Kevin Moore “Shine” soundtrack

7th Sep 10 (Tue) 1 comment

Kevin Moore (of Chroma Key, O.S.I. and Dream Theater fame) has started a pre-order fundraising project to release the soundtrack he recorded for the Turkish film Kucuk Kiyamet (2007).  If funding succeeds the album Shine will be released in November, and those who pre-order will receive the CD two weeks earlier than the release date. T-shirts and posters are also part of the funding.

REVIEW: Boys Eats Drum Machine & Beats Antique @ McDonald / Eugene Celebration (Eugene, OR – 8/28/10)

29th Aug 10 (Sun) 1 comment

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

Eugene Celebration 2010Raise the Roof” was in full effect on Saturday.  This year’s Celebration was in a partnership with with Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity and Northwest Community Credit Union to fund the construction of two houses in the Eugene-Springfield community over the next three years.

We caught some good grub, interesting people watching, scoped out the pretty damn awesome electric vehicle (the Pulse made by Arcimoto)… and some music.  The first band I saw was Upstate Trio.  They’re from New York, but now live in the Eugene area.  Great groove rock trio.  I hope to catch them again soon.

Boy Eats Drum Machine was the next major act to take in.  I saw him open for That1Guy in May (review link with photos below), and he put on a great show.  Last night’s performance wasn’t any exception.  Sax, turntable, drums, effects pad, loops, and all around great grooves from this one-man wrecking crew.  Check out the stop-animation video for “Hoop+Wire“:

You can also download the BEDM song “Hoop+Wire” on mp3 and FLAC (or other options) for FREE over at Bandcamp.  Next up…

As mentioned a little over a week ago, Beats Antique is coming out with a new album in about two weeks.  It’s called Blind Threshold.  If it’s anything like their past two albums and an EP, it’ll be great.

They hit the stage around 11pm and played a fairly percussive set.  Zoë Jakes wasn’t able to dance last night.  She hurt her knee a while ago and is on doctor’s orders to take it easy for a while.  So, we didn’t get the gorgeous dance performance that we’re used to (photos of Zoë dancing at prior events linked below).  Despite the lack of dancing by Zoë, their infectious music got the rest of the crowd to pick up some of the slack.  It was a great show, and hopefully they’ll be back soon, with Zoë in full health.

The overwhelming bass attacked our ears for both BEDM’s and Beats Antique’s sets.  It got especially painful up in the balcony; so we stayed downstairs for most of the night.  All in all, a great hour-long set from each band.  Round 2 of Celebration for me today… I hope to catch 3 Leg Torso‘s set.

Sufjan Stevens – The Age of Adz

26th Aug 10 (Thu) 1 comment

Last week they announced the All Delighted People EP. And the week before the fall tour was announced. And today, Asthmatic Kitty announced the upcoming release of The Age of Adz (pronounced Odds), the first song-based full-length from Sufjan Stevens since 2005’s Illinois.

8/27 update: Preview of “I Walked” HERE.

http://asthmatickitty.com/the-age-of-adz

The Age of Adz tracklist
1. Futile Devices – 2:11
2. Too Much – 6:44
3. Age of Adz – 8:00
4. I Walked – 5:01 preview
5. Now That I’m Older – 4:56
6. Get Real Get Right – 5:10
7. Bad Communication – 2:24
8. Vesuvius – 5:26
9. All for Myself – 2:55
10. I Want To Be Well – 6:27
11. Impossible Soul – 25:35

The Age of Adz will drop on October 12th (CD, MP3) with a double-LP following on November 9th. For the next three weeks you can pre-order the CD or LP, and receive an MP3 download on September 28th, two weeks before the release date.

