PDX Jazz Fest :: Mingus Big Band

19th Jan 10 (Tue) Leave a comment

Well, the PDX Jazzfest in Portland, Oregon, is about 5 weeks away. You won’t want to miss it. There are many fantastic local and national acts, including these great headliners:

Thursday, February 25 – Luciana Souza
Friday, February 26 – Mingus Big Band
Saturday, February 27 (3pm) – Trygve Seim & Frode Haltli
Saturday, February 27 (7:30) – Dave Holland Quintet
Sunday, February 28 (3pm) – Pharoah Sanders
Sunday, February 28 (7:30) – Dave Douglas Brass Ecstasy

As we lead up to the event, I’ll focus on one of the headliners a week… next up the Mingus Big Band.

For those jazz fans who don’t know the music of Charles Mingus, go back to school.  He was a monumental force on bass and a great composer in his own right.  He had a firey-oft-angry personality, a strong conviction against racism, and a great sense for melody.  He was one of my first forays into jazz… I had Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus and Mingus Ah Um long before I had any other jazz in my collection.

The Mingus Big Band celebrates the music of the composer and bassist, Charles Mingus, who died in 1979. Under the artistic direction of (Charles’ wife) Sue Mingus, this 14-piece band performed Thursday nights from 1991 to 2004 at the Fez under Time Cafe in New York City, occasionally alternating with the Charles Mingus Orchestra. From November 2004 to September 2008, the big band had a residency at Iridium Jazz Club and in October 2008 moved to Monday residency at Jazz Standard. The Mingus Big Band tours extensively in the United States and abroad, and has eight recordings to its credit, six of which have been nominated for Grammys.

Regulars currently appearing in the 14-piece band:

  • 3 Trumpets: Randy Brecker, Earl Gardner, Alex Sipiagin, Lew Soloff, Tatum Greenblatt, Ryan Kisor, Kenny Rampton, Jack Walrath, Sean Jones
  • 3 Trombones: Conrad Herwig, Andy Hunter, Ku-umba Frank Lacy, Earl McIntyre, Dave Taylor, Robin Eubanks, Joe Fiedler, Clark Gayton
  • 5 Saxophones: Vincent Herring, Seamus Blake, Abraham Burton, Wayne Escoffery, Donny McCaslin, Mark Gross, Craig Handy, Jason Marshall, Lauren Sevian, Jaleel Shaw, Steve Slagle, Ronnie Cuber, David Lee Jones
  • Piano: Orrin Evans, David Kikoski, Helen Sung, George Colligan, Kenny Drew Jr.
  • Bass: Boris Kozlov, Hans Glawischnig, Andy McKee, Joe Martin, Ugonna Okegwo, Dwayne Burno
  • Drums: Donald Edwards, Gene Jackson, Victor Lewis, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Adam Cruz

MONDO CANE!

17th Jan 10 (Sun) 2 comments

Reblogged from Stubbadub, a Mondo Cane news snippet from Greg Werckman (Mike Patton’s co-partner/co-founder of Ipecac Recordings):

“Got some cool upcoming releases. Just released BEAK> (a Portishead side project), releasing a DJ Rob Swift solo record in Feb, Mondo Cane, Mike Patton’s long awaited Italian pop project comes out in April, followed by new Melvins and more!

Sah-weet!  It was supposed to come out in 2009, but got pushed back due to Mike’s Faith No More reunion touring.  This album is gonna be excellent, 50’s Italian pop vocal goodness from Mike Patton.

Wussy’s 2010 plans

15th Jan 10 (Fri) Leave a comment

From the Wussy camp’s website…

We are gearing up for a busy winter and spring so keep your ears peeled. Right now we’re planning spring tour dates and working on a new record. We’ll have a single (vinyl-only) on Shake It Records coming out this spring as part of their Dangerous Highway series, a tribute to Eddie Hinton. The A-Side is our take on the classic “Breakfast in Bed” made famous by Dusty Springfield. More news on that soon. The Drive By Truckers and Greg Dulli 45’s are out now (see shakeitrecords.com for more info).

In the meantime, we’re also working on a live album and a collection of Wussy remixes from other artists.

In other news, Wussy’s self-titled album was #10 on Christgau’s 2009 Dean’s List!

Cool!  I’m looking forward to any new recorded music and touring from this great band!

Clogs w/ Sufjan & Shara

13th Jan 10 (Wed) Leave a comment

I got a chance to see Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond) and her singing debut with Clogs back in April 2007 at MusicNOW Fest in Cincinnati.  I’m stoked that this album is finally hitting the shelves with Sufjan Stevens and OSSO, too…

the clogs

When he’s not crafting epic indie rock in The National, Bryce Dessner teams up with Australian composer Padma Newsome to record hushed, intimate chamber-folk in the ensemble Clogs.

On March 2, Clogs will release their fifth album, the Newsome-composed song cycle The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton, via Brassland. My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden sings on six of the album’s 10 songs, and Sufjan Stevens and National singer Matt Berninger contribute one guest vocal each. The Sufjan-affiliated string quartet Osso also contribute.

PDX Jazz Fest :: Luciana Souza

12th Jan 10 (Tue) Leave a comment

Well, the PDX Jazzfest in Portland, Oregon, is about 6 weeks away. You won’t want to miss it. There are many fantastic local and national acts, including these great headliners:

Thursday, February 25 – Luciana Souza
Friday, February 26 – Mingus Big Band

Sunday, February 28 (3pm) – Pharoah Sanders
Sunday, February 28 (7:30) – Dave Douglas Brass Ecstasy

As we lead up to the event, I’ll focus on one of the headliners a week… first up Luciana Souza.

Luciana Souza is a Grammy winning jazz vocalist from São Paulo, Brazil.  Her first solo album was An Answer to Your Silence (1999). The Poems of Elizabeth Bishop and Other Songs (2000) was fifth place in the New York Times‘ 2000 The Year in Pop and Jazz: The Critics’ Choice list. In 1991, she was elected Discovery of the Year by APCA for her work with Hermeto Pascoal. In the next year, she toured with the Zimbo Trio. In 1995, she was nominated for Outstanding Latin Act and, in the next year, Outstanding Jazz Vocalist at the Boston Music Awards. Among the artists she has been performing and recording with are her godfather, Hermeto Pascoal; Danilo Perez; Zimbo Trio; David Kikoski; Joey Calderazzo; Romero Lubambo; Guillermo Klein; Oscar Castro-Neves; Cyro Baptista; the Paul Winter Consort; Ben Sher Group; Steve Lacy; Kenny Wheeler; Donald Brown; John Patitucci; Kenny Werner; Osvaldo Golijov; Bob Moses; and George Garzone. From a musical family (her parents are Walter Santos and Tereza Souza), Souza has been involved with music since her childhood, when she worked with jingles. After four years at Unicamp University in Brazil, she went to the Berklee College of Music, where she received a bachelor’s degree in jazz composition. She received a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. In 2009, Souza released Tide her first album for Verve and her second collaboration with husband and producer Larry Klein.

Extreme – DVD, new music, tour in 2010

11th Jan 10 (Mon) Leave a comment

News about EXTREME was just posted by Gary Cherone on the band’s Facebook page

Other than the occasional Nuno post, I have been absent from the conversation. So consider this my new years resolution.

That being said, while Rihanna is introducing the pop world to the greatest guitar player on the planet!… there are things happening in the Extreme camp. As you know we are putting out our first official Take Us Alive DVD/CD including 4 bonus videos slated for late March/April [2010]. Yeah I know hurry up! And don’t be surprised when you hear some new music from the band as well as seeing some live dates in 2010!

As for me, I’ve been busy recording new material with [side-band] Hurtsmile, which I’m really excited about. Two of these songs will be featured in a movie/documentary coming out in March (more on that later). One of the songs is an acoustic version of ‘Danny Boy’. Stay tuned.

Sweet!

RECIPE: Cute Olive Penguins

10th Jan 10 (Sun) 20 comments

Cute Olive Penguins

(click for larger)

I made these olive penguins (with my wife’s help) for this evening’s Vegetarian Supper Club in Eugene, OR, as a fun appetizer when people came in.  Hopefully they’ll be a hit!  They were really fun to make.

Ingredients:
makes as many as desired

  • medium black olives (the head)
  • large black olives (the body)
  • cream cheese or vegan cream cheese spread (for the stomach)
  • narrow carrots, cut into small rounds (feet) with notch (for beak)

Steps:

  1. Cut carrots approximately 1/8 inch (3mm) thick… this will become the feet and beaks (just shy of 1/4 of the carrot slice is beak-size).
  2. Cut large olives down one side (length-wise) and then fill with a small amount of cream cheese.
  3. Assemble penguins with a toothpick like shown in the picture at the top of the page.
  4. Get crazy and start a penguin war with extra toothpicks and ketchup for penguin blood.
  5. OK, step 4 may be optional.  Your call…
  6. Enjoy!

