bike ride tours, any speed vinyl, the bqe, a van & streaming ‘deth

11th Sep 09 (Fri) Leave a comment

5 music news stories… Peter Mulvey, Holy Fuck, Sufjan Stevens, David Bazan/Pedro the Lion and Megadeth…

So, Peter Mulvey has toured all over the world.  A few years back, he started also doing some bike tours within his own state.  Well, he just embarked on his “Long Haul” Tour in support of his new, fantastic record Letters from a Flying Machine.

He’s riding 1,100 miles from Grand Rapids, MI to Northampton, MA on The Long Haul Tour, September 9 – 26.  His friend, and presumably co-rider, Kathy Wittman will be blogging about it as it goes on.  The daily blog will be HERE.  Here’s his tour path, created via the Google based on his gigs along the route:

(click for larger)

He’ll be in Oregon (Portland and Eugene) in early November.  Not part of the bike tour, but I’ll be glad to see him nonetheless.  In fact, he might be less worn out from riding so much.  Getting to see him twice in one weekend is gonna be fantastic… PS- go to PeterMulvey.com for info on the new record.  Seriously, it’s good, folks!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Next up… a vinyl you can play at either 33 1/3 or 45 rpm…

This one from Off the International Radar including a remix by fellow Toronto’ans Holy Fuck.  I don’t know about the rest of the songs on “Hot Lips,” but the Holy Fuck collaboration features “Holy Radar” – which is a reworking of OTIR’s “E bowl of Iris.”  Holy Fuck sped up the original recording on a record player in studio and then played along and added their own layers.  So, at 33 1/3, you’ll hear OTIR with a slowed down HF; and on 45 rpm, you’ll hear HF with a sped-up OTIR.  You can listen to the “as normally played” version of the song on OITR‘s MySpace page.  There is also ordering links there as well.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Sufjan StevensThe BQE (as reported here) is coming out in limited edition vinyl (in addition to the CD/DVD combo).  It’s now up for pre-order at the Asthmatic Kitty store and over at Amazon.  Also, in the news, Sufjan will be playing his 2004 album Seven Swans in its entirety at ATP NYC this weekend. ATP = All Tomorrow’s Parties (festival).

And to round it out with some metal… Megadeth‘s latest record, Endgame, is out next week (9/15/09).  It’s streaming in its entirety on the MySpaces

McKay, Porcupine Tree, Mulvey & Bazan news

6th Aug 09 (Thu) Leave a comment

Music news that I care about seems to be hitting often lately…

Nellie McKay‘s album that was supposed to be outlast fall,” will finally be out “this fall.”  No album name, but we at least have a street date – October 13th.  There’s not much more content over at the Direct Current Music website; so I hope they are right on this one… .COM, .NET, and .ORG have failed to provide any corroboration.  I hope “this fall” doesn’t turn into “next fall“… yet again.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Porcupine Tree just put their newest one, The Incident (due out 9/15 in the U.S.), up for pre-order.  Much like Steven Wilson’s Insurgentes, this one has a deluxe edition that would make the Pope curse.  It looks freakin’ gorgeous (and huge)…

On the pre-order page there’s a video of PT frontman Steven Wilson talking about what’s to be included.  Oh, it’s a’spensive, but it makes sense if you’ve ever read this “1,000 True Fans” article by Kevin Kelly.  Not to say that only the “true fans” will buy it, but, well… anyway, the article is a good read…

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

One of my favorite singer-songwriters Peter Mulvey is coming through the PacNW in November.  One Portland date that I may try to make, and one Eugene date that I will make.  He’s also got a new one coming out (in September on Signature Sounds).  It’s called Letters from a Flying Machine

Ellery, Peter Mulvey, My Brightest Diamond

28th Mar 09 (Sat) Leave a comment

A trio of new music news…

Cincinnati lush-pop/folk duo Ellery is hitting the studio soon with Malcolm Burn (http://www.malcolmburn.com). Malcolm is a Grammy-winning producer who has worked with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Kaki King, Rachel Yamagata, Sarah McLachlan, Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams, and more.  This will be their follow-up to the fantastic debut, Lying Awake from 2007.  They’ve got a special “help them make a record” thing going on at ellerystimulus.com.  I’ve plunked down my cash… wish I got to see them as often as when I lived in Cincinnati, but regardless I’m glad they’re hitting the studio again.

For more info on Ellery…

Milwaukee/Boston singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey is putting the finishing touches on his next album, Letters from a Flying Machine.  Of the glut of singer-songwriters, Peter has a place in my heart (and ears).  He’s entertaining, intriguing, great storyteller, and a great sense of humor. If you’ve never heard of him… do yourself a favor, and hear of himhttp://myspace.com/petermulvey

The third installment of My Brightest Diamond‘s A Thousand Shark Remixes is hitting iTunes on Tuesday, March 31st.  It’s remixed by Roberto C. Lange.  Remix EP #1 (by Alfred Brown) and #2 (by Son Lux) were pretty tasty.  EP #4 (by DM Stith) should be out in a few months, and all four will be made available on a physical CD with likely some tasty packaging.  Maybe vinyl, too… but that’s just me throwing a marble in the rumor mill.

Yann Tiersen, SXSW, Nellie McKay

17th Feb 09 (Tue) Leave a comment

Well… triple threat news again. This time it’s all about a touring Tiersen, a festival in Austin that every-indie-body loves, and my favorite Nellie (rhymes with McPie).  In order of recency…

OK… so 3 hours ago I found out that French musician Yann Tiersen was touring.  Touring the U.S.  Touring through Portland… holy crap.  For those who don’t know Yann Tiersen, click his name above or know that he makes great French music that got a lot more prominence with the Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie Amélie.  I never thought he’d play any semblance of a decent North American tour… Anyway, here are the tour dates:

Apr 15 – Maison Française WASHINGTON
Apr 16 – Irving Plaza NEW YORK
Apr 17 – Club Soda MONTREAL
Apr 18 – Club Soda MONTREAL
Apr 19 – Mod Club Theatre TORONTO
Apr 21 – Logan Theatre CHICAGO
Apr 22 – Triple Rock Social MINNEAPOLIS
Apr 24 – Blue Bird DENVER
Apr 25 – Urban Lounge SALT LAKE CITY
Apr 27 – Richards VANCOUVER
Apr 28 – Neumo’s SEATTLE
Apr 29 – Wonder Ballroom PORTLAND
May 1 – Great American SAN FRANCISCO
May 2 – El Rey LOS ANGELES
May 8 – Queens Hall EDINBURG
May 9 – ABC 1 GLASGOW
May 10 – Duchess YORK
May 11 – Academy II BIRMINGHAM
May 13 – Junction CAMBRIDGE
May 14 – Electric Ballroom LONDON
May 15 – ATP fest “The Breeders” MINEHEAD
May 17 – Pheonix EXETER
May 18 – Komedia BATH
May 19 – Concorde II BRIGHTON
Jul 4 – Centro de artes e do espectaculos FIGUEIRA DA FOZ
Jul 5 – Casa das artes VILA NOVA DE FAMALICAO
Jul 6 – Centro cultural de Belem LISBOA

I just got my tickets (the Portland show is available from TicketBastard).  I’m. so. excited.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The SXSW music festival is a’going on again.  I don’t really have a desire (or time off during busy season) to go to it this year.  If I had time off in March, I’d be in San Francisco anyway.  This year’s SXSW schedule is out (http://www.sxsw.com/).

If I went, I’d totally check out Peter Mulvey (he’s awesome) on the Signature Sounds stage, and Fol Chen on the Asthmatic Kitty stage… OK, and maybe Tori Amos, but she’s far from indie (she’s got a new one coming out in the spring, titled Abnormally Attracted to Sin).

Oh, and I’d probably also check out Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head on whatever stage they’re playing at SXSW… as you can’t argue with a band name like that (though I will say I’ve never ever heard the band).  Hot!

The live taping of Nellie McKay and Mia Doi Todd on Mountain Stage was recently posted.  It was taped March 2008 but recently posted on NPR.org on January 27, 2009.  Go here for the streaming link hook-upNellie played: Real Life, Long and Lazy River, Mother of Pearl, Testify, Buttons & Bows, and Zombie; and Mia Doi Todd played: River of Life and Esperar Es Caro.

REVIEW: Peter Mulvey & Patty Larkin @ W.O.W. Hall (Eugene, OR – – 5/1/08)

2nd May 08 (Fri) Leave a comment

This was my fourteenth (14th) time seeing Peter Mulvey play… and I never get tired of his great guitar style, funny story-telling, and strong-yet-unassuming voice. Last night’s show was no exception to the “never get tired” statement. He’s a treat, and I’m glad he makes it to Eugene occasionally…

Peter Mulvey making the cover for Kitchen Radio
Peter Mulvey’s Setlist (5/1/08 @ W.O.W. Hall): ~about 40-45 mins~

* If Love Is Not Enough (complete with Hall and Oates & KC and the Sunshine Band snippets)
* Black Rabbit (aka “The Milkmaid’s Buxom Nephew ;-) it’s a gorgeous solo guitar piece originally on his 1992 release Brother Rabbit Speaks… see YouTube video below…)
* The Knuckleball Suite (makes my wife & I want to kick back some Sandeman Port… delish…)
* Dynamite Bill *new* (nice guitarwork and classic Mulvey low-end)
* Shirt (a personal fav)
* Mailman *new* (written for Chris Pureka who sent him a book of poems)
* Sad, Sad, Sad, Sad (and Faraway from Home) (another personal fav)

The story leading up to “Sad, Sad…” was about his experience of playing inside of a cave in West Virginia for 100 high-school science geniuses (genii?). I’d never heard that story… wild stuff. I wonder how he got that gig?

“Black Rabbit” Video

After a short break, Patty Larkin came on. I hadn’t heard her before this show.. Peter was the main reason to get a ticket. Anyway, Patty didn’t disappoint either. She’s got a great guitar style… not the usual singer-songwriter style. She knows how to play “more than just a few chords.” I don’t know any of her songs, but they were interesting, usually storytelling pieces. She played a little over an hour, and she was thoroughly enjoying. She hails from Boston, MA; but actually went to the University of Oregon (here in Eugene) for her undergrad studies. Go Ducks!

Peter Mulvey came on a played backing guitars for one of her songs, too. Oh, and she “pulled a Jónsi” later in her set… playing her guitar with a bow…

decidedly not from Iceland

Great stuff all around…

REPTET. Great jazz band that lives about 4.5 hours too far away from me. Alas, they’ve been down this way (Eugene) from their way (Seattle) once lately (see review here). Great improvisors, great songwriters, great musicians. They’ve got a new album out. It’s great. It’s called Chicken or Beef?. My ears aren’t vegetarians. It’s quite delicious.

RAQUY and the Cavemen
… tonight at Cozmic Pizza… look for a review tomorrow. Seen her and her band of misfits a few times in Cincinnati. They’re always a treat, plus they’ve put out 2 CDs since we last saw ’em… gather together in a cave and groove with a pict

Free French Fries are the opener for Peter Mulvey who is the opener for Patty Larkin… Thursday at WOW Hall. Peter Mulvey is one of my favorite singer-songwriters… ever. Great vocals, great guitarist (and his backing guitarist Goody is also wicked good, but not with him on this tour). Oh, and all you coupon haters can hate my cajun french fry fingers… foo! So, yeah, it’s all about literally free french fries via coupon (from The Vintage, who makes great cajun french fries & food and has great local beer on tap), not a band named Free French Fries. Though that would be cool in its own right… anyway, look for a review on Friday…