Per Asthmatic Kitty:

It’s much too soon to cast descriptive lots, but we can say the new album sounds nothing like the All Delighted EP (although it shares similar themes of love, loss, and the apocalypse). Nor is this new album built around any conceptual underpinning (no odes to states, astrology, or urban expressways). We can say it shows an extensive use of electronics (banjos and acoustic guitars give way to drum machines and analog synthesizers), and an obsession with cosmic fantasies (space, heaven, aliens, love), to create an explicit pop-song extravaganza, augmented by heavy orchestration, and maybe even a few danceable moments. Enjoy Your Rabbit meets the BQE. But with songs. Verse, chorus, bridge, backbeat. Gated reverb. Space echo. Get your boogey on. The ‘Adz’ of the title loosely refers to the apocalyptic paintings of outsider artist Royal Robertson (1930-1997), whose work is used for the album cover, interior design, and as general inspiration for the tone of the album.”

Wow… 2010 is the Year of the Sufjan.

The Swell Season Announces Hiatus

24th Aug 10 (Tue) Leave a comment

As reported on Paste

It’s been a rough week for Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova of The Swell Season. Just days after a fan committed suicide onstage at their Saratoga, Calif. show, the duo has announced that they are going on hiatus. The decision to part ways seems unrelated to the Saratoga tragedy; however, and the pair will still perform the remainder of their European fall tour dates. Hansard told Spinner.com that he and Irglova are pursuing different musical projects. “I’ll go back to The Frames, and Mar will make her own record at some point,” he said. “This band will eventually naturally end. But right now, all of us are just so grateful.”

The duo (which snagged an Oscar for Best Original Song with 2006’s “Falling Slowly”) forged ahead with their collaboration this past year despite ending their romantic relationship, and the two appear to be on good terms. Hansard said he’s looking forward to Irglova’s solo material. “I love the way she writes,” he said. “I think she’s an incredible songwriter, and I think she could make a really beautiful, beautiful record. I have no doubt, in fact.”

I’m bummed to see them part ways, and deeply saddened about the recent fan suicide… I hope they get back together some day.  I know I’ll enjoy future music from both Glen and Marketa.  I’m also glad I got to see them last fall in Eugene, Oregon.  Click here for my review (and more photos).

1-Bit Symphony

24th Aug 10 (Tue) Leave a comment

Tristan Perich‘s 1-Bit Symphony is brilliant.  Perfect for the experimental fans, perfect for electrical engineers who also dig music, and perfect for fans of post-modern minimalism.  It is an electronic composition in five movements on a single microchip. Though housed in a CD jewel case like his first circuit album (1-Bit Music 2004-05), 1-Bit Symphony is not a recording in the traditional sense; it literally “performs” its music live when turned on. A complete electronic circuit—programmed by the artist and assembled by hand—plays the music through a headphone jack mounted into the case itself.

It comes out today (Aug 24, 2010) and is limited edition… http://bangonacan.org/store/product/181

Blueberry Dreamin’ – Part 2

…Electric Bugaloo.

OK, so I’ve had a post like this before about something also synthetically blueberry-y… and, no, I’m not “in the pocket” of “Big Pudding.”  While synthetic, and wholly unnatural, this Hunt’s Blueberry Muffin pudding is… well, magical.

Sorry, I’m only human.  It has inspired me to make this recipe for an upcoming Veggie Supper Club.

Goddamn Electric Bill – Jazz (vinyl)

22nd Aug 10 (Sun) Leave a comment

Jason Torbert, aka Goddamn Electric Bill, is putting out his fourth album soon… this time on vinyl, and this time with our help.  He’s started a campaign via Kickstarter to gain enough pre-order support to make the vinyl happen.

There are several different packages including vinyl only, vinyl + bsides, vinyl+ bsides + CD, et cetera.  He needs to raise $1,500 by Sept 17th.  He’s about half way there as of now, but the project won’t happen if he doesn’t raise enough.  For those not in the know about GdEB, it’s a fantastic melodic, organic electronic soundscape.  Check out some tunes on MySpace or his video for “Ten Thousand Years” here:

I pitched in… I hope you dig the music and do the same.  Let’s make GdEB’s Jazz album on vinyl a reality!

Miles Davis & Dogfish Head – Bitches Brew

21st Aug 10 (Sat) Leave a comment

Well, Lagunitas is officially done doing their Frank Zappa beers (Rueben & the Jets was their final one)… but I just got my hands on a couple of bottles of Delaware-based Dogfish Head‘s tribute to Miles Davis‘ album Bitches Brew.

