Mike Patton as a Decepticon

Thanks to Stubbadub for rescooping the MovieWeb scoop, because otherwise I wouldn’t have heard about it…

Apparently Mike Patton is confirmed as being the voice of a Decepticon in the upcoming sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.  He will be one of the seven pieces that form Devastator, likely Mixmaster.  For more info, check out the MovieWeb post.

Meh, I don’t know much about Transformers mythology, but I guess I’ll at least Redbox the movie when it comes out simply due to Mike Patton’s involvement.  He’s been getting a lot of movie-related gigs lately… Firecracker, Will Smith’s I Am Legend, A Perfect Place score, and the Crank 2 soundtrack (out soon).  This year also “promises” another Fantômas record, the debut of Mondo Cane (Mike’s 50s Italian-pop band), at least one more John Zorn/Moonchild Trio collaboration, and maybe even Crudo (the Dan the Automator collaboration).

It may be a banner Patton year, if everything gets legs underneath…

Faith No More to Rehearse Today…

Well, the revelation from the late 2008 query is out… Faith No More are getting back together for at least some European tour dates.  No U.S. dates or album plans, but I’m holding out hope.  Per a twitter from bassist Billy Gould, the band will rehearse today (3/4/09) for the first time in over 10 years…

The line-up will be their touring lineup from 1997: vocalist Mike Patton, keyboardist Roddy Bottum, bassist Billy Gould, drummer Mike Bordin, and guitarist Jon Hudson. I’ll post dates when/if they come in.

Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have set out to create one of 2009’s greatest films with their upcoming Crank 2: High Voltage. Not only did they hire Corey Haim for one of the most important supporting roles in the highly anticipated Jason Statham sequel, they have also nabbed legendary musician Mike Patton to score the entire soundtrack.  Earlier today while conducting an exclusive interview with Danny DeVito, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star let it slip that his friend was currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on the music for the film.

DeVito didn’t quite know how to describe the score, but did hint that there may be a song track that contains actual lyrics and singing by Patton. The former front man for both Mr. Bungle and Faith No More, who in recent years has put out an unstoppable flow of amazing music in nearly every genre, most recently headed down the road to scoring films with his work on the short A Perfect Place, and he recently contributed lyrics and vocals to the Marc Streitenfeld score for Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies. Crank 2: High Voltage will be the musician’s first foray into scoring an entire feature length film.

Patton has a busy year coming up. Not only will he be releasing the Crank 2: High Voltage score, he will also be releasing Mondo Cane, a record of Italian pop songs from the 50s and 60s and the first Crudo album, which sees him reteaming up with his Lovage sidekick Dan the Automator for some crazy hip-hop pop music.

Mike Patton’s A Perfect Place score for the short film of the same name is among my faves of 2008.  So… yeah… a feature length score by Patton would be coo-el.

Yes, my man-crush on all things Patton usually runs at high levels.

Faith No More reforming?

Update (2/24/09): Per Pitchfork and Tripwire, the band is set to reunite for some European dates in 2009.  The line-up will be their touring lineup from 1997: vocalist Mike Patton, keyboardist Roddy Bottum, bassist Billy Gould, drummer Mike Bordin, and guitarist Jon Hudson.  I’ll post dates when/if they come in.

OK, so I think I need to get my hands on a Kerrang magazine… their website has a blurb about a Faith No More reformation.  Mike Patton (their singer in the good era of FNM) talked about the possiblility of a future reunion in Jan 2008.  In other press since then, he didn’t rule it out, but he said it was unlikely.