RECIPE: Creamy Vegan Chocolate Pudding

10th Jan 10 (Sun) 3 comments

Vegan Chocolate Pudding

This weekend will be a double-whammy recipe post (cute olive penguins this evening).  Yesterday I made homemade vegan chocolate pudding for today’s Vegetarian Supper Club in Eugene, OR.  It wasn’t too hard… and my taste test last night was delicious.  It is adapted from the January 2007 issue of Vegetarian Times. (They also used instant decaf coffee as an ingredient).

Ingredients:
makes four 6 oz. servings

  • 2 cups plain soy milk/rice milk/coconut milk, divided
  • 2 Tbl cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup vegan semisweet chocolate chips (or regular chocolate chips if not strictly vegan)
  • 3 Tbl sugar
  • pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

  1. Whisk together 1/2 cup soymilk and cornstarch in a small bowl.  Set aside.
  2. Combine remaining 1.5 cups soymilk, cocoa, chocolate chips, sugar, and nutmeg into a large saucepan.  Warm over medium heat until chocolate chips have melted.
  3. Whisk in cornstarch mixture and cook for 10 minutes over medium-low heat or until pudding thickens* and begins to boil.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  5. Divide pudding among 4 custard cups and chill well before serving.
  6. Enjoy!

*NOTE: If you double the recipe (or quadruple, like I did), you need to heat it longer… it took mine about 40 minutes instead of the above prescribed 10 minutes… you don’t want to apply extra heat to do it quicker… it may not thicken properly/consistently.

Info for the dieters… each serving is approximately 150 calories, 5 grams of protein, 5 grams fat, and 25 grams carbs.  I kept my version to 5 ingredients (for a challenge imposed by the dinner theme) and used sweetened dark chocolate chips and didn’t add the extra sugar, not much different outcome in flavor or consistency.

If you stumbled in on a recipe search, check out my other recipes, like vegan biscuits & gravy, spiced biscotti, vegan cactus chili, vegan bananas foster, mushroom dumpling stew, strawberry cornbread muffins, fruit spring rolls, grilled coconut-rum pineapple, vegetarian s’mores pouches, and pumpkin-infused vodka cocktail at THIS LINK.

Megadeth’s American Carnage postponed

Official Press Release – 1/7/2010

AMERICAN CARNAGE TOUR FEATURING MEGADETH, SLAYER AND TESTAMENT POSTPONED MEGADETH TO ANNOUNCE HEADLINE TOUR FOR MARCH AND APRIL

New York, NY– The much anticipated American Carnage Tour, featuring hard rock behemoths Megadeth, Slayer and Testament has been postponed as Slayer’s bassist/vocalist Tom Araya is in need of back surgery.

While disappointed by the tour’s delay, Megadeth are concerned for Araya and wish him a speedy recovery.

Megadeth are currently scheduling a U.S. headline run for March and April, and are rescheduling the American Carnage tour for Summer ’10. Anyone who has purchased an American Carnage ticket can hold onto it until the new dates are announced. Please visit www.megadeth.com for the latest updates.

Boo… I was looking forward to it, but I guess I can hope it’ll get rescheduled on another day when I can go this summer, and hopefully I’ll still get a photo pass.

Thom Yorke // Dave Douglas

7th Jan 10 (Thu) 1 comment

Two news items… both film & music related…

As posted on atease… Radiohead’s Thom Yorke wrote three songs for the Tibetian documentary When The Dragon Swallowed The Sun.  It is the documentary on the inside perspective on the Tibetan movement to free Tibet from Chinese occupation, its internal conflicts and contradictions.  In an interview with 24-bit, director Dirk Simin revealed that Thom Yorke wrote three new songs for a particular chapter of the film.

Songwriter Damien Rice has also written a song for the documentary, and composer Philip Glass has penned the main theme for the film, including a piece for a key “grand finale” sequence. The premiere is expected early in 2010.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

One of my favorite jazzmen, Dave Douglas, is bringing his Keystone group to Stanford to collaborate with filmmaker Bill Morrison on Spark of Being, a ‘monumental work’ combining the screening of film with live musical performance.  Dave Douglas is an artist in residency for most of the Spring 2010 at Stanford University.

If you are lucky enough to live near (or are vacationing near) Stanford, you can try your hand at going to the world premiere performance of Spark of Being on April 24, 2010.

