Nellie McKay – New Video & Touring behind her musical ‘I Want to Live!’

28th Jun 11 (Tue) Leave a comment

I Want to Live! a musical death row revue, conjures the life story of “a woman of dubious moral standards…often a guest in seedy bars…”

“Inspired by the 1958 movie of the same name, I Want to Live! combines Nellie McKay’s virtually unlimited gifts as a singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, ukulele player, mimic, satirist and comedian into a show that is much deeper than its surface might suggest,” writes Stephen Holden for The New York Times.   “In the most lighthearted way they evoke a heartless environment of social injustice in which people who fall through the cracks are invisible to everyone else.”

“Pretty darned unique,” adds Michael Musto of the Village Voice.

Puscifer ‘Conditions of My Parole’ & Tour {new A Perfect Circle & Tool music, too}

22nd Jun 11 (Wed) Leave a comment

As posted in SPIN this morning, Puscifer is releasing their second full-length studio album this fall.  Album name – Conditions of My Parole.  Street date – October 18, 2011.  Puscifer is the brainchild of Tool/A Perfect Circle frontman and Caduceus winemaker Maynard James Keenan.

Man Overboard,” the first single from the album, will be available via iTunes and other digital service providers on July 19.   Conditions of My Parole was recorded in Jerome, Ariz. this spring with tracking done amidst the wine barrels from Keenan’s Caduceus Cellars. The album was produced by Keenan, Mat Mitchell, and Josh Eustis. Contributing musicians for the new album include the aforementioned Keenan, Mitchell, and Eustis as well as Carina Round, Juliette Commagere, Matt McJunkins, Jeff Freidl, Gil and Rani Sharone, Jonny Polonsky, Tim Alexander, Devo Keenan, Alessandro Cortini, Sarah Jones, and Jon Theodore.

From SPIN

After the album drops in October, Puscifer will hit the road for a two-month tour. Maynard says he’s still working out the details, but fans can expect variety show-style gigs like the band’s last jaunt in 2009, but with “a lot of changes and new approaches. We’ll be doing a lot of filming and posting more videos online, too.”

Also news about APC and Tool…

But even when he’s deep into Puscifer mode, Maynard’s other projects are never far from his mind. After their summer tour, A Perfect Circle “might put out a track or two,” he says. “The energy is good, so there’s always the potential for a future.” And Tool? “We’re writing,” he says.

REVIEW: U2 & Lenny Kravitz @ Qwest Field (Seattle, WA – 6/4/11)

5th Jun 11 (Sun) 5 comments

photo by Soren McCarty (Denver show)

U2 is one of the biggest rock bands in the world.  They’ve been a band for almost 35 years – all the same four guys.  Sit back and think about that for a minute.  Sure, they haven’t been without struggles, but they’ve been a solid force in rock music for a long, long time.  Saturday night was my third time to see them (PopMart 1996, Elevation 2001), and based on the reviews and photos I had seen, I knew I was going to be blown away…

Qwest Field started being configured for U2’s 360º Tour earlier that week.  The 360º Tour features the largest concert stage structure ever and a 360-degree staging/audience configuration that allows fans to surround the stage from all sides.  The large parking lot full of semi-trucks wasn’t just for Bono’s sunglasses supply.  Check out the GeneStout.com media recap of the stage build out (with Mike Savoia’s photos – more from Mike below, too).  See a time-lapse build-out of the Denver show (FB video link).

We positioned ourselves at near the north side of the outside of the loop for the show – as we hadn’t gotten there early enough for the inner loop.  After running into a bad batch in the crowd (i.e.- drunk as hell d-bags), we backed off and watched from a nice safe distance.  Opener Lenny Kravitz hit the stage around 7:30 and played a solid 50 minutes set.  One new song, and a cadre of his hits.  Cindy Blackwell was not on drums – that was the only noticeable absence.  Lenny had some ear-monitor issues near the end, which was frustrating him, but he put on a great show regardless.

Lenny’s Setlist: 50 minutes

  • Come On Get It [new song]
  • Mamma Said
  • It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over
  • Let Love Rule
  • American Woman [The Guess Who]
  • Fly Away
  • Are You Gonna Go My Way

After a short break, the David Bowie tape intro started, and U2 walked out onto the stage…

U2’s Setlist: 2+ hours

  • Space Oddity [tape intro, David Bowie]
  • Even Better Than The Real Thing
  • I Will Follow
  • Get On Your Boots
  • Magnificent
  • Mysterious Ways
  • Elevation
  • Until The End Of The World
  • All I Want Is You
  • Stay (Faraway, So Close!) [acoustic]
  • Beautiful Day with NASA video* & Space Oddity snippet (*video below)
  • Pride (In The Name Of Love)
  • Miss Sarajevo
  • Zooropa
  • City Of Blinding Lights
  • Vertigo
  • I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight with Discothèque and other snippets
  • Sunday Bloody Sunday
  • Scarlet
  • Walk On
  • Encore 1: Aung San Suu Kyi Message [tape]
  • One
  • Where The Streets Have No Name
  • Encore 2: Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
  • With Or Without You
  • Moment of Surrender

