Mike Patton – The Solitude of Prime Numbers [Nov 2011]

13th Sep 11 (Tue) Leave a comment

Update 10/17: the CD is now available to order.

FAITH NO MORE singer Mike Patton, moved by the Paolo Giordano novel The Solitude Of Prime Numbers and having contributed music to the movie of the same name, has created a 16-track release that boasts some of the most contemplative and stirring music of his multi-faceted career with Patton describing the release as a personal “sonic departure.” The album, titled “Music From The Film And Inspired By The Book The Solitude Of Prime Numbers (La Solitudine Dei Numeri Primi)”, has been set for a November 1 release via Ipecac Recordings.

Where Patton’s projects (FANTÔMAS, MONDO CANE, TOMAHAWK) often thrive on abrupt transitions and multi-layered instrumentation, “The Solitude Of Prime Numbers” collection boasts a cinematic feel that allows instruments an individual voice, emphasizes isolated notes and subtly transitions from piece to piece, acutely capturing the introspective and reflective feel of the novel. The album’s intricate packaging further conveys this dramatic and minimalistic approach, with a multi-panel digipak featuring a leaf cut out, embossed with a locking mechanism.

“The Solitude Of Prime Numbers” was released in 2008 and quickly became a national sensation in Italy where it sold over one million copies before it was translated into thirty languages worldwide. The novel tells the story of two individuals, Mattia and Alice, whose lives parallel each other in uncanny ways, like twin primes: both lonely but close to each other, separated by an even number. In 2010, a movie based upon the book, starring Isabella Rossellini and directed by Saverio Costanzo (“Private”, “In Memory Of Myself”) was released.

“Music From The Film And Inspired By The Book The Solitude Of Prime Numbers (La Solitudine Dei Numeri Primi)” features a unique arrangement with each track sequentially numbered with the first 16 prime numbers:

Tracklist

ten after nine eleven :: imagine no religion

11th Sep 11 (Sun) 2 comments

Sorry if I offend.  Sorry if I lose readers.  Just some thoughts.

Ten years after 9/11/2001, I think it can best be summed up with John Lennon’s words as such…

While I think our world would be in a better place if there were no religion, religion is not evil.  With that being said, demanding one religion have preference over another or taking violent action against others due to something your ‘god’ told you is a corrupt worldview.  Tolerance of a person’s right to believe or not believe in religion or god is what we should strive for as a people.  Tolerance of acts of aggression in the name of a god or religion should not be considered acceptable behavior.  Retaliating against innocent people based on their religion, skin color, customs or culture is evil.

We will likely never find peace.

But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to look for it.

Puscifer “Man Overboard” [video]

The first single from Puscifer’s second album Conditions of My Parole now has a video.  Get your Maynard James Keenan fix with the”Man Overboard” is directed by Meats Meier

I dig the song more than the video… while I dig Meats’ style, all the Puscifer videos are a bit “samey.”  I’d hope for something more unique rather than doing the same thing over and over again.  Great song from Maynard & Co and great talent in Meats, though… in spades, for sure.

The CD is up for pre-order here, and the vinyl is available for pre-order (and comes out October 18th).  The digital download single is available now.  A US Tour is expected for November 2011.

5th Sep 11 (Mon) Leave a comment

One a month, from March to December 2011…

Derek Webb’s Democracy Vol 2… This month, it is “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel (posted on 9/5). Good job by Derek, but I’m definitely disappointed in the populace who voted.  I mean, how boring are you guys?  Doubling down on U2, various hymns, and Simon & Garfunkel?  Where is your adventurous spirit, Democracy Volume 2 voters?  I love Derek.  I fear his fans are generally boring, though.

For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 2 is a continuation of the covers project Derek started last year. The fans get to nominate songs and then vote once the nominations are tallied. Here’s what he’s done in 2010 and 2011 to date (you can still go back and buy this volume):

  • January 2010: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
  • February: Coldplay – Fix You
  • March: Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’
  • April: Gnarls Barkley – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul
  • May: Sufjan Stevens – Chicago *a personal fave*
  • June: U2 – Where the Streets Have No Name
  • July: Huey Lewis & the News – Power of Love
  • August: The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby *a personal fave*
  • September: Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence
  • October: Radiohead – Karma Police *a personal fave*
  • November: Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah
  • December: Robert Robinson (traditional hymn) – Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
  • January 2011: off
  • February: off
  • March: Cee-Lo Green – F**k You *a personal fave*
  • April: Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer
  • May: The Beach Boys – God Only Knows
  • June: U2 – One
  • July: Dallán Forgaill (traditional hymn) – Be Thou My Vision
  • August: Simon & Garfunkel – Bridge Over Troubled Water

Democracy Vol. 2 is a series of subscription based albums of cover songs that Derek will be recording annually, starting January 2010. Those who participate will not only receive the exclusive album, but will democratically decide what songs Derek will record.