OK, so anyone have this most recent Kerrang (with Metallica on the cover)?  Does it offer up anything more than speculation?  Or is the “reformation” something with Dio as the singer? :rolleyes:

11/29/08 Update (from Blabbermouth): According to U.K.’s Kerrang! magazine, industry insiders suggest that hugely infuential ’90s alt-metal band FAITH NO MORE is planning to return next year. Kerrang! understands that a number of U.K. venues have been placed on hold for shows from the band next spring, while U.K. festival appearances are rumored to follow in the summer. John Zorn’s Moonchild Trio (Mike Patton/Trevor Dunn/Joey Baron) is due out with a fourth recorded installment (The Crucible) later in 2008/early 2009.  Their second installment, 2006’s Astronome, is getting a revised treatment for the stage.  From the Downtown Music Gallery‘s newsletter this week:

Fantômas & Mondo Cane 2009

As reported by stubbadub/Rockarolla, 2009 may shape up to be a Mike Patton banner year

Mike Patton’s avant-garde, noise-metal quartet FANTÔMAS is set to record their fifth album.  Fantômas is Mike Patton on voice and electronics, Trevor Dunn (from Mr Bungle, Trio Convulsant, etc) on bass, Buzz Osbourne (from the Melvins) on guitars, and Dave Lombardo (from Slayer) on drums.  In live settings, I’ve even heard that Mike’s enlisted Terry Bozzio (from Frank Zappa’s band, etc) on drums when Dave Lombardo isn’t available.

Their albums have all had themes so far: the self-titled debut (aka Amenaza al Mundo) was based on a 30 page/picture graphic novel; their second, “most-accessible” album (The Director’s Cut) was reinterpretations of horror/ suspense/ gangster movie music; their third album (Delìrivm Còrdia) was a 74-minute, one-track meandering about anesthetic-free surgery (yes, you read that correctly); and their fourth album (Suspended Animation) was 30 tracks dedicated to the month of April 2005.


The rumors are that the 5th record will be an “all electronic” record.  I’m hoping that Mike will still utilize Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo despite this slant on the music.  I’ve also heard rumors (years ago) that Mike also wanted to do an all-acoustic Fantômas record – – which, IMO, would pwn.  Anyway, the Fantômas record is expected by June 2009.  We shall see…

Well, first.. I didn’t end up at the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (JFJO) show last night.  Boo.  Stupid Eugene Celebration blocking off within 60 yards of the art gallery where they were playing and wanting me to buy a wristband to see a show I’d have to pay for that’s not on a stage at Eugene Celebration.  I think me skipping it was on principle, not on lack for wanting to see JFJO.  Rassen frassen… but I hope to catch the free Richard Crandell show today at Cozmic Pizza.  He’s a mbira player, and I have one of his composer series CDs on Tzadik Records.  He’s from frickin’ Eugene and on Tzadik Records – – how cool is that?

Speaking of Tzadik… on to some upcoming Jay-Z news… and by Jay-Z, I mean John Zorn (founder of Tzadik).

Graphic design artist extraordinaire Heung Heung “Chippy” posted on her blog about some new design stuff that she’s been working on for Tzadik:

I’m designing a book jacket for John Brackett’s biography on John Zorn, published by Indiana University Press.  Title: John Zorn Tradition and Transgression.  Cover photo by Scott Irvine, Book Jacket Design by myself, Book Interior Design by Jamison Cockerham.  It’s nearly done and looking pretty good. I imagine The Dreamers limited edition thing for audiophiles may very well be a vinyl issue.  That’s my inkling and heretofore a rumor.  Tzadik hasn’t done a vinyl yet, and what else for audiophiles is considered limited edition these days?  Sweet… The Dreamers is a fantastic, exotica meets Electric Masada ventures out earlier this year on Tzadik.  It’s one of my favs of 2008 so far.

The Crucible… yay!  A 4th installment from the noisemetal Moonchild Trio of Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, and Joey Baron was inevitable.

I dig JZ’s Filmworks series… Sholem Aleichem: Filmworks XX is on its way to me now.

Additional info on the John Zorn biography… it’s due out in early 2009.  It’s a book.  With pages.  Some probably graphic (just judging based on JZ’s Naked City album artwork and Dr. Brackett’s recent presentations at recent conferences).

The song is called “Fire-Ikuma,” and it’s from Tagaq’s upcoming album, Auk~Blood. There was an external link to an mp3 sample of the songs… alas, it’s been removed. :( Anyway, it’s a good song… especially if you like experimental, world music with a throat music (or Mike Patton) slant.

