Fol Chen is “In Ruins”
Fol Chen sent director Chris Wilcha (This American Life Showtime series / The Target Shoots First) to Iceland to film amidst the volcanic dust from the erupting Eyjafjallajökull for their new music video, “In Ruins.”
Two Icelandic youth wander through an apocalyptic wasteland wearing masks just to breathe and see amidst the dust. “In Ruins” is from Fol Chen’s Part II: The New December. Director: Chris Wilcha // Producer: Petur Sigurdsson // Director of Photography: Tómas Örn Tómasson //Editor: Catherine Bull // Featuring: Gudfinnur Sveinsson & Elìn Elisabet Einarsdóttir

In other news, there’s a new Symphony of Science song / video out. It is “The Unbroken Thread,” featuring Carl Sagan (yet again), along with David Attenborough and Jane Goodall, and it is biology themed. The clips used in this installment come from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, David Attenborough’s Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life, The Life of Mammals, The Living Planet, BBC Life, XVIVO Scientific Animations, IMAX Cosmic Voyage, Jane Goodall’s TED Talk, and a clever Guinness Commercial. The themes present in this song attempt to explore the wild diversity of life on our planet, the intricacy and origin of its mechanisms, and its close relation to all other life forms.
If you don’t know what Symphony of Science is… it started with “A Glorious Dawn” with Carl Sagan (from Cosmos). It’s a brilliant auto-tuned mashup, and they also released it on vinyl (best of the year for me in 2009). You can download the mp3s of the various songs over at the SOS site.
two videos… Flaregun & Chali 2Na
Two cool videos, for different reasons… first up, from a friend in Cincinnati, Ryan Adcock. He’s got a new band with Craig Dockery called Flaregun. The debut album, Ten Sundays, has a couple of songs that are a bit Jebus-y for my tastes (especially compared to Ryan’s earlier work), but the album as a whole is really good. This debut video for the song “I Seek You” is pretty cool…
Flaregun’s Ten Sundays album can be had at CDBaby (or locally in Cincinnati).

Next up, totally different style coming at you from Chali 2Na from Jurassic 5. It’s his lead-off single (“Lock S**t Down” with Talib Kweli) from his debut solo album, Fish Outta Water. I always loved Chali’s baritone, quick delivery. Some of the effects in this video are a little cheesy, but overall, it’s a pretty damn fun video…
Fish Outta Water is out now…
