Celldweller *Soundtrack to the Voice in My Head Vol 2* Chapter 1
Celldweller‘s Soundtrack to the Voice in My Head – Volume 2: Chapter 1 went live yesterday. The first chapter (of an undisclosed total) features the songs “The Wings of Icarus,” “Pulsar,” “The Sentinel,” and the 20-minute “Adrift on Celestial Seas.”
Soundtracks Vol 2, Chapter 1 is available for download in several bundles (including a deluxe edition for $5.99) from Celldweller’s FiXT store. The deluxe edition features skads of Beta Cession snippets… After all chapters are released, I expect there will be a full-length album (and hopefully CD) issue.
Noctaluca’s final show
So, this came as a MySpace bulletin from Cincinnati rock outfit Noctaluca‘s profile last weekend, but hasn’t surfaced anywhere else… it’s sad news, and I hope it’s not true (but assume it is)…
Allow me to apologize for the last minute notice of Noctaluca’s last show, taking place TONIGHT at Play By Play Cafe in Cincinnati. I am personally not happy about this decision and I am VERY grateful for all of your love and support over the past 8 years. Rest assured, from the ashes of Noctaluca, a new project or projects shall emerge. The bar of songsmithery and sound quality has been raised by this band, and we will all take that with us wherever we go. There are unreleased tracks from the album we were working on floating around, so stay tuned for possible uploads, as well as new recordings by Jason, Aaron, Brandon, and Donovan. We could not have lasted this long without all of the encouraging words and love you all have given us. I personally thank you from the bottom of my heart. So, once again, I apologize for the last minute update, and try your damndest to make it to Play By Play Cafe tonight.
http://www.noctaluca.com doesn’t have any info yet… but again, it seems legit. I hope Jason Ludwig and the rest of the guys do something creative together in the future. For the photoset from their last show, check out Pat Strang’s flickr set.

Carissa’s Wierd – “Die”
News from SeattleShowGal’s blog…

When the story broke May 3, 2010 that Carissa’s Wierd were going to be doing a reunion show on July 9th and releasing a retrospective with Hardly Art, the blogosphere was a flutter. The original Carissa’s Weird crew that split and went on to be solo act Sara Cahoone and others formed Band of Horses were coming back and in righteous form! Today, Hardly art is being kind enough to share the track “Die” off the up and coming retrospective They’ll Only Miss You When You Leave: Songs 1996-2003, scheduled to be released on July 13, 2010. The strings swoon as the keys dance and vocals charm. Get it! Listen to it. Download it. Be excited for the upcoming show and release.
Carissa’s Wierd – “Die” (hosted by Seattle Show Gal)
It’s available for pre-order now at http://hardlyart.com/carissaswierd.html and the first 50 pre-orders get a special limited edition 7″ vinyl.

Derek Webb – Democracy Vol 1 #5
One a month in 2010…
Derek Webb‘s Democracy Vol 1 is rolling along… This month, it’s “Chicago” by Sufjan Stevens. Not as lush as the original instrumentation, but fantastic nonetheless. Thanks, Derek!!
For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 1 was part of the Stockholm Syndrome pre-order package, but you can still join in over at the DW store. My plea for Derek to cover Tori Amos’ “Crucify” is likely not gonna happen. Oh well… I like the first five months’ output regardless.
- January: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
- February: Coldplay – Fix You
- March: Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’
- April: Gnarls Barkley – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul
- May: Sufjan Stevens – Chicago
If you missed the Derek & Jennifer Knapp tour, check out my review and photos from the Portland Oregon show at the Aladdin Theater on April 27th.
~Dan – np: Isis – Wavering Radiant

Democracy Vol. 1 is the first in a series of subscription based albums of cover songs that Derek will be recording annually, starting January 2010. Those who participate will not only receive the exclusive album, but will democratically decide what songs Derek will record.
Ever wished you could hear Derek cover your favorite Beatles song? Or Backstreet Boys song? Or even re-record your favorite old Caedmon’s Call song? Here’s your chance. Songs will be nominated and voted down to 12. Derek will record them (demo quality) and deliver them digitally (320kbps MP3s), one song per month for 12 months. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb!

more Nellie McKay details
More details coming in on Nellie McKay‘s forthcoming follow-up to Normal As Blueberry Pie from Lehigh Valley Music…
Some of the key points… It is expected to be all original songs due out in September 2010. It’s being “overseen” by Talking Heads founder and world-beat practitioner David Byrne, and per Nellie it is a made up of a bunch of “wide-ranging” songs.

