Tori Amos “Carry” video + pre-order + tour updates

18th Aug 11 (Thu) Leave a comment

The first track to get video treatment for Tori Amos’ upcoming Night of Hunters album is the final track, “Carry.”  Sonically, it’s a lush stringy ballad – quite fitting for Tori’s move to classical label Deutsche Grammophon.

I’m curious how the rest of the album is, but I guess I’ll have to wait until it hits on September 20th.  The CD, CD/DVD deluxe and vinyl versions are currently up for pre-order on the Amazons (digital/mp3 download version to follow).  Tori’s Fall tour dates are below as well.  I’m still bummed about no Oregon date, but hope there’s a 2nd leg added at some point…

Sigur Rós – INNI (live album/film)

17th Aug 11 (Wed) 1 comment

Last week, Sigur Rós put out an enigmatic trailer titled INNI without any details.  Speculation of a live film was an easy guess… “Inni” is the shorthand name for the second track (“Inní mér syngur vitleysingur” aka “within me a lunatic sings“) on their last full-length album, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust.  Today they released the initial details about the upcoming release…

Inni is comprised of a double live album and seventy-five minute film of Sigur Rós’ last show before their well-documented “indefinite hiatus” at the end of 2008.

Recorded and shot over two nights at London’s Alexandra Palace at the close of the world tour around their fifth full length album, með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, Inni sees the band at the peak of their powers, captured on film for the first time as a core four-piece since they were joined by string section amiina at the start of the century. Directed by Vincent Morisset (Arcade Fire’s Miroir Noir), the film is set to debut at this year’s Venice Film Festival on September 3rd, 2011.

SIGUR RÓS - INNI

THE FILM

Inni is Sigur Rós’ second live film following 2007’s hugely-celebrated tour documentary Heima. Whereas that film positioned the enigmatic group in the context of their Icelandic homeland, providing geographical, social and historical perspectives on their otherworldly music, Inni focuses purely on the band’s performance, and stands as a stark counterpoint to Heima’s kaleidoscopic richness. Where Heima was lush and colorfully expansive, Inni is spare and near-monochromatic in its tunnel vision. Filmed in a manner that invites both intimacy and claustrophobia, Inni cocoons the viewer in a one-on-one relationship with the band, eschewing the audience for closeness, depicting how it feels for both band and fan to experience Sigur Rós live.

The film’s elegance and atmosphere are enhanced by Morisset’s re-filming of the original digital footage on 16mm, which was then re-filmed again, sometimes through prisms and other found objects, allowing Inni to look and feel like something recovered from the past. Interspersed with this is archival footage drawn from the band’s previous decade, dating back as far as 1998. This juxtaposition gives viewers the full scope of Sigur Rós’ origins, evolution, originality and influence.

THE DOUBLE LIVE ALBUM

The live album Inni – a first for the band – is comprised of the full set from Alexandra Palace, played in order with just one omission, and clocks in at one-and-three-quarter hours. Recorded by Sigur Rós’ in-house studio engineer Birgir Jón Birgisson, Inni’s live audio recording is far and away the best way of replicating the full-force effect of standing in front of one of the world’s most extraordinary bands for an evening.

When taken in together, Inni’s film and live album give us an incredible account of one of the most celebrated and influential rock bands of recent years, showing where they’ve come from, where they’ve been, and like all things Sigur Rós, where it is they will be going next.  More details of how, when and where Inni will enter the world will be made available shortly on sigur-ros.co.uk.

Get your own Fol Chen song…

27th Jul 11 (Wed) 1 comment

Fol Chen makes some pretty fun, electronic indie rock (check the videos at the bottom).  They are also about to venture into the realm of making some impromptu music with a “Verbal Algorithm Composer-Free Song Generator.”

Walker Art Center – Open Field
Minneapolis, MN
Thursday, July 28th, 2-7pm

Samuel Bing and Sinosa Loa of the band Fol Chen (Asthmatic Kitty) will produce a customized, one-of-a-kind song for each person who participates in the Fol Chen Verbal Algorithm Composer-Free Song Generator. This is a one-day event only!

Come fill out a survey about your experience at the Walker, turn your survey in to Bing and Sinosa Loa, and receive a CD of your very own custom song minutes later. At the end of Summer Jubilee, they will release the songs as a digital download Open Field EP.

Samuel Bing is a songwriter and co-producer for Fol Chen, whose two albums of danceable, art-pop have garnered praise from the likes of The New York Times, NME and Pitchfork. They have remixed and/or been remixed by David Bowie, Liars, Baths, and legendary club producer Junior Vasquez. They also covered Prince for SPIN’s “Purplish Rain” compilation. Their song “In Ruins” was featured on Showtime’s Weeds and an episode of CSI: NY in which a victim is murdered over Chat Roulette.

REVIEW: Eddie Vedder & Glen Hansard @ the Schnitzer (Portland, OR – 7/14/11)

15th Jul 11 (Fri) 7 comments

MY PHOTOS NOW POSTED (see bottom)

Last night in Portland showed two stripped down musicians, parting ways from their “main gig” and creating some delightful energy despite the solo nature of it all.  First up was Glen Hansard of The Swell Season (see the Once movie) and The Frames (who essentially became the backing band for the Swell Season)…

(not from GH’s July 2011 Portland gig – this shot from Nov 2009)

Glen played a 45 or so minute set.  Among stories of getting drunk and staying out until 5am viewing women only wearing feathers, he played some tunes that featured his powerful voice.

Glen’s Setlist: 45 minutes

  • Pennies in the Fountain
  • Leave
  • Lucia
  • You Will Become
  • Love Don’t Keep Me Waiting (with “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” tag)
  • In These Arms
  • Astral Weeks [Van Morrison] (with “Death Metal” solo)
  • Song of Good Hope

After a short set change, Pearl Jam front-man Eddie Vedder came out.  He was dressed as expected… Seattle casual – complete with flannel.  Shocking, I know…

The stage was set up with a sparse bungalow living room feel.  Some chairs, a reel to reel, antique lamps, guitars and shelving strewn about.  While this was billed as the Ukulele Songs tour, Eddie started out on acoustic.  He played a wandering and energy filled set: some stripped down Pearl Jam tunes, some Into the Wild tunes, some ukulele numbers, some covers.  While his casual flannel may make him seem like stuck in the 90s slacker movement, Eddie is anything but a slacker.  He delivered 2 hours of music…

Eddie’s Set: 2 hours

  • Walking The Cow [Daniel Johnston]
  • Can’t Keep
  • Sleeping By Myself
  • Without You
  • Goodbye
  • Blue, Red And Grey [The Who]
  • I Am Mine
  • Thumbing My Way
  • Just Breathe
  • Far Behind
  • Long Nights (with Glen Hansard)
  • Setting Forth
  • Guaranteed
  • Rise (dedicated to Gerry Lopez)
  • Immortality
  • Unthought Known
  • The End
  • Arc
  • Encore 1: If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out [Cat Stevens]
  • You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away [The Beatles]
  • Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town
  • The Golden State (with Corin Tucker) [John Doe]
  • Tonight You Belong To Me (with Janet Weiss) [Billy Rose & Lee David]
  • Sleepless Nights (with Glen, off mic, a cappella, gorgeous) [Gram Parsons]
  • Society (with Glen) [Jerry Hannan]
  • Falling Slowly (with Glen on lead vocals) [The Swell Season]
  • Porch
  • Encore 2: Hard Sun (with Glen, Corin & Janet) [Gordon Peterson]
  • Dream A Little Dream [The Mamas & the Papas]

Eddie has such passion for what he does.  He doesn’t do things half-assed.  While I’d say he isn’t in my short list for “best singers,” he is on the short list for “most passionate singers.”  He’s a gritty and emotive rockstar, definitely – all while being down to earth.  I also find his voice to be distinct, despite the copycats of the 90s.

Eddie shared a funny story about a party with Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell trying to help Eddie create the perfect “evil ukulele” sound.  Too much wine brought on Chris hurling over the balcony… “the ukulele won.”

The session of duets Corin Tucker (from Sleater-Kinney/CT Band) and Janet Weiss (from Sleater-Kinney/Quasi/etc) was fantastic.  The absolute highlight for me was when Glen came back on for the encore and played three songs with Eddie… the first being a stunning off-mic, a cappella version of “Sleepless Nights” and the third being “Falling Slowly” (from Glen’s band The Swell Season).

This tour ends tonight in Seattle…

One question of note: why were the roadies dressed in white lab coats?

My Brightest Diamond ‘All Things Will Unwind’ (Oct 18, 2011)

12th Jul 11 (Tue) Leave a comment

So, if I could have a blog solely dedicated to the music of Shara Worden/My Brightest Diamond, I would.  I ‘found’ her via her opening slot for Sufjan Stevens’ Avalanche tour (Indianapolis 2006?).  Her voice amazed me, and she has quickly become one of my favorite vocalists.  She has operatic voice training, a clever wit, charming lyrics, and an indie-rock DIY mentality.

Her third studio album under the My Brightest Diamond moniker* has been announced… All Things Will Unwind will be released October 18, 2011.

For those unfamiliar, MBD creates some fantastic orchestral indie pop.  She’s offering a FREE download of a song from the forthcoming album…

Mike Patton’s voice in ‘Tintin’ movie (maybe?)

11th Jul 11 (Mon) Leave a comment

From movieweb

Director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson bring the beloved adventures of Hergé’s roving reporter Tintin to life in the motion-capture adventure The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, which features performances from Jamie Bell, Simon Pegg, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis, Cary Elwes, and Nick Frost. A new image from the movie has been released, which features Tintin (Jamie Bell) and his faithful terrier Snowy (Mike Patton) pouring over a piece of evidence. Check it out below.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn Photo
The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn comes to theaters December 23rd, 2011.

If this is true, I’ll put this in the “glad he’s getting voice over work to help pay for his non-mainstream musical output” category for me.  I quick peek at IMDB doesn’t list him or the character Snowy.  Per CacaVolante (a Mr Bungle-themed tumblr), Patton’s management has not confirmed it.  For now, let’s put it in the rumor mill…
