REVIEW: final ISIS tour @ WOW Hall (Eugene, OR – 5/29/10)
FYI… PHOTOS of the SHOW at the BOTTOM
On May 18, 2010, post-metal powerhouse ISIS officially called it quits. They did everything they wanted to do, and said everything they wanted to say… and this May & June tour would be their last. It was a good run: 13 years and 5 brilliant studio albums.
The break-up news was deeply saddening news to the fans, but at least we get one last hurrah.
The show opened with Jakob (a three-piece from New Zealand). They played a solid 40-minute set of instrumental post-rock. They had heavy moments, but they were decidedly the “calmest” of the trio of bands last night. They were really tight and created a great, building wall of sound. Great for fans of a harder edged Explosions in the Sky. Jakob’s debut, Solace, is out now.
Tombs (a four-piece from Brooklyn) were more in the metal category. Guttural vocals, double kick drum blasts, but more building in their guitar sound compared to other metal fare (e.g.- similar to ISIS versus Slayer). A great 40-minute onslaught to our ears. Check out their album, Winterhours.
ISIS went on just before 11pm and came out hard and heavy… while both Jakob and Tombs were tight, it seemed as though things got kicked up a notch when Isis hit the stage. The audience crowded the stage to be pummeled by the sweeping and soaring musical backbone amidst Aaron Turner’s powerful voice…
They played a hauntingly brutal mix from Wavering Radiant, In the Absence of Truth, and a few oldies thrown in as well. There were a handful of moments of Aaron’s more melodic vocals, but that was few and far between… the show tended to show off Isis’s more pained vocal cuts. They played about 90 minutes…
Setlist: (thanks for corrections from a fellow fans)
- Deconstructing Towers
- Not In Rivers, But In Drops
- So Did We
- Threshold of Tranformation
- Ghost Key
- Collapse and Crush
- From Sinking
- Encore: In Fiction
- The Beginning and the End
It’s sad to see Isis end, but at least they are ending with a kick ass tour. Also, if you go to one of the shows (see below), there is a TON of merch… they’ve brought about everything each member has ever been involved in. I dropped some coin for the Japanese limited edition Panopticon, Oceanic, 7.23.06 live, and the Melvin split 12″ vinyl. That was barely scratching the surface for this excellent “Isis Garage Sale.”

Hey bro, awesome pictures! But the setlist is VERY off… Aren’t you a fan of the band at all??? I’ll give you some hints… First of all, they didn’t play Holy Tears, 20 Minutes/40 Years, Hand of the Host, and Wills Dissolve… And the encore was In Fiction and the Beginning and the End. Really dude? Did you not know what they were playing? A hint: They DID play Not in Rivers, but In Drops, So Did We, Collapse and Crush, and From Sinking… They played an intro track that I didn’t recognize, hopefully somebody else can tell us what it was!!! Heavy as hell, for sure. I’m glad you were at this show man, it was truly incredible!!!
Sorry… I am a fan, but I suck at remembering ISIS’ song names. I have removed my poor list (I took it from another list of a recent show, as I thought they were playing similar songs). Yeah, I know… lame. :) I shan’t let that happen again.
I could have swore they played 20/40 & Holy Tears, though.
Anyway, an open call to anyone who has the setlist… :)
I drove 6 hours to that show and have a buddy that works at the WOW Hall. He was gaurding the back entrance and after the show he waved me to him, for he had snagged a hand written set list by ISIS off the stage and gave it to me. So to solve all the mysteries….
Deconstructing Towers
Not In Rivers, But In Drops
So Did We
Threshold of Tranformation
Ghost Key
Collapse and Crush
From Sinking
In Fiction
The Beginning and the End
P.S. I dont know how to post pictures on this site, or would just post a photo of it. Tell me how and i will do so. Cheers to ISIS!
Thanks!!!!!
Re: posting a picture… you could email it to me and I can post it.
Hey man, sorry if I sounded like a dick on my last post. I had hit up the bar and was pretty buzzed, you know how it goes… Anyway, I have a similar problem, but with the order of the songs!!! Ha, but you were right, they did play hand of the host. I’m pretty sure they didn’t play 20, and I’m positive they didn’t play holy tears. Hope that helps. And the intro track… I didn’t recognize it! I went through their earlier discography looking for it but didn’t have any luck. So, here are the songs, not necessarily in order: Intro, Hall of the Dead, Not in Rivers, but In Drops, Collapse and Crush, So Did We, Ghost Key, Threshold of Transformation, From Sinking, and the encore was In Fiction and The Beginning and the End. Thanks bro, once again I’m digging the pictures. I couldn’t believe the concert, they really outdid themselves!!! Hope you had fun too. Cheers!!! :)
Erm, sorry, don’t know what I’m smoking, if I remember correctly they did play 20 minutes/40 years… I have a poor memory. :)
haha… poor memory, but better than mine. :)
guh.
I’m so psyched I made a playlist based on your tentative setlist to listen to all day.
Thanks for posting this!
Have fun!!!!
Hey, thanks for reading my review man. Great pictures! In the interest of shameless self-promotion, here is a link to my Oregon Music News review of the show:
