REVIEW: David Cross @ Newmark Theatre (Portland, OR – 9/25/09)

David Cross is on a little fall tour to promote his new book, I Drink For a Reason. You may know him from Mr Show with Bob & David, or as Tobias Fünke on Arrested Development (i.e.- the best television show of all-time), or his stand-up specials, or a glut of parts in television and movies.
(David Cross as Tobias Fünke was one of the best character pieces with laugh-out-loud antics in about every moment he was on screen).
I was just at the Newmark for another comedian, Patton Oswalt. Unlike the Patton show, though, this show wasn’t general admission. Yay! We got to our seats ( fairly close up). The show began not too long after.
The opener was Todd Glass. He only did about 15 minutes, but was pretty damn funny. He jumped around a lot in material, but I guess with only 15 minutes, you have to get as much in as possible.

David came out around 8:45pm and started off with a song about tearing Portland a new asshole that morphed into the jokes he was going to tell us, which wouldn’t involve any cosmonaut jokes… which, of course, ended with a cosmonaut joke.
David, of course, touched on religion, politics, and drugs. My favorite bits were scattered all about. His mom making yogurt… from yogurt was pretty funny. The bit on the horror porn was hilarious. He did make a good point – what’s the reason for horror porn? To scare the cum out of you?
One of the better parts of the night was when he called out a sign language guy for signing words that didn’t exist. The “deaf guy interloper” was part of the show, a friend of David’s; however at first, the audience didn’t know. When David said “Gallileo,” the guy signed the motions for looking through a looking glass. It looked so odd that David said it again about 3 times… then David started saying words like “ridonkulous” to see what the sign language would be. It all ended with David calling him out and telling him to leave (“deaf guy” showed up later as a “live blogger interloper” during the set).
The bit about Scientology and Mormonism was also pretty funny. We’ll see how that goes next week in Salt Lake City. :) Some of his other humor was a little bit over the line (re: hassidic jews, etc), but that’s what you get with David Cross. He ended with a joke on crazy things to buy (i.e.- SkyMall crap). The focus on the “time mug” was pretty hilarious.
After 90 quality minutes David left the stage… but then came back out shortly for a quick movie encore… he played 3 and a half minutes (all that was legally allowed) of his upcoming UK television series directed by Spike Jonze, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. It looks pretty damn brilliant. Anytime you have Spike Jonze involved, it’s got good potential. Arrested Development alum Will Arnett was also in it. We’ll likely not get it on this sided of the pond, until it hits DVD.

REVIEW: Patton Oswalt @ Newmark Theatre (Portland, OR – 9/13/09)

OK, so you may have heard of Patton Oswalt from Pixar’s Ratatouille. He was the leading… um… rat. You may also know him from the newly hitting the cinemas flick called Big Fan, and well… tons of other stuff. He just released a new CD/DVD of his Comedy Central special, My Weakness is Strong.
(available on the Amazons)
This was my second time in the Newmark Theatre. It suits a comedian as well as a 9-piece jazz band. The show started right on time (7:30pm), and it was general admission, and I showed up at about 7:29pm… but I lucked out with a decent spot in the 2nd balcony. The opener was really funny… a guy formerly from Portland, but who now lives in Seattle and writes trivia questions for an XBox game company or something. I didn’t catch his name… Andy something (any help to fellow comedy-goers?). Anyway, he was good, did 15 solid minutes and handed the mic directly to Patton…
Patton was really funny. He has some bits canned, but he seems to wing it more than other comedians that I’ve seen (i.e.- Seinfeld & Carlin don’t tend to stray from their “script”). Based on looking at the track titles from My Weakness is Strong, he did Sky Cake, The Oswalt Family Crest, Rats, Orgy, Treadmill, Obama…And Time Travel…And Coolness…And The Last Racist, and The Magician. He also did the KFC Famous Bowl bit with a newly added bit about an upcoming “Double Down” sandwich that sounded dreadful to eat. We got to witness a spontaneous song written for the Double Down when an audience member asked if there’d be a song…
♪♫ fuck you heart, fuck you liver, I’m gonna double down ♪♫
He ended the 90 minute set with the Christmas Song (Newsong) bit and a bit about Stella Dora breakfast treats.
Favorite bits from Patton… hmm… Sky Cake (YouTube below) is a great bit and right up my alley. Obama/Time Travel was great. The Magician who was pissed about $5 was great. KFC Famous Bowl / Double Down was classic, especially as we got to witness a new song formulated on-stage. And Patton’s random interaction with a kid in a band from Eugene called Busket for about 5 minutes was pretty hilarious, too. Good ol’ Motorized Vinyl Rhino!
Sky Cake is a Lie!