The Melvins

I saw the Melvins open up for Mike Patton’s Tomahawk (a Patton collaboration with Jesus Lizard’s Duane Denison) on the Tomahawk – Mit Gas tour. The other opener (before the Melvins), Skeleton Key, was more interesting to me at the time than the Melvins. Anyway, I dug the Melvins as well on that tour, but I never got any of their albums (I still don’t besides the “Fantômas-Melvins Big Band” album — but now they’re at least added to my Lala list).

The Melvins have been around forever (25 years or so)… which is forever in the rock band sense. They’re what some might call “sludge metal” or “slow punk.” They’ve got tons of albums (on majors like Atlantic, on indies like Ipecac). They’ve worked with the punk realm (Jello Biafra), the grunge realm (Melvin’s drummer Dale Crover used to play with Kurt Cobain), the avant-garde/noise realm (Buzzo is in Fantômas with Mike Patton), and with the art metal realm peeps (Adam Jones of Tool has played with them live / the Melvins have opened for Tool on several tours). They’ve also collaborated with Lustmord (who recently remixed some of Maynard’ James Keenans Puscifer tracks), and they plan on collaborating soon with Zu (an Italian hardcore/free-jazz band). Anyway, the Melvins are “well connected” in the scene. They’ve got a guitarist/singer (Buzz “King Buzzo” Osbourne) with very recognizable hair (video link).

Anyway, the main purpose of this post is that I’m totally diggin’ the tracks on MySpace from their upcoming Nude with Boots album (Ipecac – July 8th). Totally diggin’ as in… just about every track.

They’re going to be in Eugene, OR (W.O.W. Hall on July 24th). I’ll be in Cincinnati, OH, for a wedding. Rassen-frassen

Mike Patton & the Metropole Orchestra 2008

Mike Patton has been known for off-the-wall stuff… Faith No More did crazy stuff, Mr. Bungle even more so… Fantômas is for some entirely crazy stuff. Hemophiliac, PainKiller, Naked City guest vocals, Moonchild, and many other collaborations with John Zorn are also in the crazy, avant-garde camp for Mike Patton.

However, Mike Patton also has a fondness for the more accessible. FNM cover Lionel Richie‘s “Easy,” Mr. Bungle had “Retrovertigo,” Patton’s Ipecac Recordings put out records by classically or instrumentally adventurous but still accessible Ennio Morricone (exotica / spaghetti western / classical / movie scores), The Tango Saloon (jazz / spag. western / tango), Flat Earth Society (big band), Kaada (multi-instrumentalist / movie scores), and Eyvind Kang (some of his classical compositions).

Mondo Cane is a 1962 Italian shock-documentary film (read more here). It’s also the name of Mike Patton’s “60s/70s Italian pop” project. And “60s/70s Italian pop” involves orchestration and some good ol’ crooning…

The Tango Saloon has a new CD coming out entitled Transylvania… trouble is it’s only in Australia now. :(

Maybe Ipecac will get it for U.S. release? Their last one, Julian Curwin’s The Tango Saloon, was wicked good… spaghetti western, tango, jazz, off-kilter goodness. A song from it showed up on a fancy Mix CD I made a few years back…

Some words on some recent vinyl added to my collection…

God of Shamisen The Science Fiction of Ray Bradbury Attack! 7″ (God of Shamisen)

From the Secret Chiefs 3 / Estradasphere connection, I first heard God of Shamisen on the MySpaces (http://www.myspace.com/gos). This white vinyl with red label in white sleeve should clue you in to its Japanese influence. The shamisen is a 3-stringed instrument that’s played with a big ice scraper-like pic (called a Bachi)and has a somewhat banjo-like quality. I saw Kevin Kmetz (aka the “God of Shamisen”) play with Estradasphere, and it melded well with their sound as well. If you’ve seen a recent Nintendo Wii commercial… well, you know what a shamisen sounds like.

This 7″ includes “The Science Fiction of Ray Bradbury Attack!” and “Strange Relationship Attack!,” both of which can only be heard here on the vinyl or at their MySpace. IMO, “Ray Bradbury” is worth the price alone. Their full-length debut CD should be out sometime later this year. Info about the band and the vinyl is here: http://www.godofshamisen.com/

This 7″ includes “Videotape (Live from the Basement),” as opposed to the CD single version that includes “Down is the New Up” and “Last Flowers” (both also “Live from the Basement”). It can be gotten at Amazon.

Puscifer V is for Vagina 12″ -and- Queen B 7″ -and- Dozo 7″ (Puscifer Entertainment)

I got these mainly because I’m a Maynard fan. Most of what’s on them (ie- the remixes) can be found on iTunes (except for the Queen B Trip E Mix). If you do search out the vinyl… I’d recommend Amazon and not Puscifer HQ, though. Puscifer’s shipping charges are ludicrous… like more ludicrous than the Pope at a truck rally. Prior Puscifer limited editions weren’t available on Amazon; so this is a move in the right direction (IMO). I also got the Dozo DVD along with this shipment… warning: it’s got a damn annoying menu (it’s hard to find what you’re looking for… like the commentary… which may be Maynard, may be David Cross, may be my mailman).

Holy Fuck Lovely Allen 7″ -and- 12″ (Young Turks)

These were available a few months ago directly from Young Turks (a UK label), but again, horrid shipping and USD-to-GBP conversion. They became available stateside earlier in May from Beggars Group USA for a waaaay reasonable price (only $7 for all 19″ of thick, black… vinyl).

The 7″ includes “Super Inuit (studio)” along with the title track. The 12″ includes “Riton Rerub,” “Minotaur Shock (Broadmead Redevelopment Version),” and “No Age Remix” along with the title track. All of these are available on iTunes as well (check ’em out… or at least the first 30 seconds).

Oh snap… I just saw that the “Lovely Allen” and “Milkshake” videos are on iTunes. Click. Click. Rock.

Hooray for Hollywood!

Take note if you are a movie fan. There is a little film coming out in December called I Am Legend that features our very own Mike Patton. It also stars some actor named Will Smith. The tricky part is, you won’t see Mike, but you’ll hear him. He is the voice of the creatures in the movie. That is right, the evil screams and howls coming from the “creatures” will be courtesy of Mike. Seems he is getting a lot of requests to do evil/monster/zombie noises and sounds. Remember he is the Darkness in the game of the same name and even shows up in the game Portal as well!!!

REVIEW: John Zorn’s Moonchild @ The Moore Theatre / Earshot Jazz (Seattle, WA – – 11/4/07)

Two statements needed to be made prior to really starting this review… 1) caveat for the non-Moonchild enthusiast: “They’re like an audible Jackson Pollock,” and 2) I feel sorry for the ushers who obviously didn’t know what they were getting into when they signed up for this.

A little background / sidenote… I came into being a John Zorn fan through first being a Mike Patton fan. One of Mike Patton’s (and Trevor Dunn’s) early bands, Mr. Bungle, had a Zorn link early on (JZ produced their Warner debut in 1991). However, I didn’t really start getting into Zorn until about 2-3 years ago when I stumbled on his jazz-klez band Masada. I didn’t know that John Zorn did such melodic work; so Masada totally caught me off guard. Anyway, by that time in my musical meanderings, my interests had started getting into more experimental bands anyway. When I dug deeper into John Zorn’s back catalog I really dug most of his work – whether it be the melodic Masada incarnations, Bar Kohkba, FilmWorks, et cetera or the experimental, harder-edged Naked City, Painkiller, et cetera.

By the time the first mention of the upcoming album Moonchild: Songs Without Words (on his label Tzadik or an email from Downtown Music Gallery), I about flipped… as an experimental/avant-garde trio with Mike Patton (the aforementioned Mr Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, Faith No More, many many more), Trevor Dunn (the aforementioned Mr Bungle, Fantômas, Trio Convulsant, many more), and Joey Baron (Masada, Barondown, many more) was right up my alley. After that initial album in early 2006, Moonchild: Songs Without Words, the trio has put out two more albums of John Zorn’s compositions… Astronome (late 2006) and Six Litanies for Heliogabalus (early 2007) which also includes a chorus and other players (Ikue Mori, Jamie Saft, and Zorn himself).