They rocked out, and from our vantage point it was like watching alien TV.  Some of the best moments for me… The kick-off “Even Better Than the Real Thing” followed by the throwback “I Will Follow” (this show was going to be all over their catalog).  The NASA Commander Mark Kelly video intro to “Beautiful Day” (from space – video below).  The snippet of “Discotheque” was excellent (POP is a great, under-appreciated album).  Bono swinging out on his lit-up microphone during “Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me.”

Oh, and Zoo-fucking-ropa.  The expanding televisions caught me off guard… it was a circus of sights and sounds.

A massive spectacle from a massive band.  A truly entertaining experience.  U2 blows about any other live show out of the water as far as sheer force, light, power, and energy.

Eddie Vedder – Ukulele Songs (2011)

27th May 11 (Fri) Leave a comment

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder is putting out his stripped down Ukulele Songs album next Tuesday (May 31st).

It’s a short album (less than 35 minutes), but has many of the things we love of the voice that is Eddie Vedder.  Musically, I find it lacking.  I’m used to the rock(!)… but I still think it’s a good record.

The album is streaming for free over on NPR.  You can order it from the Amazons now.

Eddie’s upcoming summer tour with The Swell Season/The Frames frontman Glen Hansard (and not Thom Yorke) starts in mid-June:

Tori Amos – Night of Hunters (Sept ’11)

4th May 11 (Wed) 3 comments

Tori Amos is a chameleon – changing her musical style (slightly) and her outward appearance (usually more than slightly).  Trouble is lately she’s been putting out long-ass albums of mostly mediocre work, as far as I’m concerned.  Oh for the heydeys of the 90s and early 2000s.

Well, she has a new one in the can entitled Night of Hunters, and it’s coming out in September 2011 on Deutsche Grammophon, a German classical label.  Behold the art for her upcoming tour (and presumably the album)…

update 6/22 album art

Um, is she human?  Is she plastic?  As far as the album, here’s the press’ slant…

“It’s a 21st century song cycle inspired by classical music themes spanning over 400 years. I have used the structure of a song cycle to tell an ongoing, modern story. The protagonist is a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship. In the course of one night she goes through an initiation of sorts that leads her to reinvent herself allowing the listener to follow her on a journey to explore complex musical and emotional subject matter. One of the main themes explored on this album is the hunter and the hunted and how both exist within us.”

I’ll get it.  I mean, I’ve signed a contract with my 20 year old self to buy anything Tori Amos ever puts out.  I just hope to Talula that it’s good.

Gary Cherone – HURTSMILE 2011 Tour

3rd Apr 11 (Sun) Leave a comment

One of the tragically timed bands in existence… Extreme.  They were too good to be lumped in with the “hairband” era, yet with their power ballads as their primary radio coverage – that’s what they got labeled.  Then grunge came along and washed well-produced, melodic art-rock out to sea…

I was lucky enough to catch their Saudades de Rock tour in Cincinnati a few years ago (with King’s X, too!). Extreme’s power duo of Gary Cherone (vocals for Extreme & one-time Van Halen) and Nuno Bettencourt (guitars) are one of my favorite duos to watch – period.  They work sooo well together.  Well, Nuno is now a hired gun on tour (currently Rihanna); so Gary is heading out on the road with his side-band: Hurtsmile.  It also has Gary’s brother Markus on guitars (who I saw in 1995 with the band FLESH with Nuno’s brother Paulo on vocals… incestuous Boston music scene – for sure!).

I shant be lucky enough to catch this tour… but if you’re in one of these spots in the U.S. or Japan, check it out.  Gary is an impressive performer.  Their self-titled debut album came out in February (see link to the right for sound samples).

Thom Yorke added to Eddie Vedder solo tour

1st Apr 11 (Fri) 6 comments

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke was a last minute adjustment to Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder’s upcoming solo tour.  The Swell Season’s Glen Hansard will be the opener, and Thom and Eddie will share co-headlining duties.

Per Thom Yorke’s publicist (press release link below)…

[Thom] will play a mix of tunes from The Eraser, some The King of Limbs songs, a few solo piano tunes and share some songs with Eddie.  [Thom] and Eddie have been mutual admirers of one another’s work, and the timing was right as Radiohead didn’t have any summer touring plans for 2011.

The Hansard/Yorke/Vedder tour kicks off in Providence, RI on June 15th and wraps up a month later in Seattle.  For a promo video about the upcoming tour, check here:

Mike Patton’s Mondo Cane – North American Tour

31st Mar 11 (Thu) 2 comments

Update July 2011: it looks as though funding fell short for a North American Mondo Cane tour for 2011.

