Opeth’s Heritage (goofy cover art)
Behold, the cheesy-as-hell-looking cover art for Opeth’s upcoming album Heritage (out 9/20/2011 on Roadrunner)…
I just checked, it’s not April 1st again. Does June 1st represent a similar joke day in Sweden? Seriously… their faces as fruit on the tree? Seriously, you guys. I think it’d actually be an OK album cover without the heads on the tree thing. With it, though, I classify this as a “death metal fail.”
And, I can’t make out which band member is in the lower right. Should he be fearful for his job?

Worst metal album cover of the decade. Poor Travis Smith, better work on that CV.
I personally think it’s awesome. Per (the keyboardist) actually parted ways with the band just after this record was recorded. Effing hilarious.
Also a throw back to some 70s prog covers.
Throwback, OK. I think it’d be Ok if not for the damn heads. I mean, seriously, it’d be pretty good. It’s a bit too cheesy. Oh well…
I think it’s meant to be cheesy.
I think Opeth don’t take themselves all too seriously though. I’m sure you’ve been to a show and heard Mikael joke between almost every song. I don’t think they want to be lumped in with the metal crowd. One way of separating yourself is to not take yourself too seriously, which is what metal music seems to be about anymore.
I read somewhere that there’ll be no death metal no grunts on this album, and Mikael said he’s through with death metal since late 90’s. He states they’re now doin’ a 70’s prog rock album, the album he wanted to release since his twenties… bizarre!
Hmmm… I guess we’ll see. :)
Well, the fact that it isn’t going to be a metal album maybe changes something? Its prog!
No, it doesn’t change that I think the heads on the tree look silly. Regardless of style, it looks silly. Though, being a 70s-throwback album, the heads make sense. There were a lot of silly looking album art back then, if you ask me. :)