In other news, there’s a new Symphony of Science song / video out.  It is “The Unbroken Thread,” featuring Carl Sagan (yet again), along with David Attenborough and Jane Goodall, and it is biology themed.  The clips used in this installment come from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, David Attenborough’s Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life, The Life of Mammals, The Living Planet, BBC Life, XVIVO Scientific Animations, IMAX Cosmic Voyage, Jane Goodall’s TED Talk, and a clever Guinness Commercial. The themes present in this song attempt to explore the wild diversity of life on our planet, the intricacy and origin of its mechanisms, and its close relation to all other life forms.

If you don’t know what Symphony of Science is… it started with “A Glorious Dawn” with Carl Sagan (from Cosmos).  It’s a brilliant auto-tuned mashup, and they also released it on vinyl (best of the year for me in 2009).  You can download the mp3s of the various songs over at the SOS site.

Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson started his Cover Versions singles (CDR and 7″ vinyl) back in 2005.  They are always one new SW song and one “mysterious” cover version (CV1 was Alanis Morissette’s “Thank You”).  Coming the next few months will be the 6th and final CV release, complete with a box to house all six.  SWHQ/Headphone Dust will have the CDs once available (no conclusive date was mentioned – – but the original SW song “An End to End” is now streaming on his MySpace page).  ToneFloat Records will have the CV5 & CV6 vinyl singles once released.

Artists of the Decade – 2000s (#1 to 10)

5th Jan 10 (Tue) 5 comments

Artists of the Decade – Honorable Mentions (1/1/2010 blog link)

  • Dweezil Zappa
  • Tori Amos
  • Celldweller
  • Iron & Wine
  • King’s X
  • Derek Webb

Artists of the Decade (#21 to 25) (1/1/2010 blog link)

25 ~ Ben Folds (solo)
24 ~ Peter Mulvey

23 ~ Opeth

22 ~ dredg

21 ~ Holy Fuck

Artists of the Decade (#11 to 20) (1/4/2010 blog link)

20 ~ Pedro the Lion (and David Bazan solo)
19 ~ Jurassic 5

18 ~ My Brightest Diamond

17 ~ Nellie McKay

16 ~ Secret Chiefs 3
15 ~ Over the Rhine

14 ~ Mike Patton

13 ~ Ani DiFranco
12 ~ Johnny Cash
11 ~ Dave Douglas

And now on to the final ten

~*~*~

10 ~ Glen Phillips

At the turn of the decade / century / millenium, Glen’s band Toad the Wet Sprocket were breaking up. He went on to make several solo albums (Winter Pays For Summer being my fave thus far), several mostly brilliant side ventures (Plover, RemoteTreeChildren, WPA, Mutual Admiration Society), and even reunite with Toad for some tours. He’s as active as ever and also quite the tweeter (oft humorous / oft political).

~*~*~

9 ~ Porcupine Tree (and Steven Wilson projects)

Near the beginning of the decade, I was giving up on “prog rock.” Then a buddy told me about Porcupine Tree (thanks, SteveC). 2002’s In Absentia is amazing, and I quickly bought PT’s catalogue. The entire decade was full of Steven Wilson projects – whether Porcupine Tree or his many (and I mean many) side projects.  Speaking of… Steven’s 6th and final Cover Versions CD and 7″ vinyl will be out sometime soon in the coming months.

~*~*~

8 ~ Sufjan Stevens

Illinoise was Paste’s #1 album of the decade. I think it’s in my Top 10 (as mentioned earlier, I honestly can’t bring myself to widdle down my album list to 20 or even 50 for the decade). Illinoise was my first foray into Sufjan’s world. The infatuation was near immediate. He ranges from poppy, to eclectic folk, to avant-electronic, to chamber music… and I think his song titles, while sometimes considered pretentious, put him in my hero list. :) The later part of the decade showed a more secluded Sufjan and a recant on the 50 States “promise.” However, I’m still very excited about what’s up his sleeves for the next decade.

~*~*~

7 ~ John Zorn (Masada and otherwise)

I knew of Zorn in the 1990s (via the connection to Mike Patton and specifically Mr. Bungle), but didn’t get into him until 2003 or so. Even still, I didn’t know about Masada (his klezmer-jazz quartet) until mid-decade. Their recorded studio work was all in the 1990s, but they stayed active touring throughout the 2000s… and John Zorn kept actively writing Masada Book Two – which is a book of music covered by other bands and has seen a dozen fantastic releases on his label, Tzadik. I just counted, and I have 82 John Zorn related disks from the decade (CDs, DVDs, vinyl). So, um, yeah, he’s prolific. The Masada / Bar Kokhba / Electric Masada is my favorite category of Zorn releases; but his Filmworks series, Moonchild Trio (Mike Patton, Joey Baron & Trevor Dunn), and The Gift / Dreamers band are also key releases. 2010 has 12 new Zorn releases on the docket. *drool*