Ever wished you could hear Derek cover your favorite Beatles song? Or Backstreet Boys song? Or even re-record your favorite old Caedmon’s Call song? Here’s your chance. Songs will be nominated and voted down to 10. Derek will record them (demo quality) and deliver them digitally (320kbps MP3s), one song per month for 10 months (March to December). Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb!

New Ben Folds Five song “Tell Me What I Did”

30th Aug 11 (Tue) 2 comments

Another new streaming song from Ben Folds Five from the upcoming The Best Imitation of Myself retrospective… “Tell Me What I Did” is now streaming over on Stereogum.  Check the blog below for the first new BFF song, “House.”  One more new BFF song is out there, “Stumblin’ Home Winter Blues” will likely show up soon on some other music blog (Pitchfork? Spin?)…

New Ben Folds Five song "House" Ben Folds Five will go down in history as one of the bands that actually looked like they were having fun on stage.  When they broke-up in the Fall of 2000, a bit of happiness died.  Ben went on to do a lot of solo work (some Five-ish, some not), bassist Robert has stayed active in the NC music scene, and drummer Darren has put out a few gorgeous records with his band Hotel Lights (where he sings and plays guitar).  In fact, I just found out that … Read More

War Parakeet

28th Aug 11 (Sun) Leave a comment

Things have been slow on the music front for me… not as many concert reviews.  I saw The Termals (and others) last night at the Eugene Celebration.  No review forthcoming, but The Thermals were super rad.  I definitely need to get more into them, and I’d definitely recommend seeing them if they come through your town.

Despite my lack of reviews the past month, don’t worry, I’ll be digging back in soon with Music Fest NW in early September and then kick more into gear in the fall when the bands make their inevitable “back to school” tours.

Now for something completely different…

Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Maple Bacon Porter

25th Aug 11 (Thu) 2 comments

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Voodoo Doughnuts is famous for their crazy and amazing doughnuts… they now have two locations in Portland and one in Eugene (represent!).  They also recently came up with a special Eugene Slug Queen doughnut for the annual crowning of the new Slug Queen (this year is Holly GoSlugly)…

Well, just across the craft beer wire, Newport, OR-based Rogue Ales they got label approval for their new Voodoo Doughnut Maple Bacon Porter in tribute to Voodoo’s maple bacon bars.  It’ll be out in 750mL bottles and is made with maple syrup, apple-smoked bacon and vanilla beans…

Personally, I’d have gone for a “jelly & pretzel voodoo doll beer” over this one, but you know, they don’t really poll the vegetarians before proceeding. LOL!  Anyway, an interesting concept… I’ll check with my meat-eating friends when it comes out.

New Ben Folds Five song “House”

23rd Aug 11 (Tue) 2 comments

Ben Folds Five will go down in history as one of the bands that actually looked like they were having fun on stage. In fact, I just found out that Hotel Lights put out a new one last week (Girl Graffiti).

Well, with Mr Folds’ upcoming retrospective 3-CD boxset, The Best Imitation of Myself (due out October 11, 2011), Ben Folds Five got back in the studio and recorded a new tune entitled “House.”  Two other new BFF songs are on the collection: “Tell Me What I Did” and “Stumblin’ Home Winter Blues.” No word on if any more new BFF, but anything coming out of an 11-year gap is good news to me.

You can stream the new song at NBC’s The Sing-Off page.  You can pre-order the retrospective at the Amazons.  No word on a digital / mp3 download version of the retrospective yet, but I’m sure it’ll be out there on iTunes and Amazon soon enough.

Tori Amos “Carry” video + pre-order + tour updates

18th Aug 11 (Thu) Leave a comment

The first track to get video treatment for Tori Amos’ upcoming Night of Hunters album is the final track, “Carry.”  Sonically, it’s a lush stringy ballad – quite fitting for Tori’s move to classical label Deutsche Grammophon.
