Over the Rhine – The Long Surrender (virtual listening party)

7th Oct 10 (Thu) Leave a comment

So, Cincinnati folk-duo Over the Rhine has a new album coming out… it’s called The Long Surrender, and it comes out 1/11/11.  If you helped out with the pre-order campaign (mentioned back here and here), they are having a very special internet streaming listening party from Friday, October 8th at 6pm (PST) through Sunday, October 10th at 6pm (PST).

I’d post the link to the streaming-goodness… but I don’t want to get fired as a fan… again.

Look for a mini-review from me sometime next week.

Mike Patton’s Mondo Cane in SF

5th Oct 10 (Tue) 1 comment

Wanderlusting took some fantastic photos of Mike Patton’s Mondo Cane show at San Francisco’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival this past weekend… check ’em out (click the picture below for more):

Stubbadubb also posted a photo of Mr Bungle / Secret Chiefs 3 frontman Trey Spruance playing guitar with Mondo Cane.  Here’s hoping Mike and Trey keep up the showing up in the same places together… :)

Also, here’s some video of the show…

I’m so jealous… wish I could have gone…

2nd Oct 10 (Sat) 2 comments

So, there was a hint a few months ago about a vinyl release from Tzadik… my hunch was that it would be John Zorn / The Dreamers O’o release (out on CD in 2009).  Well, posted on Tzadik graphic artist Hueng-Hueng “Chippy” Chin’s Chippy Design flickr site yesterday was this…

“The Dreamers vinyl”

It’s available for pre-order at Amazon under the title Dreamers – The Gentle Side… out Nov 23rd, 2010.

Derek Webb‘s Democracy Vol 1 is rolling along… This month, it is “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel, featuring Derek’s wife Sandra McCracken.

For those not in the know, Democracy Vol 1 was part of the Stockholm Syndrome pre-order package, but you can still join in over at the DW store and get the following (plus future releases):

  • January: The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
  • February: Coldplay – Fix You
  • March: Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changin’
  • April: Gnarls Barkley – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul
  • May: Sufjan Stevens – Chicago

~Dan – np: Misha Mengelberg – Four in One

Democracy Vol. 1 is the first in a series of subscription based albums of cover songs that Derek will be recording annually, starting January 2010. Those who participate will not only receive the exclusive album, but will democratically decide what songs Derek will record.

Ever wished you could hear Derek cover your favorite Beatles song? Or Backstreet Boys song? Or even re-record your favorite old Caedmon’s Call song? Here’s your chance. Songs will be nominated and voted down to 12. Derek will record them (demo quality) and deliver them digitally (320kbps MP3s), one song per month for 12 months. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique collaborative project with Derek Webb!

The Earshot Jazz Festival’s official program is over at: http://earshot.org/Publication/pub/10october.pdf.  Or you can check out just the schedule over at http://earshot.org/Festival/schedule.html.  Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, Vagabond Opera, Toshi Reagon, Dave Peck, Ornette Coleman (film), Brian Blade, Ziggurat Quartet (mulltiple shows), DJ Spooky, Eugene Chadbourne, and more… sounds like a great three week line-up.

I hope to hit Erin’s Portland (Oregon) show… I saw her this past spring, and she puts on a great show.  Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it to any of the Earshot shows this time.  Damn the 5-6 hour drive.  Now, if they can get John Zorn back in 2011… I’m there!

Sigur Rós – homage or fromage?

Reposted from the sigur-ros.co.uk siteSigur Rós doesn’t allow for their music to be used in advertisements.  So some advertising companies have gotten “creative” (*cough*) and pretty much ripped them off.  Listen for yourself:

REVIEW: AMA Trio @ House Show (Eugene, OR – 9/25/10)

26th Sep 10 (Sun) Leave a comment

FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM

My second time to a lovely Rolling & Tumbling House Concert near UO campus in Eugene, OR.  R&T is a great!  They seem to bring in a lot of songwriters and world musicians.  SO, this was only my second of many R&T house shows…

When I saw Amy Denio on the list with a new project, the AMA Trio, I didn’t want to miss it.  I have been a fan of another of Amy’s bands – The Tiptons Sax Quartet.  The AMA Trio is a bit different from the woodwind-forward jazz of the Tiptons, more world fusion / Latin American music.  The AMA Trio is Amy Denio alongside Madeleine Sosin & Abel Rocha (who have a few CDs out under the name Correo Aereo).

They played traditional songs from Venezuela, Mexico and Argentina, as well as many of their own original tunes.  All three were proficient multi-instrumentalists.  Madeleine also played the violin, guitar, drum, shakers as well as singing on a few songs.  Amy played accordion, clarinet, and drum.  She sang on a few tunes as well.  Abel was the primary vocalist (when they weren’t jamming), as well as played a mean set of guitars and harp.  The ease of all three members switching from one instrument made it seem quite effortless.