The Concert T-Shirt Etiquette Guide
My brother and I always had these rules as we went to shows… I’m glad we aren’t the only ones…
Reposted from Each Note Secure blog:

1. When wearing another bands t-shirt, try to keep the same genre or influence.
ex. a) David Bowie @ NIN
ex. b) Placebo @ Futureheads
2. The ironic concert t-shirt is the big exception. if you wear a Culture Club or Michael Bolton t-shirt to a Cure show you will get many compliments.
3. There is a sliding scale of the obscurity of the band vs. the genre.
for example: A Tapes ‘n Tapes shirt could be worn to any rock show.
4. When wearing a old concert t-shirt to a newer tour by the same band, it is prefered to wait at least eight years. too soon will show you to be lame, but to follow this guide will give you street cred as a long time fan.
~It should also be noted that a shirt purchased off EBay can break this rule, therefore a stain or hole of some sort is required. (YANP Matt)
5. It is also a violation to wear any shirt of any band members former band or side project to the current incarnation of that band members show.
6. It is a violation to wear the shirt you just bought at that same concert. Especially when it is over whatever you had on before.
7. You may not wear a new concert t-shirt for 2 weeks (especially the next day)
~The exception to this is when you saw a show out of town and wear the shirt at home the next day.
8. It is a violation to wear a concert t-shirt you purchased from the band at a second show on the same tour.
9. No Beatles, Bob Marley or Jimi Hendrix t-shirts, unless you actually went to one of their concerts.
10. It is a violation to wear a concert t-shirt that has been signed by any member of the band.
Get Cross…
David Cross was playing at the Newmark Theatre in Portland, OR, on a day that I already had local Eugene plans (Th, Sep 24 – Raquy and the Cavemen). Well, David’s show sold out so fast that they added a 2nd show the next night (Fri, Sep 25)… yay! Needless to say, I already blue my tickets this morning.

For your own 2nd Portland David Cross show tickets… GO HERE.

This is going to be two weeks in a row with four shows on consecutive nights… batch 1 (Sept 15-19): Porcupine Tree & That1Guy / Wynton Marsalis / Sunny Day Real Estate / Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (well, JFJO is a maybe as it’s the same day as PDX VegFest and we’re volunteering there early in the day), and then batch 2 (Sep 24-27): Raquy & the Cavemen / David Cross / Alice in Chains / Works Progress Administration (with Glen Phillips & Nickelcreek folks).
I wouldn’t have it any… other… way. I do have a feeling that my concert reviews will suffer a backlog. Anyway, I’ll take photos on shows I am able…
tons of news
Nine Stories!
In this episode: The new Masada Quintet with special guest Joe Lovano, the Jenny Owen Youngs‘ video that I somehow missed, Nellie McKay‘s Election musical, Fanfarlo for $1, the deaths of JazzTimes & Jeff Hanson, the resurrection of Futurama, a new Wussy video, and Asthmatic Kitty’s most excellent Library Catalog Music Series…
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The new Masada Quintet with special guest Joe Lovano just came out for June on Tzadik Records. It’s the original Masada Quartet (John Zorn on alto sax, Dave Douglas on trumpet, Greg Cohen on bass & Joey Baron on drums) plus pianist Uri Caine… plus special guest tenor sax Joe Lovano. Holy cow!!! It’s the first official studio release from the Masada Quartet since 1999’s י [Yod] (or 2005 if you count the unreleased/rarities compilation Sanhedrin). This album is bound to be at the top of my “best of” list for 2009.
This video from Jenny Owen Youngs came out in September 2007. How did I miss it? It’s a brilliant singer-songwriter cover of rapper Nelly‘s “Hot in Herre” (so take off all your clothes). I bought the iTunes single… great stuff:
Nellie McKay is writing a musical based on the book/movie Election. Read more about it over on Brooklyn Vegan blog.
Fanfarlo just put on their debut album, Reservoir, for $1. Fanfarlo is a London-based band founded by Swedish musician Simon Balthazar. Nice textured indie pop… think Sigur Rós meets Sufjan Stevens. The album, in full, is available for only $1.00 until July 4th, 2009 at http://www.fanfarlo.com/.
The economy took another print-media victim. This time it’s the death (or “temporary suspension”) of JazzTimes magazine. The 38 year old magazine couldn’t maintain readership in the new era of online content. It’s a sad day, as it was a great magazine. I hope it’s able to come back later in some form or another under new ownership, as mentioned in the Howard Mandel article.
Whispy singer-songwriter Jeff Hanson died last Saturday (6/5) after an accidental fall on his cement-floored apartment in St. Paul, MN. Jeff was known for his feminine vocal style and songwriting/sound similar to late indie rocker Elliott Smith (who also died young). He had three great albums out on Kill Rock Stars. I hate to sound selfish, but I’m bummed I missed him when he recently came through Portland. We lost another one, far too young…
In “Oh Sweet, Futurama’s On” News, the resurrection of Futurama is eminent. Much like Family Guy, the popularity soared even after being originally canceled. Futurama had some straight-to-DVD movies recently, and it will return with new 26 episodes on Comedy Central in the winter 2010.
A favorite band of mine from Cincinnati, Wussy, has a new “acoustic from an RV” video of “Maglite.” They recently put out their 3rd full length album, and it lives up to the quality and momentum in their prior two albums (plus 1 EP). Check out the video and then check out the album at Shake It Records:
Asthmatic Kitty’s most excellent Library Catalog Music Series just came out. The naming of the series sounds… boring. However, it’s really great instrumental music. There are three issues thus far: 900X: Music for Lubbock 1980, Law of the Least Effort: Music for Measurements, and Casey Foubert/James McAlister: Music for Drums. My favorite is the 900X one. Really, really good electronic, post-rockiness. If you liked a more “sane” version of Sufjan Steven’s Enjoy Your Rabbit, I bet you’d like the LCMS. Check it out at Asthmatic Kitty Records.
REVIEW: Jerry Seinfeld @ Hult Center (Eugene, OR – 5/21/09)
Mini-review…
It’s been a while since seeing Jerry Seinfeld live. I was always a big fan of that television show that he was on… you know… um, what was it called? Oh, yeah… Benson. I hear he kinda “faded away” after that early-80s stint on Benson . ;)
The opener was Larry Miller. He was the doorman on Seinfeld, plus he’s been in other television shows and movies (like Best in Show). Funny stuff, but he only did about 20-25 minutes of material. It was odd, because not even a minute later… on comes Jerry… at 7:28pm*…
Well, third time seeing him… Jerry did a lot of familiar jokes, and it was great. Horse racing, cellphones, “going out,” old people in Florida, being a parent… He did an hour’s worth of material, and then came back on for about 10 minutes of Q&A. Complete with a classic “Hello, Newman.” :)
*- I only made note of the time as it shocked me that it was starting soooo early.