~*~*~

6 ~ Maynard James Keenan (Tool / A Perfect Circle / Puscifer)

One of the best singers in the world of rock, Maynard has kept busy… this decade: three bands and eight or so albums, several DVD releases, remix albums & singles, vinyl singles, and a new winery. While he doesn’t always nail it every time, his and his bands’ hit rates far exceed most. His solid work ethic points to more releases next decade. A recent interview leads me to believe that the touring side of things may slow down some, but I’m hoping that just means “less touring” and not “no touring.” There have been hints of Tool and A Perfect Circle studio stuff in the near future… and Puscifer seems alive and kicking (and keen on the internet EP thing). Puscifer is hitting the Midwest and East Coast in early 2010.

~*~*~

5 ~ Daniel Johns (Silverchair & The Dissociatives)

2002’s Diorama (by Silverchair) is a contender for best album of the decade for me. Daniel Johns followed that up with a side project with Paul Mac called The Dissociatives. Their self-titled debut (2004) is also a contender for best album of the decade… then Silverchair came roaring back in 2007 with Young Modern – another strong contender. Daniel Johns and his couple of bands has large gaps between studio releases, but they all score high every time for me. They’ve moved well beyond their debut (which they released in the 90s at age 15). 2010 promises the follow-up to Young Modern… so, look out, Best of 2010 lists…

~*~*~

4 ~ Elliott Smith

I found out about Elliott in early 2000, a little bit after Figure 8 came out. I had the opportunity to see him live at Southgate House (Newport, KY) on the Figure 8 Tour. He quickly became an important part of my musical diet. His albums hit me emotionally, but he left us too early (he died of apparent self-induced stab wounds to the heart on October 21, 2003). I still get goosebumps with his music and quite frankly have never been affected by a celebrity’s death like I am by Elliott’s. An album and more of his unreleased material has made its way out since his death. I don’t believe in an afterlife, but if there were one, I’d hope to get to meet Elliott and have a beer with him.

~*~*~

3 ~ Sigur Rós

Ágætis byrjun and ( ) may be the most beautiful things that I don’t understand due to language barriers – two perfect albums, if you ask me. This past decade Sigur Rós went on to make four full length albums, a handful of EPs and soundtracks, several world tours, an utterly gorgeous tour documentary called Heima (that rivals Pink Floyd’s Live at Pompeii in stunning beauty),  and still find time to take time off (well, time off except for Jónsi – who released a duo album with his partner Alex Sommers and is set to release a solo album in early 2010).

~*~*~

2 ~ Radiohead (and Thom & Jonny solo)

One of the most unarguably overrated bands of all-time… yet, one of my favorites. The decade started with Kid A and ended with some Thom Yorke solo activity… it was a full decade of albums, tours, solo work (the aforementioned Thom solo stuff plus two soundtracks from Jonny). They branch out and sometimes get more praise and credit than is merited (I know skads of indie artists doing the “pay what you want” method years before In Rainbows), but I suppose Radiohead were the first formerly major-label / international band to do so.  Anyway, Radiohead, despite public pressure, continue to evolve as a band. That scores major points with me. They’re hitting the studio in January 2010… yippie.

~*~*~

1 ~ Kevin Moore (Chroma Key & OSI)

Yeah, the #1 of the decade who few know about… Kevin Moore left the progressive rock band Dream Theater in 1994, shedding the seemingly antithetic “progressive” constraints of the progressive scene to make his own music.  Chroma Key’s debut Dead Air For Radios (1999) is my #1 album of all-time… but it came out in the late 90s. The 2000 album You Go Now is probably in my Top 10 of all-time as well. The branching out into scoring with Kevin’s solo soundtrack Ghost Book (for the Turkish horror movie OKUL), political/religious-imagery radio/mix-taping with Memory Hole 1, and the new band project with Jim Matheos called the Office of Strategic Influence (aka O.S.I.) solidified Kevin in my favorite artists list. I’m looking forward to more Chroma Key, O.S.I., Memory Hole, or solo work that Kevin puts out… hopefully soon.

As pointed out the other day, the 2010s are shaping up to be a great decade… see you on the other side!

Oh, and for those who say that the decade ends at the end of 2010… meh. I’m starting with 0 and ending with 9 (like a LOT of people). Rationale: the 80s, the 90s… you don’t say the 80s went from 1/1/1981 to 12/31/1990 or the 90s from 1/1/1991 to 12/31/2000.