Some of the most fascinating playing was what might be considered normally subdued instruments… Madeleine’s shaker playing made the little instruments seem way more distinctly rhythmic.  She should teach lessons… because I don’t know how many times I’ve seen people “just shaking” them with no real purpose.  Abel’s harp playing was also captivating… playing both the lead melodies and the rhythm parts.  Amy stuck to accordion for more than half the set, when she broke out the clarinet, she had some nice flavors and solos to add to the songs.  I dug the more jazzy textures she added when she was on reeds.

Setlist: a little over 2 hours

  • Set 1~ unknown
  • Carnaval (Venezuela)
  • Ararat (Armenian)
  • Jarabe Loco (Mexico)
  • Martiñana (Mexico)
  • “I Love You” (Amy’s tango for a cat)
  • Playa Grande (Venezuela)
  • Cuatrapeado
  • Raisa (Algerian-based original)
  • Ti Feu (Mexico – Spanish & Zapotec)
  • Entre a Mi Pago (Argentina)
  • Golpe de Agua
  • Set 2~ Tres Diamantes (Venezuela)
  • Finadita
  • Breakfast in Bed (Amy original)
  • Los Hermanos (Argentina)
  • unknown klezmer-Argentinian tune (Tiptons-y in spots to my ear, but actually arranged by Madeleine)
  • Guendanabani (Zapotec)
  • Darling, Please Don’t Wake Me (Amy original)
  • Golpes Tocuyanos
  • Hanana (Amy original)
corrections to the setlist are welcomed

They’re going into the studio this coming week to make their first record as a trio.  Stay tuned to their MySpace page below for news as it becomes available.

Radiohead might trash new album

25th Sep 10 (Sat) Leave a comment

As reported in SPIN

Radiohead finished recording songs for their follow-up to 2007’s In Rainbows, but that doesn’t mean it’s ready to be released. Drummer Phil Selway said the Oxford quintet will return to the studio early next week to “take stock” of their new material — and possibly “throw it all out.” “Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board,” he told the Canadian Press. “It’s all up in the air at the moment.” Selway, who explained that the band has “been working on material on and off for a year,” added that while the songwriting process for In Rainbows was shaped by extensive touring and live experimentation with the songs, the new album “was quite the opposite.”

Fucking teases… maybe “throw it all out” is British for “give it to us for free.”  But knowing Thom Yorke, he’s a perfectionist.  I bet they’ll scrap it and start over.

Sigh.

PDX Jazz 2011 Theme

23rd Sep 10 (Thu) 3 comments

Portland Jazz Festival (aka PDX Jazz) has announced their 2011 theme:

BRIDGES AND BOUNDARIES:
JEWISH & AFRICAN AMERICANS PLAYING JAZZ TOGETHER

FESTIVAL HEADLINERS INCLUDE: ESPERANZA SPALDING, SFJAZZ COLLECTIVE featuring STEVIE WONDER’s catalog, REGINA CARTER, AND JOSHUA REDMAN

February 18 through 27

Past, present and future collaboration between African Americans and Jewish Americans is the message behind Bridges and Boundaries: Jewish & African Americans Playing Jazz Together, the theme of the 2011 Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air Portland Jazz Festival presented by US Bank. The festival, which annually selects a compelling musical and programming theme, will be held Friday, February 18 through Sunday, February 27 at venues throughout Portland. The complete festival lineup will be announced on October 13 when single show and special package tickets go on sale exclusively to PDX Jazz members. Tickets will become available to the general public on October 23.

A select few of this year’s culturally diverse headliners include Avishai Cohen, the Israeli trumpeter, one of the leading players in the new all-star SFJAZZ Collective, performing the work of African American pop icon Stevie Wonder. Cohen will also be joined by his siblings Anat Cohen and Yuval Cohen for a special performance of The 3 Cohens. Famed African American violinist Regina Carter will return to Portland, presenting her newest project, Reverse Threads, which traces the musical history of African cultures, including tribes of Ugandan Jews. And, Joshua Redman, son of African American saxophonist Dewey Redman and Jewish American dancer Renee Shedroff, leading his new James Farm Quartet that includes both African American and Jewish American musicians.

African and Jewish American community leaders, Portland Jazz Festival’s new Artistic & Community Ambassador Esperanza Spalding (who will lead her new Chamber Music Society in an exclusive Portland area engagement), and many other artists will participate and interact in panel discussions and “Jazz Conversations” focusing on artistic and social perspectives. National jazz journalists, writers, and critics-including Nat Hentoff-will also participate in these events.

For a complete schedule of events, please visit:

www.pdxjazz.com

I’m excited about the SF Jazz Collective and their 2011 Stevie Wonder theme (though it won’t have Dave Douglas and Joe Lovano this year), but I’m mainly excited about Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin.  Holy cow, they’re good.

The vinyl-or-mp3-only, self-titled debut by Hoquiam is available on St. Ives/Secretly Canadian.  That release and Damien’s solo Saint Bartlett rank in my faves this year.