Dave Douglas & Keystone’s Spark of Being
The latest music from Dave Douglas & Keystone is a three-part release.

Part 1: SOUNDTRACK (out June 22nd)
Part 2: EXPAND (out August 24th)
Part 3: BURST (out September 21st)
All three releases were inspired by Douglas’ recent collaboration with experimental filmmaker Bill Morrison on the new multi-media project Spark of Being, and were written by Douglas for his electric sextet Keystone. The first release, to the aforementioned film, will be available exclusively through Greenleaf Music on June 22. Two additional releases, Expand and Burst, will follow later this year and feature Douglas and Keystone exploring and interpreting the themes of the film.
Spark of Being, which premiered on April 24 at Stanford University’s Lively Arts, combines a re-interpretation of the Frankenstein story featuring new, archival and distressed footage on film by experimental filmmaker Bill Morrison with an original score by Douglas. Spark of Being was commissioned by Stanford Lively Arts as the centerpiece of a campus-wide “Art + Invention” project throughout the 2009–10 season, and was also the culmination of a multi-stage residency at Stanford by Douglas and Morrison.
Expand is a fully realized new jazz album by Douglas and Keystone. It will be released by Greenleaf Music and distributed through traditional music channels on August 24. Greenleaf will follow with the release of Burst on September 21, which, like Expand, further develops the musical ideas of Spark of Being, without the parameters of a soundtrack composition. All three albums will also be available in a full box set on September 21.
“Spark of Being began its life as a meditation on humanity and technology,” said Douglas. “Through the lens of contemporary music and film, Bill Morrison and I were both interested in a collaboration that showed the various uses for invention, from the quirky to the profound, from the benign to the murderous.”
Greenleaf Music rolled this out as part of their newly expanded subscription series. The new subscription service offers expansions to their levels… newly included are subscriber-only podcasts, full streaming of the ENTIRE Greenleaf catalog, complimentary tickets to a Greenleaf artist’s show, meet & greet opportunities, et cetera. My subscription was expiring anyway; so it was a great time to re-up. :)
Antibalas & Fishtank
Two unrelated world music tidbits…

Afrobeat group Antibalas is finally hitting the road again… specifically the West Coast (they’ve been involved in getting the Fela! musical going on Broadway the past year or so). They’re thankfully swinging through my neck of the woods; so look for a review in mid-July:
Monday, 17 May 2010 – Webster Hall, New York, NY
Thursday, 15 July 2010 – The Echoplex, Los Angeles, CA

Tuesday, 20 July 2010 – Neumos, Seattle, WA
Thursday, 22 July 2010 – Castle Clinton, New York, NY
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Second up… gypsy/folk quartet Fishtank Ensemble has their new CD out, Woman in Sin. They played songs from it when I saw them at a Eugene house show in early March. Great tunes!! They’re on a mini-California CD release tour right now…

