decided to each do our own thing for the foreseeable future.
We assure you that this decision has not been taken lightly. In fact we’ve been struggling with it for quite a while now.
Back in 2009 we went into the studio to start work on a record. Initially things were going well and as a result we did some shows in 2010 to maintain creative momentum. However, over the months that followed in the studio it became clear to us that we were moving in different directions. Despite our best efforts over the last year or so, it’s become increasingly clear that the spark simply isn’t there between the three of us at the moment.
As a result we’ve decided to put the band into ‘a deep sleep’ while we all do other things that we find more inspiring right now. This means that Silverchair won’t be making music together or playing shows any time soon. It also means that the three of us won’t be working together unless and until it feels right again.
We understand some of you may be disappointed by this news but we really see it as a liberating and positive step for us at this point in our lives.
We also want to make it really clear that this decision has been made with the best possible intentions. We’ve always tried our hearts out to make the best music we could possibly make at the time – regardless of commercial consequences.
The three of us still truly care about each other. At the moment Ben’s busy in the studio recording his own music, Chris is working on various business, musical and charitable ventures while Daniel is creating a film soundtrack and working on other musical projects. We hope you’ll continue to take an interest in our individual work over the years ahead.
In closing we’d like to acknowledge all the people ‘behind the scenes’ who’ve helped us keep this train on the tracks since we first started playing in a garage. There are too many to name but they know who they are and we truly appreciate all their love and hard work.
Above all though we want to thank you for all your support in good times and bad. You’ve put up with our long breaks between albums, our constantly changing musical styles and lots more. The unbelievable loyalty we’ve been shown by you our audience, and our friends, has never gone unnoticed or unappreciated. That’s why we wanted to tell you first.
With Sincere Thanks For Your Understanding.
Sweet Dreams.
Daniel, Ben and Chris
Perhaps there will be more music from the guys in the future (the aforementioned new material in 2010). I know we’ll see more from Daniel Johns. Whether that’s limited to film work, The Dissociatives (with Paul Mac), Hathaway+Palmer (with Luke Steele), or something different – well, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Digital Noise Academy (update)
Ken Andrews posted a new blog with an update about Digital Noise Academy, his online collaboration with Charlotte Martin, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Sharky Laguana, Tommy Walter, Fernando Sanchez, and Jordon Zadorozny. His blog is annoyingly white text in a jpeg format… so, head on over to his blog site to read it (I ain’t about to type it up).

The Office in Georges Seurat’s “Sunday Afternoon”
I’ve seen Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” done as a topiary garden / art installation (in Columbus, OH)… well, now NBC has put the cast of The Office into the mix…
Oddly no Michael or Holly… but, cool nonetheless…
Cibo Matto – Reunion Tour 2011

Check out their cool split-screen, double-one-shot (one forward, one backward) video of “Sugar Water” directed by Michel Gondry…
I like the video better than the actual song. My favotire album of theirs is Stereo Type A (with some of my fave NYC jazz fiends like Dave Douglas, John Medeski & Billy Martin of MMW, Sean Lennon and Marc Ribot). No word on their band for this tour. I know most of those guys are busy, but… maybe Sean Lennon will join them? I dunno. Last time I saw Yuka Honda in concert, Sean Lennon popped up on stage for a song (with Nels Cline Singers at the Doug Fir earlier this year).
Stay tuned: http://www.yeahbasicallycibomatto.com/