It’s a 9% (ABV) dark beer that is a fusion of three threads imperial stout and one thread honey beer with gesho root (traditionally used in Ethiopian honey wine, tej).  Read more about the brew commemorating the 40th anniversary of Mile Davis’ album over at the Dogfish Head website.  I haven’t had time to taste the brew yet, but hopefully soon while spinning the record. :)

Sufjan Stevens – All Delighted People

20th Aug 10 (Fri) 2 comments

So, announced and released today, August 20th… Sufjan StevensAll Delighted People EP…

http://sufjanstevens.bandcamp.com/

1. All Delighted People (Original Version) 11:38
2. Enchanting Ghost 03:39
3. Heirloom 02:55
4. From The Mouth Of Gabriel 04:03
5. The Owl And The Tanager 06:38
6. All Delighted People (Classic Rock Version) 08:07
7. Arnika 05:13
8. Djohariah 17:02

A near hour-long “EP”… yippie… also from Asthmatic Kitty:

The EP, All Delighted People, is built around two different versions of Sufjan’s long-form epic ballad “All Delighted People,” a dramatic homage to the Apocalypse, existential ennui, and Paul Simon’s “Sounds of Silence.” Sounds delightful, yes! The song was originally workshopped (oh we hate making workshop a verb, but time is money!) on Sufjan’s previous tour in the fall of 2009. Other songs on the EP include the 17-minute guitar jam-for-single-mothers “Djohariah,” and the gothic piano ballad “The Owl and the Tanager,” a live-show mainstay (and Debbie Downer if you ask us; what’s it doing on a “Delighted” EP?). If you don’t have five dollars, you can stream the EP for free right on Bandcamp. Or if you’re into tactile sensations, we are making All Delighted People available on single-CD and double-LP formats later in 2010 (we’re aiming for December, fingers crossed). 180-gram vinyl.

Beats Antique – Blind Threshold

17th Aug 10 (Tue) 1 comment

This just in from Beats Antique…

(click for uber-hi-res cover art)

We are very proud to announce the release of our 3rd full length album called “BLIND THRESHOLD“. With 14 tracks the new self-release includes vaporous violins and Danny Elfman-esque dementia; glitchy, laser-guided harmonica provided by Blues Traveler frontman John Popper; and two very different vocal tracks that range between restless pop hooks provided by singer songwriter LYNX to the vibrant Eastern European folk melodies of New York vocalist Eva Salina. All wrapped up into an intricate collection of orchestral textures, heavy beats and sub bass. The new album was mastered by the great producer TIPPER with art and design by Andrew Jones and photography by Sequoia Emmanuelle.

I know we were talking about calling the next album Contraption Vol 2, but we decided to give this one its own name. Contraption Vol 2 will come when its time is ready. We have been waiting to share the art and release date until we had all our ducks in a row We have finally gotten word on the official release date. Blind Threshold will be available online in all major download stores and in physical form from CD baby on Tuesday September 14th !!!

They’re also going out on tour this summer/fall… I’ll be catching them at Eugene Celebration!

Greydon Square – The Kardashev Scale

15th Aug 10 (Sun) Leave a comment

About two years after The CPT Theorem, atheist rapper Greydon Square comes roaring back with his third opus… The Kardashev Scale.  I ordered the CD and got the digital immediately for free.  If you only want the digital, it’s priced right at only $8.99.  It’s excellent – gonna be in my best of 2010 list!

http://greydonsquare.bandcamp.com/

“Its title comes from the Russian Scientist, Nikolai Kardashev, who in 1963 Kardashev upon examining cosmos came up with the idea that some galactic civilizations would be perhaps millions or billions of years ahead of us, and created the Kardashev classification scheme to rank such civilizations. With the Kardashev Scale, Greydon employs creative samples from respected astrophysicists like Michio Kaku and Carl Sagan, a feature track with Canibus, and 19 new songs to add to his expanding catalogue of music.”