Mike Patton’s Mondo Cane was one of the absolute best albums of 2010… and by far the best packaged piece of musical art.  He took it on the road for a few European dates and a San Francisco date in 2010, but sadly nothing else.  Well, just announced on Cyro Baptista’s Facebook page and confirmed on Patton’s PR firm The Agency Group’s bio page (quote below), Mondo Cane will be at New York City’s Lincoln Center (in August – no specific date yet) with a North American tour as well:

Upcoming appearances include a concert at Lincoln Center with John Zorn, presented by New York City Opera, and a North American tour of Mondo Cane.

I’m hoping there is a good West Coast date or two… Portland?  Seattle?  Vancouver?  Hell, I’ll even hit San Francisco if I can.  No word on dates yet, but once they’re announced, be sure I’ll post them!  Note: There is already a confirmed date in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 17, 2011.

If you don’t know about Mondo Cane – it’s not like Mike Patton’s other work (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, et cetera).  It’s his 50s Italian pop big band group… listen to some samples over on the Amazons:

New Incubus album (is done)

23rd Mar 11 (Wed) 1 comment

I like Incubus.

Sure, they started as a Mr Bungle wannabe band (Fungus Amongus), and morphed into a Faith No More wannabe band (SCIENCE / Make Yourself), and then morphed into a quite popular mainstream rock band (Morning View/etc), and then their last studio work was mainly instrumental (the CD companion to the Look Alive DVD).  Brandon Boyd is a great vocalist (a la MB/FNM’s Mike Patton) plus he’s dreamy (yeah, he’s on my switch team), Mike Einziger is an interesting guitarist/composer (straddling rock and avant-garde), DJ Kilmore brings some flavorful turntablism to the mix, and the rest of the guys hold it down mighty fine… mighty fine, indeed.

This just got posted to their webpage…

The long awaited 6th studio album from Incubus is completed! True to the Incubus legacy, this record is nothing like its predecessor, but still maintains the quintessential Incubus vibe. Stay tuned for more updates from Enjoyincubus.com.

Woot.  There are also plans for Pacific Rim touring in 2011, and U.S. tour this summer… per Brandon Boyd’s recent interview on Noisecreep, he believes that the new Incubus album will be out in August or September. No official release date has been announced.

Update 4/1 (not expected as an April Fool’s Day joke):

Incubus sent out an email on 4/1 with a link to a website (http://adolescents.enjoyincubus.com/).  The website is merely a splash page with “Adolescents / If Not Now, When? 4/4 6pm PST” on it.  Is Adolescents the name of the album?  Something else?  Check that page on 4/4/11 @ 6pm (PST) to find out…

I plan on catching Maynard, Billy & Co at the Portland gig.  They’ve got a new website designed, with a blue, underwater/octopus theme.  Here’s hoping some new music is around the corner, too.  Also, in the email announcement, they hinted at some Puscifer news coming soon, too.

Puscifer Update 3/23: Per Carina Round’s email: “After that I will be heading into the studio with Maynard James Keenan’s ‘Puscifer’ to work on songs for the next release and rehearse up some goodies for a tour in the Fall.”

Secret Chiefs 3 – Europe 2011

26th Jan 11 (Wed) 7 comments

Trey Spruance and the Secret Chiefs 3 haven’t really swung around the U.S. since 2008 (Portland review linkfrom their last full US tour?).  Lately South America and Europe are getting some love.  While I’m bummed for no chance to see them as of late, I’m glad they’re active…

SECRET CHIEFS 3 Europe tour
from 16th June to 18th July 2011
Confirmed dates TBA
Booking contact : europe@webofmimicry.com

I think that’s also their first new press photo in a while.  If my brain is working correctly, that’s (L-R) Jai Young Kim, Trey Spruance, Ches Smith, Toby Driver Rich Doucette, and Timb Harris.  Will we see Book of Souls in 2011?  Here’s hoping!!

Tres Mountains (King’s X’s dUg Pinnick & Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament)

25th Jan 11 (Tue) 4 comments

A new “super group” of dUg Pinnick from King’s X, Richard Stuverud of the Fastbacks, and Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam has a name and an album coming out and a selective tour in March 2011.

Tres Mountains (aka Tres Mts.)

Go to http://tresmts.com/, sign up for their newsletter, and get a free download of “My Baby.”  The debut album Three Mountains comes out in March 15th, 2011 (CD, LP, digital).  Update 2/3: I just got my ticket for the Seattle show at the Shoebox (3/16).  Apparently Mike McCready (also from Pearl Jam) is playing with them. Woot!

Update 3/8: get the record digitally here:

I’m hoping good things from this group.  I tend to really dig bands and side-projects where dUg gets involved.  The first track “My Baby” needs a bit warming up for me, but I dig the vibe.