All beautifully packaged and musically brutal, I don’t know where composition from Zorn stops and improvising by the Trio begins, but it can be as breath-taking as it is ear-hurting (remember my line above about it being an “audible Jackson Pollock“…?).

OK, now on to the concert review… note: 6 video snippets and 14 pictures are linked at the bottom of this review.

I took this concert trip alone… While I ease my lovely wife into listening to some of Zorn’s music (like Masada), I know when to not even bother (like Moonchild). I’m sure she’ll check out the video below and think I’m even more crazy than she already thinks I am for all of the cross-country concerting. But I think she’ll at least be thankful that I didn’t try to drag her to it, too… :)

I really had no idea or expectations for this show. I mean, I knew what to expect musically, but I didn’t know what to expect of the venue or the crowd. The venue, the Moore Theatre in downtown Seattle, was um… OK. I’ve been in better places, but I’ve been in worse. I was surprised at how big it was (capacity of 1419) compared to what I was thinking (a small venue, maybe not as small as The Stone, but not much bigger than 100 people). By the time the start time rolled around, the theatre was fairly full (the main floor was sold out, and I know the balcony was also open, too). Great turnout maybe due to the Earshot Jazz Festival or maybe due to the potentially “handful of shows only” nature of this band.

The band came on around 8:15pm… and blistered through around a solid hour of compositions. All three of them had sheet music on stands; so I’m fully aware that it’s somewhat composed music. Again, where the composition stops and the improvisation begins… your guess is as good as mine. Due to the lack of other players (like Saft, Mori, Zorn), and my lack of identifying the Moonchild trio’s “song” names… let’s just say that they stuck to a good mix of Moonchild and Astronome tracks.

Mike Patton was fairly wild for most of the set: jumping, squat-walking, tying himself up in the mic cord, swallowing the mic while screaming into it, spitting and belting out noises that made my throat sore just listening. He left the stage maybe 30-40 minutes in to let Joey Baron and Trevor Dunn have their way with our ears. I’d only previously seen Dunn in Mr. Bungle and Baron in Masada. In this entirely different setting with Moonchild, they really put out a veritable wall of sound. Even without Mike Patton’s screeching and guttural belts, Dunn and Baron were menacing in their own right.

The sound in the room was brutal. Loud, loud, loud. I thank my local music store for Hearos(tm). And, again, bless those poor ushers who didn’t know what they were getting into. I bet they were equally stunned with this “music” and the overwhelming positive crowd response. I wonder what they told their loved ones after going home from this ushering gig. hmmm…

The capper for the show proper was when Joey and Trevor left the stage. Mike Patton ripped into a 12-minute vocal solo which to me had many elements of “Litany IV”… probably the only Six Litanies piece in the set.

After a short break, they all came back for an encore… with the man himself, John Zorn. I had hoped that he was there, but after the main set was half over, I had written that off. He came out and directed them through a rippin’ tune… it could’a been 10 minutes, it could be 20 minutes, it could’a been 2 minutes. All I know was that it was intense, and Mike/Joey/Trevor definitely fed off of his energy on stage with them. My only desire on this one would have been for John Zorn to come out with his alto sax and do some of the call-and-repeat sax vs. voice that he did with Patton on Six Litanies… alas, I’ll have to wait another lifetime, perhaps.

All in all… great show – probably an hour twenty or just shy of an hour thirty of Zorn/Patton/Dunn/Baron. Worth the 8 hour roundtrip from Eugene, Oregon. Worth losing a little bit of sleep and homework time reading accounting valuation doctoral papers (blah blah blah). The Earshot Jazz Festival, or at least the only piece I could attend, was fantastic!! Being one of a potential handful of Moonchild appearances ever, I was happy to be in attendance and happy to document some of it in words above and in {cheap/low quality} video/pictures below.