Secret Band Project
Well… this originated as a chain mail thingy on the Facebooks. Mine actually turned out really well (if you ask me)…
My Secret Band Project

The Rules:
1 – Go to “wikipedia.” Hit “random”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.
2 – Go to “Random quotations”
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.
3 – Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
4 – Use photoshop or similar to put it all together.

fright of the conchords
There’s no reason to be afraid of New Zealand’s 4th most popular comedy folk duo. They’re mostly harmless, and they’re back for both a 2nd season on HBO (or eventually on DVD for those non-HBO subscribers like me) and a second album as well.
The Flight of the Conchords… looking… longingly and forlorn…?
As reported in SPIN, the kiwis are releasing their 2nd CD this coming April on Sub Pop Records (April 14th to be exact). Australian singer (and Zero 7 collaborator) Sia guests on a track. Also, if you pre-order the album from Sub Pop, you get the singles right after they air on the TV show (as well as some songs not on the TV show).

never before… hopefully never again…
File this under “personal” post…
So, never before have I left my car away from home at an airport to fly home. I’m stuck in Seattle, manager training is wrapping up… and I-5 is closed for 20-miles in between Seattle and Portland (near Chehalis) due to excess flooding. I-5 is closed per the Washington DOT “until further notice.” My only other routes are also closed due to snowy passes, mudslides, road damage, and more flooding. It’s a total cluster up here.
(not I-5, but it’s how I feel)
“I’m marooned…” – Casey Affleck’s character in the best worst movie ever… Gerry
So, I’m driving to Seatac airport, leaving my car there and flying home to Eugene. And then I’ll fly back to Seatac when I-5 clears up and I am able to drive back home. At least it’s work related… whew… too bad it wasn’t another type of accident that I could help clean up…

Astral Inter Planet Space Captain Christmas Infinity Voyage
OK, so before the main thrust of this post, here’s a short word from Jack Black…
With that being said, I think “piracy” might only relate to something that’s supposed to be sold and someone steals it? I dunno… regardless… since 2001, indie quirky folkster Sufjan Stevens has made “Songs for Christmas” EPs and distributed them to friends and family. In the fall of 2006, his record label Asthmatic Kitty released the first five volumes in a kick ass EP boxset (for a really great price – – 5 EPs for $14.99):
Since then, he’s done three more volumes… for friends and family. Well, Volumes 6 & 7 haven’t made their way onto the internets, yet*… but Songs for Christmas, Volume VIII: Astral Inter Planet Space Captain Christmas Infinity Voyage has been made available by one of Sufjan’s friends and/or family. So… I guess we’re all included in his friend’s list this year. Click the picture/tracklist below to go to another blogger’s post who has download links at the ready:
*– By “yet,” I mean… if you find Vol 6 or 7, tell me, yo! :)
And, kids… just like when Volumes 1-3 got leaked in early 2006… when the official product comes out, you gotta support the artists (with your wallet, not your mouse button)! I know I’ll buy it if it comes out… but until then, enjoy it as a Christmas present from Sufjan’s friend and/or family who likes to re-gift.
Happy Festivus tomorrow!