O.S.I. #4
As reported on Blabbermouth, “OSI (aka OFFICE OF STRATEGIC INFLUENCE), the hard rock duo formed by Jim Matheos (FATES WARNING) and Kevin Moore (CHROMA KEY, DREAM THEATER), has inked a deal with Metal Blade Records. The band is currently working on its fourth album for a late 2010 release.”
It’s been a bit since their last record, Blood (early 2009?). It came out and then nothing afterward (no tour, no additional buzz). It seems they like to do this long period of inactivity and then, “blam!” some excellent news with a CD shortly following.
I. Am. Stoked.
Jude – The Way That You Want Me
Jude Christodal has been on a hiatus as of late… his last album and mini-tour were in 2008. Well, under the cloak of night, the good ole CDBaby listings for him have become active again:
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/Jude5
The new song “The Way That You Want Me,” which was featured on the TV show HOUSE (FOX), is the first single from an upcoming acoustic album. The song is available as a download only as of this time. $0.99 on CDBaby, and I imagine it will be on iTunes shortly as well.
Dave Douglas & Keystone – Spark of Being
From the Greenleaf Music blog…
Dave Douglas: “Keystone and I have finished our new recording and it will be released very soon. Here is the cover of the first album in the trilogy of CDs and we’re all really excited about the collaboration with filmmaker Bill Morrison on Spark of Being. ‘Soundtrack’ is the first release of three — it’s the music from the actual film. We’ve documented much more than that, with two CDs of Keystone recordings from the sessions in Stanford.
We’ll be making a big push for this first release as well as for the three CD set and new subscription podcasts and conversations.
I think you’ll enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.”
Sweeeet… more news will be posted when I hear the word…
Dave Douglas – Masada seminar at the Stone
If you’re in New York City next week and love jazz, you have to go to this…
John Zorn, Ner Tamid, from the Masada songbook.
Monday, May 10, 7PM – 10PM:
Stone Seminar 19 – Dave Douglas on the Music of Masada
At The Stone in NYC
When John asked me to present a seminar, I thought: why not take a handful of Masada tunes, old and new, and play them with people? We’ll have the charts in Zorn’s incredibly-expressive handwriting… Bring your instrument as the goal will be to play as many tunes as we can get through. I learned a lot playing these tunes, and I think people may enjoy coming to get a closer look at how the tunes look and how performances of them work. Word is the composer may even come by and answer some of the many remaining questions I have for him.
Playing this music has always been fun, challenging, and thought-provoking for me. I can’t say that I have any answers, but Monday we will open up the book and see where the charts take us. Each of these tunes points in a unique and inspiring direction.
More info and specifics at The Stone website.
I’m really, really, really jealous…
Jelly Jam 3 (finally)

Per Ty Tabor on Facebook… “will begin working on the third Jelly Jam album later this month. I’m psyched to be recording with John Myung and Rod Morgenstein again. Jelly Jam 3 will be! It’s taken a few years, but we finally worked out our schedules. I can’t wait to find out what “
The other related collaborations (JJ1 & 2, Platypus, Jughead) are all tops, if you ask me. I can’t wait for JJ3…
Oregon Bach Fest preview with Trio Voronezh
The good music is matched by the good deals at the University of Oregon when the Oregon Bach Festival and the Duck Store present a season preview party Thursday, May 13 from 5:30 to 7 pm. On tap are ticket discounts, book discounts, beer, wine, and other refreshments, and a live performance by Trio Voronezh.
Conservatory trained in their native Russia, the members of Trio Voronezh played for money on the streets of Europe until discovered by a friend of the Oregon Bach Festival. Playing classical favorites on Russian folk instruments with showmanship and virtuosity, they made their American debut at the festival in 1996. After several return tours they became U.S. citizens, with Eugene as their home base for recording and touring.
During the OBF preview event participants can get vouchers for ticket discounts of up to 20% for selected concerts, and get discounts for 20% off general books in the Duckstore, an OBF sponsor. OBF staff members will be present to answer questions and assist with ticket orders online at the event.
The party takes place in the “Literary Duck” on the second floor of the Duck Store building at 13th and Kincaid in Eugene. Free refreshments include beer from Eugene City Brewery, wine, soft drinks and snacks.
The UO’s Oregon Bach Festival takes place June 25 through July 11 in Eugene, Bend and Portland. Tickets for the Festival go on sale over the counter at Eugene’s Hult Center ticket office on May 11. For complete schedule and ticket information call (541) 682-5000 or click http://oregonbachfestival.com.
